A
Everyone has high school memories that they cherish for life. For me, the best
moments of my school life were the days spent with my friends during Thanksgiving
Carnivals (嘉年华).
Last year, my school turned the carnival into a chance to raise money for the
poor by collecting recycled items and selling foods and drinks.
That morning, our principal made a speech during our assembly. He said that we
should develop a Thanksgiving habit of giving to charity to show how thankful we are
for what we have.
After that, the carnival was in full swing. Each grade tried its best to collect
different kinds of items like books and handicraft donated by both students and
teachers. Some even gave out valuable calligraphy and came with homemade food.
Then we gave prices to different items and put them in order on display.
Long before the carnival, my friends and I decided to make desserts and put
them on sale. But it turned out to be a very hard task for us because we seldom help
our parents out with cooking at home. To start with, we studied the recipes in a cook
6book. Then we gave it a try. You can imagine how ugly our first cookies were. The
process was a bit difficult, but it was unbelievable when we finally made 100 cups of
Serradura (木糠布丁) and dozens of cookies before the sunrise. Although it was tiring,
we wanted to do it and our sense of achievement was much greater than our
sleepiness.
It was such a relief that our products quickly sold out! The money we earned
became part of the fund of more than 150,000 MOP (澳门元) that the whole school
had raised by the end of the day.
This Thanksgiving Carnival helped me to be thankful for everything around me.
It also reminded me that happiness can come from helping those in need.

Recently, just before our holidays, our school held a competition. It was to raise
money for two charities, in any way we wanted. The grade that raised the most money
7would be the winner and get a prize.
Immediately, we started to brainstorm ideas for our charity event. Finally we
decided on two events. ①
Our first event was a school talent competition in lower grades. The winner of
the competition would get a medal and lots of sweets. It sounded interesting so lots of
people signed up (报名) to perform. ②
There was an entrance fee for people who wanted to watch the competition. The
event was very popular so we raised a lot of money, about £130. However, we heard
that another grade had raised £180. ③
The five-a-side dodge-ball (躲避球) competition was held on the last day of term.
To enter, you had to find five friends and pay the entrance fee (50 pence a person),
you were ready to go. Once again, there was a prize and with a bit of advertising, lots
of people came to see the play. ④
So we did manage to raise a lot of money, although the other grades did quite
well too. But who was the winner was not important any longer. Being able to help
was.
( ) 5. How did the students get the ideas for their charity event?
A. They think together for creative ideas.
B. They asked their parents for their ideas.
C. They asked their teachers for their help.

( ) 7. Where should the sentence “We knew our next event had to be good.” be
put?
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
( ) 8. Why did the school hold the competition?

In 1991, China Youth Daily photo-journalist Jie Hailong took a
series of photos named “I want to study”. Among them, the most
touching one shows a little girl: a pair of clear black eyes that really
touched the heart of many Chinese people. The desire and helplessness in “I want to
study” became the concern of the whole society. Later, this photo was picked up by
the China Youth Development Foundation and the Communist Youth League Central
12Committee as the symbol of Project Hope. And the life of the “big eyes” girl was
changed. After graduation from college, Su Mingjuan works in a bank and every year
she provides money to aid students in need. Just like Su, millions of other mountain
children have left the mountains with the help of this student aid program, and have
lived better lives through education.
The program has been growing and expanding since then. More than 760 Hope
Primary Schools are built every year. Now, the leaders of Project Hope plan to set up
the Hope Library in every Hope Primary School to bring children more care, give
