My mother’s gift
A dandelion (蒲公英) in my dictionary always reminds me of my lunchtimes with my mother.
When I was in the third grade, I was picked to be the princess in the school play, and for weeks my mother had
painstakingly (费力地) practised my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I
stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, my teacher took me aside. She explained that she
had written a narrator’s part to the play, and asked me to switch roles.
I didn’t tell my mother what had happened when I went home for lunch that day. But she sensed my unease,
and instead of suggesting we practice my lines, she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard.
It was a lovely spring day and the rose leaves were turning green. We could see yellow dandelions popping
through the grass in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with a little bit of gold.
I watched my mother casually bend down by one of the dandelions. “I think I’m going to dig up all theseweeds,” she said, suddenly pulling a flower up by its roots. “From now on, we’ll have only roses in this garden.”
“But I like dandelions,” I protested. “All flowers are beautiful — even dandelions.” My mother looked at me
seriously. “Yes, every flower gives pleasure in its own way, doesn’t it?” she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased
that I had won her over. “And that is true of people too,” she added. “Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no
shame in that.”
Relieved that she had guessed my pain, I started to cry as I told her what had happened.
“But you will be a beautiful narrator,” she said, reminding me of how much I loved to read stories aloud to her.
“The narrator’s part is as important as the part of a princess.”
Over the next few weeks, with her constant encouragement, I learned to take pride in the role. Lunchtimes
were spent reading over my lines and talking about what I would wear.

There was a time when my favorite thing to do in the entire world was to play in the woods near our house. A
river ran through them, so not only could I climb branches, but I could turn over rocks on the riverbank and find
baby eels (鳗鱼).
My favorite book was called Guide to Reptiles (爬行动物). My father had given it to me for my birthday, and
I read every page over and over, looking at the pictures of colorful animals. Some of the snakes were the most
beautiful creatures I had ever seen, and some were described as poisonous, but still an important part of the
ecosystem.
Little did I know that my book would end up saving a life.
My family moved to Virginia, into a new house. The houses were so new that no one had lived in them before.
In fact, woods had been there first, and almost all the trees had been cut down to make room for houses and
driveways. Inside our new house, everything smelled like fresh paint. Outside, no lawns had been planted, but myfather tossed out grass seed and baby seedlings grew. My brother Patrick and I could not walk on them. We had to
play in the driveway.
All the same, I liked our new house. One of the best things about living near the woods were the animals that
would come into our yard. Rabbits and turtles came over every night. It seemed as if they were only trying to go
home, and instead, what they had found was a big new land where their old homes used to be.
Besides playing in the driveway, we spent time in a sandbox, which my father built right next to the driveway.
One day before dinner, I ran to the sandbox to build a castle but found there in the sandbox was a snake.
It was lying very still, and it was beautiful. The snake had rings of color around it-red, then white, then yellow,
then black. I had seen a picture just like it in my reptile book, and I remembered that it was one of the prettiest
snakes in it. It said in the book that the poisonous snake looked very much like it. I was scared and ran inside.
Para 1: “Dad! Dad! There’s a snake in the sandbox!” I yelled.

Jonathan’s mother died when he was very young and his father brought him up. Both of them shared a very
special relationship. Football was not just a game for Jonathan; it was a bond between him and his father. Every
match, regardless of whether he played or not, his father would be there, a constant source of firm support.
Though his size prevented him from joining the main team, Jonathan’s determination burned brighter than
ever. With each practice, he improved his skills, fueled by the belief that someday his perseverance would pay off.
Despite the doubts cast upon him, he pushed forward, never allowing anything to make his passion disappear.
One day, as the sun cast long shadows on the field, the coach approached Jonathan with a telegram (电报) in
hand. The weight of the message pressed heavily on the young man’s heart as he read the words that forever
changed his world. He swallowed hard and his voice shook as he turned to the coach.
“My father... he died this morning,” Jonathan uttered, his voice filled with sorrow. His body trembled with the
weight of his sadness, threatening to consume him. Tears flooded his eyes, rolling down his cheeks.
The coach, understanding Jonathan’s loss, enveloped him in a comforting embrace. The warmth of his arm
around Jonathan’s shoulder provided a temporary comfort. Softly, the coach spoke words of relief and
understanding, giving Jonathan the time and space he needed to process his overwhelming sorrow.“Take the rest of the week off, son,” the coach said gently, his voice filled with sympathy. “And don’t even
plan to come to the game on Saturday. Your well-being matters more than anything.”
On the day of the game, Jonathan’s college team was losing badly to the opponent team. The coach and the
players had all lost hope when they saw Jonathan coming towards them. Jonathan ran up to the coach and begged
him to allow him to play this match.

