Tom looked out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road. The rain beatdown continuously and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car. Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked down at his thin, broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair start to wash over him. Suddenly, a loud noise shook him out of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump down the road. “Great,” he thought, “a flat tyre.” With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to a stop, resting his head on the steering wheel, defeated! After a few seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the blackness. When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home?” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre andI need help.” “Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returned with an old man. The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him. Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are paralyzed.” The words came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that he needed help from this weak old man in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply nodded. The old man and the little girl concentrated on their work and the rain was soaking them. Once again, Tom couldn’t help but feel he was useless. Soon the old man stepped to the window. “You’re all set,” he said. Tom handed some money to the old man, but he made no move to take it. Finally, the young girls aid, “Grandfather is blind.” Tom did not know what to say. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ Inspired by the chance encounter, Tom started to see everything differently. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ 【答案】 Tom did not know what to say. He just gestured towards the girl and the old man helplessly as he stumbled through an explanation that he would like to pay them for their help. The grandfather waved a hand and said, “There is no need. Just be careful about getting home and continue the chain of kindness.” Tom got back on to the road. The rain was now only a light mist, revealing the road ahead. A she drove through the night, he found himself looking forward to the journey ahead. Inspired by the chance encounter, Tom started to see everything differently. He contacted his doctor the next day to see if he could do something to increase his mobility. Later, he pursued his long-lost dream of becoming a teacher and reconnected with his family. Perhaps Tom was disabled in one way, but he decided that he would not let this define who he was or what he could accomplish. Most importantly, he began to look forward to each new day and view it as an opportunity to help others so that he could continue the chain of kindness.【导语】文章以人物为线索展开,讲述一天夜里双腿残疾的Tom独自一人驾车行驶在倾盆大雨之中,突然 他发现他的车子爆胎了。 词类激活 行为类 ①发现:find/feel/realize ②联系:contact/get in touch with ③决定:decide/determine/make up one’s mind 情绪类 ①善良:kindness/goodness ②无助地:helplessly/hopelessly 【点睛】[高分句型1]A she drove through the night, he found himself looking forward to the journey ahead.(运 用了as引导的时间状语从句) [高分句型2]He contacted his doctor the next day to see if he could do something to increase his mobility.(运用 了if引导的宾语从句) [高分句型3]Most importantly, he began to look forward to each new day and view it as an opportunity to help others so that he could continue the chain of kindness.(运用了so that引导的目的状语从句) 2.(2023·福建厦门·统考三模) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It was the longest heat wave anyone could remember, and Sebastian couldn’t wait to cool off at the beach with his dad. Before heading out of town, they stopped at the library and dropped off a few books. Sebastian noticed a crew working on the library roof. He asked Dad what they were doing. Dad explained that they were repairing the roof, a difficult job he had done himself for a few years. It was then that an idea flashed into Sebastian’s head: I bet they could use some water. But the idea disappeared just as quickly as the scenery passing by his window, and his thoughts turned to swimming. The waves were perfect for bodyboarding, and a sea breeze cooled the air. But all too soon they were headed home, back to the heat. Sebastian was half listening to the radio when the DJ gave the weather report, “The record- breaking heat will continue throughout the afternoon,” she said. “If you have to be outside, remember to hydrate (补水) and stay in the shade.” When they drove by the library, the roofers were still working and the sun was beating down on them.Sebastian wondered whether they have enough water. Sebastian had just finished two weeks of soccer camp, and even with frequent water breaks, it had been miserably hot. It made him think again about taking some water to the roofers. So he shared the idea with his brother, Marcos. Marcos shrugged. “You don’t even know those guys. They’ve probably gone home already anyway.” Maybe Marcos was right Sebastian walked to the end of his driveway, where he could get a view of the library. But the roofers were still there, and the sun was still broiling (酷热的). Sebastian didn’t see any coolers or jugs anywhere. Then he told Dad, “I really think they need some water.” A look of concern came over Dad’s face. He picked up his car keys, saying “I think you’re right. It’s only going to get hotter.” Sebastian stuffed a bag with water bottles and got into the car with his dad. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ “It was all his idea,” dad smiled, nodding at Sebastian. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Sebastian stuffed a bag with water bottles and got into the car with his dad. As they drove to the library, Sebastian nervously approached the roofers and offered the water. A man got down the ladder and held the bag open for the others to see, signaling them to come into the shade for a water break. The roofers looked surprised but grateful. As they passed around the bottles and opened them, one crew member asked, “How do you guys know we have run out of water?” “It was all his idea,” dad smiled, nodding at Sebastian. Sebastian didn’t know how to respond. But the crew’s smiles said it all. Having finished their water, the roofers put the empty bottles back into the bag. They thanked Sebastian and his dad again and waved them goodbye as they drove away. Arriving home, Dad praised Sebastian for his kindheartedness. A simple act made Sebastian feel good. He tossed the empties into the recycling bin. Then he poured two big glasses of cold water, one for himself and one for his dad. 词汇激活 行为类 ①提供:offer/provide ②用完:run out of/use up ③扔:toss/throw 情绪类 ①焦急地:nervously/anxiously ②惊讶的:surprised/amazed 【点睛】[高分句型1]. His favorite magazine had a lot of strange but important content. This month it was insects in danger. The number of certain bugs, including bees, was falling sharply all over the world. “It’s terrible!” Dandelion replied, after reading the article. They were sitting on the outdoor patio (露台) of Cool Yule’s Ice Cream Shop. “Maybe we could make a bee roof garden, too — like in this article,” Doodlebug suggested. Yule recommended making it on the patio, adding a pollinator (传粉昆虫) garden up there would attract bees — and more customers. “Brilliant!” Everyone else responded in a chorus. Now the problem was how to get the funds. Dandelion proposed raising money by setting up a booth near the shop’s entrance to alert people and ask them to donate. The plan was a go! The next day their friends Bog, Tomiko and Izzy met Doodlebug and Dandelion inside Yule’s. Everyone was excited. They made handouts explaining how the garden would attract pollinators, do something to help prevent flooding, and improve the air. “We should have a bee mascot (吉祥物),” Izzy suggested. Doodlebug recalled the old bee costume that his Mom wore for Halloween once. Over the enthusiastic uproar, Dandelion shouted, “And you’ll be the bee, Doodlebug!” “WILL NOT!” Doodlebug shot back. “Too big. We need to stuff some grownup into that costume.” But who, then? For ten mad minutes the kids debated loudly. “Silence, you little noisy kids!” someone suddenly roared. “I’m trying to read about bees in danger!” Thewhole crew turned in shock. There sat Doodlebug’s horrible teacher, Mrs. Noodleknocker. Doodlebug had discovered long ago that she was a World of the Weird fan, but that didn’t make her any nicer. “Bees and butterflies need help!” Mrs. Noodleknocker cried. “But a person can’t even worry about them peacefully!” Paragraph 1: Doodlebug’s eyes went wide as a brilliant idea came to mind. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: The bee campaign was a massive success! ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Doodlebug’s eyes went wide as a brilliant idea came to mind. “THE BEE!” he exclaimed and pointed at Mrs. Noodleknocker, only to be greeted with a glare. Dandelion detailed their plan and asked her to be the bee mascot. After digesting the information, Mrs. Noodleknockerher had her irritable expression softened a bit. “Just forget it,” she said, turning back to her magazine. “Only real bees matter.” Tomiko responded boldly that this whole plan was indeed for real bees. “Please, lady?” Bog coaxed, adding her favor might double the fund. Mrs. Noodleknocker put down the magazine, a tiny smile glinting across her usually mean mouth. It had been a long time since anyone called her a lady. Finally, she snorted and gave in. The bee campaign was a massive success! On the day of fundraising, Mrs. Noodleknocker rocked the bee costume in all her pollinator glory. Instead of threatening passers-by with a sting, the group decided a friendly bee was the right way to go. The following hours witnessed the bee buzzing around the booth, arms and legs punching and kicking. Whenever her strange insect eyes landed on someone, the victim quickly forked over cash — even without being stung. So hilarious and inspiring! A few weeks later Cool Yule’s bee garden bloomed spectacularly, attracting customers and good insects from all around. And Mrs. Noodleknocker was almost a nice person from then on. It proved that being a bee could be good for anyone. 词汇激活 行为类 ①呼喊:exclaim/yell ②详细说明:detail/explain…in detail ③吸引:attract/appeal to 情绪类 ①愤怒:irritable/angry ②鼓舞人心:inspiring/encouraging 【点睛】[高分句型1] Tomiko responded boldly that this whole plan was indeed for real bees.