It turns out that a scientist can see the future by watching four-year-olds with a sweet. The researcher invites
the children into a simple room. “You can have this sweet right now,” he says. “But if you wait while I go out for a
few minutes, you can have two sweets when I get back.” And then he leaves.
Some children eat the sweet the moment he’s out the door. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But
others make up their mind to wait. They cover their eyes, they put their heads down, they sing to themselves, they
try to play games or even fall asleep. When the researcher returns, he gives these children their sweets. And then,
science waits for them to grow up.By the time the children reach high school, something unusual has happened. A survey of the children’s
parents and teachers found that those who as four-year-olds were strong-minded enough to hold out for the second
sweet generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable teenagers. The children who
gave in to temptation (诱惑) early on were more likely to be lonely and easily upset.
When we think of excellence, we see Einstein — deep-eyed, woolly-haired, a thinking machine. High
achievers, we imagine, were born for greatness. But then you have to wonder why, over time, natural talent seems
to flower in some, yet disappear in others. This is where the sweets come in. The ability to put off the pleasure of
meeting needs is a master skill, a victory of the reasoning brain over the impulsive (冲动的) one. It is a sign, in
short, of emotional intelligence. And it doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
In his book Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman argues that brain power as measured by IQ actually
matters less than qualities of mind like understanding one’s own feelings, empathy (同情) — being sensitive to
other people’s feeling — and the ability to manage your own emotions. EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What
researchers are trying to understand is how they work to improve each other. Among the ingredients (因素) for
success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%: the rest depends on everything from luck,
to social class ... and emotional intelligence. In the business world, according to personal executives (主管) , IQ
gets you a job, but EQ gets you a higher position.
27. Some children get two sweets in the research because they ________.
A. have a strong mind B. like eating sweets
C. play games together D. sing to themselves
28. Which of the following doesn’t belong to EQ according to the passage?
A. Being able to get a job. B. Understanding one’s own feelings.
C. Being able to control one’s emotions. D. Understanding the feelings of others.
29. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To introduce the book called Emotional Intelligence.
B. To explain the importance of emotional intelligence.
C. To share some ways of developing emotional intelligence.
D. To share some examples of improving emotional intelligence.
D
Talking to yourself doesn't mean you're crazy. It's probably that you’re talking to yourself throughout the day
whether you're aware of it or not like. “I'm going to be late!” If you say such sentences, you're on the right side of
science-there are actually lots of benefits of talking to yourself.
It's confirmed that expressing some inner thoughts out loud can actually help you better master the present andfuture and is something we should all start doing.Lisa Ferentz, a clinical social worker and psychotherapist,
employs this practice most often when it comes to helping her patients develop a positive outlook about themselves
and the day ahead. There's nothing more important than the way we talk to ourselves because that inner monologue
(独白) informs all our thoughts, emotional states and behavioral choices,” she says.If you're always critical,
judgmental, or facing the day with a negative attitude, you're making it pretty hard for yourself to see positivity.
A good way to adopt a healthy mental state is to come up with something that you're grateful for, your own
strengths, and positive affirmations to cheer yourself up; then stand in front of a mirror and say those things out
loud.If you feel silly, don' t give up.Once you practice it from a positive place, you discover it's quite easy to do.It
guides our life whether we're aware of it or not In fact, one study from the University of Lethbridge found that
students who were taught how to engage in positive self-talk were able to change their perspectives, attitudes and
reactions.Sure enough, talking to yourself is one of the signs you're actually smarter than you realize.
,
That doesn't mean you can't speak out your frustrations.Just like there's a place for positive self-talk
there's also a place for negative if you do it the right way."There s definitely a value to understanding what you're
feeling whether it's positive or negative, says Ferentz.Bringing the negative thing you're thinking and feeling to the
surface then gives you the opportunity to re-evaluate it."Once you voice what's worrying you, try asking yourself if
it's useful to keep holding on to those thoughts or if it's something you can let go of.
So next time you hold a little two-way conversation with yourself, don't worry. It's perfectly OK.In fact,
science approves of it!
30. Ferentz often asks her patients to__________.
A. share their thoughts with others. B. talk about something critical.
C. develop a positive outlook. D. choose the way they talk.
31. “positive affirmations” mentioned in Paragraph 3 are probably “__________”.
A. natural behaviors B. encouraging words C. strong belief D. lasting support
32. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The types of self-talks. B. The ways to talk to yourself.
C. The influence of negative thoughts. D. The benefit of speaking out negative thoughts.
33. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Amazed-Talking to Yourself Is Actually a Different Thing
B. Approved-Sharing Your Unhappiness Is Truly a Helpful Thing
C. Encouraged-Voicing Your Opinions Is Really a Courageous Thing
D. Confirmed--Having Conversations with Yourself Is Indeed a Good Thing
