An expert has revealed whether carrots truly help you see in the dark and if an apple a day actually keeps the
doctor away.
Nutritionist Lily Soutter also clarifies if it really takes seven years to digest chewing gum (口香糖), whether
you can swim after eating and if fish is good for the brain.
She confirms that while carrots contain lots of vitamin A, which helps maintain healthy vision, they don’t help
you see any better in the dark. Similarly, enjoying an apple a day won’t in itself reduce your chances of needing to
visit a doctor, and chewing gum doesn’t take seven years to leave your system. And sadly, eating celery (芹菜)
doesn’t burn more calories than you gain from eating it, despite 23 percent believing it to be the case.
Yogurt maker Onken teamed up with Lily. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people, finding half of them are
“confused” about food fact and fiction.Onken said, “Many of us rely on what we remember from school when it comes to nutrition. But we’re
learning new things all the time about what different foods do for our health, such as the benefit of fermented (发酵
的) foods to our gut and immune system. While some of what’s passed down over generations is super advice,
some of it isn’t.”
The study also found that swimming right after eating is wrongly believed by 34 percent of adults to be
something you shouldn’t do. In fact, it’s exercising to high intensity immediately after eating that should be
avoided, as it can give you a sudden pain.
Almost half believe fish is good for the brain. They’re right, as long as they’re eating oily fish, because
essential omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish contribute to normal brain function. Other “fake news” wrongly believed
by many of those surveyed include eating chicken soup helps if you have a cold (27%) and drinking fruit juice is as
healthy as eating whole fruit (17%).
8. What can we learn about Lily Soutter’s findings?
A. An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
B. Eating celery surely helps us lose weight.
C. Eating carrots contributes to healthy vision.
D. Carrots help us see things better in the dark.
9. Why is Onken mentioned in the text?
A. To appeal to more people to find right food facts.
B. To inform people of the benefit of fermented foods.
C. To prove there are many makers working with Lily.
D. To point out many people’s mistaken nutrition ideas.
10. What attitude should we take to the nutrition ideas passed down over generations?
A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Cautious.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Learning New Things Is Vital to Health
B. How to Fight “Fake News” About Health
C. Welcome to the Most Popular Food Myths
D. Nutritionist Reveals Truth About Food Myths
C 9. D 10. D 11. D

Yogurt maker Onken teamed up with Lily. They conducted a survey of 2,000 people,

It’s the start of a new era of AI at Google, says CEO Sundar Pichai: the Gemini era. Gemini is Google’s latest
large language model, which Pichai first mentioned at the I/O developer conference in June and is now releasing to
the public. This significant advance in AI will ultimately impact almost all of Google’s products.
Gemini is more than a single AI model. There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano meant for offline Android
devices, a more powerful version called Gemini Pro that will power many Google AI services, and an even more
capable model called Gemini Ultra — the most powerful LLM (大语言模型) Google has yet created. It seems to be
mostly designed for data centers and enterprise applications.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022. Now Google is ready to fight back. “We’ve done a very thorough analysis of
the systems side by side,” says CEO Sundar Pichai. Google ran 32 well- established criteria comparing the two
models, from overall tests to the Python code generation. “I think we’re substantially (大量地) ahead on 30 out of 32
of those criteria.” he adds.
Gemini’s clearest advantage comes from its ability to understand and interact with video and audio. This was by
design: multi- modality has been part of the plan from the beginning. Google built one multi- sensory model from
the beginning, unlike OpenAI’s separate models for images and voice.
Right now, Gemini’s most basic models are text- based , but more advanced models like Gemini Ultra can work
with images, video, and audio. “Over time,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says, “Gemini will gain more
senses, become more aware, accurate, and grounded. These models just sort of understand better about the world
around them.” These models still have other problems, but Hassabis says they will improve as they learn more.
12. What is Gemini according to the text?
A. A new language model in development.
B. A light AI model designed for offline use.C. A new language model developed by Google.
D. A light AI model created for specific enterprise applications.
13. What does Gemini Nano specialize in?
A. Generating Python code.
B. Running on offline Android devices.
C. Powering Google AI services.
D. Training separate models for images and voice.
14. What is a key advantage of Gemini over OpenAI’s ChatGPT?
A. The ability to write Pyth on code.
B. The ability to work with video and audio.
C. The understanding and interaction with textual data.
D. The ability to create separate models for images and voice.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Google will bring the most advanced models.
B. Gemini models outperform OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
C. Google will still work on the perfection of Gemini models.
D. Gemini models are launched without even a slight imperfection.
C 13. B 14. B 15. C

