Slowly but surely, Grace and her grandparents were making progress. Boxes of all sizes were placed throughout
the house. Grace’s grandparents had lived in the house for years and they had collected many things.
The dining room was full of memories. Grace’s grandfather kept many fine dinner plates from his hometown.
Grace remembered that they ate from the red, yellow, and blue plates during important holidays. After carefully
wrapping (包裹) the plates and putting them into a box, Grace lifted it up and moved it out of the way. But the box
was too heavy. It suddenly fell from her arms and dropped to the floor. All three of them heard the plates shatter.
“I’m sorry!” Grace apologised.
“It’s okay, ” her grandfather said quietly. “It was an accident.”
They opened the box and, sure enough, many of the plates were broken. Only a few remained hole. Looking at

the small pieces, Grace felt really terrible. She knew these plates were passed down from her great grandparents.
“Don’t worry,” her grandmother said, patting her on the back. Carefully, they put the broken pieces into a rubbish
bag.
They continued packing, but Grace still felt very sorry. She was trying very hard to think of a way to make it up
for her grandparents. Soon, Grace’s father came to pick her up. She kissed her grandparents both, picked up the bag
of the broken pieces and left.
“What’s that?” her father asked, as Grace climbed into the car.
Grace looked at the bag as an idea came to her. “This,” she said, “is an art project.”
The following day, Grace went to an art store and bought everything she needed. Then she started to work. She
used a thin board as the base. Then she took out the colorful plate pieces and glued them in a creative way on the
board. When it was dry, Grace wrapped it up.
A few days later, Grace’s family had a big dinner at her grandparents’ new house. She handed her gift to her
grandparents.
“This is fantastic, Grace!” said her grandfather. “I can’t wait to hang it up in our new home!”

When you think of robots, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Do you think of science fiction movies
like Star Wars, where robots of all shapes and sizes are part of daily life? The word “robot” itself comes from a play
written in 1920 by Karel Capek. In the play, people create robots to do some everyday tasks.
Today, most robots don’t look like human. Modern robots take many forms and are good at many things, from
sweeping the floors in your home to working in factories. They are even exploring the surface of the moon. They

bring many benefits (益处) to people. But there is an interesting irony (讽刺) in the world of robots which describes a
surprising problem: What humans find easy is extremely complicated for a robot. However, what humans find difficult
is pretty easy for a robot. For example, picking up clothes in a messy room is simple for people. But that kind of
chore is very hard for a robot. Another example is the game of chess. People might find it difficult to win the game
of chess all the time. But robots like Alpha-Go can be programmed to play it very well.
This is because robots are very good at doing things in controlled environments. However, moving through a
room filled with random (随机的) objects is hard for robots, along with picking up objects of different shapes and
sizes without damaging them. In short, it is very difficult for them to deal with certain types of variables (变量).
It turns out that one of the most difficult things to improve in robots is their ability to control objects. Luckily,
great progress is being made in the development of robots. On the one hand, exciting developments in making human-
like hands and legs are underway. On the other hand, the biggest progress might result from using virtual learning (虚拟
学习) to “teach” robots through computer simulations (模拟).
In this way, robots can “guess” what to do without an order when they meet unfamiliar things in the real
world.
Soon, robots may be able to do those things that humans find simple. That means big changes in what robots
can do and how they can help us with daily tasks. Robots might make movies a reality.
27. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To give an example. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To explain what robots are. D. To show how robots develop.
28. According to the passage, what might be difficult for robots?
A. Picking up things in a mess. B. Making cars in factories.
C. Washing the dishes. D. Playing chess.
29. What’s the writer’s opinion about robots in the future?
A. They can benefit people more by making improvements.
B. They can hardly develop until they look like human.
C. They will deal with new things depend on orders.
D. They will cause further problems for people.
Sophia is smart, talented and incredibly nice. As a team leader, she wishes Nathan, a member of her history
project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize (批评) him, Sophia offered polite encouragement trying to
push him instead, only to find that Nathan kept falling behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to
take on more work, complained about both Sophia and Nathan, while Nathan himself complained that he was not
treated fairly.

How did poor Sophia get into this mess? The primary reason was that Sophia failed in a key aspect of
leadership—the duty to provide clear feedback (反馈) for team members. This isn’t simply a duty but a correctness.
Failing to question or criticize Nathan’s work, Sophia was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure, like
Nathan in this case; they’re just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from
their leaders. However, Sophia, in this case, withheld (拒绝给) a gift from Nathan.
“You’d better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback,” says Harry Kraemer, a professor of
management and strategy at Northwestern University, “to help figure out (弄明白) someone’s best fit—in their
particular job or in the organization.”
This approach also prevents surprises. It’s not uncommon to see someone suddenly removed from a team.
They may have deserved (应受) it, but with a kind leader, they wouldn’t have been caught off-guard, because they
would have been receiving open, honest, continuous and clear judgment of their performance.
Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? “We like to be liked,” Kraemer says. So we avoid
anything that may cause unpleasantness, but that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place for
them. “If you like to be liked, the chance of being respected is extremely low. However, if you start off focusing on
being respected, you have a chance of being liked.” Kraemer adds. The most difficult part for the leader, of course,
involves criticizing someone. That is what a nice leader finds hard.
Back to Sophia’s case. Not telling Nathan how he was on the team only made a hark situation worse. But with
a different mindset (思维模式), she could have set herself and Nathan up for success.
30. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance
B. open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members
C. criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader
D. being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect
31. According to the writer, Sophia should ________.
A. patiently encourage Nathan to try his best
B. wisely have Nathan dropped out of the project
C. politely show Nathan the improvement he made
D. clearly tell Nathan her judgment of his performance
32. The expression “caught off-guard” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. guided impatiently B. sent out unfairly
C. treated unexpectedly D. kicked out carelessly
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? ________

四、阅读表达。
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
It is hardly news that people are using the Internet to communicate with others more and more. Some people
fear that someday we will no longer feel the need to talk face to face. However, some recent studies suggest that
people communicate even more than they used to. Whatever you agree with, it is clear and no doubt that human
communication has changed in the 21st century.
In June 2008, a British psychiatrist, Himanshu Tyagi, warned that communicating on social networking sites
could have a negative effect on the generation of people born after 1990. This generation has never known a world
without the Internet. They use the Internet to communicate with others so much that they may have trouble forming
real relationships. He said, “The Internet is a world where everything moves fast and changes all the time, where
relationships are quickly ended at the click of a mouse.”
Another psychologist, Dr. Aric Sigman, warned of the physical effects that come with using social networking
sites. He suggests that less interaction (互动) with people face to face could have biological effects on the human
body. Without real personal interaction, the body does not react the same way people were meeting face to face.
Except for these warnings, there are some studies that show the positive sides of social networking sites. The
results of one study show that using social networking sites has increased the self-esteem (自尊心) of young adults.
Another suggests that college students using these sites feel more “connected” with people when they use them. In
addition to scientific studies, there are many who feel that the benefits of social networking sites overweigh (超过)
the possible negative sides. Many people, especially those who spend a lot of time at home, for various reasons, are
able to communicate with many people using these sites.
Perhaps the key to this new communication style is self-control and common sense. If someone spends all of
his time of the Internet, and never actually sees friends face to face, that seems like an unhealthy way to live. But if
someone spends time on the Internet, some of which is spent arranging meetings for “real” time together, then it
seems almost complementary (互补的). Balance is the key to keeping communication alive and well in the 21st
century.
