The original reason I was going was to 16 community service hours for school. My plan was to 17 go there a few times and get my service hours, but it taught me a lot. The typical volunteer there served 1 8 to people. Basically, I was 19 serving bread and juice to whoever wanted it, which was a simple task. Some of the people were homeless, and some of them were 2 0 families. All of them were people in need of a hot meal and a place to 2 1 for an hour or several minutes. 2 2 some of them looked like they weren’t behaving well, we always took care of them. The first time I went there was right before Christmas. For the people coming to the soup kitchen, it was not exactly a 2 3 time. It made me think about my happy Christmas and made me feel how 24 I was. Unlike them, I have a home and I don’t 25 cold or hunger. At that point, I decided that I 26 wanted to go back there. I couldn’t offer them much, but I could always offer my time and 2 7 . The experience also gives me a feeling of 28 . Whenever I go there , people are 29 that I showed up again . They know my name and they know that I am more than happy to 30 them. It truly feels good to know that you can 31 someone’s day. I've realized that the feeling of doing good for people can be a better 3 2 than any amount of money. You can’t buy that feeling. I have never 33 a single second of my volunteering. It 34 me that dozens of cities have made it illegal to set up a soup kitchen. But I will continue my volunteer work and find more ways to show my 3 5 to people in need. 16. My Brother Is Away (Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe) It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news? And will he still love her? A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings. (For ages 5 to 8) Eyes that Kiss in the Corners (Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho) This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world — and how we see ourselves. (For ages 4 to 8) Rez Dogs (Joseph Bruchac) When COVID-19 hits, Malian is visiting her grandparents. It is in Malian’s grandparents’ stories that she learns how the people of her native community have always taken care of one another. Written in poetry, this book shows us the pandemic through a child’s eyes and helps remind us that responsibility and caring for one another is something we all can do. (For ages 8 to 12) Listen to the Language of the Trees (Tera Kelly, illustrated by Marie Hermansson) If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi that connect their roots. Still, did you know how they support one another with extra food? How they can tell their offspring (后代) apart from other trees? How they can warn other trees when insects attack? Then, consider this outstanding book for kids on the topic. (For ages 4 to 8) 36.Which book is particularly recommended for children who are dealing with family members in difficult situations? A.My Brother Is Away B.Eyes that Kiss in the CornersC.Rez Dogs D.Listen to the Language of the Trees 37.What do My Brather Is Away and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners have in common? A.They both reveal complex feelings. B.They both tell stories through a girl’s eyes. C.They are intended for children of same age. D.They both focus on children’s responsibility. 38.What can we learn about the book Rez Dogs? A.It may attract pre-school children. B.It mainly covers global pandemics. C.It is written in the form of a poem. D.It has pictures related to the pandemic. 39.Which book best suits children who are interested in science? A.My Brother Is Away. B.Eyes that Kiss in the Corners. C.Rez Dogs. D.Listen to the Language of the Trees. 40.Where is the text probably taken from? A. A research paper. B. A magazine. C. A forum. D. A travel journal B In late spring and early summer each year, tens of millions of butterflies come out of their chrysalises (蚕蛹) in the butterfly valley in southwest China’s Yunnan province. For butterfly expert Yang Zhenwen, it is the busiest time of the year, but he greets it with great enthusiasm. Before the break of dawn, Yang has already arrived at the observation point, diligently tending to the needs of the awakening butterflies. “Due to warmer temperatures, the ‘butterfly explosion’ this year — occurred slightly — earlier than usual, and the size of the butterflies is larger than that in previous years,” said 46-year-old Yang, curator (馆长) of the butterfly valley museum. “We expect that there will be about 80 million to 100 million butterflies in the valley during this year’s ‘butterfly explosion’. That seems so crazy,” said Yang. According to Yang, in the valley, more than 320 butterfly species have been identified in specimens or photographs, including the rarest, most primitive, largest and smallest butterflies in China. Besides Yang, many local villages have also assumed the role of butterfly guardians. However, the journey toward achieving human-butterfly harmony was far from easy. Some two decades ago, the villagers had little awareness of butterfly protection, believing wrongly that butterflies could endanger their food crops. They viewed them as pests that should be removed. In 1998, Yang began his journey at the agricultural science station in Ma’an’dí Township, the very place where the butterfly valley lies. “It was there that I got into a frequent dilemma — the local villagers, seeking to protect their crops, would often turn to pesticides to kill the butterflies,” he said. “However, my sincere love for these creatures forced me to prevent them from harming the delicate insects.” Now, the development of ecotourism relying on butterfly resources has successfully transformed the once impoverished (贫困的) township. More villagers have started engaging in butterfly breeding. “Protecting the forests, conserving water sources and preserving butterflies have become conscious actions within the local community,” said Yang. He describes the butterfly valley as a “dream-making machine”, which extends the “butterfly dream” of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. 41.What role does Yang Zhenwen play in the butterfly valley? A.He is a researcher studying the butterfly population. B.He is the curator of the butterfly valley museum.C.He is a local villager who helps with butterfly conservation. D.He is a government official responsible for the valley’s management. 42.What can we infer about the butterflies from paragraph 2? A.They mostly die in their first two months. B.They are more active right before night falls. C.They tend to grow up better in warm temperatures. D.They appear in large numbers mostly in early June. 43.What has happened to Ma’an’di Township so far? A.It has killed most of the butterfly species. B.It has become richer thanks to ecotourism. C.It has attached more importance to food crops. D.It has applied more pesticides to their food crops. 