Love can always last
Eleanor didn’t know what was wrong with Grandma. She was always forgetting things, like where she put the
sugar and what time to have dinner.
“She might have Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症),” her mother said. “We might have to put her in a
nursing home so she can get proper care.”
“Oh, that’s terrible! She’ll miss her own house!” Eleanor said.
“Maybe, but we can see her on weekends,” her mother answered. “We can bring her presents.”
“Like ice cream? Grandma loves strawberry ice cream!” Eleanor said.
The first time they visited Grandma, Eleanor felt sad and wanted to cry. Grandma sat in the corner of the room
lonely.
Eleanor hugged Grandma. “Look,” she said, “we brought you strawberry ice cream!” Grandma took it and
began eating without saying a word.
“She doesn’t seem to know us.” Eleanor was upset. “Grandma, do you know who I am?” Eleanor asked.
“You’re the girl who brings me the ice cream,” Grandma said.
“Yes, but I’m Eleanor, too, your granddaughter. Don’t you remember me?”
“Sure. You’re the girl who brings me ice cream.” Suddenly Eleanor realized that Grandma would never
remember her.
,
“Oh how I love you, Grandma!” she said. Just then she saw a tear roll down Grandma’s cheek. “Love,”
she said. “I remember love.”
“You see, dear, that’s all she wants,” her mother said. “Love.”

Washing clothes is easy for most people living in cities, as washing machines do the job. However, in many
rural (农村的) areas or poor regions, people have to wash their clothes by hand because they don’t have electricity
or money to buy the machines. Now, a new bamboo washing machine might help them solve this problem.
The machine is a simpler form of a traditional washing machine. There are two main parts: the main washing
,
machine which can be shared among the community, and a wooden bucket that belongs to individuals or
families. The machine uses the natural flow (流动) of water instead of electricity. It has a wooden rotation shaft in
the center and a bamboo drum outside. You just put the machine in a river and water will go into the bottom of the
machine and rotate the main drum. This creates an eddy (涡流) that cleans clothes.
A 7-member team from the School of Design at Dalian Minzu University created the machine. Their design
won the “Best of the Best” prize at the 2020 Red Dot Awards.
“There are 836 million people living in poor areas in the world. They have to spend lots of time and energydoing little things like washing clothes. We want the bamboo washing machine to help them free up their time so
they can do more meaningful things, like fighting poverty,” said Pan Cheng, one of the designers.
“The best thing about this machine is that it’s cheap and easy to make,” said Yu Yue, another designer. “We
give people the rotation shaft and teach them how to set up the machine. They can find bamboo locally and make it
into drums. If there is no bamboo, they can also use materials like wood.”
The designers said they spent more than half a year working on the machine. They had countless team
meetings and changed their design at least four times. But in the end, they were happy with the results.
27. The bamboo washing machine was created for people who ________.
A. live in big cities B. want to save power
C. live in the wild D. live in poor areas
28. How can the bamboo washing machine work?
① Put the machine into a river.
.
② Eddy in the machine cleans clothes
③ Water goes into the bottom of the machine.
④ Water in the drum drives the wooden rotation shaft.
A. ①②③④ B. ①③④②
C. ③①②④ D. ③④①②
29. From the passage, we can learn that ________.
A. it took the designers more than a year to make the drum
B. Pen Cheng grew up in a rural area without much electricity
.
C people can learn to set up the machine from the designers
D. seven teachers work together to win the 2020 Red Dot Awards
30. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Winning the best prize
B. Making rural life easier
C. How to fight for the poor
D. How to make the machine
D
You might be looking for new ways to improve your understanding of something you are studying. Perhaps
you are trying to find better methods to remember important information. One way to help you reach these goals is
,
to try teaching — not as a job but as a way to improve your own learning.
Researchers have been interested in the link between teaching and learning for quite some time. Their findings
suggested that teaching had a strong effect(影响) on understanding and learning. When students teach the content(内容) of a lesson, they develop a deeper understanding of the material than from only preparing to teach.
Scientists have also explored the question of why teaching improves learning. A 2018 study suggests that
teaching may help your learning because you have to remember the information you have learned as you continue
to teach. Experts call this retrieval. The researchers wrote that “retrieval practice possibly causes the learning
benefits from teaching.” Of course, retrieval may be one reason that teaching helps learning, there could be other
reasons.
The good news is that there are many ways that you can improve your learning by teaching. One way might be
to teach your family or friends about something that you are learning. For example, you could teach your parents
about English grammar or vocabulary. You could also try teaching a younger person, perhaps a cousin, brother or
sister. Try to make your lessons simple and clear, and ask them what they do not understand. The process of
teaching and asking for feedback(反馈) will help you realize that you may not understand some things as well as
you thought you did. That is an important, necessary step in the learning process. Another idea is to imagine
yourself describing a lesson to someone, or to write the lesson down. In the Guardian newspaper, David Robson
suggests that you could write an email describing what you have learned in great detail. A final idea for those who
like technology: You could record video of yourself teaching information. You could then send the lesson to friends
or put it on some other social media service.
Give teaching a try, it may improve your learning.
31. The words “retrieval practice” in paragraph 3 probably mean _______.
A. writing down the answers
B. looking for the materials
C. exploring what you have taught
D. remembering what you have learned
32. What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Ideas for how to start teaching.
B. Ways on how to record the video.
C. Suggestions on making your lessons simple.
D. Benefits of describing something in details.
33. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show us the importance of teaching by learning.
B. To encourage us to improve our learning by teaching.
C. To explain the differences between teaching and learning.
D. To tell us how to step in the learning process successfully.四、阅读短文,根据其内容回答问题。(共5分,每小题1分)
Growing hope
For most Chinese people, rice is an important part of almost every meal. But for Yuan Longping, rice was
more than that. It was his life-long career.
Yuan, known as China’s “father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻)”, created hybrid rice that helps feed the world. On
May 22, Yuan died at 91. People around the world were sad to hear of his passing.
How did he begin?
In the 1960s, people in China didn’t have enough food to eat. Many people even died because of this. Yuan
was sad to see this. At the time, other scientists didn’t think hybrid rice had much value. But Yuan worked on it
every day. They took very good care of their rice seeds.
At last, in 1973, he grew a new type of hybrid rice. This rice is different from other kinds of rice. Farmers can
grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight disease, too. With the new type,
about 70,000,000 people could have food every year!
Home on the farm
Yuan was a famous scientist. But he called himself a farmer. He spent most of his time in the field. Yuan
himself also said, “If I am not at home, I must be on the farmland; if I am not on the farmland, I must be on my way
to the farmland.” He often rode a motorcycle to work, as this was more convenient for him.
Praise for Yuan
In 1991, the United Nations invited Yuan Longping to work as its chief consultant (首席顾问). He traveled to
many foreign countries to share his knowledge of hybrid rice. “Professor Yuan made such a powerful contribution
and he will long be remembered,” Barbara Stinson, president of the World Food Prize Foundation said.