A picture book stood quietly on the shelf of a children’s bookstore, waiting for young readers to read it.
One day, a little girl came. She sat down on the ground and read the picture book with interest. Then she put it
back on the shelf, took out her pocket and said to the book, “I love you so much, but I can’t afford you. My father is
working out of the town, and my mother is ill now. You see, my pocket is empty. I have no money.”
The next day, the little girl came again. She read the picture book again, and wrote a note, reading: “I want to
read you once more, but I can’t come tomorrow because I will go to the hospital to take care of my mother. Can
you fly over to my house like a bird? The note has my home address on it.” She put the note into the book, and left
the bookstore.
How the picture book wanted to fly into the arms of the little girl! Books needed readers who liked them most,
just like the little girl needed her mother. But it was not a bird. It could not fly, and its hardcover could not flap like
wings. The picture book could do nothing but huddle (蜷缩) in the middle of the books, waiting for the girl to come
again.
One day, there was a big boy who loved reading. He put all the books he liked into his shopping basket,
including the picture book. His mother paid the bill for all the books without saying anything.
The big boy had his own bookshelf in his room, with all kinds of books ranked neatly on it. He began to read
one book after another that he had bought. When he got to the picture book, he found the note. He was so surprisedthat he gave it to his mother. His mother read it and was deeply touched, knowing that there was a little girl who
loved the picture book but could not afford it. They resolved to deliver the picture book to the address that the little
girl had written on the note.

My Father’s Son
It’s hard being an astronaut’s son. I often wonder how my father ever had a son like me. I mean he’s so special
and so good at everything he does. But I’m just an average eleven-year-old kid.
Nowadays I dream about being a famous writer, but I used to dream about doing something spectacular to
impress my father and make him proud of me — something like rescuing a child from a burning building or
chasing a robber away from an old lady.
I was daydreaming in school one morning. I was daydreaming about being some kind of hero when my friend
Ellen reminded me of my English teacher’s announcement about a Father’s Day essay contest.
“I hope we have a winner right here in my English class,” she said. “There are three prizes for each of you.”
When I got home, I kissed my mom quickly. Then I went upstairs to my room and sat down with a pen and a
pad of paper. I started to think about what I would write.
How did I see my father? Hmm.
I saw him teaching me how to use a bat and how to throw a baseball.
I remembered how he hugged me for hours when my dog Spotty was hit and killed by a car. And Iremembered how he sat and tried to explain death to me when Grandpa Bob died.
These were the things I was going to write about my dad. To me, he wasn’t just a world-famous astronaut. He
was my dad.
I wrote about all these memories and put them in my essay. I handed it in the next day and was surprised to
find out that the winning essays would be read in the auditorium on Thursday night. All the parents and students
were incited.
My parents and I went to school Thursday night. One of our neighbors said, “I bet you’ll win the contest,
David. I bet you wrote what it’s like to be the son of an astronaut, and you’re the only one in town who could write
about that.”

Up in Lights
For some, putting up Christmas lights is a holiday chore. But for the Pascucci family, it was always a big day
of celebration.
Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, Sara’s father, Anthony Pascucci, 60, woke up excited to string lights
and decorate the lawn of his home and didn’t take them down until February, being the only house with Christmas
decorations in the community. Anthony Pascucci believed the brightness of the lights could counter (抵消) some of
the darkness of the past year with COVID-19.
In 2020, as in every other year, Anthony Pascucci strung colorful lights all around their roof until it looked as
if sparkles were dripping onto the hallway. Sara’s brother, Anthony Jr. helped with the wiring, while Sara hung
ornaments (装饰物) on the tree inside the house playing the song “White Christmas” over and over to keep
everyone in the spirit. The whole place looked like a scene from a pop-up Christmas storybook.
On Christmas Eve, the whole house twinkled with lights and gifts were piled under the tree. Everyone was
looking forward to overly stuffed clams——a typical Italian feast. But most of all, they looked forward to enjoying
another Christmas together as a family.
However, Sara received a call from her colleague who had tested positive for COVID-19. Though Sara didn’t
have any symptoms she decided to get tested right away, as well as the whole family. When their results came backthey all learned that they also had COVID-19. Several weeks later on early February, Anthony Pascucci passed
away after getting lung infections.
In addition to helping to plan the funeral for her father, Sara had to tackle a seemingly endless list of difficult
to-dos. It was almost too much to bear.

