heliospheric(日球层的) physics for the past half century, passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on Mar.

Hailed(誉为) as a visionary in the field of heliophysics, Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun
and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system. NASA even stated that “the field of heliophysics
exists in large part because of Dr. Eugene Parker. In 2018, Parker became the first living scientist to witness the
launch of a spacecraft that was named in his honor.
Parker is best known for his groundbreaking theory on the existence of a phenomenon called “solar wind”, a
continuous stream of charged particles that flow off the sun. It can become violent, causing space weather that
impacts the Earth. When Parker’s research was published in 1958, his theory was initially met with skepticism(怀
疑) and ridicule by the scientific community. The general view at the time was that the space between planets wasan absolute vacuum(真空), and was thus completely empty of any matter. But, there were no errors in his study or
his calculations, and the theory was later proven to be correct in 1962, when a NASA spacecraft mission to Venus

metal spikes (things with sharp points) designed to keep them away from certain urban areas to make their own
nests stronger and keep invaders at bay.
Scientists have known for a while that magpies are some of the most intelligent birds in the world, but even
they were puzzled by their amazing ability to adapt to hostile urban environments. It’s not unusual for birds to use
human trash as tools and building materials for their nests, but seeing them use the very things we humans use
against them was nothing short of puzzling for researchers at the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam and the
Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, in the Netherlands.
“I didn’t expect this. These anti bird spikes are meant to deter birds, they are supposed to scare them off, but
on the contrary, the birds just use them.” Kees Moeliker, the director of the Natural History Museum Rotterdam,
told The Guardian.
One particularly impressive magpie nest was discovered in the courtyard of a hospital in Antwerp, Belgium. It
was made up of around 1,500 anti-bird spikes, most of which seemed to be positioned with the sharp point
outwards, as protection against invaders. After discovering it, researchers checked the roof and confirmed that
around 50 meters of anti-bird spike strips had been ripped off the building, leaving only the glue used to fix them in
place.
Birds have been known to take sharp objects, from point y branches to nails, screws, into their nests as
protection, but the use of anti-bird spikes is kind of ironic, as they are the very things used to keep them away. To
scientists like Hiemstra, this is a sort of “beautiful revenge”.
A few years back, we wrote about rich people in the UK installing anti-bird spikes on trees to stop birds from
pooping on their luxury cars, but I guess the birds had the last laugh.

D（2024·浙江·统考模拟预测）Noisy family? Loud construction right outside your window? A new flexible
loudspeaker could help you rest easily. It could turn your walls into noise-canceling systems.
The new loudspeaker is about as thick as a few sheets of paper. It’s lightweight and flexible enough to stick to
most surfaces to control noise much easier, notes Jinchi Han, an electrical engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in Cambridge.
Lots of dome-shaped (圆顶状的) microstructures are in the centre of the new speaker. Han’s team sandwiches
their new material between two plastic sheets to protect the domes. “The bottom layer lifts up the small domes so
that they can vibrate (震动) freely, and the upper protective layer is thicker than the domes that are secured in the
middle of the layers,” he explains. “So if you touch the surface, you don’t need to worry about damaging these
small structures.”
Han points out large area of the new material could make controlling noise much easier.
Each dome works as a tiny speaker. The domes can generate sound waves all together, in groups or
individually. Wallpapering your bedroom with this material would create speakers all around you. Those same
speakers could then dampen or cancel unwanted sound. “If you desire, you could turn any space into a quiet zone
where you could sleep or study with barely any noise,” Han says. He also sees applications in cars, airplanes,
apartments or wherever unwanted noise is a problem.
Large versions could be the next step for this super-thin speakers, says Lori Beckstead, a sound artist.
“The new speakers are so thin and light that they could be placed in spaces where traditional loudspeakers
might have been impractical,” Beckstead adds. She notes that adding noise-canceling technology to loud spaces
from restaurants to noisy industrial plants would be fantastic.
