Google and Facebook are gateways to the Internet for almost every Australian, so news companies have no
choice but to share their news through these Internet platforms. That benefits publishers when the platforms send
readers back to news websites. The platforms also benefit from these news readers by selling advertising (广告).
They also collect large amounts of data from these readers, which helps them become even more important in the
advertising market.
The Australian government thinks that the platforms benefit far more and that their market power means news

ability of traditional media to continue to play an important role in society.
Google and Facebook have to follow the rules made by the Australian government and pay money to news
companies if they continue to run in Australia and feature news content ( 内容) on their platforms. But the
government doesn't tell Google and Facebook how much they have to pay. It is hoped that the platforms can discuss
with news companies by themselves. If no agreement is reached, an arbitrator (仲裁人) will be appointed. Each
side should give a final offer and the arbitrator will choose the offer that can make both sides feel fair.
Instead of making up for the loss of advertising income of news companies, the aim of the rules is to support
more equal payment for the benefits the platforms receive from news. Google and Facebook both pay publishers for
the news in the US. But in Australia, Facebook says that it will remove all news from Australian Facebook pages if
it has to follow the rules. And Google says the rules that require it to give news companies the user behavior data
will make users feel unsafe and unsatisfied. Both of the platforms think that they are likely to lose huge gains in the
future.

一、阅读理解
(2022·浙江·高考真题)The United States rose to global power on the strength of its technology, and the
lifeblood that technology has long been electricity. By providing long-distance communication and energy,
electricity created the modem world. Yet properly understood, the age of electricity is merely the second stage in
the age of steam, which began a century earlier.
"It is curious that no one has put together a history of both the steam and electric revolutions." writes Maury
Klein in his book The Power Makers, Steam, Electricity, and the Men Invented Modem America. Klein, a noted
historian of technology, spins a narrative so lively that at times it reads like a novel.
The story begins in the last years of the 18th century in Scotland, where Watt perfected "the machine that
changed the world". Klein writes, "America did not invent the steam engine, but once they grasped its passwords
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂they put it to more uses than anyone else. "
Meanwhile, over the course of 19th century, electricity went from mere curiosity to a basic necessity. Morse
invented a code for sending messages over an electromagnetic circuit. Bell then gave the telegraph a voice. Edison
perfected an incandescent bulls that brought electric light into the American home.
Most importantly, Edison realized that success depended on mass electrification, which he showed in New
York City. With help from Tesla, Westinghouse's firm developed a system using alternating current, which soon
became the major forms of power delivery.
To frame his story, Klein creates the character of Ned, a fictional witness to the progress brought about by the
steams and electric revolutions in America during one man's lifetime. It's a technique that helps turn a long
narrative into an interesting one.
1.What is Klein's understanding of the age of electricity?
A.It is closely linked to the steam age.
B.It began earlier than proper thought.
C.It is a little-studied period of history.
D.It will come to an end sooner or later.
2.What can be inferred about Ned?
A.He was born in New York City. B.He wrote many increasing stories,
C.He created an electricity company. D.He lived mainly in the 19th century.
3.What is the text?
A.A biography. B.A book review. C.A short story. D.A science report.

二、七选五
(2019·浙江·高考真题)Some people are so rude. Who sends an e-mail or a text message that just says
“Thank you?” Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on the
Internet? ______4______
Maybe I’m the rude one for not appreciating life’s little courtesies(礼节). But many social norms(规范) just
don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication.
Take the thank-you note. Daniel Post Senning, a coauthor of Emily Post’s Etiquette, asked, “At what point
does showing appreciation outweigh the cost?”
_____5_____ Think of how long it takes to listen to one of those messages. In texts, you don’t have to declare
who you are or even say hello. E-mail, too, is slower than a text. The worst are those who leave a voice mail and
then send an e-mail message to tell you they left a voice mail.
This isn’t the first time technology has changed our manners, ____6____ Alexander Graham Bell, the
inventor, suggested that people say, " Ahoy! "Finally, hello won out, and the victory sped up the greeting's use in
face-to-face communications.
In the age of the smart phone, there is no reason to ask once-acceptable questions about:the weather forecast, a
business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, or an office, which can be easily found on a digital
map. _____7_____ And when you answer, they respond with a thank-you e-mail.
How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones,
appreciate a thank-you message. ____8____ In traditional societies, the young learn from the old. But in modern
societies, the old can also learn from the young. Here's hoping that politeness never goes out of fashion but that
time-wasting forms of communication do.
A.Then there is voice mail.
B.Others, like me, want no reply.

D.Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?
E. Won't new technology bring about changes in our daily life?

G. When the telephone was invented, people didn't know how to greet a caller.
