[2023·浙江省金华十校一模]London, with countless famous sites and all manner of food, drink, shopping,
history, and culture, is definitely a wonderful city to visit.
Time Zone
Greenwich Mean Time during the winter, British Summer Time during the rest of the year (starting at DaylightSaving Time).
Best Time to Go
The best time to visit London overall is in spring, when the temperatures have warmed up, the sun has started
to shine and London's gardens and parks are looking their best. However, the reality is that the best time to travel to
London depends a lot on what you're looking for. If you're all about taking a look inside Queen Liz's palace, you'd
better make it in summer, while winter is beautiful and festive for those looking to get their fill of Christmas
markets and traditional cheer.
Things to Know
Londoners, and English people in general, have a much different manner of interacting with one another than
Americans do while an American might think nothing of smiling at a stranger they pass on the sidewalk or asking
about work in the first few minutes of a conversation, Londoners might consider it impolite or strange. Don't
mistake this for unfriendliness; it's just a cultural difference. Instead, talk about things like movies, TV shows,
books, your travels, and the like, instead of work or family.
How to Get Around
Getting around London is unbelievably easy thanks to the wellmaintained and extensive Underground. The
Underground, unlike American transportation systems which often pay per ride or pay per length of trip, are paid in
zones. Fare also varies based on time of day and the method you use to pay. It's worth getting an Oyster card to
make your life that much simpler.

When thinking about quitting (giving up) smoking, list all the reasons why you want to quit. Every night
before going to bed, repeat one of the reasons 10 times.
Decide that you want to quit. Try to avoid thinking how difficult it might be. For example, think of all the
time you waste taking cigarette breaks, rushing out to buy a pack, hunting for a light. Set a date for quitting —
perhaps a special day like your birthday or a holiday. If you smoke heavily at work, quit during your vacation.
Don't let anything change the date. Begin to condition yourself physically; start a modest (适度的) exercise; drink
more water; get plenty of rest.
Immediately after quitting...
The first few days after you quit, spend as much free time as possible in places where smoking is forbidden
(禁止), such as libraries, museums, offices and so on.
Drink water and fruit juice. Try to avoid wine, coffee, and other drinks which remind you of cigarette
smoking.
Start a conversation with someone instead of a match for a cigarette.
If you miss the feeling of having a cigarette in your hand, play with something else — a pencil,a pen or a
ruler.
4.Which of the following statements is best supported by the author?
A. Whenever you feel like a cigarette, try to forget it by starting a conversation with someone.

You've no doubt heard people say how much they “need” a holiday, when what they really mean is that they
want one.Certainly, people working under pressure feel a very strong desire to escape from work and become less
tight during their holidays, and experience a changed environment.
However, work for many people today is office work and mental, rather than physical tasks. These people
may seek much more energytaking activities while on holiday, rather than simply lying on a beach.Once people
become used to going on holiday, taking holidays becomes a habit. For many people the holiday is one of the last
things to be given up,and indeed many workers have chosen to spend some of their last pay when being on
holiday. It may give them a “lift” in facing some difficulties in life.
Most of us also enjoy showing off the lovely tans-dark(晒黑的) skins we get from a holiday. So many
tourists are now able to afford holidays in the sun that tans have become quite common; although we join a tan
together with health,it has been fully shown that too much sunshine will result in high danger of skin problems,
as well as drying out one's skin and leading to more lines on your face later in life.
8.According to the passage above, more and more people choose to have holidays because they
.
A.hate working indoors all the time
B.want to get away from work
C.love enjoying the beauties of nature
D.become rich and want a better life

