did it.
“Emma, you’re such a smart girl, but you’re always daydreaming. I may have to talk with your parents, ”Mrs.
James said. “Now, class, clear your desks. Let’s welcome our guest, Doctor Landon. He is a vet and he came here
today as part of our Career Explorations(职业探索)program.”
Doctor Landon talked about how important grades were and how he tried hard with math when he was a kid.
But Emma didn’t listen carefully until a word caught her attention. Horse.
“On most days of a week, I travel across the county to take care of horses. It is a lot of work, but I love it.
Emma’s mouth fell open. “What a life that is, she thought. At that moment, Emma could see her future. She
was going to be a vet and take care of horses too!
After school, Emma made new plans. She would spend an hour studying math before riding Star. She also
decided to spend half an hour every night studying science even if she didn’t have any homework. Doctor Landon
said those were important subjects to study if you wanted to be a vet.
When Emma walked into the house, she told her parents about her new plans. They were both surprised. “I
had a talk with her last week. I told her she needed to work harder if she wanted to get into a good college. I guess
she is taking my advice, ”her dad said to her mom.
Emma smiled. She didn’t remember what her dad said. Maybe she would tell them about her dream tomorrow.

According to a new report, about 18% of China’s Internet users are under 19 years old. And nearly 1/4 of them
are students. While benefiting (受益) a lot from the Internet, such as free lessons and communication, teenagers often
face dangers and risks. To better protect them, the Chinese government last year started a special system which has
come to be known as the “Teenager Mode (模式).” Many live online video platforms (平台) are now using it, but
微信:cs5311742016 主营各地名校期中期末真题卷及小初高全套教材教案讲义知识点总结微信:cs5311742016 主营各地名校期中期末真题卷及小初高全套教材教案讲义知识点总结
how good is it?
“Teenager Mode” seems to be a firewall to protect teenage Internet users from overuse. Platforms have their
own ways to do that, such as time limits (限制) and passwords. They can also prohibit giving money, recharging (续费)
and so on.
Although there are some advantages, “Teenager Mode” still has its problems. For example, many parents say
that their children can still see something unsuitable (不适合的) on some platforms although they use “Teenager
Mode”. And if teenagers get hold of the full password, they can enter and exit whenever they like.
Experts (专家) say the system is still very new and it takes time and energy to improve it. “Teenager Mode’doesn’t
have the same standard (标准) yet. For platforms, they should work hard to truly meet the requirements of the
的
regulatory authorities (管理当局 要求),” said Wang Sixin, the president of Beijing Net Law Society.
Others say “Teenager Mode” doesn’t really limit the time teenagers spend online. They can simply go from one
app or platform to another till they use up the time limit on each. To improve it, first of all, the time spent on each
app or platform needs to be shared. Second, in order to help parents control (控制) their children’s time spent online,
the app or platform can warn the parents.
In all, the system is an important first step to protect young people from the dangers and risks of the Internet,
but people need to do more to improve it.
35. According to the passage, the government started the “Teenager Mode” to ________.
A. stop teenagers from overusing the Internet
.
B show teenagers the benefits of the Internet
C. keep teenagers far away from their computers
D. protect teenagers from the dangers in their schools
36. The word “prohibit” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A. offer B. allow C. change D. stop
37. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To tell teenagers not to use the Internet.
B. To point out the disadvantages of the Internet.
C. To encourage parents to use the “Teenager Mode”.
D. To discuss the effects (效用) of the “Teenager Mode”.

Talking to yourself isn’t just for humans—it’s for robots too.
Italian researchers have developed a robot that can speak to itself, which enables users to hear its thought
process (思考过程) and know how the robot make decisions.
“If you were able to hear what the robots are thinking, the robots might be more trustworthy (可信赖的),” one
of the researchers Antonio Chella says. “The robots will be easier to understand for people who aren’t engineers. In
other words, we can communicate and work with the robots better.”
People talk to themselves when looking for clarity and moral (清晰的思维及道德方面的) guidance, and it
helps in the decision-making process. The researchers set out to see how this could influence (影响) robots, so they
developed one called Pepper, and they trained it to set a table. They then gave it the ability to say, in simple
English, what it was “thinking” when completing a job.
After studying the robot, the researchers found that Pepper was better at solving dilemmas (进退两难的困境)
when talking to itself. One experiment (实验) saw a user ask Pepper to break table setting rules by putting a fork in
the wrong place, which led to the robot asking itself several self-directed questions. It then decided that the user
might be wrong, so it made sure the user didn’t give the wrong order before it went on talking to itself: “Emm, this
situation is difficult to me. I would never break the rules, but I can’t make him unhappy either, so I’m doing what
he wants,” Pepper said while putting the fork in the wrong place. The user can understand Pepper’s thoughts as it
uses its inner voice to solve a dilemma, which the researchers say could lead to human-robot trust.
Comparing Pepper’s performance (表现) with and without inner speech, Chella discovered that the robot
worked faster with inner speech, which means when it was talking to itself. “People were very surprised by the
robot’s ability,” Chella says. “The research makes the robot different from other machines because it has the ability
to reason, to think. Inner speech could be useful in all the situations where we trust the computer or a robot for
evaluation of a situation.”
Although hearing the inner voice of robots enriches the human-robot interaction, some people might find it
inefficient because the robot spends more time completing jobs when it talks to itself. The robot’s inner speech is
also just the knowledge that researchers gave it. Still, Chella says their research lays the groundwork for more
research into how self-dialogue can help robots pay attention, plan and learn.
38. According to the passage, Pepper can _______.
A. talk to itself B. read users’ minds C. teach table setting rules D. start a training task

