The Fitting-in of Suzy Khan
The first time I saw Suzy Khan, I knew I had to help her. She was really small for her age of 12. The boys in
my class often 1 about her and laughed their heads off. She would open a book, pretending to read, with
tears dropping on the open page.
All I knew was that she was an orphan (孤儿) from Africa. She had just been adopted by a family in town who
2 that the best way for her to learn American ways of life was to be with American kids. I looked down at this
3 girl and promised myself that somehow I would help her.
But how could I help her fit in with us? There had to be a way.
One day, when I went into the classroom, I saw that Suzy had 4 her geography book to a picture of a
train, and in her notebook, she had made a perfect copy.
I was surprised and thought that she could do something in the coming 5 show. So, I took her to see
the art teacher, Miss Parker, and showed her what Suzy had drawn. “It’s wonderful,” said Miss Parker, who then
showed us a poster she had painted for the talent show. “I need more of these, but I just don’t have enough 6 .
Could you help me, Suzy?”
On the day of the talent show, Suzy’s 7 were everywhere — all over the hall and all over the school,
each one different.
“And finally,” said Mr Brown, the schoolmaster, at the end of the show, “we have a(n) 8 award. I’m
1 / 19sure you’ve all noticed the wonderful posters.” Everyone nodded. “One of our own students 9 them.”
I could hear everyone whispering, “Who in our school could draw 10 well?”
Mr. Brown waited a while before saying, “Since this student worked so hard on the posters, she deserves a
prize, too. Our mystery (神秘) artist is our new student — Suzy Khan!”

High school, for most teenagers, is a space where new adventures and challenges begin. I clearly remember
my first day of high school. As I entered the school gate, I was greeted by a crowd of students. The hallways were
filled with talking and laughter. It was a lot to handle, and I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean. I held my schedule
tightly, trying to find the right classroom. My heart raced as I was scared of getting lost.
My first class was English, and as I walked in, I spotted familiar faces from my previous school. I breathed a
sigh of relief as I took my seat, surrounded by friendly smiles. My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself
7 / 19and made everyone feel comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and
encouraged us to share our thoughts and ideas. The next class was mathematics, which happened to be my weakest
subject. I felt a tight feeling in my stomach as I entered the classroom, but my maths teacher, Mr Smith, turned out
to be very patient. He promised us that we would learn and improve together. His words of support made me feel
more relaxed, and I began to believe that I could overcome my maths struggles.
During lunchtime, I sat with a group of students who quickly became my friends. We shared stories, and talked
about our expectations for high school. It was during this time that I realised that high school wasn’t just about
academic subjects; it was also about building friendships and making lasting memories.
The rest of the day flew by with a variety of classes, faces, and experiences. My first day of high school was
filled with moments of anxiety, joy, and the promise of new beginnings.

26.How did the author feel when entering the maths class?
A.Excited. B.Anxious. C.Relaxed. D.Confident.
27.What did the author realise during lunchtime?
A.High school only focused on studying.
B.High school was an extremely challenging place.
C.High school was full of old friends and classmates.
D.High school was also about wonderful social experiences.

As I entered the school gate, I was greeted by a crowd of students. The
hallways were filled with talking and laughter. It was a lot to handle, and I felt like a tiny fish in a vast ocean. I held
8 / 19my schedule tightly, trying to find the right classroom. My heart raced as I was scared of getting lost.(当我走进学
My English teacher, Mrs Johnson, introduced herself and made everyone feel
comfortable. She explained what we would be studying during the semester and encouraged us to share our