11.At the end of the passage the writer tries to tell the reader .
A.the importance of getting sunshine
B.the bad effect of being on holiday
C.the result of getting sun tanned
D.the healthy look of being tanned
D(2023届江苏省苏北四市一调试题)
Animals can adapt quickly to survive unfavorable environmental conditions. Evidence is mounting to show
that plants can, too. A paper published in the journal Trends in Plant Science details how plants are rapidly adapting
to the effects of climate change, and how they are passing down these adaptations to their offspring(后代).
Plants are facing more environmental stresses than ever. For example, climate change is making winters
shorter in many locations, and plants are responding. “Many plants require a minimum period of cold in order to set
up their environmental clock to define their flowering time,” says Martinelli, a plant geneticist at the University of
Florence. “As cold seasons shorten, plants have adapted to require shorter periods of cold to delay flowering. These
mechanisms allow plants to avoid flowering in periods when they have fewer opportunities to reproduce.”
Because plants don’t have neural(神经的) networks, their memory is based entirely on cellular(细胞
的),molecular(分子的),and biochemical networks. These networks make up what the researchers call somatic
memory(体细胞记忆). “It allows plants to recognize the occurrence of a previous environmental condition and to
react accordingly,” says Martinelli.
These somatic memories can then be passed to the plants’ offspring via epigenetics(表现遗传). “Several
examples demonstrate the existence of molecular mechanisms modulating plant memory to environmental stresses
and affecting the adaptation of offspring to these stresses,” says Martinelli.
Going forward, Martinelli hopes to understand even more about the genes that are being passed down. “We are
particularly interested in decoding the epigenetic alphabet without changes in DNA sequence(序列),”he says. “This
is especially important when we consider the rapid climate change, we observe today that every living organism,
including plants, needs to quickly adapt to survive.”
12.What adaptations have plants made to shortened cold seasons?
A.They have shortened their flowering time.
B.They have got more chances to reproduce.
C.They have avoided flowering in cold seasons.
D.They have adjusted their environmental clock.
13.What can we learn about somatic memory?
A.It is entirely based on neural networks.
B.It can help the plants’ offspring to survive.
C.It can help relieve environmental stresses.
D.It disturbs the plants’ biochemical networks.14.What does the underlined word “modulating” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Adjusting. B.Treasuring.
C.Recording. D.Sharing.
15.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Plants are smart about flowering time
B.Plants can also adapt to climate change
C.Environmental stresses challenge plants
D.Mysteries of plant genes are to be unfolded

Being safe in your everyday life needs knowledge. 1 Mastering such kind of knowledge can help keep
yourself safe.
2 You shouldn't walk on your own outside, especially at night. Make sure you know where the public
phones are. In case anything dangerous happens, you can find them easily and quickly.
3 For example, when a bus is full of people, it is easy enough for a thief to take away the things in the
bag on your back.
If you are followed by someone whom you don't know or who appears very dangerous, cross the street and go
to the other way so as to let the person understand that you know he or she is after you. 4 You are safer in the
street than you are alone in your home or in a lift.
If you have to take a bus to a place far away, try to get to the stop a few minutes earlier before the bus leaves.
This stops other people from studying you. 5 Sit behind the driver or with other people. Don't sleep on the bus
so that you can keep on guard all the time.
A.On the bus, don't sit alone.
B.Next, don't go home at once.
C.Always notice the environment around you.
D.You should turn to your parents or your friends.
E.If you remember the following information, your life will be much safer.
F.Don't offer any personal information to the people that you don't know online.
G.Your bag should be carried towards the front of your body instead of putting it on your back.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lorena parted the curtain in her living room and looked out onto the wet street. She was relieved the
sunlight appeared. If it didn’t stop raining it would ruin her day. Her mother had promised to drive her to
Fashion Fair if it were sunny. Lorena was desperate to go there because she had to replace (赔还) a
Nike jacket.
Earlier that Wednesday afternoon, Eddie, the most popular seventh-grader, had given Lorena his jacket
and asked her to keep an eye as he would play basketball in a hurry. Lorena was quite happy to be
of help.
During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on
Eddie’s jacket, Lorena folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly.
She felt sick opening the frog’s belly.
When the bell rang Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after
school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and
drove away when Lorena looked out of the window and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She shot
from her seat and ran up to the driver. “You’ve got to stop! I forgot Eddie’s jacket!” “Who’s Eddie? I
don’t know Eddie,” the driver said crossly. “Sit down.”
All that evening she was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn’t made them
dissect (解剖) frogs, she wouldn’t have been so absent-minded. The next day Lorena rushed from the bus
to the biology room. The jacket was not there!
“How can I ever tell Eddie?” she closed her eyes. She spent most of her break and lunch period in the rest
room, brushing her hair and worrying. On Friday she stayed home to avoid Eddie. She told her mother she
wanted to go shopping to buy her a gift for her birthday, which was the next week. Actually, she wanted
to buy a Nike jacket with her life savings at Fashion Fair.
