For the performance, Mr. Yao even invited his wife, a local musician, to guide the practice. Zhao Xiang
thought it was a good chance for him to show his talent.
At the first practice, things did not go as what Zhao Xiang had expected—he was too good to join the others.
The musician was not satisfied and Zhao Xiang felt bad. Mr. Yao saw everything and he came up to Zhao Xiang

how to breathe (换气), how to control voice and sing gracefully. The practice was hard, but everyone was happy
with him—the class teacher, the musician, his classmates, and even his parents—about his development!
At last, the Big Day came. The whole class was on the stage. They tried their best and they made it! When
the headmaster read out first prize, everyone jumped up and shouted with joy. They threw Zhao Xiang up into the
air. Zhao Xiang felt great because he knew he was not just singing for himself but for the class as a team. He
learned that teamwork is needed everywhere and that teamwork is about trust and helping one another. He was so
proud because he had done something important for his class!

thing is that we keep taking steps towards our goals and clearly remember what our goals are all the time. The
actual speed isn’t important.
The road to progress is not always smooth. Sometimes, maybe it feels like we’re taking one step forward and
three steps back, but it won’t always be like that. Keep going towards our goals and we can more easily make the

When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. Then stress is caused.
Feelings of anger, disappointment and sadness come along. That’s why such stress needs to be dealt with.
Max, a 14-year-old boy, used to be very competitive and always felt stressed. Now he is learning to give
himself care and kindness. When he doesn’t win or get the top marks, he talks to himself, “It’s OK not to be
perfect.” He knows he always does his best and that is enough.
What Max does is called self-compassion (自我和解). With self-compassion, you treat yourself kindly like a
friend. It allows you to forgive (原谅) yourself when you mess up or fail. After feelings of guilt (愧疚) go away,
you get more relaxed and you can think more clearly. This way self-compassion makes you move forward. Many
studies have shown it is of great help.

However, some disagree. They argue that self-compassion leads people to be less active. But Breines and

study for a second test. They found those who were compassionate toward their failure spent more time preparing.
Experts suggest that you should write a letter to yourself, describing the situation that causes your pain and
accepting how you feel. Or you can do something you like to make yourself feel at peace. Suzy Reading, a

In the past, scientists didn’t know that trees could sense things. Now, they are discovering that trees can
notice lots of things around them!
Trees can feel the four main periods of the year. They know when to drop their leaves in autumn, and when
to grow new leaves in spring.
Trees can sense light. They know where the sun is, so their branches grow in that direction. That’s why trees
in the northern hemisphere (半球) usually have more branches growing out on the south side.
Trees can recognize insects. If an insect starts eating a tree of a certain species, the tree has clever ways of
fighting back. For example, if an insect is eating the trunk of a pine tree, the tree can produce a glue-like liquid (液
体), and use it to catch the enemy.
Trees can sense directions. They can feel where “up” and “down” are. There is no light down in the earth,
but the roots always know which way to grow.
Tree roots can also sense sounds. They really like the sound of running water when they are thirsty. If the
sound continues for a long time, the roots will slowly start growing towards it.
There are still many things we don’t know about trees. Scientists are working hard to find out more.

What Can Trees Tell us about Climate Change?
Trees can keep a record of the earth’s climate (气候) for a long time. In fact, trees can live for hundreds,
even thousands of years!
If you see a stump (树桩), you may find that the top of the stump has many rings. These rings can tell us
how old the tree is, and what the weather was like during each year of the tree’s life.
In most places, daily weather records have only been kept for the past 100 to 150 years. So, scientists can
use trees to learn about the climate hundreds to thousands of years ago.

(2024·黑龙江大庆·中考真题)It’s common that people may find it difficult to get enough sleep because
they have big pressure (压力) and heavy work. We all know that it is bad for our health. But if you sleep for less
than 5 hours each day, you may even have fewer friends.
According to researchers, people who don’t get enough sleep can be less willing to communicate with
others. The researchers tested 18 young people after a good night’s sleep and then tested them again after a
sleepless night. The participants (参与者) watched videos of people walking towards them. When the person on the
video got too “close” to them, they stopped the video. The results showed that the participants kept the person
further away when they didn’t get enough sleep. But when the participants got a good night’s sleep, they allowed
the person to get much closer to them.
According to the lead researcher, the less sleep you get, the less you may want to communicate with others.
In turn, other people may think you are strange and stay away from you. This can make you feel lonely and cause
you to sleep even less. So if you want to be a more popular person, sleeping well might help.

