artist,” she said. “Hi, I’m Lucy. I like art,” Lucy said. “Me, too! Let’s ___13___ at your house this weekend. I’ll
bring my markers (马克笔). You can make us cookies,” Dinah said. “OK,” Lucy said, ___14___ to have a new
friend.
On Saturday, Dinah came to Lucy’s house. Lucy took out the strawberry cookie, fresh from the oven. “I like

“Sometimes, but sometimes I’m afraid of her,” Lucy answered. Lucy’s dad smiled. “To have a friend, you have to
be a friend. Maybe Dinah hasn’t ___19___ that yet but you have.” “Dinah told me not to play with other kids,”
Lucy said. “Dinah is in charge of (掌控) Dinah. You’re in charge of you,” dad said.

is mean,” Dinah said. Then Ana smiled at Lucy, and it made Lucy feel a little ___20___. “I’m going to sit withAna. Come with me,” Lucy said. “Lucy, sit down!” Dinah said loudly but Lucy didn’t sit down. “If you want to be

Jarrett was road testing his mountain bike outside of Columbus, when his riding partner Chris stopped
suddenly. He saw something moving among the trees. It was a dog. He was really thin, and had a broken leg.
The cyclists fed the poor dog and shared their water. They also quickly realized that the dog was coming with
them, although they had no idea how. They were more than seven miles from downtown and riding bikes. “Wecouldn’t leave him,” Jarrett said, “Out here next to the river, he was going to end up as the food of alligator (短吻

Jarrett came up with an idea. He carefully picked up his new friend and put the 38-pound dog’s hind (后部的)
legs into the back pockets of his cycling T-shirt. Then he hung the dog’s front feet over his shoulders.
“He was hurt, so he wasn’t trying to fight against us,” Jarrett says. “He was also happy that we were there,
touching him, and didn’t stay away from him.”
The 30-minute ride into town ended at a bike store, where they got more water and food for the dog. That was
when Andrea, a teacher from Maine in town, noticed the dog. “The dog rushed to her, licking and showing love for
her,” says Chris. Andrea was surprised and, after learning what had happened, made a decision, “I am keeping this
dog.”
Andrea called him Columbo after the town where they’d meet and gave him an operation on his leg. Today,

“No freedom (自由) summer holiday” has become a popular topic on Weibo, as parents begin spending much
time and money planning their children’s holiday. It has been a similar (相似的) topic these years, when “Having
30,000 yuan a month cannot afford the summer holiday” also goes popular online.
According to a survey, parents in big cities are most willing to spend on their children’s education during the
break.
“I feel much more stressed during the summer holiday than on normal school days since I need to plandifferent activities for my children. A study tour costs 35,000 yuan for a kid and there are also classes which are
necessary for kids,” said Chan Lee, a 40-year-old mother of two primary schoolchildren.
Sending children on overseas tours has also become an important part of the break. Almost everyone in Chan’s
children’s classes has joined a summer study tour. They wanted to experience an overseas educational environment,
culture, and language through meeting people, visiting famous universities and sightseeing.
Cheng Guowei, a manager of a study tour center based in Shanghai, said parents care about their children’s
education. “Nearly 95% of our participants (参与者) are students, and most of them are primary and middle school
kids. Yet this market is also very competitive (有竞争力的), as there are many similar centers targeting the
parents,” he said.
Yin Jianli is a writer. She is interested in family and education topics. She said it was unnecessary to plan too
many activities for children during the summer holidays.
“Parents are not helping their children. They are just doing it to cut down their own worry,” she said. Many
parents thought they could buy their children a better education, “But actually a summer holiday should be a time
for rest and play, not study,” she said.
30. The word “stressed” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. nervous B. bored C. relaxed D. excited
,
31. From the passage we know ________.

32. Yin Jianli may agree that ________.
A. a summer holiday is a time for kids to study hard
B. parents could buy their children a better education
C. a summer holiday is a time for kids to relax themselves

A. It’s important for kids to take a study tour.
B. Primary students are too young to take a tour.
C. Many tour centers provide study tours for parents.
D. Most children have less free time in summer vacation.四、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共10分,每小题2分)
Plastic straws (吸管) cause danger to the environment. They’re so small and they easily find their way into the
ocean, where they can harm animals because they may eat them. Then, what can you use instead of plastic straws to
protect the environment? Here are some choices.
Bamboo straws
Fast-growing bamboo is ideal for making drinking straws. Many companies now produce bamboo straws,
often without the use of chemicals (化学物质). Bamboo straws can be washed by hand and used again and again.
When they do wear out, they break down easily.
Glass straws
Glass straws can also be reused, and if they’re clear, it’s easy to see whether they’re clean or not. Some
companies make bent glass straws, which means you don’t have to tip (倾斜) your glass to drink with them. They
are available in different colors and widths, so customers have many choices to choose from.
Bottles that come with straws
Many water bottles come with built-in straws. Although that straw may be made of plastic, you keep it and use
it repeatedly. That means it probably won’t end up in the ocean any time soon. Water bottles can also replace (替代)
paper cups, which cuts down on waste even more.
No straw
For many drinks, straws aren’t required; people can drink straight out of a cup. Businesses can cut down on
the number of straws they use by just asking people if they want one. Many people hardly notice whether they have
a straw or not.
Plastic straws are far from the only way to enjoy your favorite drink. Giving them up is an easy way to help
take care of our planet.
34. Why do plastic straws do harm to animals in the ocean?
