desk. Julia explained, “I’m sorry. I was cleaning the tables in the science room. Someone spilled(洒)the
chemical, so cleaning took me longer than usual. ”
Mr. Malone replied. “I’ve talked to you about your lateness. I am afraid you won’t be able to go with us in the
field trip.”“But…” Julia cried. Mr. Malone stopped her. “Unless your parent comes in to discuss this with

you got yourself in trouble. ”Mrs. Thompson said. Julia nodded. Julia’s dad continued, “You’re still responsible for
breaking the rules; even if it was for a good reason. Do you have any ideas for a punishment ? ” Julia shook her
head hopelessly.
“Normally, your lateness would prevent you from attending some school activities. However, I have
considered the reason and will allow you to go on the trip.” Mrs. Thompson said. Julia jumped out of her seat,
repeating, “Thank you, thank you, thank you !” “Don’t be too excited. You’ll have a one-day detention (课后留校)

Scientists have found that migrating (迁徙) birds fly not just in groups all the time, but in “V” formation and
they have also tried to find out what good points birds get from this “V” formation. Now, a research group from the
University of London may have found the answer – migrating birds fly in a “V” to save energy, according to a
study published in the journal Nature.
When a bird flaps (拍打) its wings, it makes the air move in different directions. Scientists found in the study
that the air creates an upward-moving wave at the tips of the wings (翼尖), which means that if a bird flies around
the wingtips of another bird, it can get some help from the rising air and then they can use less energy to stay in the
air.
But there is a small problem – the lead bird gets no lift advantage and can easily get tired. This is why a group
of migrating birds change their leaders from time to time, according to The New York Times.
Scientists were also surprised to see that migrating birds timed their wing beats and changed their places in a
very simple way to make the most of the lifting effect while avoiding areas where the air moved downward.
“They’re able to sense what’s going on from the bird in front, where this ‘good air’ is coming from and how to
help themselves perfectly in it,” lead researcher Steven Portugal told BBC.
In fact, the “V” formation has long been thought to help birds fly more efficiently (有效地) without wasting
too much energy. Jet fighters (战斗机) were also found to be able to reduce their energy use by up to 18% by
staying near the wingtips of other Jet fighters. Both of these findings led scientists to wonder that the “V” formation
had an efficiency purpose, but until now they still don’t have enough facts to show what they are thinking about is
really true.
“For scientists, the new study provides an insight into an interesting natural thing. But it could mean even
more for airplane companies – helping them understand how they can imitate that with their plane formations to
save energy,” said Portugal.
27. According to the new study, when birds migrate, ______.
A. they don’t often change their lead birds
B. they fly in “V” formation to make best use of lift
C. they fly in “V” formation to protect the birds behind
D. the air around them makes it hard for the lead bird to fly fast
28. What is the importance of the new study according to the article?
A. It suggests that the “V” formation can help planes fly faster.
B. It has led scientists to study more about different kinds of birds.C. It might help airplane companies to think of ways to save energy.
D. It shows that the jet fighters form the best shape of a “V” formation.
29. The underlined word “imitate” in the last paragraph probably means “______”.
A. use B. change C. learn D. copy
30. The writer writes the passage to ______.
A. tell how migrating birds find their ways
B. explain how birds get help from migration
C. introduce some uses of migrating birds’ “V” formation
D. report new findings about migrating birds’ “V” formation

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These
inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of
these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted
to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol(酒精) in their breath,
the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an
emergency even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who
thought his children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the
TV was generated(产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal(踩踏板) very
hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or
not, this invention was an ashtray(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray
was activated (启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when
you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which
would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine
at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs
(转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem
was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes
twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your
hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were
watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you!
Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.31. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the inventions mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. The writer regrets he knew nothing about the inventions.
B. The writer wonders if the inventions will be popular soon.
C. The writer thinks people will benefit from the inventions.
.
D. The writer finds these inventions are the strangest of all
32. What can we know from the passage?
A. The father used his invention to stop children watching too much TV.
B. It was very bad for the drivers to blow into a bag before their driving.
C. The bike crossing rivers was considered one of the best inventions.
.
D. The invention of new shoes would make players run much faster
33. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Popular Inventions Today. B. Technology and Invention.
C. The History of Invention. D. Inventions with a Difference.

Think about the distance(距离)you traveled in the last six months of your life. About how many miles
(kilometers)did you go?Lucid went quite a distance. On March 22, 1996,she started a journey. She traveled
188 days, 4 hours, and 14 seconds in total. This is a little over six months. So what distance did Lucid travel? She
went 75.2 million miles(1,203,200,000 kilometers)!
How could Lucid go so far? How could she journey so fast? Lucid was an American astronaut and she was in
space. She lived on a space station. The space station was the Russian space station Mir. She lived and worked with
two Russian astronauts.
On Mir,it was hard for Lucid to know what day it was. Why?Mir did not stay in one place. It orbited the Earth. It
went around the Earth.Mir’s orbit meant that darkness did not mean the day was over. Darkness fell many times
during a 24-hour period.Darkness fell about every 45 minutes. Lucid did something to help her remember what day
it was. She wore pink socks on every seventh day. The pink socks reminded Lucid about something else, too. The
pink socks helped Lucid remember that Jell-O would be served for dinner. On Mir,Jell-O was a special treat. It was
only served on Sunday.
Lucid worked hard to deserve the honor of working on Mir. She went to school for a long time. She was one of the
first six women to be accepted into the astronaut-training program. She flew on several American missions. When
accepted for Mir, she had to learn Russian in less than 18 months. On Mir, Lucid conducted many experiments.
One experiment she conducted was with wheat. Lucid grew wheat. Growing plants in space was important, becausegreen plants could provide oxygen and food for space travelers.
