The Hair in the Lunch Box
Once I was a teacher in a primary school and many students there would take lunch from home every day.
Every noon my students sat beside each other and talked about the delicious food they took with them.
Students liked to share their meals with friends and they all looked happy. However, there was one student, Jackie.
Then one day, I heard that other students found hair in Jackie’s lunch box several times. So the students
believed he was not a clean boy and they did not like to taste his food.
Jackie didn’t talk about this with me until one day I had to visit his parents because of his study. He told me
his address and it was a very poor place. When I knocked at the door in front of his house, I heard Jackie’s happy
voice. He opened the door very quickly.
“Are you Jackie’s head teacher?” there was a weak voice. To my surprise, it was an old blind woman near the
door. The room was dark and soon I realized the blind woman was his single mum. However, both the mum and the
boy were happy and they thanked God for their life.
The next day, Jackie told a long story about how he helped his mother to make each meal and how hard it was
for his mother to look after him. All the students listened to him carefully. That noon, I saw many students sit with
Jackie and share their meals together.
23. Why didn’t the students like to share food with Jackie?

D. Good teachers often visit their students and look after them.

Photography has been a popular hobby for a long time. People used to take photos with cameras and then havethem printed to share with friends. It’s still popular these days, but thanks to technology, this old hobby is changing
a lot. For example, and 30 seconds later your photo is online. People everywhere are seeing exactly what you just
saw.
This is called photo sharing. Photo sharing is using the Internet to share and store digital photos. There are
many kinds of photo sharing, but we are going to look at two:social network sharing and subscription (订阅
费)based sharing.
A social network is a website that people use to have fun and keep in touch. If a website lets you chat with
friends, share information and send pictures, it’s a social network. The world’s biggest social networks are Twitter,
and of course, Facebook. If you have ever posted a photo on a social network site, a problem brought by it is that
it’s easy for strangers to see your pictures.
When you use a subscription based photo sharing website, you pay money to store your photos online. Then,
you can use your photo anytime. This is safer(隐私).The problem, of course.
Technology has also brought us a new business called print on demand. To use print on demand, you have to
go to a photo book company. Here’s how it works. You select some photos and you send them to a photo book
company. The photo book company arranges your photos into a fancy book. You can pick every detail of your
photo book. You can choose the size, shape and brightness of every picture. People pay photo book companies to
make photo albums, calendars, postcards.
Technology is changing our lives all the time. What will be changed next? Who knows?
26. What is the problem of sharing photos online?
A. You can’t store photos online. B. It’s difficult to share information.
C. Your pictures are open to strangers. D. Posting photos online is expensive.
27. What can we learn about print on demand?
A. It’s the best way for people to share photos online.
B. It helps people to print photos according to their needs.
C. It gives best service for people to enjoy printing photos.
D. It enables photo book companies to make a lot of money.
28. What is the best title of this passage?
A. How Technology Has Changed The World.
B. Advantages and Disadvantages of Photo Sharing.
C. Social Networks: A New Way to Share Photos.
D. Print On Demand: A Better Way to Share Photos.
DState History or World Gardens?
Jacob Barone, Principal
Sand Hill Middle School
Richmond, VA 23274
Dear Mr. Barone,
I am writing on behalf of the seventh-grade class. The traditional seventh-grade spring field trip(外出参观/考
察) is to the State History Museum. This year, however, the benefits(益处) of the new field trip would make the
extra time worthwhile. The garden hours are from 10:00 A. M. to 6:00 P. M. The class could leave school at 8:00 A.
M. and arrive just as the gardens open. We would have time to explore the gardens, eat lunch, and return to school
by 4:00 P. M.
Many seventh-grade students have already visited the history museum. Since the museum is so close, students
often go there with their families, with scouting troops, but this year we are hoping to learn something new.
The purpose(目 的) of the new field trip destination is to help students understand the different environments
of our planet. The World Botanical Gardens contains the second-largest walk-through Amazon rainforest exhibit in
the country. Some of the other popular exhibits are the Giant Flowers, the Arid Deserts.
Since seventh-grade students are studying plants and plant energy in science class, visiting the botanical
gardens would be an educational and helpful field trip. The information we could learn there would be an excellent
way to supplement our science studies .We would observe plants growing in special displays that are similar to
their natural habitats. Charts located near each display provide information about the plants. This information will
help when learning about topics such as how food webs work and how plants respond to light. The botanical
gardens also provide educational workshops and presentations to groups.
In addition, the field trip supports what we are studying in our English class. We are currently reading Which
Way to the Amazon? This novel, which is set in a rainforest and based on scientific facts.
Please consider this request for the seventh-grade field trip to World Botanical Gardens. Any increase in the
traditional(传统的) field trip expenses, such as the longer bus ride.
If I can provide additional information, please let me know.
Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Robert Burns
Seventh-Grade Class President(学生主席)
Sand Hill Middle School

