C Every runner is unique, and a shoe that works for one might trip up another. Outside of trying on different designs, there’s no quick and easy way to know which shoe best suits a person’s particular running style. MIT engineersarehopingtochangethatwithanewmodelwhichintegratesaperson’sheight, weight, andothergeneral dimensions, alongwithshoepropertiessuchashardness.Withthisinput, themodelthensimulates(模拟)aperson’ srunninggait(步法)inaparticularshoe. While the model can accurately simulate changes in a person’s running gait when comparing two very different shoe types, it is quite futile when comparing relatively similar designs, including most commercially available running shoes. For this reason, the researchers believe the current model could just be used as a tool for shoedesignerslookingtopushtheboundariesofshoedesign. Theteamisplanningtoimprovethemodel, inhopesthatconsumerscanonedayuseasimilarversiontopick shoesthatfittheirpersonalrunningstyle.“We’llallowforenoughflexibilityinthemodelsothatitcanbeusedto understand different individual behaviors,” says Sarah Fay, an MIT researcher. “Way down the road, we imagine that if you send us a video of yourself running, we could 3D print the shoe that's right for you. If left unaddressed, in a few decades, it will account for over 10 percent of the total man-made emissions. A new study from MIT researchers reveals a practical solution to this problem. During their study, the researchers turned recycled soda cans into small aluminum balls. They pretreated the aluminum balls with a rare-metal alloy (合⾦) that effectively purifies aluminum, making it into a pure form that can react with seawater to generate hydrogen. The salt ions (离⼦) in the seawater can in turn attract and recover thealloy, whichcanbereusedtogeneratemorehydrogen.Theteamfoundthatthisreactionsuccessfullyproduced hydrogengas, thoughslowly. They experimented with different chemicals including the ones that are typically found in kitchens and realized that adding coffee made a difference. “A low concentration of caffeine is enough to produce the same amountofhydrogeninjustfiveminutes, comparedtotwohourswithoutit,”thestudyauthorsnote.“Thenextpart istofigureouthowtousethisfortrucks, trains, andmaybeairplanes,”AlyKombargi, leadstudyauthor, said. 32.HowcantheMITresearcherscontributetotheshippingindustry?
