10. (we).

Illegally traded endangered species that escape, forming secondary populations, offer hope to their long-
term survival, a study suggests. “This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the
seizure (捕获) of an illegal shipment of 23 yellowcrested cockatoos,” said Luke Gibson, a college teacher.
He learned that the species was critically endangered, which surprised him.
This encouraged Dr. Gibson and his colleagues to investigate how a critically endangered species had
become selfsustaining outside of its natural range. They discovered 49 cases of a globally threatened
species becoming established as a separate population, including the yellowcrested cockatoo in their city.
“This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade,” he told BBC News.
“Poachers (偷猎者) go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the birds and then
ship them off, usually up to our city where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has
fueled the decline of this species in its native range. But it's really interesting because that same cause also
had another effect: some of the people who were keeping this species here accidentally or intentionally released
them.” As a result of enough of the birds being set free, it allowed a new selfsustaining population to be
established in this city.
The government of Dr. Gibson's city has made it illegal to capture the species, even though it is a
nonnative species. Because the city is affluent and relatively well educated, the cases of people breaking
the law are extremely rare, explained Dr. Gibson. Unlike in its native range in Indonesia where capturing
birds forms a major source of income.
However, there can be downsides (缺点) to the newly established population of endangered species, such

“very interesting” opportunity for conservationists, Dr. Gibson suggested. This would involve “harvesting”
some of the newly established secondary population, which may provide a way to help slow global
biodiversity loss.

Kazakhstan announced plans to bring wild tigers back to their historical range in the IliBalkhash region, and
signed an agreement with World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF) to conduct a tiger reintroduction program. “It
will not only bring wild tigers back to their ancestral home, but also protect the unique ecosystem of the Ili-
Balkhash region , ” said Askar Myrzakhmetov , the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of
Kazakhstan.
If successful, Kazakhstan will be the first country in the world to bring wild tigers back to an entire
region where they have died out for nearly half a century. Tiger reintroduction projects have only been achieved
within national borders and in areas that are considered current tiger habitats.Kazakhstan's tiger reintroduction
program is unique and it desperately requires the restoration of a vast forest that is part of the wild tiger's historical
range.
Since the beginning of the 20th century, wild tigers have lost over 90 percent of their historical
range. Wild tigers have completely disappeared from the region since the late 1940s,due to the loss of
habitat. To prepare for the return of wild tigers, on 1st January 2018 Kazakhstan will set up a new
nature reserve in the southwestern IliBalkhash, in order to restore the unique forest habitat. This will
include the protection of existing wildlife, and reintroducing important prey (猎物), such as the endangered
wild Bactrian deer.
Restoring tigers will also help protect Lake Balkhash and prevent it from repeating the fate of the
Aral Sea, formerly the world's fourth largest lake and now 10 percent of its original size. “The hard work
remains ahead of us. We have to spare no effort to make this region ready for tigers and involve all stakeholders(利

Nola is a 41yearold northern white rhino (犀牛) that lives at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido,
California. She is one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world, and the only one in the
western part of the earth. The other three live in Kenya.
Rhinos have lived on earth for more than 40 million years, but they are now at the risk of dying
out. Hunters illegally hunt rhinos for their horns (角), which are used for art, jewelry and decorations.
They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, though it is not allowed by law. Rhino horns are
also prized as a key part in traditional medicine, even though scientific tests have proven that the horns cannot
cure illnesses. Experts say that every eight hours, one rhino will be hunted.
Scientists are trying to find ways to prevent rhinos from dying out. In 1975, the San Diego Zoo Institute
for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo, a program through which researchers have collected
cell samples (细胞样品) from more than 8,000 different animal species until now, including the northern
white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will gain greater understanding of the
species, and will find ways to increase its number.
Jeanne Loring works with the Frozen Zoo. Loring's research focuses on pluripotent stem cells, which are
cells that can renew and become any cell type. Coloring's lab at TSRI is working together with scientist
Oliver Ryder of the San Diego Zoo to use pluripotent stem cells to try to increase the number of the
northern white rhino. Loring said the goal is to start producing new rhinos through this method over the next couple
of years.

A. growing生长;B. migrating迁移;C. competing竞争;D. disappearing消失。根
据第一句“Wildlife has been greatly threatened in the modern age”和最后一句提到的“…the species from going
A. ban禁止;B. save挽救,保护;C. split分裂;D. remove移除。
A. abortion堕胎;B. recreation娱乐;C. reproduction繁殖;D. administration管理。
A. care照顾;B. eye眼睛;C. mind思想;D. story故事。
故选A。
A. found发现;B. chosen选择;C. raised抚养;D. seized抓住。
A. bonus奖金;B. consequence结果;C. victory胜利;D. sacrifice牺牲。
A. never从未;B. always总是;C. unluckily不幸运地;D. cheerfully愉快地。根据
下文中的“become deeply attached to humans...even ...killing some of them”等内容可知,因为Emma一直由人
故选A。
A. liked喜欢;B. refused拒绝;C. decided拒绝;D. hesitated犹豫。
A. gift礼物;B. skill技巧;C. concern涉及;D. reputation名声。根据even(甚
D. impossible
A. Therefore因此;B. Moreover而且;C. However然而;D.
A. combination结合;B. collection收集;C. strategy策略;D. system体系。
A. forced强迫;B. forbade禁止;C. taught教;D. enabled使能够。
enable sb. to do sth.
A. list清单;B. rise上升;C. agenda议程;D. decline下降。
A. In contrast相反;B. After all毕竟;C. By the way顺便问一下;D. On the
