As a teenager, school was difficult for me. I had a kind of attention disorder, which means I couldn’t direct my
attention to what I was doing. So when everyone else in the class was centering their attention on tasks, I could not.
In my first reading class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all finished in 45 minutes. I
immediately put up my hand and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not
be able to finish the task.”
She looked down at me through her glasses, saying, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
With her encouragement, I tried. But I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis
Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he
invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? With thoughts running
through my head, I found myself deeply attracted in reading and writing. I completed the task in less than 40
minutes. I realized that I was not different from others. I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out
of his problem, why should I ever give up?
I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came
back to me the next day with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words, “See what you can do
when you keep trying?”
24. School was difficult for the writer because ________.
A. he didn’t like the teacher B. the tasks were too boring to him
C. he got a kind of attention disorder D. his classmates talked with him in class
25. Mrs. Smith’s words in Paragraph 3 show that ________.
A. she encouraged him B. she laughed at him C. she felt sorry for him D. she was pleased with
him
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Never stop reading. B. Never give up easily. C. How to be a great teacher. D. How to learn as a
blind.

Are we addicted to technology?
Technology has become a main part of our lives. It has changed our lives in many ways. In many ways, it
第5页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司makes life more convenient for us: we can send messages quickly by the internet, cook meals in a few minutes in a
microwave, and book train tickets online instead of walking to the station. However, in our increasingly
technology-driven world, have we become addicted(上瘾的) to technology?
Not too long ago, many children enjoyed reading a good book in their spare time. Nowadays, teens are more
likely to be seen playing video games or watching television. Some people even say they can’t go without watching
their favourite TV programme—which is a bit extreme(偏激的)!
Similarly, sending letters has become a thing of the past. It has been replaced by e-mail, instant messaging and
social media. I think this is a huge shame; for me, there’s nothing better than receiving a letter in the post. It shows
someone has taken the time to sit down and write something; this is much more personal than a conversation
online. For some people— especially the older generation—new methods of communication aren’t so easy to use. I
regularly send letters and postcards to my grandma to keep her updated with my life in France; I also send them to
my boyfriend and sister.
The presence of social media has, in some respects, turned us into anti-social beings. Instead of meeting up
with friends and seeing them face-to-face, we now spend a lot of time communicating online. Although online
communication has its advantages—notably, enabling us to keep in touch with loved ones in different countries—
we shouldn’t forget the value of real-life human interaction. It is, after all, in our nature to socialise with others!
Actually, I spend a lot of time using technology. I rely on the internet and my laptop to plan lessons for my
classes. I use wifi on my phone to send messages via apps such as Viber and Snapchat. That said, when I’m on
holiday it is nice to switch it all off and have a break. Taking a break from technology is liberating.
27. What does the writer mainly tell us in writing the second paragraph?
A. Fewer children enjoy reading books now.
B. What changes children’s reading habit.
C. How addicted some teens become to technology nowadays.
D. More and more teens like amusing themselves by technology.
28. From the passage we can know that ________.
A. the writer prefers letters to e-mails
.
B e-mails will take place of letters
C. technology has little influence on our lives
D. the writer is not ready to use technology
29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage us to keep in touch with loved ones face-to-face.
第6页/共10页

