话题经典小故事 ——《The Mice and the Lazy Dog》田鼠与懒惰的狗
Under the amber autumn sky, a bustling colony of field mice scurried through the rustling
leaves. Their mission was urgent – to stockpile enough provisions before winter's icy grip tightened.
Elderly mice directed the young, their tiny paws deftly sorting hazelnuts and dried berries into neatly
lined underground chambers.
Near the oak tree's roots lounged Brutus, a burly mastiff with glossy brown fur. "Join us,
Brutus!" piped a mouse with a sunflower seed balanced on its head. "Winter spares no creature."
The dog stretched lazily, his tail thumping against fallen acorns. "Foolish rodents! Can't you see the
sun still kisses the earth?"在橡树根部附近,一只长着光滑棕色皮毛的魁梧的獒犬布鲁图斯懒洋洋地躺着。“加
入我们,布鲁图斯!”一只头上顶着一颗葵花籽的老鼠尖声叫道。“冬天不会放过任何生
物。”那条狗懒洋洋地伸着懒腰,尾巴撞在掉落的橡子上。“愚蠢的啮齿动物!难道你没看
见太阳还在亲吻着大地吗?
Weeks later, the first blizzard transformed the landscape into a crystalline prison. The mice
huddled contentedly around their seed-stuffed larders when frantic scratching echoed through their
tunnels. Brutus stood at the entrance, his once-shiny coat matted with frostbitten patches. "The...the
frozen river trapped my prey," he stammered through chattering teeth.
A murmur rippled through the colony. "Let him starve!" squeaked a mouse whose paw he'd
once stepped on. The eldest mouse, blind in one eye from decades of survival, silenced them with a
raised claw. "Mercy warms both giver and receiver."
That winter, Brutus' thunderous bark deterred prowling foxes. Come spring, he dug irrigation
channels to protect their stores from floods. The mice learned that compassion could tame even the
proudest heart.

Clara dyed the cat blue "for science", her mother simply remarked, "Indigo suits you better, Mr.
Whiskers," handing Clara stain-removal gloves.

Why not find a new friend in 2025—yourself! You may want to get love and care from a good
friendship. Well, you shouldn't have to go far to find them.
Loving yourself, also called self-love, means being as kind to yourself as you are to others.
Give yourself the love and care you should give your friends and family. Becky Goddard-Hill, the
writer of Create Your Own Confidence, says it means speaking to yourself with kindness. It also
means taking really good care of your body and mind.Studies show that self-love is good for your schoolwork, health and friendships. Self-love
makes you believe in yourself. It makes you feel that you deserve(值得)good things, such as
kind friends and fun experiences. It doesn't mean you'll be happy all the time, but when you face
difficulties, you won't upset yourself.
Start by being kind instead of being angry. When you make a mistake, don't get angry with
yourself. Tell yourself that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. Then work out what you could do
differently next time. Remember that no one is perfect. Becky suggests writing down your
strengths(优点)as they can help you remember how excellent you are. " Looking at the list often
will help bring out the best in you," says Becky.
1.Which of the following might the writer of the passage agree with?
A. Good friends are hard to find.
B. We should give friends love and care.
C. New friends are usually better than old ones.
D. We should take our friends' advice most of the time.
2.Which shows the right order of the information in this passage?
A. Meanings→Reasons→Ways B. Ways→Reasons→Meanings
C. Meanings→Ways→Reasons D. Reasons→Ways→Meanings
3.What should you do when you make a mistake?
A. Learn from the mistake and avoid it next time.
B. Get angry with yourself and keep it in your mind.
C. Tell yourself that people always make mistakes.
D. Remember that no one is perfect and forget it quickly.
4.Which should not be on the list mentioned in the last paragraph?
①Tina thinks I'm helpful. ②I'm good at playing soccer.
③Wendy often disagrees with me. ④I won third prize in the high jump.
A.① B.② C. ③ D.④
5.What's the best title for the passage?
A. Believe in yourself B. Learn from past mistakes
C. Be a friend of yourself D. Treat people with love and care
长难句解析difficulties, you won't upset yourself.
在第一个分句中, you'll be happy all the
I, you won't
upset yourself是主句。

Even if you think that your parents are too strict at times, loving your parents is a normal and
happy part of life. You love them for the fact that they gave birth to you, raised you, and are parts
of who you are. Here are some ways to love your parents.
Tell them you love them every morning. A gentle "Good morning" and "I love you" will warm
the coldest heart. Remember that they brought you into this world. Respect (尊重) them more and
value the time you spend together. You can use the time to learn from them when you're off on your
own. It's OK to get angry but angry actions don't help you or your parents. Act calmly(冷静地),cool off, keep a diary of your feelings, or talk to a friend. After this, share your feelings with your
parents.
Follow their rules. It will make your attitude(态度) better and win you more respect from them.
You may feel bad when you don't get what you want or you have to clean. However, you should
remember they keep a roof (庇护) over your head when it's cold, raining, snowing, or too hot.
Maybe you can't do many things because of these rules, but think about it, there are a lot of things
you still can do.
Stay with them more. Do things with your parents like watching TV, or going somewhere with
them. Anyway, spend as much time with them as you can. Listen to their old stories and learn from
them. You will find they are your teachers in this way or another.
Some people just may not be able to love their parents. There can be realistic (现实的) reasons
for this, family violence(暴力) for example. Ask for help if you are being hurt in any way. Parents
do not have a right to hurt you.

A.your time together B.your parents C.angry actions
2.We can do things to stay with parents EXCEPT ____.