One evening in 1951, astronomer William Morgan was walking home from Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin
when he looked up at the night sky and had “a creative insight burst”. It solved one of the greatest mysteries of
astronomy.
An “aha! Moment”, such as Morgan’s great insight, is a new idea that arrives suddenly, often bursting into an
ongoing stream of thought. It may pop up while someone is actively trying to solve a problem.
Individuals tend to have more analytical (分析型的) or insightful thinking; we aren’t limited to one or the
other. It’s up to the mood. Imagine you are in Africa 25,000 years ago. You see a lion a couple of meters away and
are seized with fear. Your thinking immediately becomes very careful and analytical because if you make one
mistake, you are finished. Can the lion see me or hear me? If I run, is the lion close enough to catch up?
You manage to escape. That evening you are back in the cave, sitting by the fire and sharing food with your
people. You are enjoying safety. In your protected shelter, you can have creative thoughts and do something
imaginative. So 25,000 years later, we find the innovative stone tools and breathtaking cave paintings that inspired
9 / 19future generations.
An obvious way to increase insightfulness is therefore to relax when you aren’t anxious or rushed. Another
way is expansion in space: When you are in a large room or the great outdoors under a starry sky, as Morgan was
— your attention expands in the large space. You will consider the whole rather than the parts, thus enhancing
insightful thinking.
Modern society’s unrelenting demand for productivity and speed often rejects insight. Even so, remember the
value and power of insights and the conditions that spark them.
As Morgan shows, when it comes to an “aha! Moment”, the sky is the limit.
28.How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By sharing a secret to success. B.By raising a new idea.
C.By describing an astronomer. D.By telling a true story.
29.Why does the author refer to “Africa 25,000 years ago”?
A.To stress the importance of insightful thinking.
B.To illustrate the necessity of analytical thinking.
C.To prove the power of creativity and imagination.
D.To show the influence of mood on thinking styles.
30.Which of the following situations might help boost an insight?
A.Studying hard for a math exam. B.Taking photos on a vast grassland.
C.Working on the computer in an office. D.Promoting products in a supermarket.
31.What does the underlined word “unrelenting” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Basic. B.Typical. C.Endless. D.Unreasonable.
One evening in 1951, astronomer William Morgan was walking home from Yerkes
Observatory in Wisconsin when he looked up at the night sky and had ‘a creative insight burst’. It solved one of the
greatest mysteries of astronomy.
根据第三段“Individuals tend to have more analytical (分析型的) or insightful thinking; we aren’
10 / 19t limited to one or the other. It’s up to the mood.(个体往往有更多的分析性思维或洞察力思维;我们不限于其中
Another way is expansion in space: When you are in a large room or the great
outdoors under a starry sky, as Morgan was — your attention expands in the large space. You will consider the
whole rather than the parts, thus enhancing insightful thinking.
根据画线词后文“demand for productivity and speed(对效率和速度的需求)”及“often rejects
D
Social media has been around for years now, and most of us may describe it as any Internet medium (媒体)
that can be used to share information with others. But what exactly is so “social” about sitting before a computer
blogging (发 博 客 ) for days without anybody reading it, or scrolling (滚 屏 ) through your Facebook feed of
information from 500 friends you hardly know? If you ask me, it can be way more anti-social than anything.
Social media is not a “thing”. It’s not just Facebook, WeChat and Weibo. It’s more of a frame of mind (心态)
and a state of being. It’s about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However,
we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually destroy those relationships.
Social media isn’t about numbers. When someone says “social media”, web giants like Facebook, Twitter,
WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more
followers, more everything. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go. So, social media
is not just about lots of people aimlessly pushing around lots of information.
Social media needs to have an “IRL” factor——an Internet expression standing for “In Real Life”. It should
affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn’t be an end in itself. It was built to
improve your actual social life, in real life. Take for example an event that a person attends because they are invited
by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page. Something like that definitely has the IRL factor.
Likewise, a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to
someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists. Social media is not a
11 / 19specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It’s all about creating
meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.
32.The writer thinks that social media should be_______.
A.a number of websites where people communicate
B.a set of social tools like Facebook, WeChat and Weibo
C.a collection of online applications where ideas are exchanged
D.a group name for online platforms used to strengthen meaningful relationships
33.According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor?
A.Updating Facebook every now and then.
B.Following new friends in real life on Facebook.
C.Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo.
D.Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about.
34.What is the author’s main purpose of writing this article?
A.To explain the importance of social media.
B.To inform the negative effects of social media.
C.To call on readers to use social media to better their real social life.
D.To encourage readers to communicate with others in real life more often.
Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see
what other people are doing. It’s all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may
Social media needs to have an “IRL” factor——an Internet expression standing
for “In Real Life”. It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn’t be an end in
itself. It was built to improve your actual social life, in real life.(社交媒体需要有一个“IRL”元素——一个代表
“现实生活”的网络俚语。它应该影响一个人在线下的想法和行为。毕竟,社交媒体本身不应该是目的。它是
12 / 19为了改善你在现实生活中的社交生活。)”可知,在微博上读了一篇故事后,和朋友一起参观博物馆,含有 IRL
因素,故选 C。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see
what other people are doing. It’s all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may

