Interested in the shape and structure of the dragonfly wings, they discovered that their veins give the wings both durability and flexibility, enabling dragonflies to fly with flexibility and speed. “When we looked closely at the patterns on a dragonfly’s wing, we realized that it includes many con vex polygons (凸多边形),” Akbarzadeh said. “The con vex network of the wing is very similar to the efficient networks we design,” he said. “We thought, ‘Could we use our geometry-based analysis tools to analyze these patterns and recreate them under different conditions for other types of wings?’” he added. The researchers studied the wing structure’s behaviour by copying its structural pattern. “Eventually, we showed that this approach could result in more efficient wing structure against out-of-plane bending,” Akbarzadeh said. The team took advantage of their discoveries in practical situations by combining designs inspired by dragonflies with a 2D extruded air frame (挤压机身) of a being 777 wing at a 1:120 scale. The team observed a remarkable increase in the structural efficiency of the wings. The dragonfly design improved the out-of-plane stability by 25%, showing the possibility of developing lighter and more efficient wing designs. The 7-38-55 rule was created by psychologist alert Mehrabian, who, in the late 1960 s, performed two studies that would serve as its base. In his first study, Mehrabian asked 30 women participants to listen to words spoken in different bones of voice (positive, neutral or negative). His second study was similar except this time 37 women participants were also given a photograph of a person’s face with different expressions (like, neutral or dislike). Mehrabian found that, compared with words, participants were better at detecting the emotional change in the intonation and facial expressions. We can’t say that Mehrabian’s research is wrong or useless. However, nothing in Mehrabian’s research suggests the 7-38-55 rule can be applied to communication as a whole. Imagine that you’re listening to a lecture. It can be on any subject you’d like. Now imagine that same lecture delivered through a series of cods, grunts, gesture and winks. Would you say you get 93 % of the content? Probably not. In a similar manner, if words were really only 7 % of communication, then why would anybody need to learn a foreign language? You should be able to deal with any foreign culture easily with nods, quiet smiles, and the occasional chest bump (撞胸).
