It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat hurts. You
begin to sneeze and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be a
common cold or the flu (流感) that’s been going around?
A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it’s usually easy to deal with. Some take
medicine while others drink herbal tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.
On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes
it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million
people from 1918 to 1919.
Don’t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu
vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop
antibodies (抗体). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.
The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as
H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can’t help us against all types of flu. That’s
why we need to get the vaccine every year.
However, good health habits may also help stop you from developing a cold or flu. Washing
your hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise
and eat healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system

Once upon a time all feelings went to an island for a vacation, and each was having a
goodtime. Suddenly, a warning of a strong storm was announced, so all rushed to their boats. Yet,
Love did not wish to run away quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened,
Love realized it was time to leave. But there were no boats to use. Love looked around with hope.
Just then Richness was passing by Love in a large boat. Love shouted, “Richness, can you take
me with you?” Richness answered, “No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There
is no place here for you. ”
Love decided to ask Vanity(虚荣) who was also passing by in a beautiful boat for help, But
Vanity said with a cold voice, “No, I can’t take you with me. My boat will get dirty with your
mummy feet.”
Sorrow passed by after some time. Again, Love asked for help. But it was useless. “No, I can’t
take you with me. I am so sad. I want to be by myself.”
When Happiness passed by a few minutes later, Love again called for help. But Happiness was
so happy that it hardly cared about anyone else.
Love was growing worried and hopeless. Just then somebody called out, “Come, Love, I will
take you with me.” Love did not know who was being so kind, but jumped onto the boat happily.
After getting off the boat, Love met Knowledge. Love asked, “Knowledge, do you know who
was so kind to give me a lift when no one else wished to help?”
Knowledge smiled, “Oh, that was Time.”

Decisions, decisions! Our lives are full of them, from the small ones to the life-changing. The
right to choose is central to everyone. Yet sometimes we make bad decisions that leave us unhappy
or full of regret. Can science help?
Most of us know little about the mental processes(心理历程)that lie behind our decisions.
Luckily, what psychologists are finding may help us all make better choices. Here are some of
their amazing discoveries to help you make up your mind. Consider your emotions(情感). You
might think that emotions are the enemy of decision-making, but in fact they are a part of it.
Whenever you make up your mind, your brain’s emotional centre is active. University of Southern
California scientist, Antonio Damasia, has studied people with damage (损伤) to only the
emotional parts of their brains, and found that they were unable to make basic choices about what
to wear or eat. Damasia thinks this may be because our brains store emotional memories of past
choice, which we use to help the present decision-making.
However, making choices under the influence of an emotion can greatly affect the result. Take
anger for example. A study by Nitika Garg of the University of Mississippi and other scientists
found the angry shoppers were more likely to choose the first thing they were offered rather than
considering other choices. It seems that anger can lead us to make quick decisions without much
thinking.
All emotions affect our thinking and motivation(动机),so it may be best to avoid making
important decisions under their influence. Yet strangely there is one emotion that seems to help us
make good choices. The American researchers found that sad people took time to consider the
various choices on offer, and ended up making the best choices. In fact many studies show that
people who feel unhappy have the most reasonable view of the world.
51. What does the underlined word “central” mean?
   A. in the middle B. easy to reach
   C. important D. having power
52. Damasia’s study suggests that ________.
   A. emotions are the enemy of decision-making.
   B. our brain has nothing to do with decision-making.
   C. people with physical damage find it hard to make up their minds.
D.our emotional memories of past choices can affect present decisions.
53. According to the text, what may help us make better decisions?
   A. To think about happy times.
   B. To make many decisions at a time.
   C. To stop feeling regretful about the past.
   D. To learn about the process of decision-making.
54. Why are angry shoppers more likely to choose the first thing they are offered?
   A. They often forget their past choices.
   B. They make decisions without much thinking.
   C. They tend to save time when shopping.
   D. They are too angry to bargain.
55. What do we learn from the text?
   A. Emotions are a part of decision-making.
B. Sad people always make worse choices.
   C. No emotion seems to help us make good choices.
   D. Only sad feelings affect our thinking and motivation.

1. W: Excuse me. What’s the time, please?
  M: It’s half past three.
  W: Thank you.
2. W: Would you like to come to my birthday party tomorrow evening?
M: I’m sorry, I will be in Shanghai then.
3. W: What will the weather be like tomorrow?
M: The radio says there will be a heavy rain.
4. M: Shall we go to the restaurant to have dinner?
  W: It’s a good idea. Let’s go.
5. W: Do you like your new teacher?
M: He’s all right. The only problem is that he never stops talking.
W: Excuse me. What’s the best way for me to get to the Palace Hotel? Subway, bus or taxi?
M: Oh, I’d take the bus if I were you.
W: Why’s that?
M: There’s a bus that stops near the hotel. If you take the subway, you’ll have to walk a long
time to find the station. And the taxi is kind of expensive.
W: Oh, OK. So, how long will it take?
M: About thirty minutes, I guess.
W: That’s not so bad.
W: Good morning, sir.
M: Good morning. Did you have a good time during the holidays? Are you glad to be at school?
W: Yes, I’m very glad to be back and begin my lessons again. I want to improve my English. How
can I do it, sir?
M: You must try to talk in English as much as possible. Don’t simply say “Yes” or “No” and then
stop. You can’t learn to talk if you never talk, can you?
W: No, but I always worry about making mistakes.
M: Don’t worry about mistakes. First of all, learn the new words by heart. Learn the whole
sentence, not just single words. Another thing, don’t be afraid to talk. Just try to say what you
want to say, and don’t be afraid that people will laugh at you. The more you talk, the fewer
mistakes you will make.
W: Thank you, I’ll do as you say.

Nowadays more and more people like sports and exercise. But different age groups will have
their own ways. Here’s the result of a survey from a city in the USA .
In the survey, there are six activities: swimming, bicycling, soccer, tennis, walking and yoga.
And there are five different age groups: children, teens, young adults, middle-aged people and
older people. Got it?
Listen carefully and tick the squares according to the listening materials.
Children like to play with water in hot days. So swimming has been one of their favorite
sports in summer. And so do the teens. Also, most of the teens and young adults rush off to school
and work every day, so that bicycling is a convenient choice to them. And also the teens and
young adults like soccer and tennis to keep them strong. Except children, the other four groups
like walking, especially the older people. They regard walking as their daily exercise. Besides,
some of the middle-aged women take great pleasure in yoga. They believe that yoga can lift spirits
and build confidence.
Experts are sure that sports and exercise give people fitness and make them feel good. But
they still don’t know if sports and exercise can make people smart.
