Before I started school, people felt that I was not going to be successful. At the age of four, I started speech
lessons because I could not speak well enough for anyone to understand me.
The first grade was a struggle (奋斗,难事). I had difficulty speaking. I also couldn’t learn to read. The
second grade was not much better. I still struggled with the inability to read. In the third grade, a new school was
built. It was near my home. I went there with my parents and helped to get the school ready so that we could move
to the new one. However, things didn’t get better for the next two years.
It was in the fifth grade. Mrs. Wakefield was my teacher, and she was a good teacher. She did not make me
feel unconfident. Instead, she did her best to let me know that I could be whatever I wanted to be. And that is just
what I did.
,
For the past 22 years I have been a fifth grade teacher. Because of Mrs. Wakefield’s influence on my life.
I am now encouraging students who have had difficulties in their lives to believe that they can deal with any
difficulty successfully and become someone. I have won many awards (奖) up to now, such as “Teacher of the
Year”. I think I should thank my fifth grade teacher. She believed in me and helped me to be all that I could be.

Children’s lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or
I did?
It’s difficult to look back on one’s own childhood. I have four brothers and sisters, and many memories are all
about being with them, playing board games on the living room floor, spending days in the street with the other
neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring(探究,探索)the nearby woods. My
parents hardly appear in these these memories, except as providers of meals or blame after some risky adventure.
These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed quickly. Firstly, families are smaller, and
there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there just isn’t time to
bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today’s boys
and girls spend much of their time alone. Another main change is that youngsters today tend to spend a lot of their
free time at home, inside. This is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or
imagined dangers, so they wouldn’t dream of letting their children play outside by themselves.
Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games
have taken the place of the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The funny thing is that so
many ways of playing games are called “interactive”, because children can work together or communicate with
others in games or the information can be passed between the computer and the person who uses it. It seems like
they have friends to play with. But the fact that you can play electronic games on your own at home increases(提
高) the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today.
Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that
they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.
31. What is the purpose(目的)of the question given in the first paragraph?
A. To show who the passage is written for.
B. To gather people’s opinions on childhood.
C. To get people’s attention and lead in the topic.
D. To compare the childhood lives of two generations.
32. What does the underlined word “interactive”mean in Paragraph 4 ?
A. able to affect (影响)each other B. able to help each other
C. able to learn from each other D. able to care for each other
.
33 What does the fourth paragraph mainly talk about ?
A. Young people today shouldn’t play electronic games.
B. Computer and video games have replaced the board games.C. Board games are much more interesting than computer games.
D. Some games that young people play today aren’t really good.

The Huge Baobab
One of the most amazing trees in the world is known as the baobab. This kind of tree mainly grows in South
Africa and Australia.
Sometimes, it is hard to tell what the name of a tree is because they look like each other. But this is not a
problem with the baobab. Its appearance is quite different, so people can’t mistake it for another tree. The baobab is
very wide at the base, so people often take shelter under it. One Australian baobab was so large that people were
able to turn part of the tree into a small room. Prisoners were kept inside the tree room as a resting place when they
were transported to the city. The tree itself was so strong and wide that it could hold a large group of people. The
strongest tree in the world is over 1,835 years old now.
People also call it the “giving tree”. The tree’s fruit is very delicious and is a tasty treat that is eaten in many
African countries. The fruits have also been found to be very healthy. They are full of vitamins and minerals.
People make porridge and favor soft drinks from the fruit. Since the tree grows in dry environments, it has to store
water. The tree soaks in water when it is wet. During dry seasons, the baobab tree can use the stored water. Some
baobabs can store thousands of gallons of water. Of course, the baobabs also provide the people of sunny South
Africa with some shade during hot African days.
Sadly, in recent years, the baobab trees are dying because of climate change. Scientists are trying hard to take
action to protect them.
