There was once a boy called Tony Webb. He always loved to show off how many friends he had at school.
One day his grandfather said to him, “Tony, I bet (打赌) you a big bag of popcorn that you don’t have as many
friends as you think. I’m sure many of them are nothing more than companions (同伴).”
Tony accepted the bet at once. However, he wasn’t sure how to test whether his classmates were real friends or
not, so he asked his grandfather. The old man answered, “Wait a minute.” Then he left and returned soon as if
carrying something in his hands, but Tony could see nothing there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair because it’s impossible to be seen. It’s rather difficult to sit on, but if you take
it to school and manage to sit on it you’ll start its magic and it’ll be able to tell who your real friends are.”
Tony, brave and determined, set off for school with the strange and invisible (隐形的) chair. At break time, he
asked everyone to form a circle, and he put himself in the middle, with his chair. Having difficulty seeing it, Tony
tried to sit on the chair but he missed the seat and fell straight onto his backside. Everyone around him had a pretty
good laugh.
“Wait! Let me try again,” Tony said. But again, he missed the seat, causing more surprised looks and a few
catcalls. Tony didn’t give up and kept trying to sit on the magic chair. But he kept falling to the ground until
suddenly he tried again but didn’t fall. Looking around, Tony saw three of his best friends holding him up.
However, many others he had thought of as friends had done nothing but made fun of him.
And there, the show came to an end. Tony understood that true friends were those who cared for him, and not
just the companions that happened to be passing by. And someone who took joy in his misfortunes (不幸) was not a
real friend.

itself is an unusual machine.
Lots of information has been written on the subject of “you”. You might wonder about your body. Most people
think that the big picture of how your body systems work together is important to understand. Sometimes the
details interest us the most. Let’s go on the way to get a haircut.
Why don’t haircuts hurt? Snip, snip—the scissors fly around your head. Your hair grows from living cells, but
the hair that’s cut is not alive. What’s the story here?
Each hair on your head grows from a root that is under your skin. The root produces hair cells in a special tube
called a follicle (毛囊). When new hair cells are made at the root, they push older hair cells up the follicle.
As older hair cells move toward the surface of your skin, they change. They join together and harden. Then
they die. The strand (股) of hair that comes out of your head does not have living cells in it. That’s why a haircut
doesn’t hurt!
You probably have about 100, 000 hairs on your head right now. Hair strands grow all the time, then fall out
and start to grow again. It usually does this in different stages. That’s why you don’t lose all of your hair at once.
In fact, your hair is just a part of all those interesting things of your body. You might be wide-eyed and staring
at one of these creations. If you want to know more about them, keep reading.
27. What do most people think is important to understand?
A. How your body systems work together.
B. Why you are an amazing and unusual person.
C. What the information on the subject of you is.
D. Where you can get a haircut without feeling hurt.
28. The underlined word “snip” in the third paragraph probably means ________.
A. enter B. afford C. cut D. copy
29. A haircut doesn’t hurt because ________.
A. the root produces hair cells in a special tube
B. living cells die before coming out of the head
C. you have too many hairs growing on your head
D. hair cells can start to grow again after being cut

Following the crowd (随大流) may not always be in a person’s best interest. However, a new study shows that
teens who go along with their friends may become healthier as adults. Scientists have known that close friendships
help improve health. People who do their own thing may experience unpleasant feelings and get sick. Those
findings inspired Joseph Allen, a scientist, to look at teen behavior. Allen’s group noticed that experiences during
teen years might influence adult health.
Scientists interviewed 171 teens every year for five years starting at the age of 13. These teens became the
focal (焦点的) teens in the study. They asked the focal teens about both positive and negative questions of
friendship. The scientists also spoke to their closest friends. They asked the friends how likely the focal person was
to follow the crowd, go along with the friends or keep on doing his or her own thing.
They interviewed the same 171 people again when they grew up, at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the
questions surveyed each person’s overall health. The scientists found a correlation (相互关系) between a teen’s
behavior and adult health. Firstly, teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Secondly, teens
who held back (抑制) their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults than those who shared feelings with a
close friend. What’s more, the study found that teens who went along with what their friends wanted, instead of
being independent, also were healthier in their twenties.
The correlation held up (依然成立) even after the scientists included other possible influences on health, such
as weight, family income and drug use. Study showed that such other things did not explain adult health as well as
teen friendships did. For those who wonder whether they should follow the crowd or not, now they have a

When 19-year-old Sophia Giorgi said she was thinking of volunteering to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation
(基金会), nobody understood what she was talking about. But Sophia knew just how important Make-A-Wish
could be because this special organization (组织) had helped to make a dream come true for one of her best friends.
We were interested in finding out more, so we went along to meet Sophia and listen to what she had to say.
Sophia told us that Make-A-Wish is a worldwide organization that started in the United States in 1980. “It’s a
charity (慈善机构) that helps children who have got very serious illnesses. Make-A-Wish helps children feel happy
even though they are sick, by making their wishes and dreams come true.” Sophia explained.
We asked Sophia how Make-A-Wish had first started. She said it had all begun with a very sick young boy
called Chris, who had been dreaming for a long time of becoming a policeman. Sophia said lots of people had
wanted to find a way to make Chris’s dream come true—so, with everybody’s help, Chris, only seven years old at
the time, had been a “policeman” for a day. “When people saw how happy Chris was when his dream came true,
they decided to try and help other sick children too, and that was the beginning of Make-A-Wish, Chris was the
first child that Make-A-Wish helped,” explained Sophia.
Sophia also told us the Foundation tries to give children and their families a special, happy time. A Make-A-
Wish volunteer visits the families and asks the children what they would wish for if they could have anything in the
world. Sophia said the volunteers were important because they were the ones who helped to make the wishes come
true. They do this either by providing things that are necessary, or by raising money or helping out in whatever way
they can.
