The batteries we normally use have two noticeable problems, both of which lie in the materials. Firstly,
lithium (锂), commonly used in batteries, is believed to be expensive and cause water and land pollution. Besides,
most batteries use a liquid electrolyte (液体电解质). These liquids are flammable, which means they can catch fire
easily.
Scientists from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are working hard to make new materials
for batteries, and they've got help from artificial intelligence (AI).
The PNNL scientists focused on solid (固体) electrolytes, trying to use less lithium in the meanwhile. They
began with more than 32 million possible materials. The AI program studied this list. “The first step was to find out
the ones that are stable (稳定的),” said Kandler Smith, an expert from the PNNL, “Many of the materials in the list
would not work in a real lab, because these materials are not stable.” Then AI started its job by studying the 32
million materials, and cut the list down to half a million at a speed that surprised everyone. The team then chose
other ways to limit the number of materials. Cost to make the material was one example. In the end, scientists were
left with 18 finalists. They studied these materials, and finally narrowed down to one new material. And they built a
working battery from it!
Smith was very impressed that it took AI just over 80 computer hours to fi nish the task. The same work would
have taken about 20 years if done through experiments in a lab. With solid electrolytes, the newly-built batteries are
hopefully more stable and much less flammable. Moreover, the new material has 70% less lithium than a normal
battery. Batteries made with this material could cost less in the future.
But one problem is that the newly-built batteries charge (充电) much more slowly, which scientists would
need to work on. Still, Smith believes it’s an excellent starting point. He is excited about the impact of using AI. It
has really sped up the work scientists could do. The same program could help scientists in hundreds of other fields.