44.What does Yang Zhenwen mean when he talks about the “butterfly dream”? A.The hope to become an expert on butterflies. B.The wish to live in harmony with nature. C.The goal of having a museum dedicated to butterflies. D.The ambition to increase the variety of butterflies in the area. 45.Which can be a suitable title for the passage? A.Changing the Poor State of a Town B.Volunteering as a Butterfly Guardian C.Helping Butterflies Spread Their Wings D.Developing a Relationship with the Locals C There is an old Chinese proverb that states “One generation plants the trees; another gets the shade,” and this is how it should be with mothers and daughters. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is sometimes confusing. The relationship can be similar to friendship. However, the mother and daughter relationship has unique characteristics that distinguish it from a friendship. These characteristics include a hierarchy (等级) of responsibilities and unconditional love, which preclude mothers and daughters from being best friends. Marina, 27 years old, said, “I love spending time with my mom, but I wouldn’t consider her my best friend. Best friends don’t pay for your wedding. Best friends don’t remind you how they carried you in their body and gave you life! Best friends don’t tell you how wise they are because they have been alive at least 20 years longer than you.” This doesn’t mean that the mother and daughter relationship can’t be very close and satisfying. This generation of mothers and adult daughters has a lot in common, which increases the likelihood of shared companionship. Mothers and daughters have always shared the common experience of being homemakers, responsible for maintaining and passing on family values and traditions. Today contemporary mothers and daughters also share the experience of work and technology, which may bring them even closer together. Best friends may or may not continue to be best friends, but for better or worse, the mother and daughter relationship is permanent, even if for some unfortunate reason they aren’t speaking. Sometimes this is not an equal relationship. Daughters don’t always feel responsible for their mother’s emotional well-being. But mothers never stop being mothers, which includes frequently wanting to protect their daughters and often feeling responsible for their happiness. The mother and daughter relationship is a relationship that is not replaceable by any other. Mothers always “trump (胜过)” friends.46.What does the underlined word “preclude” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A.differ. B.benefit. C.prevent. D.change. 47.What can we learn from what Marina said? A.Best friends will not spend money on her wedding. B.Best friends will not remind her of important issues in life. C.Her mother is wiser on account of her age. D.Her mother is anything but her best friend. 48.Why can a mother and a daughter build a closer relationship? A.Because they share advanced technology with each other. B.Because they work together to support the whole family. C.Because they experience the same values and traditions. D.Because they have common experience in life and work. 49.What do we know from the text? A.The mother and daughter relationship can be replaced by a best friend. B.A mother’s love brings her and her daughter a close friendship. C.Marina has a troubled relationship with her mother. D.The mother and daughter relationship goes beyond best friendship. 50.What is the text mainly about? A.How to build a good mother and daughter relationship. B.A mother-daughter relationship is irreplaceable. C.Mothers want to be daughters’ friends. D.A daughter is a mother’s best friend. 第四节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) After completing my first year of studies, I decided to relax by taking a trip through one of the most richly cultured countries in Asia:Nepal. The first thing I noticed about Nepal was its people, kind and friendly, ready to help someone in need. I’m saying so because all of what I’ve witnessed between the citizens themselves, rather than how they treated me as a visitor. It is shown in the way bus conductors and passengers alike keep the bus waiting for that last passenger who is lagging behind. It is evident in how a motorist smiles and waves off a kid who runs onto the street after his ball. The people are like a hot bowl of soup on a rainy day. The first place I visited in Nepal was the Sauraha village in the district of Chitwan. It is an amazingly peaceful place, where the people live at their own pace. It is a great area to see some of the wildlife, such as rhinos and elephants. The capital city of Kathmandu was where I spent most of my time. The city is usually very dusty, so make sure to wear a mask. Another great area in Kathmandu is the district of Thamel. Unlike most other districts, Thamel is very busy throughout the day. Out of all the places I’ve been to within Nepal, Pokhara is undoubtedly the best place to visit. There are a lot of fun things to try out. I’ve gone paragliding as well as boating in Fewa Lake, but you can also go rafting, zip flying and paramotoring. Nepal is a very affordable destination to travel to. I traveled through the country for about two months, and spent a little over 500 US dollars. Accommodation around Nepal is inexpensive, mostly varying from about 500 to 1,500 rupees per night per person. During my stay in Kathmandu. I stayed at a great hotel for two weeks, for 300 rupees per night , which is a great deal. In a word, Nepal is a fantastic place. Whether you’re looking to relax in the wildness andpeace of nature, or for an exciting new adventure, Nepal has a variety of choices to offer. 51. What does the author think of the people in Nepal? Dating back to the 18th century, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history, giving it a high rank in Chinese culture. In addition, the costumes as well as masks are greatly amazing, which also get across characters’ personalities and emotions to audience. Generally speaking, the stage is pretty simple, while how the characters move on it is quite beyond imagination. This is undoubtedly my favourite part of Peking Opera. Last butnot least, listening to the music played by traditional Chinese instruments throughout the process is also pleasant. So proud of Peking Opera am I that I do hope more and more people will fall in love with it. May our precious culture be passed down from generation to generation! 听力(满分15分) 1-5 CABCA 6-10 BCCCA 11-15 ACCAB
