A small bowl bought at a yard sale in Connecticut for just $35 has been identified as a rare 15thcentury
Chinese antique.
The blueandwhite bowl was made by China's royal court during the Ming Dynasty. It is now
expected to sell for up to $500,000, according to Sotheby's auction (拍卖) house in New York, where the
auction will take place next month.
The purchase was made last year near New Haven, Connecticut.“I was just hanging around there
aimlessly. But when I saw this bowl, I didn't even bargain over the $35 asking price,” the owner said.
Shortly after the purchase, he sent photos of the bowl to auction specialists, who identified it as an item of
historical significance.
Upon closer inspection, the artifact was found to have originated from the period of the Yongle
Emperor, who ruled from 1402 to 1424—a period noted for its distinctive porcelain (瓷器) techniques. It's now
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂valued between $300,000 and $500,000, with the top estimate nearly 14,300 times the amount it was
purchased for.
“I was deeply attracted by the techniques. You can see why this bowl is so highlyvalued from the very
smooth porcelain body, silky glaze (釉料) and special blue colouring, which were never reproduced in later
dynasties,”McAteer, an auction specialist, said.
“The Yongle Emperor improved the porcelain techniques and elevated the importance of porcelain from
being an ordinary bowl into a true work of art. This small bowl has both practical and artistic value,” McAteer
said.

The idea of low material desire, low consumption and refusing to work, marry and have children,
concluded as a “lying down” lifestyle, recently struck_a_chord_with many young Chinese who are eager to
take a pause to breathe in this fastpaced and highlycompetitive society.
Many millennials (千禧一代) and generation Zs complained to the Global Times that burdens, including
work stress, family disputes (纠纷) and financial strains, have pushed them “against the wall”. They said
they hate the “involution (内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than
get trapped in an endless competition against peers.
“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’of struggles, endurance and sacrifice to bear the
stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar.“It is
no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressure from childraising to paying the mortgage
(按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”
Interestingly, the majority of millennials and generation Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to
be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a
short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese young people
have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down
is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of
morale (士气) far beyond their reach.
“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have
rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,”a postgraduate student told
the Global Times. “It's no use running away. I have to ‘stand up’ and face the reality sooner or later.”

New archaeological discovers suggest that trade between Europe and Asia along the
Silk Road probably began in some form many countries earlier than once thought. The findings, coupled with a
widening range of scientific and historical research, could add a fascinating new page to the epic of the Silk Road.
The latest and most surprising discovery is pieces of silk found in the hair of an Egyptian mummy from about
1000 BC, long before regular traffic on the Silk Road and at least one thousand years before silk was previously
thought to be used in Egypt. Other research may extend human activity along this route back even further, perhaps
a million years to the migration of human ancestors into eastern Asia.
The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late 2nd century BC when an
agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission (使命) across the desert into the
remote high country of Central Asia. The agent, Zhang Qian, travelled as far as Afghanistan and brought back
knowledge of even more distant lands such as Persia, Syria and a place known as Lijien, perhaps Rome. Historians
have called this one of the most important journeys in ancient times. His journey opened the way for what have
been thought to be the first indirect contacts between the ancient world’s two superpowers, China and Rome.
Chinese silk, first traded to central Asian tribes for war horses and to the Parthians of old Persia in exchange for
acrobats and ostrich eggs, was soon finding its way through a network of merchants to the luxury markets of Rome.
But the new discoveries show that Chinese silk was apparently present in the West long before the Han
emperor started organized trade over the Silk Road. The research could change thinking about the early history of
world trade and provide insights into the mystery of just how and when Europe and the Mediterranean lands first
became aware of the glorious culture at the other end of Eurasia.
1.The word “coupled” in the first paragraph could best be replaced by ______.
A.produced B.contributed C.doubled D.combined

A.Egyptians had probably travelled to China to buy silk
B.trade along the Silk Road began earlier than once thought

New archaeological discovers suggest that trade between Europe and Asia
along the Silk Road probably began in some form many countries earlier than once thought.(新的考古发现表明,

The official origin of East-West commerce along the road is usually placed in the late
2nd century BC when an agent of the Chinese Emperor Wu-di returned from a dangerous secret mission (使命)

Mandarin and Maori have much in common, particularly the five vowels(元音) which sound the same in both
languages. And the mythological(神话) figure Maui of Maori legend has a Chinese “twin brother”, the Monkey
King. Both could turn themselves into any shape or figure at any time.
Some academics claim that one of the native tribes in Taiwan, China speaks a language similar to Maori,

the peoples of Australasia and Taiwan, with the native language of Taiwan having similarities to the prehistoric
Australasian language.
Confused by Maori place names and customs when she first moved to New Zealand, Song Lam spent eight
years researching and three years writing her book, The Maori of New Zealand, which is believed to be the first
Chinese-language publication to include Maori words, values and customs. The 120-page book, including 10 pages
of photos and maps, descbribes Maori legends, traditions, history and folk tales.
Song Lam was inspired to write the book in 1990 when she tried to sign up for an education course in New
Zealand and was asked for her comments on a local historical event, which she knew nothing about. She involved
her two sons in her project and research after explaining to them the stories behind Maori place names. The
younger boy, aged 10, used his skill at drawing to contribute an historic map of Maori tribes in New Zealand.
“Both Chinese and Maori like to present a gift when visiting others or receiving warm reception,” Lam says.
“My book will be a good gift when I visit a Maori community.”

In the traditional religions of Africa, life doesn’t end with death. ____ 1 ___ Some
African groups believe these spirits dwell (栖居) underground in a world much like that of the living—but upside

the family and their traditions. ____ 3 ____ But they punish people if certain ceremonies have not been performed
properly or if there are some violations of community laws.
____ 4 ____ For example, the people of Buganda in present-day Uganda say that their first ancestor was Kintu,

1.根据“In the traditional religions of Africa, life doesn’t end with death. (在非洲的传统宗教中,生命不会以
死亡而结束)”以及“ Some African groups believe these spirits dwell (栖居) underground in a world much like
that of the living—but upside down.(一些非洲团体认为,这些灵魂居住在一个非常类似于生活但颠倒的世界
B项中的“After death”和前文的“end with death”相呼应。故选B。
2.根据“Among the spirits, the ancestors comprise a special category of their own. (在这些灵魂中,祖先构成
了他们自己的一个特殊类别)”以及“To become an ancestor is the best that one can hope for after death.
A项中“As ancestors”和上下文的
“ancestors”相呼应。故选A。
But they punish people if certain ceremonies have not been performed properly or if there are some
For example, the people of Buganda in present-day Uganda say that their first ancestor was Kintu, who
came from the land of the gods and married Nambe, daughter of the king of heaven. Another example is the Dinkas
of Sudan, who believe they are descended from Garang and Abuk, the first man and woman created by God as tiny

5.根据“Another example is the Dinkas of Sudan, who believe they are descended from Garang and Abuk, the
first man and woman created by God as tiny clay figures in a pot.
G项中的“also subjects of tales and legends”和前文“the first man
and woman created by God as tiny clay figures in a pot”相呼应。故选G。
