Amy was a dear little girl, but she was too ready to waste time in getting ready to do her tasks, instead of
doing them at once as she ought to.
In the village in which she lived, Mr. Thornton kept a store where he sold fruit of all kinds, including berries in
their season. One day he said to Amy, whose parents were quite poor, "Would you like to earn some money?"
"Oh, yes, "replied she, "for I want some new shoes, and papa has no money to buy them with."
"Well, Amy," said Mr. Thornton, "I noticed some fine, ripe blackberries in Mr. Green's field today, and he said
that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you thirteen cents a quart(度量单位) for all you will pick for me."
Amy was delighted at the thought of earning some money; so she ran home to get a basket, intending to go
immediately to pick the berries.
Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five quarts. With thehelp of her slate(书写板) and pencil, she found out that she would get sixty-five cents.
"But supposing I should pick a dozen quarts," thought she, "how much should I earn then?" "Dear me!" she
said, after figuring(测算) a while, "I should earn a dollar and fifty-six cents."
Amy then found out what Mr. Thornton would pay her for fifty, a hundred, and two hundred quarts. It took her
some time to do this, and then it was so near dinner time that she had to stay at home until afternoon.
,
As soon as dinner was over she took her basket and hurried to the field. Some boys had been there
before dinner, and all the ripe berries were picked. She could not find enough to fill a quarter of a quart.

about it," for "One doer(实干家) is worth a hundred dreamers."

Conflict is on the menu tonight at the care La Chope. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist
Maud Lehanne is leading two of France's favourite pastimes coffee drinking and the "talking cure". Here they are
learning to get in touch with their true feelings. It isn't always easy. The customers-some thirty Parisians who pay
just under $2 (plus drinks) per session-are quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论), slow to open up and connect. "You
are forbidden to say 'one feels', or 'people think'," Lehanne told them. "Say 'I think', 'Think me'."
A care society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn't seem more un-French. But Lehanne's
psychology care is about more than knowing oneself: it's trying to help the city's troubled neighborhood cafes. Overthe years, Parisian cafes have been influenced by the changes in the French lifestyle-longer working hours, a fast-
food boom and a younger generation's desire to spend more time at home. Many new theme cafes appear to change
the situation. Cafes focused around psychology, history, and engineering are catching on, filling tables well into the
evening.
The city's "psychology cafes", which offer great comfort, are among the most popular places. Middle-aged
housewives, retirees (退休人员), and the unemployed come to such cafes to talk about love, anger, and dreams
with a psychologist. And they come to Lehanne's group just to learn to say what they feel. "There's a strong need in
Paris for communication," says Maurice Frisch, a cafe La Chope regular who works as a religious instructor in a
nearby church. "People have few real friends. And they need to open up." Lehanne says she'd like to see
psychology cafes all over France. "If people had normal lives, these cafes wouldn't exist," she says. "If life weren't
a battle, people wouldn't need a special place just to speak." But then, it wouldn't be France.
40. What are people encouraged to do at the cafe La Chope?
A. Express their true feelings. B. Keep in touch with friends.
C. Show off their knowledge. D. Learn a new subject.
41. What are the new theme cafes expected to do?
A. Create more jobs. B. Supply better drinks.
C. Serve the neighborhood. D. Save the cafe business.
42. Why are psychology cafes becoming popular in Paris?
A. Because they bring people true friendship.
B. Because they offer a place for business links.
.
C Because they help people realize their dreams.
D. Because they give people spiritual support.

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden,
carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his
childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.
Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study
showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.
"Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were useful
,
members of society " said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery. "And
because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."Valllant's study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under
Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were
given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp.
Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with different kinds of
people, 5 times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also
found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working-at
any age-is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and
competence-the underpinnings (基础)of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must
cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet
work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work
and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work."
43. What do we know about John?
A. He was admired by others in his childhood.
B. He had few childhood friends.
C. He received little love from his family.
D. He enjoyed his career and marriage.
44. Vaillant's team gained their findings by _________.
.
A testing the men's mental health
B. comparing different sets of scores
C. recording the boys' effort in school
D. measuring the men's problem solving ability
45. What does the underlined word "sharp" mean in Paragraph 4?
A. clear and sure B. having a thin point
C. quick to react D. sudden and rapid
46. What can be inferred (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Competent adults know more about love than work.
B. Love brings more joy to people than work does.
C. Emotional health is important to a wonderful adult life.
D. Independence is the key to one's success.

Some recent surveys show that the health problems of many office workers are rather serious. Death casesamong them are increasing year by year because of overwork and spending little time taking rest or doing exercise.
If their offices are within the distance of half an hour's walk, some office workers now choose to go to work on
foot. Ms. Wang, who became to work in a foreign company in Beijing 8 months ago, has been walking to her office
for more than 6 months now. "I usually have a busy work schedule and can't find time to do exercise. So I choose to

give up the lift and climb stairs. Mr. Yang who works in the Passenger Service Department at Beijing Airlines, is
one of such men who often climb stairs to his office. "I only use the lift whenever I am with my colleagues or my
boss. Otherwise, I would climb stairs instead of taking the lift."
In addition, some office workers try to find time to go to gym at the end of a day. Ms. Sunny works in a law
firm. She goes to the gym several times a week when she has the time." I go to the gym every weekend. During the
weekdays, I will also go there whenever I have the time." Ms Sunny and her husband both have a gym membership
card for a whole year. The cards cost them a lot of money. However, they think it is worth it.