(由连接词that引 导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] Mrs. Noodleknocker put down the magazine, a tiny smile glinting across her usually mean mouth. He initially was frightened of the dog, who glared and barked at him from the bushes. “Hey there... You hungry?” Billy asked softly, trying to calm the dog down as he reached into his pocket to pull out a sandwich. He took one half and held it out to the dog. The dog calmed down, stepped forward and ate it next to Billy. A little calmer, Billy started to pat the dog as he ate the other half. The dog began to lick (舔) his hand when both pieces were finished. “I’m sorry. That was the only sandwich I took with me,” Billy laughed cheerfully, fully lowering his guard. As he got up, the dog began running and jumping happily around Billy, hoping to play with him. “Sorry, buddy. I have to go home,” Billy said. The dog cautiously followed Billy. Later that evening, Billy saw the dog sitting outside his yard through the window. He immediately ran out to her. “Buddy, what are you doing here?” Billy asked as he playfully patted her. The dog wagged her tail, barking in delight. “Alright. Let me try and see if my mom won’t mind taking you in,” Billy said. Billy ran back and told his mom all about the dog. “Are you crazy, Billy? We barely have enough to sustain ourselves. I’m sorry, but it’s a no!” Mom declined him. Billy accepted his mom’s words and went outside to say his goodbyes. However, when he got outside, henoticed the heavy storm was coming and felt for his new friend. He had hoped that the dog would seek shelter somewhere, but she just sat there. He fig-ured she was still waiting for him, so he went out into the rain to try to lead his friend to shelter. “Come on, girl! Go!” Billy said, trying to lead the dog to the nearby sheltered car park. But she wouldn’t move an inch. She stuck right by his side. The rain began to pour down harder. Just at the moment, Mom appeared at the door. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, Billy put up notices in the park to find the dog owner. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Just at the moment, Mom appeared at the door. It was cruel for the dog to remain caught in the rain all night, so Mom agreed to let her in. Mom told Billy that the dog was an excellent dog and it was lucky for him if he owned one. But such a loyal creature was a treasure of her former owner. The owner must be very disappointed and anxious to have lost her. She suggested that he should find the owner as soon as possible. And Billy agreed. The next morning, Billy put up notices in the park to find the dog owner. A few days later, a man called Thomas came to Billy’s house. “Come. Molly !” Thomas shouted joyfully as soon as he saw his dog. He cried, bending down to try to get her attention. Molly responded with an approving bark and approached Thomas, licking his hand. Thomas and some of his friends had been looking for Molly for weeks, but she was nowhere to be found. Thomas realized that he may have lost her forever until he saw the notices. Thomas thanked Billy for having taken good care of Molly for days. 词类激活 行为类 告诉:tell/inform 建议:suggest/advise/recommend/propose 寻找:look for/search for/hunt for 情绪类 失望的:disappointed/dejected 焦虑的:anxious/concerned/worried 开心地:joyfully/delightedly/pleasurably/merrily 【点睛】【高分句型1】She suggested that he should find the owner as soon as possible. Only a dollar, and this was the last cap! Joey had looked at the cap a long time. He wanted it more than anything. Every boy at school had one. Joey thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and neighbors. Joey raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime Lost in thought, Joey stared out the window. “What’s wrong, Joey?” asked Mother. Joey told about the money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill. “I’ll have some errands for you tomorrow.” Joey jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” And away went Joey and Beth to the store with the dollar bill in Joey’s pocket. They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at the sidewalk. One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras - like baseball cap. “What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously. “It’s Ronny,” answered Susan. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!” Joey went over to Ronny. “We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”“Ronny was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window,” put in Billy. “I wanted it a lot. I want to join them.” Ronny said slowly. Suddenly Joey remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up eagerly as they shouted and ran. Joey stared at the ground, thinking hard. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Forcing a smile, Joey showed Beth the empty pocket. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Joey stared at the ground, thinking hard. That cap would make Ronny feel he really belonged to the fellow group. But he himself had longed for it so much. He bit his lower lips, with his hand tightly clutching the dollar. Ronny’s words constantly flashed through his mind. It hit him that he should do something nice for Ronny. He bent down and gave a shout, “Look! Look here!” They all crowded around. There almost hidden in the leaves was the unmistakable green of a dollar bill! Overwhelmingly excited and delighted, Ronny picked up the bill. “Come on!” someone shouted, and they then made a dash for the store. “Why not come together and get something else with your dollar?” Beth asked Joey. Forcing a smile, Joey showed Beth the empty pocket. Eyes wide open, Beth uttered in surprise, “Joey, you didn’t really find Ronny’s dollar. It was yours.” Joey nodded, a broad smile flickering across his face. He explained in a calm tone that the baseball cap mattered a lot more to Ronny. With the cap, he thought, Ronny would feel it easier to fit in with others. After knowing what her brother had done, Beth felt a flush of pride flooding over her. And not far away from them, Ronny was among the group of boys, wearing his new cap. The look on his face made Joey feel good-very good. The one dollar had traded what he thought was more than a cap. 