39. What can we learn from the research?
A. Inner speech helps the robot finish tasks better.
B. The research can help people understand robots’ actions.
C. The Italian researchers created a new language for robots.
D. The robot helped study people’s decision-making process.
40. What does the underlined word “inefficient” mean?
A. Not interesting. B. Not important. C. Not useful. D. Not good or enough.
41. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Robots: Learn to Learn
B. Robots: Think Out Loud
C. Robots: Make Better Speeches
D. Robots: Always Trust Humans

Even the most confident performers (表演者) can have stage fright (怯场). Stage fright is common for everyone
from Broadway actors to experienced speakers. If you have stage fright, then you may start to feel nervous, shaky, or
even afraid when you think of performing in front of a group of people. But don’t worry—you can do with your stage
fright by training your body and mind to relax and trying a few tips.
1.Fake (假装) confidence. Just act like the coolest person in the world. Walk with your head high and a big smile
on your face, and don’t tell anyone how afraid you are. Keep this posture (姿势) when you get on the stage and you’ll
surely start to feel confident.
2.Create a ritual (仪式). Come up with a good ritual for the day of your performance. This could be a five-
,
kilometer jog on the morning of your performance the same “last meal” before your performance, or even singing
a certain song in the shower or putting on your lucky socks. Do whatever you have to do to lead yourself toward
success. A lucky charm (幸运物) is also a great part of a ritual. It could be a necklace that’s important to you, or a
toy like a teddy bear that cheers you on from your dressing room.
3.Think positively (积极地). Think about all of the possible amazing results of your presentation or performance
instead of everything that could go wrong. Fight every negative thought with five positive ones. Keep a small card
with encouraging words in your pocket, or think about the benefits that the performance can bring you.
4.Get advice from an experienced performer. If you have friends who are good at performing, ask for their
advice. You may learn some new tips and feel more comfortable to learn the fact that everyone gets stage fright, no
matter how confident he or she may appear on stage.

A
Many studies have shown the learning-by-teaching effect. Students who spend time teaching what they’ve
learned show better understanding and ability to remember knowledge than students who simply spend the same
time re-studying. But why does teaching help?
Researchers led by Aloysius Wei Lun Koh did a study to test their idea that teaching improves the teacher’s
learning because it forces the teacher to retrieve(检索)what they’ve learned. In other words, they believe that
bringing to mind what we’ve learned leads to deeper and longer-lasting acquisition(获得)of that information
than spending more time re-studying.
The researchers asked 124 students to spend ten minutes studying a text with numbers on a topic which is
completely new to them. They told the students they could take notes while studying, but would teach the material
afterwards without notes. After studying the text, the students were divided into four groups. In one group the
students spent five minutes delivering a lesson on the study material without notes. The other groups either spent
the same time completing arithmetic(算术)problems, teaching with a script(讲稿)or writing down all they
could remember from the text-a form of retrieval practice. A week later, all the students returned to the lab for a
surprise test of their knowledge and understanding of the text.
The important finding is that the teaching-without-notes group and the retrieval-practice group outperformed
the group that completed arithmetic problems and the group that taught with a script. In fact, the performance of the
teaching-without-notes group and the retrieval-practice group was comparable.
The researchers said the result shows that the benefits of the learning-by-teaching method are caused by
retrieval practice; that is, the learning-by-teaching method works only when the teaching involves retrieving the
taught materials.
The new findings have a practical suggestion for how the learning-by-teaching method is used in education. In
order to make sure that students learn and remember an educational material, they should internalize(内化)the
material before presenting it to others, rather than depend on notes during the presentation process.
53. Why did the researchers do the study?
A. To compare different methods of learning.
B. To test whether teaching can improve learning.

54. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.

55. What can we learn from the study?
A. Teaching with a script is the best way of learning.

C. Solving arithmetic problems is harder than doing other tasks.
D. Presenting with notes can help students remember a material.

