ANIMALS IN DANGER!
How much do you know about animals in danger? Read the short passages below.
10 million reptiles are killed every year. Their skin is used to make fashion items, like handbags and shoes.
The main reason whales are in danger is that man kills them for their meat and oils.Orangutans live in rain forests. They want to live in peace, but people are cutting down the trees for wood and
farming. This is a big problem because the trees are the orangutan’s homes. They are very difficult to find and study
because they are shy animals. They are also our cousins!
There isn’t enough bamboo for pandas to eat because man has cut down nearly half the bamboo forests.
Research has shown that there are only about 600 giant pandas left in the wild in the world. Most of them live in
China.
Some people steal the turtle’s eggs to eat. The skin of the turtle is used to make some jewellery(珠宝).
In the Far East, rhinoceros’ horns are used to make medicines. They are also used to make ornaments.
So what can you do to help protect them?
●Try not to buy jewellery made from animals.
●Try to keep the earth clean and free from pollution.
●Tell other people about what you’ve learned.

Have you ever turned off your alarm clock on the weekend to hope that it would pay off your weekly sleep
debt (债 )? A study in Current Biology may crush those hopes, which means the catch-up sleep weekend is nothelpful. The bad health effects of sleep deprivation ( 缺乏 ) on weekdays cannot be repaid by long weekend sleep.
According to a study by the University of Colorado, participants who took part in the study only slept for five
hours on weekdays while sleeping as much as they wanted during a weekend. To our surprise, they got nearly three
pounds over two weeks and experienced metabolic disruption (代谢混乱) that would make them become ill easily.
“If there are benefits of catch-up sleep, they’re gone when you go back to your routine. It’s very short-lived,”
said Kenneth Wright, director of the sleep laboratory. “These health effects are long-term. It’s kind of like smoking
once was—people would smoke and wouldn’t see an immediate effect on their health, but people will say now that
smoking is not a healthy lifestyle choice.”
,
Kenneth Wright said that the study suggests sleep should come first especially for the people spending a lot
of time in watching television or on smart phones. “Even when people don’t have a choice about losing sleep
because of child-care responsibilities or job schedules, they should think about sleep in the same way they think
about a healthy diet or exercise.”
Michael Grandner, the sleep program director at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, said,“Imagine
a person who ate nothing but cheeseburgers and French fries, Monday through Friday, but only had vegetables on
weekends and tried to call that a healthy diet. That is just what people are doing when they sleep less on weekdays
with the idea that they can make up for it on the weekend,” he argued.
Some other researchers found an interesting difference between men and women, in which women got less
recovery sleep on the weekend, and they also were able to control their eating behavior better than men on
weekends.
32. The word “crush” in Paragraph 1 probably means ________.
A. build B. break C. show D. take
33. Which of the following is TRUE according to Kenneth Wright?
A. People who sleep less would become fatter.
.
B The catch-up sleep is helpful over the long term.
C. Sleep is as important as a healthy diet and exercise.
D. People who keep to their routines would be healthy.
34. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To give us some advice on weekday sleep.
B. To encourage us to sleep more on weekends.
C. To share researchers’ unhappy experiences of sleep.
D. To introduce some researches on weekend catch-up sleep.
DThere is great excitement and argument over Artificial Intelligence (AI, 人工智能 ). The argument about
whether robots will replace teachers in the classroom is very heated. Some people think this revolution (革命) is
sure to happen in the next ten years. Others think that the value a good teacher brings, not only to the classroom
setting, but in developing a child’s confidence and creativity outside lessons, cannot be easily replaced.
AI is not new for us and is already being used successfully in many fields, such as medicine, finance and so
on. So what does this mean for our future? In my view, AI will help kids to think more freely and creatively. Can AI
possibly cut down the teaching work in the future, too? Of course. Our teachers are always busy preparing
materials for their lessons. Just imagine how happy they would be if they don’t have to copy hundreds of paper, but
instead, have this task or others done by machines.
However, most importantly, I do not believe AI will be able to imitate (模仿) the human mental condition
totally, especially empathy (同理心) and emotional intelligence. What makes learning memorable is shared
experience, human interaction, and long-lasting positive relationships. For example, experienced teachers can adapt
(调整) their interaction with a student if he has suffered a serious loss. But there is no evidence that robots can
imitate this adaptability well.
I also believe we need to continue to celebrate our kids’ individuality (个性) and their ability not only to make
decisions but also make the right decision. These are skills that they can get as they gain more life experience and
are given the space to experiment.
To what degree can teachers use AI in their classes? You can have all the data you like with the help of AI, but
great teachers will also need to depend on their own gut feeling (直觉).
35. Some people think a good teacher might be able to ________.
A. use AI as much as possible in the class teaching
B. help kids think more freely and creatively than AI
C. have high intelligence to deal with the heavy teaching work
D. develop a child’s confidence and creativity outside the lessons
36. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why teachers can be replaced in classrooms.
B. There is argument over Artificial Intelligence.
C. How helpful AI can be to both students and teachers.
D. AI is already being used successfully in many fields.
37. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Will AI Replace Teachers in the Classroom?
B. What can AI Bring Students in the Classroom?C. Is AI a Good Way to Help with Children’s Learning?
D. How do Teachers Use AI in Their Classroom Teaching?