词汇激活 行为类 ①渴望:long for/thirst for/desire ②突然想到:hit/occur to ③说,讲:uttered /said/spoke 情绪类 ①兴奋的,激动的:excited/agitated/thrilled ②高兴的:delighted/glad/happy 【点睛】[高分句型1]He bit his lower lips, with his hand tightly clutching the dollar.(运用了with的复合结构 作状语) [高分句型2]Overwhelmingly excited and delighted, Ronny picked up the bill.(运用了并列形容词短语作状 语) [高分句型3]He explained in a calm tone that the baseball cap mattered a lot more to Ronny.(运用了从属连词 that引导的宾语从句) 6.(2023·湖南长沙·雅礼中学校考一模)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成 一篇完整的短文。 Cheemi was a poor orphan living in Pune. Nobody knew where she had come from. Yet everyone accepted the frail little girl and named her Cheemi — the little sparrow. She helped people by doing odd jobs for them, such as fetching vegetables from the corner shop or looking after babies when their mothers went shopping. Everybody in the neighbourhood liked Cheemi, except Kelly. Kelly was the richest woman there. Cheemi, in her eyes, was dirty and inferior to her. Therefore, she would not allow Cheemi into her big house. The house was almost like a mansion with big wooden carved doors and huge halls. Surprisingly, the windows of the rooms decorated with beads and curtains were very small. Kelly lived with her son, her daughter-in-law Gina and her little grandson, Carl. Carl was a great favourite with the girls. Gina was a very nice, educated lady and didn’t mind Carl being carried by others. Kelly, however, never allowed Cheemi to touch Carl. How Cheemi wished she could play with him! That year, Panshet Dam collapsed and the waters of the Mutha river, near Pune, had entered the city. The water rose fast. There was confusion everywhere. Police vans were trying to help. When water entered their house, Kelly and Gina were on the ground floor. Within seconds the water rose. The police persuaded Kelly and Gina to climb to the top floor. In the hurry and confusion, they forgot that Carl was sleeping on the first floor! The staircases were flooded. It was impossible to get to the bedroom on the first floor. The door to the room was closed but not bolted(闩上). Any moment the water could rush in. The women panicked. “Carl!” they cried. “What will happen to our Carl?” Suddenly the police discovered that one of the bedroom windows was open, but it was too small for an adult tocrawl in. Only a child could. But no one was willing to let their children take the risk. Out of nowhere, Cheemi appeared. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________ Loud cheers greeted Cheemi, a daring and selfless girl. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________ 【答案】 Out of nowhere, Cheemi appeared. Let me help. “I can easily crawl in and get Carl out,” she offered without a second thought. There was no time to waste. The policemen assisted Cheemi to the window: “Jump!” they told her in a determined tone. “We will drop you a rope ladder through the window.” Without a moment’s hesitation, Cheemi jumped through the window. Carl was sleeping soundly. Picking him up, Cheemi put him on her back and tied him tightly to herself with a bed sheet. Slowly she scaled the ladder and peeped through the window. Carefully she undid the bed sheet and handed it, with the child, to a policeman. Then she exerted the last ounce of strength to crawl out of the window. Loud cheers greeted Cheemi, a daring and selfless girl. Seeing everyone clapping for her, Cheemi was stunned to a halt and did not know what the fuss was all about. It was at this point that Kelly dragged Cheemi to her and hugged her tightly. Feeling immensely grateful to Cheemi, Kelly learned what mattered a lot was a person’s courage and humanity. Then she asked Cheemi what reward she would like to have for her bravery. To her surprise, Cheemi said in a low voice, “I want to have an opportunity to play with Carl.” Kelly told her that she could stay with her family as long as she wanted. On hearing this, Cheemi gave a jump in the air, twirling round and round. At last she had a place to stay in and play with little Carl. 救助:assist/help ②.询问:ask/enquire ③.跳:jump/leap 情绪类 ①.感到惊讶的:stunned/shocked ②.感谢的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】[高分句型1]. Paul, a ticket gateline assistant, was working his usual shift at Leagrave Station. “Another wonderful day!” he thought and began to hum (哼) a tune. Suddenly a flash of movement around Platform One caught his attention. After taking a closer look, he realized it was a dog without a collar, silly and excitable, running round after nothing at all. “Oh!” he hurried down, appeared in a flash and successfully got hold of the dog, but it managed to struggle free out of his grasp, jumped down on the tracks and got stuck. Panic struck among standers-by as the dog madly raced up and down the tracks, trying to find a way out. There was a lot of noise of people shouting and dog barking. Then the train kicked in. Obviously, there was no time left to wait for the dog to jump out on his own, but he was not allowed to go down on the track. So he took out his phone and rang the signalman to warn the trains, getting them to slow down, ready to stop if necessary. Like a cat on hot bricks, he looked around to find something useful. Luckily a guy on the platform there had some bread. So without any hesitation, Paul took the bread and used it to attract the dog as the last hope. Immediately, the dog came over to the platform edge with wagging (摇) tails. But it couldn’t jump back up. That’s not the thing, Paul thought. Just as it put its paws up to get the bread, Paul managed to grab it. Thank goodness. Paul dragged it up on to the platform. He couldn’t let go of it for fear that it would struggle free a second time. He just held on, stroking its fur and patting on its head to calm it down. Finally he took the dog into the safety of the staffroom. Then Paul decided to turn to social media to identify its owner. