Wallet Back
This is a story about a learning experience. It had a big effect on the way I live my life. The ____13____ in

Lately, I’ve started keeping a small study diary. I write down everything I need to do and

who stay inside.
Protect the strongest parts of the body. Seat belts are designed to fix your body at its strongest parts. For an
older child and adult, these parts are the hips（臀部） and shoulders.
Spread out the force in an accident. Seat belts spread the force of the accident over a wide area of the body. By
putting less stress on one area, they can help you avoid serious injury. Seat belts also help keep your upper body
away from the hard parts of the car if you stop suddenly or hit by another car.
Help the body to slow down. A quick speed causes injury. With the help of the seat belts, your body can have
more time to slow down in an accident.
Protect your brain and spinal cord（脊柱）. Seat belts are designed to protect these two key areas of the
human body. Head and spinal cord injuries may be hard to see immediately, but they can cause death. Therefore,
it’s of great importance to protect these parts.

Do We Say What We Think?
,
“It’s raining cats and dogs!” Although this sentence is not very common in England any more it clearly
shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that often gives troubles to language learners is that they
understand every word in a sentence but the meaning remains unclear——like this sentence that actually means
“It’s raining very heavily!” However, it’s no just idioms（惯用语） that cause difficulties for people learning
English.
The British are often considered to be polite and keep their feeling to themselves but this can be very
confusing for non-native speakers. We often don’t say what we are thinking —in fact we often say the opposite!
Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean, “You should come round for tea!” Is this a real
invitation or is the person just being polite? Generally, British people are less open than people from other cultures,
so we aren’t quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say but often don’t really
mean, so when no further details （细节） are given, you can probably think it was made in the name of
politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?
When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were
just being polite. Of course, I was wrong. The invitations were always from the bottom of their hearts, and they did
me to visit them. I was always surprised by how welcoming people were. In fact, I think I spent more time at other
people’s houses than my own!
This summer, while working in Austria, one of my friends made me think about invitations again. She invited
me to join her and her boyfriend for a meal out. Although touched by the invitation, I immediately had the thought
that she was just being polite, so I told her that I didn’t want to interrupt them. She replied with, “If I didn’t want
you to come, I wouldn’t have invited you in the first place.”
This reminded me again that politeness depends on which culture we are in. In England, we often think it’s
polite to offer or suggest something even if we don’t actually want to do it, but in other cultures people are more
direct. Perhaps if English people just say what they are thinking, things would be a lot of easier—especially for
people from other countries.

Dealing with sleep-away Camp
I have never been away from home, at least not for more than three days, much less two whole weeks. When I
got the chance to go to Journalism Camp, I was afraid. Of the 19 other students there, I Knew no one.
What if I had to go home during camp time because I wouldn't be able to get used to the new situation? What
if my roommate and I don't get along? How do I even use a washing machine?
Well, after the first night, nearly all of my problems were solved. The students were amazing, and my
roommate was perfect. She knew how to do crazy braids(辫子) with my long hair and she loved to listen to me talk
loudly! I couldn't have asked for more.
The two weeks nearly flew by, and I learned to take responsibility for myself: washing clothes, cleaning and
other things like that.
However, in the process I didn’t realize how tied I had become to the usual order of waking up early, running
to get to the newsroom in time, and coming back to a large room full of friends who shared similar feelings as I did.
On the last day, I couldn’t get myself to turn in my room keys. It couldn't be over. I become emotionally tied
really easily, so it was hard for me to pull away. I couldn't push away my tears. Leaving camp Just left me empty.
I wasn't having the “blues”, but I felt really sad about leaving. Returning home, I was in the state of
disappointment for a few days. I kept to myself, sleeping through most of the day so I wouldn’t have time to look
back.
I needed to get used to life at home again. This was my challenge. I was lucky to have the two-week
experience, but I had to learn to accept that not all things last forever.
I could still keep in touch with my new friends while continuing on with the rest of my summer. I know I will
go through the same experience when I leave high school after senior year. High school life will never return after
graduation, but I can still keep in touch with my friends and look forward to other experiences I will have.