Alexis Langlois, who manages a large farm, heard her neighbor crazily knocking on her front door on a
Monday afternoon.
“There’s an emergency”, Amber Countryman yelled. “The horses are stuck in the water.” Langlois was struck
with “absolute panic”. She threw on her winter boots — without socks — and rushed toward the small pond on the
80-acre property. She was surprised by what she saw: four horses were in the water up to their necks in 10 feet of
ice water.
She immediately called 911.While waiting for help to arrive, “people just started showing up,” she said.
“Neighbors were pouring in. People came with ropes, chainsaws, shovels and pick axes.”
“I grabbed a bunch of supplies,” said Countryman, whose two teenagers and their friend also as sited with the
effort.
“It was-8℃that day,” she said, adding that she brought out handwarmers and water for the helpers.
Everyone was determined to get the horses out of the pond — which is about 15feetwide.
Beneath a six-inch layer of ice, the water was “just barely above freezing”, said Chris Yerkes, the South
Kalispell Fire Department chief who rushed to the pond with about a dozen volunteer personnel.
When the firefighters arrived, neighbors had already attempted to pave a path through the ice toward the edge
of the pond using pick axes, sledgehammers and shovels, and “we continued with that effort.” Yerkes said.
Unfortunately, “as we got closer to the edge, we realized there was about three to four inches of mud.”The thick layer of mud — which the rescuers couldn’t cut through — blocked the horses from climbing out.
Firefighters enlisted additional support from Flathead County Animal Control, as well as staff from local equestrian
organization Rebecca Farm.
“There had to have been at least 60 people here,” Langlois said. “It was very swift action on everybody’s
part.”

Brrrring! The bell rang as Sam tapped out a quick beat on his desk. “I’ve figured it out, finally!” He thought.
He couldn’t wait to play it for Mia.
Sam and his neighbor Mia had been working for weeks on a song for Saturday’s band competition. Their song
had a beautiful tune, but Sam and Mia had been struck on the ending. Just now, Sam worked it out! When Sam
rushed out of the classroom, he noticed a familiar face jogging towards him down the hall. It was Mike, his best
friend.
”Hey, buddy!” Mike greeted Sam with a bright smile as he always did. “Ready for some training after school?
I’ve been working on my jumper.” He turned around swiftly and shot an imaginary ball into the air. Panic suddenly
stroke Sam. Uh-Oh! He had forgotten all about the basketball. He was supposed to practice basketball in the court
(球场) after school with Mike, which had been agreed the week before. He didn’t want to fail Mike, but he was
dying to try out the new ending. Maybe if he had a reason to skip.
“Hey, Mike,” Sam said, “I don’t feel so great.” He covered his mouth with his hands and gave a small cough
for effect. ”Perhaps, another time?” “Sure!” Mike said, with obvious disappointment. “Take care of yourself, OK?”Sam nodded and watched his friend dribble (运球) an invisible ball down the hallway.
“Lying was easier than I imagined,” Sam thought. “I can finish the song and Mikes feelings aren’t hurt.” The
moment Sam returned home, he ran straight, towards the basement. Crash! The drum shook as Sam hit it a final
time. “What do you think?” He looked at Mia hopefully. “Perfect!” She said excitedly.
“That sounded great, guys.” Mike stood on Sam’s basement steps with his eyebrows raised. “Are you feeling
better now? I worried about you so much, so I brought your favorite movie to you.” Mike took out a small case.

How to Fix a Mistake
After many continuous days of steady downpour, the sun finally came out on a Sunday morning. My friend
Allan and I decided to play catch in my yard. We were having fun throwing the ball back and forth.
“Run! Nice catch!” It had been days since we enjoyed ourselves. Then, I threw the ball too hard and Allan
missed his catch. The ball flew like lightning, crossed the yard and hit my neighbor’s window. We heard the big
sound. Crash! Smash! The window broke into many pieces.
Allan turned pale, and a look of panic crossed his face. He froze, too scared to move an inch. Without a second
thought, I grabbed his hand, whispering, “Come with me!” We ran into my backyard and hid behind a stack of hay.
It seemed to be a place of safety. However, my heart was still pounding hard, as if it were about to pop.
Mr. Jones, the neighbour, who was a seventy-year-old man, lived alone. Though he was poor, he was well
loved in the neighborhood for he always helped those in need.
Obviously, he heard the big sound, too. He came out of his house, with a ball in his hands. It was exactly our
ball! Did he recognize who the ball belonged to? With butterflies in my stomach, I breathed deeply. In the
meantime, Mr. Jones looked around, trying to see who threw the ball. Of course, no one was outside. He gazed the
window for a while, and then the ball. Finally, he went back into his house.
A few days later, I saw that Mr. Jones had repaired the broken glass. He was sitting outside. When he saw me,he waved at me. I felt ashamed as I waved back at him. I knew what I should do, but I was afraid to do it.
Later, my mom and I were talking and she told me about the broken window.