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________ The couple shared the photos and the story on the TikTok that evening. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________ 【答案】 Then Paul decided to turn to social media to identify its owner. Within two hours, a worried couple arrived at Leagrave Station and explained the dog had done a runner. A garage door had been left open and the dog had escaped. They had thought there was little chance of getting it back. It felt like a miracle that the dog was rescued from a horrific death when the train kicked in. When they left, the dog turned and gave a wink goodbye, seemingly saying that Paul was to be thanked. The moving moment was filmed by the couple. The couple shared the photos and the story on the TikTok that evening. The courageous story soon went viral on the Internet. Giving a lot of likes, thousands of animal lovers worldwide praised Paul as a hero for his brave efforts and quick-thinking. The railway tracks are a dangerous place and Paul saved this dog’s life with the help of a piece of bread. Paul became a minor celebrity. Why did they have to work at the homeless shelter over Christmas? Christmas was for opening presents, eating delicious food, and playing games. He didn’t want to spend it handing out presents and food to other people. Mom called it community service, but he called it a bummer “What are you doing?” asked David as he entered Hector’s yard. David was his friend from next door. “Going to build a snow castle?” “No,” Hector said. “I’m just trying to cool off.” “Well, it’s definitely cold out here. What’s wrong?” David asked. “My mom said that we’re going to the homeless shelter on Christmas Day,” Hector said. “We’re going to help provide them with a Christmas lunch and hand out presents to the kids.” “What’s wrong with that?” David asked. Hector stared at him, his mouth hanging open. “What’s wrong? We’re going there on Christmas Day, that’s what.” “It might not be so bad. We did something like that with our local outreach ministry ( 外联部) on Thanksgiving.” David said. Hector hadn’t known that. Still, he didn’t think it would be much fun. The next week passed quickly. Soon it was Christmas Day. It was time for Hector to go to the shelter with his parents. As they left, Hector sat in the back seat of the car with his arms crossed and a frown on his face. At the shelter, a man greeted them with a happy smile. “Thank you for coming to help today,” he said. “I hope you will enjoy your time here.” Hector seriously doubted it. The man told Dad where he could serve food and he pointed Mom toward several large boxes that were filled with presents. Hector stood uneasily, not sure what to do. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________ Afer the meal, Hector helped Mom pass the presents out to the kids. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________ 【答案】 Hector stood uneasily, not sure what to do. The man noticed his hesitation and guided him to a table where he could help set up plates and utensils for the guests. As Hector started working, he began to notice the people around him. They all seemed grateful and happy to be there, sharing a warm meal and a sense of community. Hector couldn't help but feel a little guilty for his earlier reluctance. He realized that these people might not have had a Christmas meal or presents if it weren't for the shelter and volunteers like his family. After the meal, Hector helped Mom pass the presents out to the kids. He saw their eyes light up with excitement and joy as they received their gifts. The children's happiness was contagious, and Hector soon found himself smiling and laughing along with them. As he handed out presents, he noticed David and his family also volunteering, and they exchanged a knowing look. By the end of the day, Hector's earlier anger and disappointment had vanished, replaced by a warm feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment. He had learned the true spirit of Christmas – giving and sharing with others, especially those less fortunate. 词类激活 行为类 ①注意到:notice/spot/see ②分发:hand out/give out/dispense ③明白:learn/realize/understand/be aware of 情绪类 ①感激的:grateful/thankful/appreciative/impassioned ②快乐:joy/pleasure/enjoyment/happiness ③满足:satisfaction/contentment/gratification 【点睛】【高分句型1】The man noticed his hesitation and guided him to a table where he could help set upplates and utensils for the guests. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but in vain. At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the sofa in tiredness. I began to make a key list. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, and the key fob (遥控钥匙) would be expensive to replace. And the iron heart made by my grandson was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my head, I retraced my steps again and again but finally gave up. That night, it turned colder and we had a snow shower. