Finally, the big day arrived. I was going to spend four months in France, learning French.
Alice, my sister, was going as well. We arrived at the airport, feeling nervous and excited.
The flight went by quickly because I was so busy talking with Alice about our trip and how
different French life might be from life back home. We decided that we shouldn't spend too much
time together in France. We knew we wouldn't learn much French if we did that, . Even though
we agreed, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to say much the whole time I was in
France. However, when my host family(接待家庭)met me, I knew from the mother's warm
smile that everything would be OK.
It was still a bit stressful at first to try to understand and communicate, but after a couple of
weeks it became easier. I spent a lot of time with a lovely girl who was a friend of the family, and
we got on very well. In fact, I learned lots of interesting words from her, you know, the kind of
things you don't find in books! I had one shameful moment. I used the wrong word when I was
talking to a waiter, but he was relaxed about it and told me not to be afraid of making mistakes.
When the time came to say goodbye to my host family, I was very sad to leave.

However, I have brought back some wonderful memories from this experience. The most
important thing I've learned is that if you're open-minded and positive(积极的)about
learning a language, then it's much easier. I've come back much more confident in my ability.
I've even started watching a television show in French and I'm surprised to find that I can
understand a lot more than before my stay in France.
24. Why didn't the writer and Alice want to spend too much time together in France?
A. Because they talked too much during the flight.
B. Because they didn't get on well with each other.
C. Because they knew life in France would be different.
D. Because they wanted to get more chances to practice French.
25. How did the writer feel when she started her life in France?
A. Relaxed. B. Stressed. C. Confident. D. Surprised.
26. From the experience, the writer learned
A. how to make friends with strangers
B. how to live comfortably in a new country
C. to keep an active attitude toward language learning
D. to correct mistakes immediately after making them
C
With numbers of books and courses helping us develop self-discipline(自律), it seems
quite obvious that self-discipline is highly valued. However, this may overstate the
importance of being self-disciplined and make people worried. People with such worries
are likely to push themselves harder and harder. Once their energy is burned out or their
willpower breaks down, they will feel upset.
In fact, being self-disciplined isn't about leading a restrictive( 约 束 的 )lifestyle.
Although it seems to be usually connected with self-control and willpower, it still has to
be based on respect for one's own free will and effective methods. Some people are
caught in a "self-discipline trap(陷阱)" where they always work hard, and mistakes, failure
and laziness are not allowed. Is this really the way we can improve ourselves, or is it a
way to make things worse? Even though staying self-disciplined is beneficial for self-
improvement, it's never something everyone must do in life.
How can we avoid being over self-restrained? Here are some ideas.

Follow your own energy flow and limit. Going against it may produce unpleasant results.
For example, sleeping for five hours and then forcing yourself to get up for a morning run. The
harm caused by not getting enough sleep may outweigh the good brought by running.
Follow your own heart. Information on the Internet has created a hidden competitive
environment where many good examples lead the trends(潮流). People who see these are
more likely to follow. Listen to your own voice instead of others. Think and decide
whether it is what you truly want.
Change your goals and expectations. Some who are over self-restrained may set unrealistic
goals and expectations. They may never stop until it's perfect, even though nothing could really
be perfect. For example, losing 10 pounds in a week. It then easily goes into an unhealthy cycle
where they always set goals but never reach them.
Work smart instead of working hard. We might all have ever been stuck in a situation where,
no matter how much effort we've made, the progress is slow. Have you found better ways to do it
instead of just trying harder? For example, if I have a goal of learning 20 new words each day,
I might follow the Forgetting Curve(遗忘曲线)to do it more effectively:
27. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The meaning of self-discipline.
R. The ways to develop self-discipline.
C. The effects of being self-disciplined.
D. The reason for being self-disciplined.
28. To avoid being over self-restrained, we should ________________.
A. consider other people's advice
B. follow good examples on the Internet
C. set up achievable goals and expectations
D. raise our energy limit to get good results
29. Why does the writer use the example of learning new words in the last paragraph?
A. To stress the value of working hard.
B. To explain how effort influences progress.
C. To suggest a good way of learning a language.
D. To show the importance of finding effective methods.