The 16th of September was my cousin’s birthday, He is 4 years younger than me and his birthday is just seven
days before mine. Those seven days were the worst days of my life. I thought “Isn’t seven supposed to be a lucky
number?” and wondered who came up with that idea.
That evening my mother sent him and me to get some stuff from the store so she could make him a cake. On
every other Sunday at this time of the day I’d be on the soccer field kicking the ball around with my older friends,
but instead this Sunday found me walking to the shop with my cousin.
On the way to the store my cousin spotted an apricot(杏) at the edge of a branch, It was as large as an apple
and as yellow as a new crayon fresh from the box. The rule was whoever spotted it first owned it. Even if you
climbed the tree to get it, it still did not belong to you. I decided to go to get the beautiful, delicious-looking fruit
for my cousin, seeing that it was his birthday.
I started to map out my course of action as to how I was going to get this fruit. I could have hit it with rocks
until it fell, but no, it was too beautiful to be bruised(碰伤) by the force of a stone thrown at it. I continued to climb
on to a fence which was directly parallel to the apricot tree. At the top of the fence I paused a while to take a look
around. “Wow! Cool view from 12 feet off the ground.” My cousin laughed and told me to hurry up and get it so
we could go home. My next step was to jump from the fence, catch the main branch, and then climb to victory.

On Christmas Eve, I called my mom from the bakery where I worked part-time, telling her that I was working
with a couple of co-workers. The store was about to close. The person from a local charity who was scheduled to
pick up the leftover (剩下的) bread had not shown up.
I was worried about what to do with the food, so I called my mom and she suggested I call the manager to ask
for advice. The manager told me to throw the leftovers into the garbage. They were approximately 1,500 dollars’
worth of fresh baked goods.
It seemed completely wrong for all this good food to go to waste, so I called Mom again and talked about
where we could take it. She told me that a new homeless shelter had just opened in our city, so Mom called and
asked if the homeless shelter needed the free baked goods. An excited staff member said, “Yes, please!”
Mom drove to the bakery. We loaded up the van (小型货车) with my co-workers and Mom drove to the
homeless shelter. As we walked toward the entrance, a woman opened the door for us. She thanked us for what we
were doing and said she was really grateful for her new temporary home. She introduced herself and told us her
friends called her Star. We chatted for a while on the sidewalk with light snow falling around us. Star said that
moving off the streets into the shelter had saved her life.
Star told us that she had decided her job in life was to help and protect people. She spent her days looking out
for those who needed help. She tried to do kind things for others whenever she could. Then she asked me for a
favor. She showed me a book that a friend had given her when she’d been living on the streets. She wanted to tell

I saw children playing in the playground happily, but I was never allowed there. It wasn’t just me, but all my
other friends. When I was little, I didn’t care about it much, but when I grew up things seemed to change. Me, my
family, and friends were all Africans and mainly we all had dark skin, which was the reason for all this.
My mama would always say, “Things will change, Berhane, you will one day see the world.” What she said
turned out to be right years later. But at that time, I doubted about her words because of the rules of my school
without knowing I would make friends with a white girl.
The school I studied had two parts which were separated by a wall. I never knew what was like on the other
side of the school and neither did my friends. But there was one thing that we know for sure, if you try to find out
what was going on the other side, you will be punished.
One day I was playing with a ball during break with Walter and Grady. I kicked the ball so hard that it went to
the other side. We decided to bring the ball back because we had no money to buy another.
Making sure that everything was okay, we went to the other side. We walked along the wall. By the time we
got close to the ball, we were all dirty and hurt. But all our efforts were a waste because a group of white children
already got the ball.
They were wondering where it had come from. We were pushing and fighting each other, saying, “You get the
ball!” “No, you get it!” I was told to get the ball because I was the one who had kicked the ball to the other side. I
stood there quietly watching the kids. There was a girl and two boys, their backs toward us. Their hairs were all
combed and mine were all curled up. I was a girl with dark skin, while they had light skin. We were completely