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard the frightening noise of my car alarm from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the key in the door and finally opened it, and then waited until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next-door neighbors being frightened and annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm went off again. I repeated the process. Back in the house, I waited, but the next sound was the front doorbell. Assuming it was a neighbor ready to blame me, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready. In the light snow stood three neighbors from several streets away. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ “What a brilliant idea!” I took the keys in my grateful hands. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】 In the light snow stood three neighbors from several streets away. You are so very kind!” I was dazzled by her cleverness and didn’t think to ask where she had found them. I hadn’t seen it coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail: “We’re sorry but your work assignment has ended as of today.” My heart sank.I wasn’t just a single parent; I was the only parent. My paycheck was survival. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled to be cheerful as I eyed each price tag. “Is everything OK?” Kristil asked. “You seem worried.” “I got some bad news yesterday,” I told her. “I lost my job.” “Oh no,” Kristil said. “Well, I have $100 from Grandma I can give you.” “Absolutely not,” I told her. On Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my moneymaking pursuits. I headed to the pawnshop (当铺) with a ring that my mother had given me a decade earlier. “Best I can do is $70,” the owner said. “The stones are worthless. We’re only interested in the gold.” Over the next week, I constantly applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated community for a birthday party. I watched as she went in, surrounded by all the nice things we couldn’t afford. I drove home defeated. Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing on and off all morning wind. I noticed a small woman with short white hair struggling to open her car door against the As she got out, I realized it was my old professor, Sister Esther Heffernan. Yes, thank you!” James replied and hung up the phone. He had applied to be an in- house volunteer at a foster (寄养) group home and was finally accepted. James, who was just 29 years old, had never considered starting a family. He always wished for one but quickly dismissed the idea, preferring to remain unmarried because his finances never encouraged him to consider starting a family. In his spare time, James liked helping the poor and orphans (孤儿) as he had been in their shoes at one point and could connect better with them. When he was eventually approved as a volunteer at the group home, he felt very satisfied. Though he always felt alone, being a volunteer at the group home came with the company of children; and James was very fond of children. Not to mention, he was a very kind man too. One day, a little girl called Layla was brought in while James was working at the foster home. Tightly, she hugged her teddy, her favorite toy she called Mr. Fluffy, as she got down from the car at the front gate. James had overheard the foster carer talking about the girl, and he knew she was brought here because her single mother haddied, leaving her an orphan. As she walked in, James could see her eyes were teary, and she was looking around, confused. Still feeling bad for her, James returned to his other engagements that day. Suddenly, the girl came running up to him and began pulling his shirt. “Daddy, did you come for me? Are you going to take me home?” she asked, smiling through tears, and James was shocked. He’d never had a girlfriend, much less a child. Why was she calling him dad? Trying his best to hide his shock, he smiled and knelt in front of her.“Hi, I’m James. You’re Layla, right? I’m sorry, sweetie, but I am not your daddy.” The girl’s smile disappeared, and she started to cry. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________ James looked up and saw the foster carer, Clara, who seemed very worried. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________ 【答案】 The girl’s smile disappeared, and she started to cry. “But you should be my daddy. Why are you lying to me? I always see you in my dreams,” cried the little girl. Hearing this, James didn’t know what to say. “Well, honey,” he finally said, “Maybe you mistook me for someone else. I am not your dad.” But the girl refused to listen, insisting he was her daddy and that he had bought Mr. Fluffy for her. Just then, a voice shouted, “Layla, honey, go inside!” James looked up and saw the foster carer, Clara, who seemed very worried. When Layla was gone, Clara told James what had happened to her. At three, her father died of illness, but her mother didn’ t tell her the truth, only telling her to remember his father bought her Mr. Fluffy. They wanted the best for their kids. Jeff and Jenna were like most kids. They wanted the best for themselves-the best place in front of the TV, the biggest piece of cake and the most candies. One night, when the noisy kids were sound asleep, Mama lay awake worrying. She sighed a big sigh, thinking how to teach Jeff and Jenna to mend their selfish ways. Lecturing didn’t work. As Mama lay there, she thought about how kids learn. Kids learn by doing. They learn to walk by