Carl Allamby started his car repair business at the tender age of 19. Over the years, it had grown into two
shops with 11 workers, but Allamby had become uneasy, longing for something more. Therefore, at the age of 34,
he decided to go for his bachelor's degree in business management.
After taking classes part- time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his
degree, which later turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Biology classes reawakened a childhood
dream that he had hidden somewhere deep within himself.
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home
goods door-to-door. His school didn't offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学
预科的) path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just
for being the class nerd (讨厌的人) ,” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started
fixing cars instead.
But a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class at age 39. He was ready to live his dream. With the
support of his family he soon decided to skip business school to take science classes. Becoming a doctor was late
and he would become a nurse instead, he reasoned. But Allamby's chemistry professor told him “Why not a doctor?
You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way. ” The professor was right and Allamby did very well.
In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019,
Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.
“How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life? ” he said. “My age and
past career are all good reasons why I shouldn't be here. And yet, here I am.”
4. What is the author's purpose in writing Para. 3?
A. To describe Allamby's advantages in school.
B. To explain why Allamby once gave up his dream.
C. To introduce Allamby's family background.
D. To show how Allamby stood out in his childhood.
5. What do we know from the chemistry professor's words?
A. He recognized Allamby's ability. B. He appreciated Allamby's courage.
C. He suggested Allamby should aim lower. D. He thought Allamby was too old to be a doctor.
6. Why was taking biology “the best thing that ever happened” to Allamby?
A. It ensured him a bachelor's degree. B. It developed his potential to become a doctor.
C. It satisfied his childhood curiosity about doctors. D. It brought about positive change in his life.
7. What does Allamby's story mainly tell us?
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Education holds the key to success.
C. It's never too late to pursue your dream. D. A tough man can bear great suffering.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a
father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn't offer the advanced science classes that might have led
him on a premed (医学预科的) path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get
into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd (讨厌的人) ,” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of
becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead.
Allamby
Allamby
But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him ”Why not a doctor? You have a great
talent for the work. You will go a long way.”
A 项。
In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical
University. In 2019, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland
Allamby
How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life?”
he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”
C
What if you could meet most of your daily needs-shopping, work, education, healthcare-within a 15-minute
walk or bike ride from your home? This is the exciting vision of the “15-minute city”, an urban planning concept
that gained global attention years ago. However, putting it into practice has sparked unexpected and fierce
opposition.
The concept was popularized by Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris and based on the research of French scholar
Carlos Moreno. It suggests a move from city planning centered mainly on cars to one focused on
“chronic-urbanism”. The goal is to return urban space to people, with more parks and streets for walking.
Advocates argue that this model addresses multiple crises all at the same time: climate change, social isolation, and
public health.
Despite its apparent benefits, opponents have misrepresented the idea online, framing it as a secret government
plan to control people’s free movement. While these claims are baseless, they have gained support, influencing
public opinion and making it harder for cities like Oxford and Melbourne to carry out the concept.
The real issue, however, goes deeper than misinformation. It points to a fundamental problem in urban
innovation: the difficulty of imagining a life less dependent on the private car. For decades, the car has symbolized
personal freedom and status. Any policy that seems to reduce car use, even if it aims to enhance overall quality of
life, can make people feel emotionally upset. This reflects what transport experts call “car dependency”, a cultural
and deep-rooted habit that is hard to break.
The situation mirrors past urban conflicts. For instance, many people opposed creating walking-only streets in
city centers decades ago, but now, such areas are mostly loved and valued. The experts of a recent study on
sustainable transition conclude that the battle for the 15-minute city is not just about planning; it’s about messaging.
Success depends not only on smart design but also on effectively conveying its vision of a more sustainable and
human urban future.
8. What can we learn about “chronic-urbanism” in paragraph 2?
A. It gives more space to people. B. It aims to expand road networks.
C. It focuses on car development. D. It was created by Carlos Moreno.
9. What do the opponents think of the 15-minute city?
A. Traffic-slowing. B. Money-wasting. C. Freedom-limiting. D. Tech-demanding.
10. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A The challenge of a less car-centered life. B. The significance of private cars.
C. The public’s reactions to a new policy. D. The definition of car dependency.
11. What does the experts’ conclusion imply in the last paragraph?
A. Public opinions are too hard to change. B. Sustainable transition is the top priority.
C. Communication matters as much as design. D. Planning should send an innovative message.
A 9. C 10. A 11. C

It suggests a move from city planning centered mainly on cars to one focused on
“chronic-urbanism”. The goal is to return urban space to people, with more parks and streets for walking.(它主张
故选 A。
Despite its apparent benefits, opponents have misrepresented the idea online, framing
it as a secret government plan to control people’s free movement. While these claims are baseless, they have gained
support, influencing public opinion and making it harder for cities like Oxford and Melbourne to carry out the
The real issue, however, goes deeper than misinformation. It points to a fundamental
problem in urban innovation: the difficulty of imagining a life less dependent on the private car. For decades, the
car has symbolized personal freedom and status. Any policy that seems to reduce car use, even if it aims to enhance
overall quality of life, can make people feel emotionally upset. This reflects what transport experts call “car

故选 A。
The experts of a recent study on sustainable transition conclude that the battle for
the 15-minute city is not just about planning; it’s about messaging. Success depends not only on smart design but