In our lives, we have to get on with the people around us. Being a decent (得体的) person will help us form
healthy relationships. Here are some useful suggestions on how to be a decent person.
Let others trust you. Keep up with your promises. If you promise to be somewhere at a certain time, be
there. If you say you’ll do a favor, do it. Decent people follow through because they want others to feel safe. People
need dependable friends and family members to have a sense of safety in their lives.
Avoid judgment. Remember, you cannot fully understand what it’s like to be inside someone else’s head.
11关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
Therefore, avoid trying to pass judgment on a behavior or a decision. Everyone is different. So, it should not be
surprising if another person’s choice is different from yours. It’s okay to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and
try to understand their decisions.
Provide support during bad times. Think about times in your life that were hard. You probably had
friends, family members, and other loved ones helping you along the way. If you want to be a decent person, you
should provide support in return. When people go through difficult times, put yourself out there and help.
Let go of anger. If you live with a lot of anger, you’re more likely to be unfriendly to others. Becoming a
decent person often means letting go of some anger. If you find yourself becoming angry, take physical means to
cool down. For example, take a deep breath. Always remember to avoid taking things personally. This will help you
away from your anger.

Bring Nature Indoors
Indoor plants seem to just sit around without doing much, but in many ways they are the silent heroes of
homes. Not only do they look beautiful, but they can lift our health in body and mind by making us feel good and
taking away stress. What’s more, indoor plants are easy to look after and are not very expensive.
What are indoor plants?
Indoor plants, also known as houseplants, are plants that like to grow indoors. Many of these kinds are not
used to growing outside, especially in winter, they grow better inside because of the warmer condition. There are
many kinds of indoor plants around us, such as peace lilies, spider plants and succulents.
Why are indoor plants good for us?
There are many advantages about growing plants indoors. Plants around houses can improve our feelings.
13关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
Studies have supported this and found that indoor plants can improve our creativity, focus and memory. There is
also research showing that houseplants can clean the air around them by removing some harmful gases, such as
HCHO (甲醛). Dr Tijana Blanusa said, “Plants catch and hold tiny polluted materials. They remove some harmful
chemicals from cooking or painting. Peace lilies and devil’s ivy are the best.”
How to choose indoor plants?
We can get plants from supermarkets, garden centers or online. Younger plants are often cheaper than fully
grown ones. Caring for them is always full of joy. You water them, talk to them, see them grow up… Learning
about the habits of each plant can bring a new interest and attention into our lives and help to connect our homes
with nature.

Humans have long tried to predict (预测) the weather. From the hunters of ancient times to today’s pilots,
predicting rain or shine can shape people’s life and make a difference.
In 650 BC, the Babylonians tried to predict the weather based on the appearance of clouds. Around 340 BC,
Aristotle, a famous Greek thinker and scientist, wrote Meteorologica. It introduced the types of weather, such as
rain, cloud and lightning. Aristotle believed that there was water, air and fire around the Earth. It was almost 2,000
years before his ideas were replaced by new ones.
By 300 BC in China, a calendar divided the year into 24 festivals gradually, each festival related to a type of
weather, like the Rain Water (the start of the spring rains), the Waking of Insects (the spring thunder awakens
sleeping insects) and so on. That was useful for farmers to plan when to plant and harvest (收获).
14关注公众号:陆陆高分冲刺 ~领取:最新版“小中高考-总复习”、最新试卷下载
People used lots of ways to predict the weather over the centuries. You might have heard the expressions like
“Red sky at night, sailor’s delight”, which suggests a red sky in the evening is followed by good weather. This has a
basis in science, as does telling wind direction through smoke from the fire. On the other hand, some thought that if
sheep crowded together, it meant rain. But there isn’t any science behind it.
The science of weather prediction really took off in the 1830s with the invention of the telegraph. It sent
messages over hundreds of thousands of miles, so weather maps were drawn up and storm systems were studied.
The next big step came in the 1920s with the invention of the “radiosonde”, a balloon carrying weather instruments
high above the ground to collect information. Experts took the information and built a picture of the weather over
the following few days.
Today, supercomputers are used to take data (数据) from the world and process it very fast to work out the
weather. For example, they once helped predict where Hurricane Lee, which hit the US and Canada, would land
nine days in advance (提前).