walking. That’s the answer, thought Mama. The kids will learn to help others by helping others. But questions of who, when, and where went unanswered as she drifted off to sleep. To her pleasure, those questions were soon answered. The next day, they happened to meet Mrs. Marie, the elderly widow who lived just down the road, at the checkout line at the supermarket. Mama asked the kids to say hello to Mrs. Marie, about whom the kids were a little nervous. She was really old and kind of bent over. And there was that crooked cane she used when she walked. But the real reason they were nervous about her was that two days ago their ball had gone into her yard and knocked over some flowers in the garden and broke the glasses of the attic. They had never apologized. When Mama and the kids were loading their groceries into the car, Mrs. Marie came out of the supermarket pushing her little collapsible shopping cart.“Where are you going?” called Mama. “To the bus stop,” she said, “The bus goes right by my house.” “So does our car,” said Mama. Mama asked the kids to help Mrs. Marie into the car and put her things in the trunk(后备箱). ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ As the car was approaching Mrs. Marie`s house, Mama made a decision. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mama asked the kids to help Mrs. Marie into the car and put her things in the trunk(后备箱) “My goodness, it must be wonderful to have such helpful kids.” Mrs. Marie exclaimed. When the kids realized they were being praised, they broke into a smile, leaning forward to hear better. Mama noticed their change. Here it was the chance. She asked Mrs. Marie, “Is it convenient for you to live alone?”, to which Mrs. Marie’s answer was definitely not. Sometimes, it was really difficult for an old lady like her to get helpers. As the car was approaching Mrs. Marie’s house, Mama made a decision. “Kids, shall we help Mrs. Marie do some chores?” Sensing Mrs. Marie was looking at them hopefully, the kids said yes though hesitant. Jenna helped Mrs. Marie into the room, while Jeff brought in all the items. Mama pitched in and helped. Under guidance, the two of them put the items in place. With Mama’s company, they went upstairs to fix the broken attic window, and then downstairs to water the flowers in the garden. A smile flashing on her face, Mama felt relieved to see that kids had learnt to help others by helping. 词汇激活 行为类 ①放:put/settle ②意识到:realize/appreciate ③看见:see/spot/catch sight of 情绪类 ①赞扬:praise/speak highly of ②感到快乐的:wonderful/ delightful 【点睛】[高分句型1]. A she drove pasta two-story house around a street corner, he was shocked at the frightening sight: It was on fire! He stopped his car and rushed over to assess the situation and to determine if anyone might be trapped inside. He reached for his phone to dial 911, but realized he left it at home. He didn’t hear sirens(警报) in the distance. Nor did he see any bystanders dialing the fire department. Nicholas feared the home’s sleeping occupants might not wakeup in time to move to safety. With no time to waste, he made the courageous decision to enter the home on his own without protective gear(护具). He gained entry through the back door. He rushed upstairs, yelling “fire!” throughout the home. The oldest child, Seionna, heard his screams and woke up. She woke up her younger sister and a friend who had stayed the night. She then ran to grab her 1-year-old baby sister. Nicholas called out to the terrified girls and instructed them to follow him. The sister—Seionna, 18; Shaylee, 13; and Kalia, 1―and their family friend, Livian, 13, followed his directions to escape to the safety of the street. “For a minute I didn’t understand it,” Shaylee recalled. “But my sister ran upstairs with the baby in her hands, yelling at us to get up because there’s a fire. That’s when we went downstairs, and Nicolas was downstairs helping us.” Once outside in the fresh air, the girls shook in far and coughed from the smoke. He ran into the flames to save his 6- year-old sister, Kaylani. The smoke was so thick that he could not see where the child was, but could hear her crying. Surrounded by fire and smoke, he recognized the direction of the cry and rushed towards it. He felt the child, quickly picked her up, and ran out as fast as he could. As flames shot at his feet, he broke the window’s glass with his bare hand. Blood flowed from between his fingers and he ignored the pain. He held the baby tight as the flames came at him. The doorway was sealed by fire. The glass of the window was broken, some smoke ran out of the window, and there was less smoke in the house. Dragging his tired body, he slowly rushed to the door with the child in his arms. The heat returned and he retreated. He did not flinch, rushed out again, and the child was saved. By this time the firemen had arrived, and the people who had come to fight the fire praised Nicholas for his bravery. The family sincerely thanked Nicholas. 