Starting high school can be difficult.
Everyone is nervous and nobody knows where to go for classes. Thinking about making
new friends might make you feel nervous, too. But don’t worry. You are not alone. You are
going to school with a group of students who are also your age, and we have several tips to
share.
Forget your fear and just talk to someone. It might be easier said than done, but try to
take a deep breath and voice. Don’t be afraid to approach people. Introduce yourself and start
a conversation about something you have in common. Sit in the middle of the classroom with
as many new friends around you as possible.
Join clubs.
Join after-school activities that interest you and make friends in the club. If you don’t
join anything, you will be just going to class and then going home. Being in a club forces you
to be more social.
Stay clean.
No one likes a bad smell that could knock someone over. Shower every day, brush your
teeth and wash your hair. Try to make yourself look neat, whatever you wear.
Be respectful of people’s differences.
Everyone has his or her own opinion about the world and everyone believes in different
things. It’s a good thing to have friends with different opinions because you can each share

to be. Everyone was so friendly and polite. They made me feel at ease. It was like I’d been at
the school for a hundred years!
The day started very early at 7:00 am. I had my breakfast down stairs with my mom. She

My mom dropped me off at the school gates about five minutes before the bell. A little
blonde(金发的) girl got dropped off at the same time and started waving(招手) at me. She ran
over and told me her name was Abigail. She was very nice and we became close straight

A California-based nonprofit is searching to build an AI language that allows humans to
more deeply understand non-human languages to help change our ecological impact on our
Earth.
Aza Raskin is the co-founder and president of the Earth Species Project (ESP), a non-
profit that uses a form of artificial intelligence (AI) to translate non-human languages. ESP
wants to use its machine learning technology to translate and make this vital information
widely available (可得到的) to the public.
Raskin emphasized their goal to help conservation by explaining, “The end we are
working towards is, can we decode animal communication, discover the non-human language.
Along the way and equally important is that we are developing technology that supports
biologists and conservation now,” ESP believes that understanding languages can help deepen
our relationship with animals and allow us to more efficiently protect them.
In the past, understanding the communication of animals was based on long and boring
observations. From primate calls of alarms to dolphin whistles, scientists have been fascinated
by the different forms of non-human communication present in these animals. With the
development of new technologies, researchers have now begun to understand the huge
amounts of data available through machine learning.
Elodie Briefer, an associate professor at the University of Copenhagen, has recently
helped co-develop a pig grunt analyzing software that helps scientists understand whether the
pigs are expressing positive or negative emotions. In contrast, ESP is approaching decoding
differently, by focusing on all species, not just one. The Earth Species Project believes that
there is a likelihood that social species communicate with each other, for instance, whales and
dolphins.
Although the Earth Species Project believes that understanding AI machine learning data
is only one step to full communication, they are hopeful that one day we will be able to
understand entire systems of communication.
28.According to Aza Raskin, the goal of the Earth Species Project is ________.
A.to develop flee advanced AI technology for everyone
B.to communicate with animals such as whales and dolphins
C.to provide information of animal species for the public
D.to help conserve animals by understanding their languages
29.According to the article, the methods scientists have used to discover the communication
of animals do NOT include ________.
A.spending a lot of time observing animal communications
B.using a form of artificial intelligence to translate animal languages
C.developing software to analyze a pig’s emotions through its grunts
D.playing recordings of animal sounds to communicate with other social animals
30.Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the article?
A .ESP aims to provide free translation services for the public through advanced
artificial intelligence technologies.
B.Machine learning has made it possible for researchers to understand huge amounts of
data about animal communication.
C. Elodie Briefer has helped develop software which is exactly what ESP needs to
decode animal language.
D. Researchers in the Earth Species Project believe that all species on Earth can
communicate with one another.
31.What is probably the best title for the text?
A.Artificial Intelligence and Its Impact on Society
B.The Ambition of Earth Species Project
C.AI Technology Helps Understand Animal Languages
D.Save the Animals and Their Languages
D
You do not need to stop creating because you’ve gotten older. Creativity customers as
young as 40 have asked me. “Am I too old to create?” I encourage them to imagine what it
might be like to reach their 80s after decades of devotion to their chosen art form. How skilled
and confident might they be? The following tips will help you say a “yes” to your creativity,
even as you accept the realities of aging.
Build your group of like-minded souls, which encourages you and, gives you honest and
helpful feedback. Take charge of your health. If you have physical issues, consider them, but
continue to create. Change the length and frequency of your work, or move from one art from
to another-whatever makes sense for your changing circumstances. Ask yourself why you
create. Is it because it fills you with joy and gives you purpose? Really, creating regularly can
embed (嵌入) the habit of creating right down into your bones. No period of daily time is too
short to stay connected with your creativity. Keep your current and future projects in your
thoughts all day, like background music, which keeps them alive! It also keeps you
enthusiastic and brings you back to your creativity after a forced interruption. Finally, don’t
lose yourself in comparisons with other artists. You’re on your own path, and it is like no one
else’s.
In his 80s, Nova Scotia visual artist Charles Coupar completed 15 pastel still lifes (粉彩
静物画) for a personal exhibition and spent over an hour on his opening night chatting with
fans and new admirers. American poet, novelist and journal writer May Sarton continued to
write into her 80s. She retained(保留,保持) her independence and devotion to creativity
until the end, even dictating her journal into a tape recorder after suffering a serious disease
Countless other artists, poets, musicians and performers can inspire you to continue taking
creative-risks and to build your life’s work.
If you develop it, creativity will remain a brightly burning fame inside you, calling on
you to make something wonderful, though you are in your eighties.
32.Which statement would the author probably agree with?
A.Creating has nothing to do with one’s age.
B.Creativity does not come easy for the aged.
C.The aged need to restart to develop their creativity.
D.The aged should face the truth that they lack creativity.
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A.One should find ways to balance health with creating.
B.One should find a fixed period of time every day to create.
C.Keeping in step with other artists is the key to making progress.
D.Creating should be done without other people’s involvement.
34.What does the author tell us about creativity?
A.Good rest contributes to greater creativity.
B.Enthusiasm is a form of expression for creativity.
C.Regular creating can keep your creating habit alive.
D.It is hard to recover creativity once interrupted.
35.Why did the author give examples in the third paragraph?
A.To encourage the old to break through the age barrier.
B.To inspire the aged to get famous in at least one field.
C.To encourage the old to try to defeat the younger generation.
D.To show the aged have extremely strong creativity as never before.

第二节(共 10 小题; 每小题 1.5 分, 满分 15 分)
阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Although English is not as old as Chinese,
56
is spoken by many people around
the world every day. English speakers
57
are from all over the world always make
new words and we should be able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever
think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers,
58
(especial) when they are not
made of ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They
came from a big city
59
(call) Hamburg in Germany.
They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. Some Americans saw them
eating round pieces of beef. They had never seen such
60
strange way. They couldn’t
help
61
(ask) the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question
and answered, “We came from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and
had an idea. He made up
62
(he) mind to do something new. He cooked some round
63
(piece) of the beef like what the men from Hamburg ate and
64
(sell) it to
quite a few countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it is certainly
65
(interest).

第二节 (满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon
and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping sorrowfully when she thought
of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt
a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she
had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand (货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged
seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, do you want to
have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me... ” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man, “come in”.
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was
eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her
tears. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove
me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled , “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a
bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you
were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your
gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock ;she remembered her mother’s
familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a
stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for
me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her
rudeness as soon as she arrived home.