“Since you enjoy my chessboard so much, just give me a grain of wheat on the first square(方格)of the

Sessa.

should give Sessa a total of 18, 446, 744, 073, 709, 551, 615 grains of wheat!

Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of traditional Chinese folk drama. It is probably one of the

most ancient arts using light and shadow. It is also a mix of many art forms, including painting, music, opera and
story-telling. Shadow puppetry was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2011.
More than 2,000 years ago, Emperor Wu of Han was very sad about the death of his wife. One day, one of
his men happened to see some children playing with toys. The shadows of the toys were lively on the floor. Then he
had an idea— he made a puppet (偶) of the emperor’s wife. As night fell, he invited the emperor to watch a puppet
show. This is believed to be the start of shadow puppetry.
In the Tang Dynasty, shadow puppetry was played by many people in many places around the country. Then
in the Yuan Dynasty, it was introduced into West Asian and European countries along the Silk Road. The art form
became the most popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, it was played in almost every province and in many
kinds of celebrations like weddings and birthday dinners.
It is not an easy job to make the puppets. Their body parts are cut separately and then joined together so that
they can move freely. During the show, puppetry artists connect the puppets’ most important joints (关节) with
sticks. In this way, they can hold the puppets and make the puppets walk, run or dance as they want. Sometimes the
puppets could be as lively as living things on the screen.
In fact, most puppetry artists across China don’t get trained and don’t play shadow puppetry as a job. They
just play it for fun and love. However, they are still experts (专家)in this field. In recent years, puppetry artists
have explored ways to make this ancient art form as popular as it used to be and pass it on to the young, hoping
more people can understand its importance and feel its beauty. They also get support from the Chinese government.
Thanks to their hard work, Chinese shadow puppetry is becoming great again.

“It can’t be done.” Boyan Slat heard this over and over when he first suggested a way to clean up millions of
tons of plastic polluting our oceans.
Slat was on a diving(潜水)trip in Greece three years ago when he was troubled by plastic. “There were
more plastic bags than fishes,” he says. “That moment I realized it was a huge problem and that environmental
problems are really the biggest problems we will face.”
That fall, Slat, then 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Slat learned
that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic
using ships with nets—which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the
rubbish.
Slat decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered system(太阳能系统)using a moving plastic tube
(管)which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship
will pick up the rubbish and take it back to the land.
Slat organized a team of volunteers for the Ocean Cleanup, which has about 100 members.
Over the next three to four years, Slat will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.

Crying brings advantages to both your body and mind. It is a good way to make you feel less stressed and
cheer you up. It also helps keep your eyes clean. Crying is like giving your eyes a good wash from the inside.
Moreover, it can help you sleep better.
Crying is usually connected with emotions like anger or sadness. When you are happy, you may not often
think of crying. But have you ever heard of “happy crying”? You might have experienced it before. Scientists have
found out happy crying may happen in the following situations:
☆When you have feelings that can’t be expressed
When you have some bad feelings that haven’t been noticed for a long time, and they are not allowed to be
expressed, happy crying happens. That is to say, even when you experience something happy, the bad feelings that
haven’t been noticed or dealt with will still make you cry.
☆When you are unable to keep yourself in good condition
Crying can help you manage strong moods or feelings. Some happy moments can also bring you strong
feelings and you may find it hard to control them, so crying can be of help. When you cry, it feels like you are
driving some bad or terrible feelings away from your body. Besides, the hormones (激素) in tears can help to keep
a balance between body and mood. They can calm you down and make you feel peaceful.

Animals play so many important roles in our lives. Some, like cows and sheep, provide us with food; pets
are our friends; other animals work for us. Above all, every animal—big or small—can fill us with a sense of the
wonder of the natural world.
Unluckily, we don’t always value this. Many animals are endangered because of our actions, and millions of

World Animal Day was started in 1931 in Florence, Italy. It made us pay attention to the problem of
endangered animals around the world. It is now celebrated in most countries around the world. The day falls on
October 4th every year.
All over the world on this day, volunteers raise money for animal centers and social organizations. Museums
