Who can enter?
The competition is open to any child aged between 5 and 11 of any writing ability, who lives in the UK

What are the requirements for the entry?

* No part of the story can be created, written or developed using all.
* Stories must be 500 words or under (the title is not included in the word count) and there are no rules on the

Each competitor who reaches the final stage of the competition will receive a £ 20 National Book Token. The
bronze, silver and gold winners will all receive a collection of books, with the gold winners also winning 500 books
for their school. The bronze, silver and gold winners will also take home a framed illustration of their story from a
top children’s illustrator. The illustrations will also be included in a 500 Words winner’s book, alongside their story.

Acker teaches science at Gideons Elementary School, and she’s on a mission to boost her students’ confidence
and self-love. The kids say their positive affirmations (肯定) every morning before class starts. The daily routine

Acker also has cards printed out with words such as powerful, great, talented, valued and intelligent. “When
they cannot think of an affirm at ion themselves, I encourage them to pick a card and say that in the mirror,” she
says.
With every passing day, the kids say it with more confidence as they look at their own reflections.
Acker is onto something, experts say.
In Dr. Marcuetta Sims’s work with adults, most of their mental damage is connected to messages they got
when they were younger and the beliefs that resulted from that, she says.
“Our words hold so much power and when these words are being internalized by children who are still in the
process of developing their sense of self, those words carry even more weight,” Sims says. “The way we speak to
children is the way they learn how to speak to themselves. It’s how they develop their self-talk, which influences
their behaviors and the choice they make in life.”

Researchers from the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania have found that dragonfly
wings could help engineers design lighter, stronger and more durable (耐用的) aircraft wings. Building on the rules
of biomimicry (生物模拟), Masoud Akbarzadeh and his student Hao Zheng have studied the wing of a dragonfly to
redesign that of a boding 777.
“Nature is a great teacher in telling us how to optimize systems ” Akbarzadeh said. “And when you look at a
dragonfly, you see wings that have evolved over millions of years into an incredibly light weight, efficient and
strong structure,” he added.
Interested in the shape and structure of the dragonfly wings, they discovered that their veins give the wings
both durability and flexibility, enabling dragonflies to fly with flexibility and speed. “When we looked closely at
the patterns on a dragonfly’s wing, we realized that it includes many con vex polygons (凸多边形),” Akbarzadeh
said.
“The con vex network of the wing is very similar to the efficient networks we design,” he said. “We thought,
‘Could we use our geometry-based analysis tools to analyze these patterns and recreate them under different
conditions for other types of wings?’” he added.
The researchers studied the wing structure’s behaviour by copying its structural pattern. “Eventually, we
showed that this approach could result in more efficient wing structure against out-of-plane bending,” Akbarzadeh
said.
The team took advantage of their discoveries in practical situations by combining designs inspired by
dragonflies with a 2D extruded air frame (挤压机身) of a being 777 wing at a 1:120 scale. The team observed a
remarkable increase in the structural efficiency of the wings. The dragonfly design improved the out-of-plane
stability by 25%, showing the possibility of developing lighter and more efficient wing designs.
Moving forward, the team intends to look deeper into the 3D structure of the dragonfly wing to discover

Sometimes the best thing in life is a simple formula (公式) that can solve a complex problem, such as the
famous 7-38-55 rule. This one claims that only 7 % of a conversation’s meaning is found in the words. The
remaining 93 % comes from the speaker’s tone of voice and body language (38 % and 55 %, respectively).
The 7-38-55 rule was created by psychologist alert Mehrabian, who, in the late 1960 s, performed two studies
that would serve as its base. In his first study, Mehrabian asked 30 women participants to listen to words spoken in
different bones of voice (positive, neutral or negative). His second study was similar except this time 37 women
participants were also given a photograph of a person’s face with different expressions (like, neutral or dislike).
Mehrabian found that, compared with words, participants were better at detecting the emotional change in the
intonation and facial expressions.
We can’t say that Mehrabian’s research is wrong or useless. However, nothing in Mehrabian’s research
suggests the 7-38-55 rule can be applied to communication as a whole. Imagine that you’re listening to a lecture. It
can be on any subject you’d like. Now imagine that same lecture delivered through a series of cods, grunts, gesture
and winks. Would you say you get 93 % of the content? Probably not. In a similar manner, if words were really
only 7 % of communication, then why would anybody need to learn a foreign language? You should be able to deal
with any foreign culture easily with nods, quiet smiles, and the occasional chest bump (撞胸). But as anyone who
has traveled inter nation ally can tell you, a good translation dictionary help you understand more than 7 % of a
person’s meaning.

complex problems, but the truth is that such rules are false comforts. It takes curiosity, sympathy, insight, and
emotional intelligence to communicate with others and create meaningful connections. There is no easy number to
manage that, but maybe there is also comfort to be found in knowing that you aren’t limited by some fixed formula.
