Trading Pumpkins
Tammy, an 11-year-old girl, lives on the Little Acres Farm with her family. In autumn, they usually make a
Haunted Hay Maze (千草迷宫) and sell tickets to the villagers. The only problem is that the farm doesn’t have very
good pumpkins. For some reason, they never grow properly.
One day, they heard the Taylor Farm was also planning a Haunted Hay Maze this year. “Tammy, I want you to
go over their farm and see what they are up to.” Dad said.
“I’ll come back with a full report!” Tammy replied.
When she got to the farm, Mr. Taylor was staring (凝视) at the hay, looking upset. In his hand was a bright
orange pumpkin.
“Hello, Mr. Taylor,” Tammy greeted. “I was just coming by to see your.” She stopped. “I thought maybe your
pumpkins were...” “More orange?” She thought for a while and said.
,
Mr. Taylor shook his head. “But it’s not easy to make a Haunted Hay Maze. Tammy why are you really
here?”
Tammy started to breathe heavily out of fear. And then, quite suddenly, she ran right at Mr. Taylor and
snatched (抢走) the pumpkin out of his hand! She rushed home as fast as possible.
“A pumpkin? How did you get it?” her father asked when she got home.

you would teach him how to make a Haunted Hay Maze.”
“But Dad.”
.

Have you ever been on a plane and felt that sudden bump (碰撞), causing your stomach to drop? That’s
turbulence, and it’s a normal part of air travel. Turbulence can be scary, but understanding what causes it and how to
微信:cs5311742016 主营各地名校期中期末真题卷及小初高全套教材教案讲义知识点总结微信:cs5311742016 主营各地名校期中期末真题卷及小初高全套教材教案讲义知识点总结
deal with it can help ease your fears.
Turbulence can be caused by three things: mountains, jet streams, and storms. Air forms waves when it meets
with mountains. These “mountain waves” can break up into many disorderly currents (气流), which we experience
as turbulence. Jet streams, fast moving currents high above the earth, can also cause turbulence. Storms are the
most common cause. The fast growth of storm clouds pushes air away, creating waves that can turn into turbulence.
Each of these can cause “clear air turbulence”, or CAT, the least noticeable type. It’s hard to predict, and it can
happen suddenly.
Part of the nervousness around turbulence is the fear of the aircraft failing. It’s a natural reaction, especially
when you’ve had the experience of watching a wing bend in a seemingly impossible way. “Everything on wing
bending a plane has been tested. In fact, a little wing bending during turbulence is a good thing, as it shows the
plane is able to deal with the stress,” explains Marilyn Smith, an engineer at Georgia Tech.
If you are a nervous flyer, there are a few ways to plan for and deal with turbulence during the flight.
“Turbulence is worse at the back of the plane and it’s usually the most serious in the mid-afternoon,” says
Heather Poole, a flight attendant for 21 years. “So, try to book a morning flight and sit at the front of the plane.”
“Keep your seatbelt fastened at all times,” Poole adds. She also suggests just talking to your flight crew (机组成员)
if you are feeling nervous, as they can check on you and offer support.
“The fear mostly comes from losing a sense of control,” Poole says. “If you learn more about how turbulence
happens and what you can do, you will feel better.”
25. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Turbulence is very common during an air travel.
B. It’s easy for people to notice “clear air turbulence”.
C. Wing bending in turbulence is a sign of the aircraft failing.
D. Jet streams cause turbulence because of the growth of clouds.
26. According to the passage, you can feel less scared of turbulence by _______.
A. keeping watching a wing bend
B. trying to take a morning flight if possible
C. asking other passengers for support
D. booking your seat at the back of the plane
27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Is It Necessary to Fear Turbulence?
B. Turbulence: Its Risk to Flight Safety
C. Is It Possible to Get Away from Turbulence?

D. Turbulence: Its Relation to Weather Conditions
Achieving a goal and achieving happiness are two different things. Dreams and goals are important because
they help us measure (衡量) progress—you don’t care if you’re getting closer to Rome unless you are trying to get
to Rome. But progress, not meeting a goal, is what brings true happiness.
In 2011, researchers studied the day-to-day well-being of 238 workers at seven companies. They found that
satisfaction is not from big wins, but from the progress in meaningful work. Other researchers have found that
progress always beats achievement when it comes to happiness. It seems that humans are often excited about
improvement. For example, my goal is to save $10,000, but what makes me happy is that I save more this week
than last week.
To work towards a big goal in the hope of getting happiness is sometimes, unexpectedly, to set yourself up for
unhappiness. Some researchers have argued that when a goal is a true end for progress, the sudden stop of moving
forward can lead to a feeling of emptiness (空虚). As a friend told me, “I always thought there would be no better
feeling than the day I saw I had a No.1 New York Times best seller. And when it finally happened, I felt nothing.”
Worse than feeling nothing, you might have a little depression (沮丧) in the days after a big achievement like
winning a prize.
One explanation for these problems has to do with dopamine (多巴胺), which gives us a sense of pleasure
when we expect a happy ending. Dopamine rises before you achieve a goal and falls afterward.
However, when we focus on the process (过程) and the progress we make, we find that our attitude towards
goals changes. We begin to see each step as a learning experience, and we learn to celebrate the small wins. This
shift leads to a more positive outlook on life and can finally lead to greater happiness.
By enjoying the process and celebrating the progress, we can feel a sense of satisfaction. So, next time you
find yourself focusing on the end goal, remember that true happiness lies in the progress you make along the way.
28. The example of saving money in Paragraph 2 is to show ________.
A. achieving a goal is what people expect
B. a good habit can bring more happiness
C. meaningful progress leads to satisfaction
D. the result is more important than the process
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How people get a sense of pleasure.
.
B What problems goal achieving can bring.
C. How people get away from emptiness.
D. What feelings making progress can produce.

30. The word “shift” in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.
A. goal
B. wish
C. change
D. search
31. What is the writer s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce what a meaningful life is like.
B. To explain why people fail to notice progress.
C. To advise people to work towards their dreams in life.
D. To call on people to value the process in going after goals.

Why Is Eating Fiber Important?
Fiber is not really a nutrient (养分), since it is never taken in by your body. But it plays some important roles in
your health.
What is fiber?
Fiber is something in plants that your body can’t digest (消化). There are two basic types of fiber: soluble (可
溶的) and insoluble. Soluble fiber may be broken down to form something good for our health. It can be found in
many fruits and vegetables, like strawberries and carrots. Insoluble fiber helps move waste through the digestive
tract. It is often in the peel of apples and pears, and vegetables. Health experts agree that it’s a good idea to eat about
30g fiber every day.
Why is fiber good for health?
A high-fiber diet helps to move the waste more quickly through the digestive tract, which may help to shorten
the time something bad stays. Fiber also feeds the good bacteria (细菌) in the digestive tract, stopping bad ones from
growing there. The good bacteria can also break down the fiber to provide energy to the bowel cells and help to keep
them healthy.

Fiber can also help keep a healthy weight. It takes in water and fills you up fast. It also slows down digestion
and makes the feelings of fullness last longer.
In addition, high-fiber food usually takes longer to eat, and the fiber stops the food from being quickly digested.
The faster a food is broken down during digestion, the more quickly the blood sugar level rises. So fiber helps to keep
healthy blood sugar levels.