词汇激活 行为类 (1)冲出:ran out /rush out (2)抱着:hold/carry (3)到达:arrive/reach 情绪类 (1)感谢:thank /showing one's appreciation/show one's gratitude/be grateful (2)真诚地:sincerely /genuinely/honestly 【点睛】[高分句型1]. While the teenager always talked about his dream of joining the fire department, the man didn’t believe the boy was cut out to be a firefighter because Tim left the usual stereotype (刻板形象) of a bookworm: a straight-A student who wore large glasses, and was physically weak. It was a typical school day. Tim’s math teacher announced their weekly test results, and the boy was delighted to learn that he had scored the highest mark. His friend Christine however, was upset because she got a bad grade. Seeing her sit in a corner with her head resting on the table, he approached her and said, “Hey, Christine I know you got a bad grade, but I can teach you these topics. You’ll grasp it in no time, I’m sure. And you can improve your grade next week. What do you say?” “That’s so sweet of you, Tim! Let’s meet at my house after school today,” Christine saidwith a smile. “Sure!” Tim replied. Christine lived on the outskirts (郊区) of town. It took Tim, who passed his driving test recently, half an hour to drive there. Once his car neared Christine’s estate, he was shocked to see a blazing (熊熊燃烧的) fire. Upon driving closer, he realized her house was on fire. Frightened, he quickly picked up his phone and called 911. Then, Tim took off bis shir, grabbed a bottle of water from his car, and poured it on the shirt. He wrapped the wet shirt around his face, as he had seen in movies, and entered the house. He started climbing towards the hallway window of Christine’s bedroom. Tim found a baseball bat in the hall. It took him five whole minutes to swing it hard enough to break the window. Once the glass was broken, he rushed towards Christine’s room. He couldn’t see much because of the thick black smoke floating in the air, but he managed to locale her. She was lying unconscious (昏迷的) on her bed after breathing in the smoke. He knew he had to act fast before it was too late. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Roger received an unexpected call from the hospital telling him of Tim’s heroic act. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 He knew he had to act fast before it was too late. Quickly, he covered Christine with his wet shirt and, with all his strength, picked her up in his arms. Holding his breath, he carried her and rushed to the broken window in the smoke. Once there, Tim jumped out of the window without hesitation and landed on the grass with Christine, instantly passing out. Upon receiving the call for help, the firefighters arrived in a fire engine just a few minutes later, only to find the two teenagers lying on the grass unconscious. Tim and Christine were hurried to the nearest hospital without any delay. Roger received an unexpected call from the hospital telling him of Tim’s heroic act. He immediately drove to the hospital, where the doctors told him Christine would have died if his son hadn’t jumped out of the window with her in time. Fortunately, both teenagers suffered no major injuries and regained consciousness. Just then, Christine’s parents arrived. Having learnt about Tim’s heroic act, they thanked him again and again. Life, as I knew it, had changed. My beloved grandmother, my nanny, a stand-in parent in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal, and could never be cured. As she watched Getaway on television, she remarked to me that she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten. At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help. “My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair. I can offer nothing but gratitude.” I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing come, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame. Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through my full-time study, babysitting and waiting tables, along with the responsibility of caring for a grandparent who was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious. One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United State arrived in our letterbox. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________ 【答案】One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United States arrived in our letterbox. The simple postcard from America to our sleepy little seaside town in Australia was to me a beacon of light. I held it tight in my hands, read and re-read the words scrawled across the back: Nanny Del, thinking of you in Michigan, USA... From that day, our letterbox became the destination for postcards from all over the world. Our letterbox became a hotel, accommodating travel-weary cards from everywhere: India, Italy, China, and Japan. The cards were love and from all corners of the globe. I sat next to my Nanny, reading the cards to her. Tears of happiness mixed with grief fell onto those postcards. In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. Her hospital bed became an airport lounge, where we researched and planned our next departure. We visited Milan and cruised the Japanese Sca before hopping over to Taiwan. We travelled the entirety of the United States. Nanny hung out for every visit from the postman, eagerly awaiting news of her next departure.” I just can’t believe strangers did this for a little old lady they’ve never met” became a sentiment she murmured many times. I reached out to the senders; reminding them that they’d impacted strangers in a way they’d perhaps never know. Our travels took us far and wide. Cancer could not stop us. 词汇激活 行为类 ①坐着:sit/be seated ②等待:await/wait for/expect ③影响:impact/affect 情绪类 ①开心、幸福:happiness/joy/delight ②悲伤:grief/sadness/sorrow 【点睛】【高分句型1】Her hospital bed became an airport lounge, where we researched and planned our next departure.(运用了where引导的定语从句) 【高分句型2】I reached out to the senders; reminding them that they’d impacted strangers in a way they’d perhaps never know.