Why dogs chase their tails? There are some answers to this question, which might surprise you. While tail
chasing can be a harmless behavior, sometimes it can indicate a potential issue requiring a vet visit. Below are some
common meanings behind your dog chasing its tail.
____16____
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a
little fun. ____17____ Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling left out, so make
sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.
Your dog is feeling stressed.
On the other hand, uncontrollable tail- chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is anxious or
stressed. ____18____ By the way, this fruitless and frustrating behavior is what led to the saying “like a dog chasing
its tail”.
Your dog wants your attention.
Tail- chasing is actually a go- to behavior for young dogs who are playing and learning about their bodies. And
it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s funny and adorable. But this
type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it. Try not to encourage this behavior. ____19____
Your dog may have intestinal parasites
This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too.
Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated. ____20____ If
your dog is chasing their tail a lot, it’s best to rule out any medical issues first, so always get in touch with your vet
who will be able to examine them and find the root of the problem.
A. Your dog wants exercise.
B. Your dog is expressing its emotion.
C. Your pup will form the habit of tail chasing.
D. Instead, provide a distraction by giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.
E. Find out what’s at the root of your dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.
F. Common types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.
G. If a dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.
B 17. G 18. E 19. D 20.
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is
a simple way for dogs to let loose and have a little fun.(这对人类来说可能是一种奇怪的活动,但对狗来说,追
Just keep in mind that a constantly bored or stressed dog might
be feeling left out, so make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.(只要记住,一
所以,B项“Your dog is expressing its emotion.(你的狗在
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail- chasing is a simple way for dogs
to let loose and have a little fun.(这对人类来说可能是一种奇怪的活动,但对狗来说,追尾巴是一种简单的放
dog doesn’t have anything or anyone to play with, it might need to entertain itself.(如果一只狗没有任何东西或任
On the other hand, uncontrollable tail- chasing behavior could be a warning sign that your
dog is anxious or stressed.(另一方面,无法控制的追尾行为可能是你的狗焦虑或有压力的警告信号。)”可知,
追尾巴表明你的狗可能焦虑或有压力,这种情况下应该怎样做呢?E项“Find out what’s at the root of your
dog’s anxiety and then address that problem.(找出你的狗焦虑的根源,然后解决这个问题。)”
And it’s hard not to smile when you see this happening, especially in puppies, because it’s
funny and adorable. But this type of response can cause your pup to keep doing it. Try not to encourage this
giving your dog a new toy or going on a walk.(相反,给你的狗一个新玩具或散散步来分散注意力。)”
根据该部分的主题句“Your dog may have intestinal parasites(你的狗可能有肠道寄生虫)”和空格前的句子
“This is another common reason why dogs chase their tails. It’s also a reason why dogs chew their tails, too.
Infections are generally common in young dogs and can even be deadly in some puppies if left untreated.(这是狗
types of parasites include tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and so on.(常见的寄生虫有绦虫、蛔虫、钩虫

Josie and I wanted a dog more than anything else on the earth. We wished for one every time we threw coins
in a fountain or watched the evening star drop behind the trees. However, our mother believed that we were still too
thoughtless to take on the task of raising a pet. She had witnessed our forgetfulness on household chores and
getting into small conflicts. In her eyes, these were signs that we lacked the necessary responsibility.
One summer night, as we sat together on the roof, Josie saw something. She pointed down toward a dark
shadow, “What’s that?”
For one astonishing second, Josie and I stared at each other. Then we rushed down onto the doorway. There in
our yard stood a black dog. Josie made a little kissing noise and held out her hand. The dog came to us slowly,
taking a few steps forward, then a step back, not sure whether to trust us. She was so skinny that I could just feel
every bone, and her coat was messy.
“We’re going to have a dog!” My inside was full of excitement, just like before Christmas or our birthday.
“What’s a good name?” said Josie.
The perfect name wrote itself in my mind, “Shadow!”
The next day, we piled together all the pocket money we had to buy all kinds of dog foods and hid it in various
places because we were afraid Mom wouldn’t approve that if she knew we were feeding a homeless dog.
That night, after our parents were asleep, we silently slipped downstairs to feed Shadow. We carefully poured
the dog food into the bowl, trying to make as little noise as possible. Shadow, who had been waiting eagerly by our
side, wagged (摇晃) her tail. As we placed the bowl on the floor, a creaking (吱吱的) sound filled the house.
Suddenly, the kitchen light was switched on, illuminating the room and revealing our shocked faces.

______________________________________________________________________________________
It was our mother, standing there surprisingly. Her eyes widened as she saw the scene before her. For
a moment, there was silence, only with the creaking sound still lingering in the air. Stammering, we tried to explain
to her. We told her about how we found Shadow and our longing for a dog, hoping that somehow our mother would
understand it. After a long pause, she finally spoke, “I can see how much you both care for Shadow, and maybe it’s
time for us to give her a home.”
Mom decided to give us a chance to prove we could be responsible owners. From that day on, we poured our
hearts into taking care of Shadow. We woke up early every morning to take her for walks and diligently cleaned up
after her. Gradually, Shadow transformed before our eyes. Her coat became shiny and healthy, and she gained
weight. She followed us everywhere like a second shadow. Not only had we achieved our dream of having a dog,
we had also earned our mother’s trust and respect.