When I was young, there was an apple orchard (果园) near my home. The man owning the orchard employed
some migrant families to gather apples and care for the trees. They worked hard but got paid and fed little.
Once my grandmother struck up a conversation with one of the young women. Her name was Maria. She and
her husband, Tony, were expecting a baby. “We’re going to stay with my parents,” Maria said. “We work here to
earn money for the bus ticket.”
“They’re going to need a lot of things when the baby comes,” Grandmother told me when we got home. “Let’s
ask God to send angels to help that young couple.”
“Angels?” I was surprised.
“If we do our part, angels will do the rest.” she said. Grandmother went to the closet and brought out a box
filled with S & H trading stamps, which can be used to buy things. She spilled the pile of stamps on to the
kitchen table. “You can see I’ve been saving up the stamps for just the right purchase.”
We sat down at the table and looked through the baby section of the S & H content. My eyes fell on a
bassinet (摇篮) with a silk canopy (罩篷) over it. “That’s what a young mother will need,” Grandmother said.
“Let’s see if we save 20 books of stamps, we can get a bassinet.”
In the coming weeks, we tried hard to collect the stamps, but before Maria and Tony left, we were three books
short. And there were no angels helping us with the stamps either.
“Open the content,” Grandmother said. “Let’s pick a bassinet we can afford.” We chose one without a canopy.
The next day we went to the Green Stamp store to get it. “Maria will love this one just as much.”
Grandmother assured me as she pushed the door open. I couldn’t help but feel disappointed. Grandmother
gave the clerk the information and handed over the 17 books of stamps we saved. The clerk walked to the
backroom and returned empty-handed. “I’m sorry,” she said. “We don’t have such a bassinet for the 17 books of
stamps.”

Ellie was only eight years old when a tsunami(海啸)hit her old neighborhood. She had been out of town on a
school trip when disaster struck, but her parents, Jude and Rachel, were lost during the tragedy.
With her house left in complete ruin, all Ellie had left was the bag she had packed for her school trip. As the
young girl had nowhere else to go, her grandmother Louisa welcomed Ellie into her home. Louisa lived in a
different state to Ellie’s hometown, which meant that Ellie needed to transfer to a new school. She felt alone and
isolated, away from her old friends and in a new environment.
Ellie’s grandmother was already retired and barely had enough money to cover their needs. To make matters
worse, Jude and Rachel’s belongings were destroyed in the tsunami. Louisa couldn’t afford to buy Ellie new
clothes. Therefore, when Ellie’s clothes were visibly small as she grew taller, she felt very embarrassed. She didn’t
want to attend class and would often hide in the bathrooms. After school, she would run home before her
classmates could see her.
Ellie kept a notebook full of designs. Actually, Ellie’s mother was a seamstress (女裁缝)and taught Ellie how
to sew when she was very young. Ellie often dreamed of how she would dress if she were rich.
Meanwhile, Ellie’s teacher, Mrs. Roberts, began to notice her abnormality from class. One day, she decided to
get to the bottom of the situation and called Louisa. That’s when the older woman tearfully explained to Mrs.
Roberts that Ellie had lost everything and felt self-conscious(难为情的). “I’ve found some of her drawings about
the clothes design. I think she’s ashamed that I can’t afford to buy her new clothes for school,” Louisa explained.
Mrs. Roberts had a lot of sympathy for the girl, who had already suffered due to the tsunami.

Guyo kicked the ground, a cloud of red dust flying in the air. “What’s wrong, Guyo?” Guyo looked up to see
his grandfather. “Father won’t let me drive cattle. He says I’m too little. But I really want to help the family,” said
Guyo. “You can help me get honey,” said Grandfather. Guyo’s face lit up. His grandfather smiled, “We’ll gather
honey the way our village has gathered honey for years.” He opened his hand. It held a whistle(口哨).“What’s
that,Grandfather? ” “It’s a honeyguide whistle. When we use it,a honeyguide will come and lead us to a hidden
honeycomb(蜂巢)”. He handed Guyo the whistle. “Call one.”
Guyo blew the whistle hard, creating a beautiful sound. Before long, a gray-brown bird flew to a nearby
branch. She called many times. Once she had the attention of Grandfather and Guyo, she flew off toward the west.
Guyo was eager to follow. His grandfather picked up a container and said, “Let’s go.” They hurried through the dry
brush, always keeping the honeyguide being viewed. “Why do honeyguides help us?” Guyo asked. “They are
experts in finding honeycombs. But because they’re small, bee stings(蜇伤)would kill them. They need our help to
get what's inside the honeycomb.” Guyo and his grandfather followed the bird for half an hour. Finally, the
honeyguide flew toward a hole in a mud wall. “We’re here,” said Grandfather. Guyo’s heart beat faster and faster as
they approached the hole. A group of angry bees guarded the entrance, making much noise.
Grandfather gathered some small sticks. “Help me build a fire in front of the hole. The smoke will calm the
bees.” When the smoke approached the bees, the noise disappeared. Grandfather tried to push his hand into the
hole, but it wouldn’t fit. He said to Guyo, “You should be able to reach the honeycomb.” Guyo was afraid. What if
the bees stung him? He looked at his grandfather. He couldn’t disappoint him.