The Father, His Son and Their Donkey
Narrator 1: One bright day in a long ago springtime, a farmer and his son set off for the marketplace. They felt very
happy to be together and they walked along slowly, talking and enjoying the sunshine. Their donkey followed
behind them happily as they made their way over the long and dusty road to town.
Farmer: It’s a wonderful day to be out and about in the world, don’t you think?
Son: Surely I do, Father. I can’t wait to get to the marketplace. I want to buy a jam cake and a new slingshot (弹弓).
Farmer: And I hope to get some fat red hens and a bag of good yellow corn to plant.
Narrator 2: And so the farmer and his son continued their journey excitedly, thinking good thoughts about the day
ahead. The donkey walked along behind them.
Narrator 1: After a while they came upon an old woman, working in her garden by the roadside.
Farmer: (cheerfully) Good day, madam.
Old Woman: (with an angry voice) I will not wish you a good day, sir.
Farmer: (confused) And why not? What have I done to you?
Old Woman: It is not what you have done to me, sir, but what you have done to that child of yours. How dare you
make him walk with heavy steps through the dust (尘土) while that donkey prances along without a care in the
world? You should be ashamed (羞愧的) of yourself, making the poor boy walk in this heat.
Farmer: (nervously) Why, yes, I see what you mean. I wonder that I did not think of it before. Here, son, climb right

Traveler 2: What a good-for-nothing boy he must be!
Narrator 2: Hearing their words, the boy jumped right down into the road.
Son: Father, you must ride. I don’t mind walking.
Farmer: (doubtfully) I guess you are right. Thank you, son.
Narrator 1: So with the father riding the donkey, and the boy walking along beside, the three continued their

does one walk when both of you could ride?
Narrator 1: The farmer and his son were both feeling a bit bewildered (困惑的) by this time, and only wished to be
left alone, so they tried to ignore (不理会) the shopkeeper. This made the shopkeeper very angry, and he ran into
the street.
Shopkeeper: Can’t you hear me, you great selfish fool? Let your son ride with you. That donkey is a fine strong
animal. It won’t hurt him a bit!
Narrator 2: The farmer was sad hearing the shopkeeper’s angry words, so he called to his son.
Farmer: Come, Son. Jump up behind me. We both can ride the rest of the way.
Narrator 2: The boy climbed up on the patient donkey behind his father, and the three continued on their journey.
Narrator 1: Very soon, they passed a group of townspeople, who began to laugh and shout at them.
Townspeople: What cruel (残忍的) people you are! Are you trying to break that poor donkey’s back? Shame on
you!
Narrator 2: The farmer and his son jumped quickly down off the donkey’s back and looked at each other. They did
not know what to do.
Townspeople: The donkey has carried you for miles. Why don’t you try carrying him for a change? (laughing)
Farmer: (with frustration) All right, all right! If it will make you happy we will carry the donkey!
Son: But Father, how will we do it? He will not like it. He will surely kick us! And he is far too heavy.
Farmer: We only need a stout pole and some rope. We can lash the donkey’s feet to the pole. We can each lift one
end of the pole and carry our donkey to the marketplace. We have only a short way to go now.
Son: (doubtfully) It might work.
Townspeople: Go find a stout pole. And bring some rope. Hurry!

Narrator 1: The townspeople rushed to their homes and quickly found a strong pole and some rope. They stood by
and watched as the farmer and his son tried to tie(系) the donkey’s feet to the pole.
Narrator 2: This was not an easy thing to do. No one had asked the donkey about the plan, and he clearly wanted no
part of it. He kicked and bucked and brayed. But at last he was tied fast to the pole.
Narrator 1: The farmer took one end of the heavy pole and lifted it to his shoulder. His son did likewise (同样的).
With staggering steps, they continued on their journey.
Narrator 2: After a few minutes, they came to a bridge over a river. The water gushed noisily under the bridge. The
sound made the poor donkey afraid, who was feeling rather sick from traveling in this upside-down way.
Narrator 1: The donkey began to kick, trying to free himself. Suddenly, the ropes broke and the poor donkey went
flying over the side of the bridge and into the rushing water below.
Narrator 2: The farmer and his son ran down to the bank of the river. But there was nothing they could do. The
water was fast and deep, and the donkey quickly sank (下沉). They couldn’t see it very soon.
Townspeople: Look what has happened! Look what you have done!
Farmer: (Sadly) Oh no! We have lost our donkey. This is awful!
Son: (crying) Our poor donkey has died. It is all our fault (错误).
Farmer: You are right. We made a mistake.
Narrator 1: And so the farmer and his son turned sadly toward their home, having learned a painful lesson.
