Jeremiah’s Mistake
Jeremiah hurried into the kitchen and washed his hands. He had exactly one hour until his father got home. He
wasn’t used to starting dinner this early. On his nights to cook, Jeremiah generally got dinner ready in fifteen

CWhen you’re having a hard time with something, it’s natural to turn to others for help. Getting help sounds
simple, but it’s not always easy to do. Sometimes certain beliefs or ways of thinking can make it hard to ask for
help. Here are some kinds of attitudes that can stand in the way and ideas on how to get past them.
Some people believe that needing help is a sign of weakness. Actually, it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
You know what you need and you shouldn’t be afraid to reach out for it. Once a boy told me he wanted to ask his
coach how to improve his basketball skills, but he was afraid that his coach might think he shouldn’t be on the
team. In fact, when he asked his coach for help, his coach thought he was practicing hard.
Some other people think they don’t deserve(应该得到) help or support. Everyone needs help now and then.
Accepting help can strengthen friendships and relationships. Everyone feels good when they can support a friend.
For example, if you want to find out how Katy solves problems with her parents, you should ask Katy if she has
time to talk and tell her how important her viewpoint is, instead of worrying that Katy is too busy to help you.
When you ask for help, choose someone who listens and cares, not someone who judges or criticizes you. If you
get refused, it's not because of you, but the other person. So tell yourself: If Katy says no, she might not be ready to
talk about her own experiences.
Another wrong attitude is waiting for someone else to make the first move. It’s not always easy for other

This high school term was supposed to be easier. That is the thought in my mind —after all, this is the first term
that I’m taking less than 20 credits（学分）, and I’m enjoying all of my classes. However, this term has felt the most
difficult and my grades are much worse than they were when I was taking two more classes.
I couldn’t blame（怪罪） it on the fact that I’ve been busy working in several school clubs and practicing for

work I do is just hard.
I’m learning that it’s okay not l0 be the best at the work that you do. When you’re used to being naturally good,
it’s hard to realize that throwing the same amount of effort at something that is more difficult won’t justautomatically（自动地） work. However, we shouldn’t feel bad about that. Even though we’re here for learning,
there are so many things to spend our time on. I think of the things I want as all having a price, and the amount that
I would like to pay at any given time changes, as does the price. It’s not to say that you should stop working hard, but
it’s good to keep in mind that sometimes the price just might be too high for you at a given time.
You don’t have to do everything perfectly, even if it looks easy, and you’re allowed to deal with knowledge that
just doesn’t make sense to you. This is the time to learn how to keep on keeping on. We will be the best of ourselves
once we learn that being our best isn’t a precondition to learning.

Cloud Forests
In the Americas, Asia, and Africa, there's a special kind of forest—the cloud forest. Cloud forests are usually
found from 500 meters to 4,000 meters above sea level in the clouds on the slopes （斜坡）of mountains. They
experience rainfall, but they also get water straight from the air. The water is unpolluted, and moves through the
ground into streams and then rivers.
Cloud forests are very important to both people who live nearby and the animals and plants living there. They
provide water to nearby villages and cities. People drink the water, use it for cooking, and irrigate （灌溉） their
farm fields with it. In Kenya, people even use water from cloud forests to produce electricity. Although cloud
forests only make up 2.5 percent of the world's rainforests, they are also home to many animals and plants.
Unfortunately, cloud forests now face many problems. Local poor people clear the cloud forests. They cut
down trees to grow food and use the wood to heat their homes and cook. Building roads also badly harms the cloud
forests. Once cloud forests are cleared, the cloud cover, which is important and necessary to the growth of these
forests, goes away. Another bigger worry is that the temperature increases gradually. If world temperatures rise,
cloud forests will have to move up to a higher place where the temperatures are cooler. But some cloud forests on
mountain tops with nowhere to climb will die out.
Scientists fear we might lose cloud forests, along with the water and other services they provide. Somegovernments have taken actions to protect cloud forests. They make laws against cutting down trees in the cloud
forests. They provide the local people with other ways to get food and energy. They also educate the local people
on how cloud forests provide fresh water and what will happen when they are cleared.
Cloud forests are too valuable to lose. We must save them—plus the animals and plants they support—before