C. To advise us to free us from technology sometimes.
D. To expect us to interact a lot with others in society.

It happens every night—bedtime. But what if you’re not sleepy? Should you still go to bed if you are just
going to lie there with your eyes wide open? It’s a problem that has been around as long as there are people trying
to sleep.
You might be excited by something you did in the day. You might be nervous about what you’re going to do
the next day. Maybe you don’t like sleeping alone in your room. Maybe you have frightening(吓人的)dreams.
All of these are possible reasons for your sleeping problem. However, there are some steps you can take to help you
solve it.
One thing that can help is talking to a parent or another trusted adult about what you’re worrying about at
bedtime. For example, if you’re nervous about taking a test, or upset about being teased(被嘲弄)at school, it can
really help to tell somebody. Knowing that somebody has heard you can help ease your mind so that you can have a
good rest.
Sleeping in a comfortable bed in a quiet and cool room is a good choice. If there’s anything in your room that
makes you feel uneasy or anxious at night, like a picture that looks strange in the dark, or a noisy faucet(水龙
头)in the bathroom, be sure to ask your parents to move or fix it. Make sure electronics, such as mobile phones or
iPads, are kept away from your bed. They can keep you excited, making it harder for you to fall asleep.
If you are usually restless around bedtime, doing certain things to relax beforehand may help you fall asleep.
Try to take more time to wind down by taking a warm bath, or listening to a bedtime story at least 30 minutes
before you go to sleep. It also helps to follow a bedtime routine and go to sleep at the same time every night. As a
result, your body will get the message that it’s almost time to sleep. Your body will know to start feeling tired.
In order to find the right solution for you, it’s important that you understand what exactly is keeping you up at
night. Getting a good night’s sleep is worth the time and effort of finding the right solution to your sleeping
problem.
30. Paragraph 2 is mainly about ________.
A. why people have frightening dreams at night
B. why daytime activities influence people’s sleep
C. what can help people solve the sleeping problem
D. what may make it difficult for people to fall asleep
31. If you want to feel less nervous about a test and have a good sleep ________.

C. you should sleep in a quiet and cool room D. you can listen to some stories before bedtime
32. What does the phrase “wind down” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Keep clean. B. Get relaxed. C. Stay awake. D. Feel excited.
33. To get a good sleep, what does the writer advise you to do first?
A. To go to bed at a certain time every night.
B. To do something to make you tired in the day.
C. To stay away from electronics before going to bed.
D. To know the exact reason why you stay awake at night.

330 million nature lovers from all over the world visited US national parks in 2018. This summer, visitors will
have a new park to explore. Indiana Dunes National Park started on February 15, 2019. Just 50 miles from Chicago,
the park is doable as a day trip or a multi-day adventure.
Located (位于) in northwestern Indiana along the shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana Dunes is the first national
park in this state. The park is already Indiana's most-visited site, with about 3.5 million visitors each year. Here's
what to know before you visit.
The park's most impressive features (特点) are its towering sand dunes. Formed by glacial melt (冰川融化),
the park's namesake dunes can reach heights of almost 200 feet. Strong winds blowing off Michigan continually
shape and change the park's 15 miles of shoreline, ensuring a slightly different experience each time you visit.
The warm months are the best time to take full advantage of the park's beach. But the park is worth visiting in
any season. You can do different activities in different seasons. To see beautiful fall leaves, plan your visit in
autumn. Or explore the park in winter and enjoy far fewer crowds. If you visit in spring, just enjoy your walk for
beautiful flowers.
A 3.5-mile path showing the best the park has to offer. The most famous dune is Mount Baldy, and on certain
days you can actually climb to the top of this sand dune to enjoy open views of the surrounding landscape (风景).
Other outdoor activities at Indiana Dunes National Park include biking, boating, and fishing. Of course, swimming
in Lake Michigan is one of the most beloved activities, but it's important to be mindful of changing water
conditions. Like an ocean, Lake Michigan can be calm one minute and dangerous the next.
The park's Dunewood Campground has 66 campsites and is equipped with restrooms and showers. It is first-
come, first-served, and the fee is $25 per night. If you don't want to camp, several other accommodations (住宿)
around Indiana Dunes don't require sleeping in a tent. Everything from bed and breakfasts to hotels is available.

学科网(北京)股份有限公司If you're flying to the Midwest, the airports nearest to Indiana Dunes are South Bend International in South
Bend, about 45 miles away, and both Midway and O'Hare in Chicago. From Indianapolis, the drive is about 2.5
hours. The park's main gate is just off I-94 and is easily accessed from the Indiana Toll Road. Take the exit for
IN-49 and you will pass right by the visitor center where you can park, head in to get a map, and plan the day. The
park fee is just $6 per car and $80 for a season pass.