Gossip is the information passed from one person to another about
other people's lives. You may think gossip is awful. Even dictionary
entries suggest that it is often unkind or untrue. And yet this common
idea is unreasonable.
Firstly, a study by Robbins and Karan in 2019 shows that gossip
common but much of it is just people sharing information. For their
study, 467 people's conversations were recorded. Robbins and Karan found that, on
average, these people gossiped for 52 minutes a day, with three quarters of the time spent
communicating non-evaluative(非评价性的)information. Only about 14 percent(百分比)of
the gossip was considered malicious, a much smaller percentage than the common idea
suggests, although to be fair, that was double the percentage of positive gossip.
Scientists consider gossip to be an important reason why our ancestors(祖先)were able
to stay alive. It helped spread important news, but more importantly, it provided
information about who was trustworthy and who might not work well with others in a
group, It allowed humans to build small communities with those who could be trusted, ensuring
a greater chance of living. Today, it seems that not much has changed. Gossip still allows us to
form, relationships and find out who we can work with best. Gossip also explains the
principles(行为准则)of our society. When we hear someone criticize a person's behaviour,
it is obvious that such behaviour is unacceptable and should not be copied. That's not to
say we should pay attention to everything we hear, but it gives us direction.
Of course, these days, our world is changing the nature of gossip. Our networks are
now larger, and some gossip can spread like wildfire. Our obsession(痴迷)with gossip
about well-known people may seem unimportant to some, but it serves to bring people
closer, Problems come up when gossip includes untrue information. This kind of gossip can
destroy people's lives.
So scientists say that it's important to share information that is unlikely to hurt others. If we
fail to do this, people will see us as someone who can't be trusted and may even avoid us.
Similarly, gossiping to improve one's own place in society is unacceptable. It's best to share
information that may act as a warning to others or encourage them to behave better. It's these
things that normally push people together rather than make them turn away from each other.

The Library With No Rules
When you walk by Hernando Guanlao's home on
Balagtas Street, downtown Manila, you will see thousands
of books on shelves and on the stairs. Each one is free to
anyone who wants it.
"People can borrow, take home, bring back or keep,
"says Guanlao. "Or they can share and pass on to another. But basically they should just take,
take!" He thinks
books need to live, and they're only alive if they are being read. "The act of giving books
makes your life meaningful, " says Guanlao.

The Reading Club 2000, as the project is called, began more than twenty years ago. "My
parents gave me my love of reading, " he says. "I started the club to honour them and to do some
kind of community service. So I put my old books—and my brothers' and sisters', maybe 100 in
all—outside, to see if anyone was interested. "
It took a while for people to work out that this was a library. It never closed and there were
no rules in it. But the project, offering everything from paperbacks to fashion magazines,
technical boaks and school textbooks, is becoming popular.
The success of the project is helped by the fact that the country, with a population of
92million, has fewer than 700 public libraries, and many people cannot afford to buy books.
Luckily, the project is spreading. Guanlao takes boxes af books-into—Manila's neighbourhoods
himself. He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the
country. and encouraged students to donate(捐赠)books.
Aurora Verayo, from a town several hours' drive from Manila, says she came to see Guanlao
to donate books, but he encouraged her to open her own library. "I’m going a step further and
offering reading activities for children, " she says. Mark, 16-yearold student, is organizing a book
donation with friends. "We've collected." he says, " We’re taking them to some poor books so
far, and we expect many more, areas next month. Books open minds. A book can take you
anywhere. "
34. What does Guanlao think of books?
35. Why did Guanlao start the Reading Club 2000?
36. What was special about Guanlao's library?
37. What do you think of the Reading Club 2000? Why do you think so? (List at least two
reasons)
