阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to
Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to
carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his
wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he
looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of hear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the
wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later,
it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a
second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw
a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth
would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it
when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too,
assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf.
Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards
away now.

As The Jungle Book song Bear Necessities goes, “forget about your worries and your conflict” can be a little
bit difficult when you find yourself face to face with a real bear.
Bears are common in the Northern Hemisphere. As human habitats stretch toward the wilderness, more and
more animals cross their paths with those of humans. This can lead to dangerous encounters especially when
precautions are not in place. In these situations, keeping your distance is still the best advice.
According to the National Park Service, one should also remain calm as bears, more often than not, are not
really willing to attack you. Once in a standoff (对峙), avoid making sudden moves or loud noises as these can
trigger aggression. 7-year-old Huxley did exactly what he was told when he encountered a massive bear.
It was a Sunny morning. Huxley was wandering on his way home when a big hulking (笨重的) figure emerges
from behind him. A hurried glance backward, he knew it was a black bear. The bear approached cautiously at first,
probably sizing up the figure in front of him. A second later, perhaps judging that Huxley was no match for it, the
bear burst into a full sprint (冲刺) and ran its way toward the boy.
At first, Huxley was really frightened. However, he knew it was impossible to run or fight with the big beast.
In the moment of crisis, he remembered his mother reminds him regularly about these possible encounters. She tells
him that if Huxley finds himself face to face with a bear and there are no adults around, he should remain calm.
Huxley calmed down at thinking of this. He stared at the bear down without any movement. This might have
been the reason why the young bear stopped dead in its tracks. They faced each other motionless, and there was
only a foot distance between them.

When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog. His mom Octavia refused since raising a dog would need lots of
attention and care.
The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where Octavia taught. And the mother was in
charge of the club. One morning, guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a forest. During the
hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye. Evan thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother.
So he walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers. Unfortunately, Evan got separated from the group and
got lost.
He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the group. Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan
thought it might be a wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he saw its tail wagging (摇
摆) gently.
“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog. “You must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh?” The dog
looked at him with the most sincere expression. Evan wanted to find his way home, not only for himself but also
for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began

It was getting darker and colder. Evan discovered a cave. He went inside and made a fire to keep warm. He
knew his mom and other schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him. “Buddy, let’s wait here and see
if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the dog. And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.
At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their
shelter. The dog was growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another animal growling
back. Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to
himself, “Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The fox moved forward, wanting to attack
Evan.

When I was a kid in Pennsylvania, my family rehabilitated (康复治疗) wild animals. I grew up with raccoons
(浣熊) and a fox running around the house. We would go travelling to Bermuda and I would watch the whales off
the shore. I fell in love with them and wanted to know more about what they got up to underwater. Now I’ve been
studying whales for more than 30 years and am the president of the Center for Cetacean Research and
Conservation.
In 2017, I was on a boat around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, working on a film about whale conservation.
The crew wanted to get more footage (镜头) of me in the water with the humpback whales — I often slip in quietly更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
to record their behaviour for research. Seeing a couple of humpbacks in the distance, I slid off the boat wearing a
snorkel mask and a GoPro, and swam towards them.
As I was approaching, one of the male humpbacks came right up to me, nuzzling (用鼻爱抚) me with his head
and pushing me through the water. I felt a rush of pleasure mixed with fear. I tried to keep calm, never taking my
eyes off him. Then the whale swam underneath me and lifted me out of the water on his flipper (鳍). I signalled to
the boat, then — swoosh — I was pushed back under.
After seven and a half minutes of being pushed around by the humpback, I saw what I thought was a second,
smaller whale. But then I noticed the tail — whales move theirs up and down, and this one was moving side to side.
I realized with horror that it belonged to a huge, 18ft tiger shark! Tiger sharks are known to attack people,
sometimes fatally (致命的).

Grady and his family go camping every summer. As it was becoming hotter, here came the camping time.
Having planned the camp long, the family finally decided the destination—the Great National Forest. With
food, necessity and cookers loaded onto the car, the family squeezed (挤进) into the car. The car door closed, heat更多全科试卷及资料,请关注公众号:高中试卷君
was shut outside.
In the car, Jared, Grady’s younger brother was playing with a toy, making great noise. Grady’s mother talked
excitedly with his father. As soon as he sat in the car, Grady put on the earphones and turned on the music. He
neither wanted to join his brother nor joined any talk. After what seemed to be hours, the car stopped where they
headed. Grady threw down his backpack and slammed (砰地关上) the car door.
“This will be a lengthy week,” he said unhappily to no one in particular. He looked around the campground.
Hundreds of tall and green fir trees covered the mountainside like a green carpet. The sun would be setting soon.
Grady thought maybe the heat wouldn’t be unbearable. But actually now in the mountain, the hot July left him
extremely uncomfortable.
Grady hated camping, but it was something his family insisted on every summer. His father liked cooking over
an open air, telling stories about how to survive things like bear attacks and bites of bees. His mother and Jared
liked to hike and take pictures of animals. Jared had a collection of insect pictures that he had put on the walls in his
half of their room. Grady thought they were just scary and that Jared was a strange kid.
They set up camp—two tents, one for his parents and one for himself and Jared. While everyone else started
preparing dinner, Grady, looking for some place to cool down, set off for the nearby river, which was deep enough
to swim in.

A Fortunate Escape
“Truth or Dare, Ben?” Max questioned. Max, Ben and I were walking home together while I took small bites
of the beef burger I had grabbed from a shop nearby. “Truth or Dare” was a game we usually played to amuse
ourselves on the lengthy, boring journey home. Ben wanted a dare. “Well, Ben, I dare you to carry my bag all the
way home!” Max commanded as we laughed at poor Ben’s trouble.
As Ben pulled the heavy bag up his shoulder and adjusted the bag straps, he noticed that Max’s bag was
partially open. When he hurriedly put it on his back, an object flew out of the bag, and over the fence of our
neighbour’s house.
“Oh, no,” Max cried, “I think that was my English assignment.” Stretching his hand out and trying to
crawl(爬)under the fence to save the paper, Ben found that it was just out of reach.
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to climb over the fence to get it,” Ben said. He was barely able to climb up, using
the small gaps in the wooden fence as handholds as the fence was nearly as tall as him(which was not very tall),
and low enough for something to be thrown over it. Sliding down the fence, Ben grabbed the valued piece of paper,
complaining about injured dignity. Just then, a loud and frightening bark cut his words short.
“Woof, Woof!” Our neighbour, Mr Mason, owned a German shepherd(kind of dog), well-known for its
fierceness, which guarded the house. It was something we had overlooked, too focused on bringing back Max’s
assignment. Ben’s legs trembled like jelly and his face turned a deathly white as the German shepherd advanced
slowly on him like a wolf moving towards its target.

Tom was a skilled teenage surfer. He had always been attracted by the ocean and the challenge of riding its
waves. He had trained tirelessly for years, sharpening his skills and perfecting his technique. He had participated in
many competitions and won several titles. But one day, his world was turned upside down.
It was a routine training day. While Tom was concentrating on his training in the sea, a shark came in through
the broken shark-proof net and approached him. The animal knocked over Tom’s surfboard and bit his right leg,
tearing through his flesh (肉体) and causing massive damage. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Tom was
lucky to survive the attack. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received an emergency operation. With the
efforts of doctors, his leg was saved.
Tom’s recovery was long and painful, but he refused to give up on his dream of surfing. At first, his progress