D
Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let’s state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want
to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more
intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this
is not a surprise. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to
the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different
color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that
members of their gender(性别)are “really, really smart.” Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief:
Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.” Can our planet
afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn’t take a genius to know the answer:
Here’s the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we’re all positioned to see
flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like
gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from
those with “intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the
world.”
12. What does the author think of victors’ standards for joining the genius club?
A. They’re unfair. B. They’re conservative.
C. They’re objective. D. They’re strict.
13. What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?
A. They think themselves smart.
B. They look up to great thinkers.
C. They see gender differences earlier than boys.
D. They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs
14. Why are more geniuses known to the public?
A. Improved global communication.
B. Less discrimination against women.
C. Acceptance of victors’ concepts.
D. Changes in people’s social positions.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Geniuses Think Alike B. Genius Takes Many Forms
C. Genius and Intelligence D. Genius and Luck
A 13. D 14. A 15. B
It is said that history is written by victors, and those victors set the standards for
admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club-women, or people of a
different color or belief-they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.(据说历史是由胜利者书写的,而那些
故选 A。
Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief. Around age six they start to
avoid activities said to be for children who are “really, really smart.(更糟糕的是,研究发现女孩们是按照这个信
In a wired world with constant global communication, we’re all positioned to see
故选 A。
“And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not
determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with “intelligence, creativity,
perseverance, and simple geniuses, who are able to change the world.(我们看得越多,就越会发现,像性别、种
Ways to Boost Your Self-Control
Contrary to popular belief, self-control does not come along by denying yourself something or being “strict”
with yourself. It is about loving yourself and developing new habits. ____16____This is how you get there:
Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, act later. When you have knowledge that a
greater reward is at stake (得失难料), you are going to have an easier time letting go of immediate satisfaction.
Prioritize your list according to what you want to achieve in the future. ____17____
Motivate yourself to win and remember that life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. Anxiety arises
from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstances but are a victim of them. ____18____ That
第 11页/共 23页will set the stage for you to regain your power and access your inner motivation to win and achieve.
Know your triggers (诱因) and control the stress response. Certain situations, people or even foods will cause
your stress response to be triggered. Your job is to pay attention. ____19____It could be sleep deprivation, or it
could be a tendency to feel overly criticized by your boss. By knowing your triggers, you can either avoid them or
develop ways to deal with them.
____20____ Either enlist friends or family members to join you or ask for their support to remind you of your
long-term goals. The key here is that no one is allowed to criticize you or cause you to feel guilt or shame. Instead,
they are to remind you to love yourself and help you get back on track when you slip up.
A. Get some reliable partners.
B. Who and what causes you to feel emotional?
C. You should think twice to avoid possible mistakes.
D. Change your mindset to being a victor of your life.
E. It will help you follow your heart and improve your performance.
F. In other words, it is a positive effort, not one of denial or negativity.
G. When following this process, you will think twice before acting on a sudden urge.
F 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. A
Contrary to popular belief, self-control does not come along by denying yourself something or being “strict”
with yourself. It is about loving yourself and developing new habits.
本段第一句“Set clear goals so when it comes down to it, you can think first, act later.
Anxiety arises from the belief that you are not in control of your life circumstances but are a victim of them.
will set the stage for you to regain your power and access your inner motivation to win and achieve.
前文“Your job is to pay attention. 及后文“It could be sleep deprivation, or it
could be a tendency to feel overly criticized by your boss.

I’d loved hip-hop dancing since my childhood, and in high school I took classes that focused on jazz and
hip-hop. Dance was my favorite class, and I looked forward to going every day. And this year, my senior year, was
going to be the best dance class yet. Moreover, there was a showcase performed at our high-school theater at the
第 20页/共 23页end of the semester.
As I headed to the studio, my friend Jessica ran up to me, her face serious. “Sarah, have you heard?” she
whispered. “We have a new teacher, Ms. Barton. And she’s… strictly ballet.”
My excitement disappeared. Ballet? I’d never taken a class in my life. A strong feeling of anxiety formed in
my stomach, but a part of me accepted the challenge. The studio I entered was transformed. Gone was the lively
energy; in its place was a nervous silence. Every other girl wore tight black clothes and ballet shoes. Looking down
at my baggy T-shirt and sports trousers, I felt like a complete outsider. I quickly changed, but still felt awkward and
out of place.
Ms. Barton stood as straight as an arrow, her serious expression making the room feel cold. At the barre, she
began calling out French terms — plié, tendu. I tried to copy the others, my movements feeling awkward and
wrong. “Grand plié,” she ordered. I bent my knees, doing my best to copy the elegant position of the others. I
thought I was doing okay, until the music suddenly stopped. Ms. Barton’s sharp eyes were fixed on me.
“What is your name?” she asked, her voice cutting through the silence. “Sarah,” I replied, trying to manage a
smile. “Class, I want everyone to watch Miss Sarah,” she announced. My heart jumped. Was she going to praise me?
I took a deep breath and performed the grand plié again. Complete silence. Every eye was on me.
“Now, class,” Ms. Barton’s voice rose, sharp and loud. “This is a perfect example of what NOT to do.” My
face burned as if I’d been slammed

Paragraph 1
I spent the rest of the day wondering if I should quit . However, my love for dance wouldn’t allow it. I would
show that teacher. The empty studio became my second home. I practised day by day, week by week, and I was
proud to say that I was still standing by the end of the semester. Ms. Barton seemed to tolerate my ballet and began
to appreciate my hip-hop style. Soon came her surprising request: to design two hip-hop dances for the final
performance.
Paragraph 2
Finally, there came the showcase at our high-school theater. My hands were shaking with nerves, but when the
music began, my fear simply disappeared. I had the best time dancing to it and gave it my all, leaving our audience
cheering and clapping. Afterwards, Ms. Barton announced the “Most Improved Dancer” award. I couldn’t believe
my ears when she called my name! As my friends cheered, I walked up to receive the award. With tears in my eyes,
I smiled at Ms. Barton and said, “Thank you for challenging me.” I realized that this ballet journey had taught me
the courage to embrace challenges.
