I am an art-on-the-cart teacher for now.My 8th-grade boys don’t open doors for me.The girls
do,however.So do the 6th-,7th-,and 9th-grade boys,but not those 8th-grade boys.It’s a
strange phenomenon that I’m sure is explained by science somewhere. But when I’m walking
through campus with my rolling cart filled to the brim(边沿),my hands full,my backpack on,
and the wind blowing the door,it’s hard to pull it open for me.The boys just go on through
without stopping to offer help. What these boys need is some empathy(同理心)! Looking at art can
help with that.
Last semester in a photography unit for my 8th-graders,I brought out the “I am” character
poem activity from my pack of printable worksheets to study the work of Dorothea Lange, the
mastermind behind the Migrant Mother and other powerful photographs from the Great
Depression.
As an art teacher,it is important for me to give my students experience connecting with
works of art, which includes connecting with the characters and people in the artworks.Dorothea
Lange was a photographer hired by the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security
Administration to document the lives of migrant workers, and displaced families.Because her
photographs were government-funded,they were offered for free to newspapers across the
country, and her photographs were seen nationwide.
She had a masterful way of capturing emotion in her subjects,so her photographs are an
excellent way for students to practice empathy while also connecting with the art,the past, and
the people in the photograph.
Once we finished with all of the group presentations,I asked what all of the photographs had
in common and what we can learn about the photographer based on all of these photographs. This
launched us into a lesson on Dorothea Lange, art during the Great Depression, and a debate over
whether or not the camera has the ability to capture the essence(精髓) of a person.
1.What does the author think of the 8th-grade boys?
A.Sensitive. B.Hard-working. C.Unsympathetic. D.Hopeless.
2.Why did the author introduce Dorothea Lange to her class?
A.To appreciate the Migrant Mother.
B.To help the boys relate to others.
C.To dig into the Great Depression.
D.To prepare students for a debate.3.What can we learn about Dorothea Lange’s photographs?
A.They were easily available.
B.They appealed primarily to the 8th-graders.
C.They were highly profitable.
D.They revealed the essence of the subject.
4.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.Photograph:A Subject for Debate
B.Shaping Identity with Works of Art
C.Photograph:A Reflection on the Past
D.Exploring Empathy with Works of Art

Finger painting is an art that most people have experienced in childhood. But there are still
people who know little about this art form.Finger painting is a simple activity that involves dipping
fingers in paints and then using fingers to create objects and shapes on a piece of paper. All you
need is a table at elbow height,a few sheets of plain paper, and a few bottles of watercolor.
When engaging kids in this activity, one should use non-toxic(无毒的) paints only.If not
available in the market readily,non-toxic paints can be made at home easily.Preferably, the
paints should also be eatable.Finger paints come in bright colors and can be purchased relatively
inexpensively.Adults can save money by making their own finger paints using a mixture of
cornstarch,food coloring and water.
It is a common fallacy that finger painting is for children alone;rather it’s an activity that
can be enjoyed by adults in equal measure.Adults can use rubber gloves while painting to avoid
dirty marks of paints on their hands. When a group of people are gathered for an exercise of finger
painting,it can be a great way of creating a bond between the group.Art and painting parties are a
popular concept in the West.Organizations can also use finger painting as a team-building activity
by making participants paint together on a large canvas(画布).
There’s no limit to the expression of feelings in finger painting. All one needs to do is to go
all out and put all their feelings on a piece of paper by dipping their fingers in paints. While
painting, one may unconsciously choose colors that reflect their emotions. For example, you may
choose the color red to express your anger or green to express hope.At times you may be
confused, and the painting will help you describe your confused state of mind.Once you get your
emotions on paper, you are likely to feel relieved.
So what are you waiting for? Plan a finger-painting session soon, and experience the joy.
5.What can we know about finger painting?
A.Most people loved it in their childhood.
B.The preparation for it is quite difficult.
C.It is easy to carry out.D.Kids learn it much faster than adults.
6.What should people do when there are kids involved in finger painting?
A.Prepare safe paints for them.
B.Have parents stay with them.
C.Use paints of bright colors.
D.Buy inexpensive paints.
7.What does the underlined word “fallacy” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Goal. B.Secret. C.Principle. D.Misunderstanding.
8.What does the example in paragraph 4 show?
A.Finger painters can find artistic inspiration from emotions.
B.Finger painting provides freedom of self-expression.
C.Finger painting shows people’s habits correctly.
D.Finger painters have a limited choice of colors.

As an artist who shares her journey on social media,I’m often asked by curious followers
how to begin an art journey.Unfortunately, there is no magic list I can offer.I do remember,
though, what it was like to be a complete beginner. So I’ve put together some good tips for
starting an art journey.
·Start small.I suggest using a sketchbook(素描本) for small studies.These small studies
provide inspiration and may be a springboard for more complex works in the future.__1__ You’ll
want to look back on your journey to see how far you’ve come.
·Paint often and paint from life. There’s no better way to improve than to put in those brush
miles.Whether you paint still lifes, portraits,or landscapes, paint from life as much as
possible.__2__
·Continually challenge yourself to try something new.__3__ Artistic growth can be a bit
painful.Welcome to the club;we’ve all been there.I love taking on challenges.I once took up a
challenge to create a painting every day for a month and post the works online.
·__4__ Seeking and accepting constructive feedback(反馈) is crucial to growth.I post my
work on social media and,in turn, have met some of the kindest people. They make me feel
valued and respected,no matter my level of artistic ability.
The journey you’re on won’t follow a straight path.__5__ Push through, give it time and
put in the effort. You will harvest the rewards of an artistic life.
A.Get out of your comfort zone.
B.Make career plans and set goals.
C.Don’t throw away your beginner art.D.Share your work if you feel comfortable doing so.
E.You’ll hit roadblocks, and you’ll feel discouraged at times.
F.Evaluate your performance and,if needed,redefine your role.
G.You’ll develop that painting muscle memory that only comes with repetition.