D. From 8:00 A. M. to 2:00 P. M.

Lao She Teahouse, located in Qianmen Street, has become the most famous teahouse in Beijing. One reason is

Have you ever heard about the “candy test?” Put a candy in front of a child and give him two choices: eat it
now or wait 15 minutes and get two. According to a classic study, children able to wait for the second candy have
better academic, social and health outcomes years later. Since these early experiments(特点) can predict better life
outcomes. These children go on to have more educational and career success and live longer, healthier lives.
However, our new study has found another link (联系) between behavior (what people do), my teammates
and I report that children who were considered as “inattentive(注意力不集中的)” by kindergarten teachers had
lower earnings (money got from working), and those considered as prosocial—such as being kind, helpful and
considerate—earned more.
Focusing on specific observable behavior might lead to more reliable and useful predictors of future life
outcomes. My and my teammates, new study was based on analysis of nearly 3, 000 children living in Canada. For
boys and girls, for boys only, ratings of quarrelling and fighting were linked with lower earnings.
Besides, our study shows that inattention may be among the most powerful early behavioral predictors of
future earnings. It also shows that it is possible to find children at risk of lower future earnings based on a single
teacher assessment made in kindergarten. If these children can be found out, then it may be possible to help them to
change in time—for example, or by providing support or prevention programs—and thus improve their life
chances. The classic candy study failed to explain IQ and family background, which are known to influence future life
success. But an important strength of our study is that it examined a range of specific childhood behavior and
controlled the children’s IQ and family background (such as their parents’ education level and job), something not
all studies in the past have done. In other words, but IQ and family background are much more important.
However, there is still one problem which is not solved in our study, why the behavior linked with future
earnings appear to differ for men and women. The answer may, suggest different ways to help.
While the ability to wait for a couple of candies may not predict life success, other traits do seem to matter.
Where earnings are concerned, kindergarteners’ ability to pay attention and the ability to be kind appear particularly
important.
56. Which is true about the “candy test”?
A. Children’s love for candies is linked with their scores at school.
B. Children would decide to improve their skills after taking the candy test.
C. Most children could wait for over 15 minutes to have the second candy.
D. It shows that some childhood traits can predict the children’s future life outcomes.
57. Paragraph 3 and 4 are mainly about ________.
A. the importance of examining children’s bad behavior
B. the findings of the writer and his colleagues’ study
C. the purpose of the writer and his colleagues’ study
D. the advantages of studying the children’s IQ and family background
58. What can you learn from the passage?
A. The writer and his colleagues did research on about 3000 children from different countries.
B. There are few ways to change childhood behavior and improve children’s life chances.
C. IQ and family background are much more important for future success than the ability to wait.
D. The classic candy test explained how family background helps make future earnings higher.
59. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. inattentive and prosocial children have higher future earnings
B. most childhood behavior is associated with future life success
C. it is really important to develop children’s ability to pay attention and be kind
.
