I stood there listening to my father shout at top of his voice. The look on his face said that one of us had
done something ___13___.
“Which one of you did this?”
We all looked down at the step. There was child’s handwriting in chalk there. I was filled with a lot of fear. I
hoped no one could see it. Would he guess it was me? I was so worried. When he asked me, I lied, “Not me,
Dad.”
The others denied (否认) it as well. Of course, we all knew that one of us ___14___ have done it. But as
the youngest and smallest of the three, I just couldn’t find the courage to tell the truth.
To ___15___ who had written on the step, Father gave us each a piece of paper and a pencil. “I want each

外出) for a month.
We didn’t talk about that day for many years. Not until we were all older and I knew it was ___20___ to

How to keep fit
Running
Running will help you lose weight faster than any other activity. It also strengthens (加强) your heart,
lungs, and leg muscles (肌肉). But it can hurt your joints (关节). If you feel ache in your knees (膝盖), you
need to stop and choose a different activity.
Walking
Walking puts less stress (压力) on the body than running. But you need to get your heart beating faster to
see results. This means you’ll need to walk fast. Walking can also help you lose weight.
Swimming
Swimming is a great way to strengthen different parts of your body. It is also a good way to help lose
weight. The water in a swimming pool is cooler than our body temperature. The body naturally protects itself
from the cold by burning fat.
Cycling
Riding a bicycle will help you lose weight and work leg muscles. But be careful! If you live in the city, you
should stay on bike path and away from traffic.

I am off on a trip on my own. Yes ! Alone! I can't wait to get going to Europe to see some cities I really want to
visit. It is great because I can choose what I want to do in each city. I am going to travel by train on the Eurorail.
The train trip was fast and the views of the countryside were amazing. Now 1 am in Salzburg, Austria. The quiet
hills of Austria are a great place to relax. The movie The Sound of Music was filmed around this area. Mozart, the

The train ride to Amsterdam was a long one. It gave me time to write some postcards to send back home.
Amsterdam is a fun city, full of friendly locals and many tourists. I spent the whole day visiting the art museums
here. The museum about the famous Dutch artist Van Gogh is filled with history and beautiful art. I took a boat ride
and saw local people in traditional dress. I even got to taste some delicious Dutch cheese.
Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the safest places in the world. I spent a busy and nice day at the Tivoli

What might the future be like? Here are some predictions: things to come, things to go.
The last few days of every year in big cities in China, when everyone returns home, have been headaches
for millions of Chinese. More than 2 billion people travel at the same time, making getting travel tickets and the
journey difficult. But in a few years, Spring Festival travel may not be a problem at all. China plans to build more

Social Bond of Animals
第5页/共10页
学科网(北京)股份有限公司Friendship is an important part of human life. Friends can share our joys and our hardships. We aren’t alone.
Many different animals also make friends.
Recently a British research team finished an eight-year study of Indo-Pacific dolphins off the coast of
,
Western Australia. These dolphins can use different tools to search for food. The researchers found that these
dolphins are more willing to hang out with partners that like the same tool. Other factors, like family closeness or
sex, have no influence on this relationship.
“It suggests that dolphins form social bonds (纽带)based on shared interests,w UK biologist Simon Allen
told Science Daily. "Using different tools is time-consuming (耗时间的)” for dolphins to cooperate.
Apart from dolphins, elephants, horses and bats are also known to form friendships. Are friendships only
limited to the same species? Of course not, The
Atlantic reported in 2015, a goat Timur was originally left in the tiger Amur's enclosure (围场)as a meal. But
instead of eating Timur, Amur likes to play with it and gets jealous when others are close to his friend.
The Atlantic said it’s not unusual among captive (圈禁的)animals. That's because in captivity, animals
don’t need to spend much time and energy marking their territory (领地)or looking for mates the way they
would in the wild. They are actually more likely to feel bored. " In this particular situation, the animal's motivation
to engage (参与)socially and playfully may be higher than eating. n
More interestingly, animals not only make friends but also try to keep lasting friendships. Take bats for
example. In 2011, scientists found bats prefer to hang out with a few certain friends, keeping loose ties to the rest of
their group.
Humans aren't so different. “We do not work, play and live together with the same friends all the time,"
Swiss zoologist Gerald Kerth explained. “ But nevertheless, we are able to maintain long-term relationships …
despite our often highly dynamic (动态的)social lives."
.
31 What did the recent British research find about dolphins?
A. They form a group to look for food together.
B. They form friendships based on family closeness.
C. They are likely to make friends based on interests.
D. They are better at building friendships than other animals.
32. What can we infer from Gerald Kerth’s words?
A. Animals like to hang out with different friends.
B. Animals might feel bored with friends of the same species.
C. Humans are better at keeping long-term bonds than animals.
D. Humans and animals make and keep friendships in similar ways.

B. The importance of friendship for animals.
C. How to build strong ties with your friends.

It’s true that you can learn new words when you read or listen, but you should also study new words
seriously. Here are a few things I do.
Make flashcards. I find this is really the best way to learn new words. Make some small cards and write the
words on one side and either the words in your language or the meaning in easy English on the other side and test
,
yourself. To make this work you have to review as often as possible.
Make sentences with the new words. This is great if you can ask someone to check them. It is also great to
make up crazy sentences. In that way you won’t forget them! I also collect example sentences of the words I’m
trying to learn. If I see the word from a book, I write down the sentence.
Make up a mnemonic (助记符号). A mnemonic is a way to remember something, like a short story.
For example, if I want to remember the Japanese word “yukkuri” (which means “slowly”), I could think
about the English words “you” and “curry”, and maybe imagine someone eating a plate of curry very, very slowly!
Put signs with English words on things in your house. For example, I put the word “kitchen” on the
kitchen door. The problem is that it works for a while and then you get used to the words and forget to read them!
