A small bowl bought at a yard sale in Connecticut for just $35 has been identified as a rare 15thcentury
Chinese antique.
The blueandwhite bowl was made by China's royal court during the Ming Dynasty. It is now
expected to sell for up to $500,000, according to Sotheby's auction (拍卖) house in New York, where the
auction will take place next month.
The purchase was made last year near New Haven, Connecticut.“I was just hanging around there
aimlessly. But when I saw this bowl, I didn't even bargain over the $35 asking price,” the owner said.
Shortly after the purchase, he sent photos of the bowl to auction specialists, who identified it as an item of
historical significance.
Upon closer inspection, the artifact was found to have originated from the period of the Yongle
Emperor, who ruled from 1402 to 1424—a period noted for its distinctive porcelain (瓷器) techniques. It's now
valued between $300,000 and $500,000, with the top estimate nearly 14,300 times the amount it was
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂purchased for.
“I was deeply attracted by the techniques. You can see why this bowl is so highlyvalued from the very
smooth porcelain body, silky glaze (釉料) and special blue colouring, which were never reproduced in later
dynasties,”McAteer, an auction specialist, said.
“The Yongle Emperor improved the porcelain techniques and elevated the importance of porcelain from
being an ordinary bowl into a true work of art. This small bowl has both practical and artistic value,” McAteer
said.
1.What can we infer about the bowl's owner?
A.He found the bowl by accident.
B.He hesitated during the purchase.
C.He doubted whether the bowl was real.
D.He bought the bowl because it was cheap.
2.What makes the bowl so precious?

The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children,
concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck_a_chord_with many young Chinese who are eager to
take a pause to breathe in this fastpaced and highlycompetitive society.
Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂work stress, family disputes (纠纷) and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said
they hate the “involution (内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than
get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’of struggles, endurance and sacrifice to bear the
stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar.“It is
no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressure from childraising to paying the mortgage
(按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of millennials and generation Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to
be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a
short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese young people
have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down
is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of
morale (士气) far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have
rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,”a postgraduate student told
the Global Times. “It's no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”
5.What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Warned. B.Criticized.
C.Touched. D.Amused.
6.What might have caused the “lying down” lifestyle among the young?
A.Improvements in living conditions.
B.Growing pressure from family and social life.
C.Increasing material possessions from families.
D.Temporary adjustment to failure in competitions.
7.What's the scholar's attitude toward the “lying down” group?
A.Understanding. B.Intolerant.
C.Supportive. D.Unclear.
8.What can be inferred about the young generation from the passage?
A.They never really drop their responsibilities.
B.They really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle.

D.They would rather escape than take challenges.

(2009·江西·高考真题) New archaeological discovers suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the
Silk Road probably began in some form many countries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a
widening range of scientific and historical research, could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.
The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about
1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously
thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps
a million years to the migration of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC when an
agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission (使命) across the desert into the
remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back
knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians
have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have
been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers, China and Rome.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to the Parthians of old Persia in exchange for
acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets of Rome.
But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West long before the Han
emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of
world trade and provide insights into the mystery of just how and when Europe and the Mediterranean lands first
became aware of the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.
1.The word “coupled” in the first paragraph could best be replaced by ______.
A.produced B.contributed C.doubled D.combined

B.trade along the Silk Road began earlier than once thought
C.historical research often achieves fascinating results

3.Until recently most historians believed that trade along the Silk Road _______.
A.originated in the 2nd century BC
B.extended human migration into eastern Asia
C.began a million years ago
D.primarily benefited the Egyptians
4.Historians have always considered Zhang Qian’s mission important because they believe ______.
A.he brought back knowledge of Rome to the emperor B.he discovered the Silk Road

(2022·河南洛阳·二模)Song Lam, or Waiata to some of her New Zealand Maori friends, argues that
Mandarin and Maori have much in common, particularly the five vowels(元音) which sound the same in both
languages. And the mythological(神话) figure Maui of Maori legend has a Chinese “twin brother”, the Monkey
King. Both could turn themselves into any shape or figure at any time.
Some academics claim that one of the native tribes in Taiwan, China speaks a language similar to Maori,

younger boy, aged 10, used his skill at drawing to contribute an historic map of Maori tribes in New Zealand.

“My book will be a good gift when I visit a Maori community.”

(2022·浙江·模拟预测)In the traditional religions of Africa, life doesn’t end with death. ____ 1 ___ Some