Many senior high students share the same goal: improving their English language skills. 35 Here’s
a step-by-step approach that works for everyone.
◎Know about your purpose.
Start by figuring out why you want to improve your English skills. For struggling ones, it’s important to
master classroom dialogues to pass exams and build confidence. For top students, English fluency develops
academic excellence and prepares them for cross-cultural communication. 36
◎Involve yourself in real-life practice.
For struggling students this could mean practicing role-playing simple conversations with classmates. 37 .
In spite of your current level, view these exercises as stepping stones to build confidence for broader English use.
Seek opportunities to apply your skills in real-world settings where English is used.
◎ 38
Take advantage of language-learning apps, online courses, and English-speaking communities to build daily
habits. Spend 10 minutes memorizing vocabulary with a learning app after breakfast. Take a 10-minute online
grammar course after lunch. Watch short English videos for 10 minutes after dinner to practice listening. Whatever
you choose to do, the key is to keep the habits you’ve formed.
◎Celebrate small wins.
Language learning takes time, so celebrate your progress! Treat yourself to a chocolate after remembering 10
new words, or share your achievements when you finish daily practice. 39 Each improvement, whether
it’s mastering a grammar rule or reaching your desired score, is a step toward success.
13 / 19A.Fall into daily habits.
B.Improve online learning skills.
C.This builds confidence and keeps you going.
D.Follow these key steps to improve your reading skills.

Everyone feels stressed from time to time. But what is stress? How does it affect your health? And what can
you do about it?
Stress is how the brain and body respond to any demand. Every type of demand or stressor — such as
exercise, work, school, or major life changes — can be stressful. Stress can affect your health. Yet not all stress is
bad. Stress can motivate people to prepare or perform, like when they need to take a test or interview for a new job.
Stress can even be life-saving in some situations. In response to danger, your pulse quickens, you breathe faster,
your muscles tense, your brain uses more oxygen and increases activity — all functions aimed at survival.
However, health problems can occur if the stress response goes on for too long or becomes chronic (长期的).
With chronic stress, those same life-saving responses in your body can suppress (抑制) immune, digestive, sleep,
and reproductive systems, which may cause them to stop working normally. Some people may experience digestive
symptoms (症状), while others may have headaches, sleeplessness, sadness or anger.
The following are some tips that may help you cope with stress:
●Recognize the Signs of your body’s response to stress, such as difficulty sleeping, being easily angered,
feeling depressed, or having low energy.
15 / 19●Get Regular Exercise. Just 30 minutes per day of walking can help improve your mood and reduce stress.
●Try a Relaxing Activity. Explore stress coping programs, which may include meditation, yoga, tai chi, or
other gentle exercises. For some stress-related conditions, these approaches are used in addition to other forms of
treatment. Schedule fixed times for these and other healthy and relaxing activities.
●Set Goals and Priorities Decide what must get done and what can wait, and learn to say no to
new tasks if they are putting you into overload. Note what you have finished at the end of the day, not what you
have been unable to do.
●Stay Connected with people who can provide emotional and other support. To reduce stress, ask for help
from friends, teachers or family members.
If you’re stressed out and can not function well, do ask for professional help.
40.According to the passage, what are the causes of stress?
41.What are the benefits of stress?
42.If people suffer from stress for a very long time, what physical symptoms might they experience?
43.Suppose your friend Jim will take an important exam in a few days, and he feels quite stressed right now. Please
give him one piece of advice on relieving stress, and explain why. (In about 20-30 words.)
40.According to the passage, stress can be caused by various demands or stressors, including
exercise, work, school, and major life changes. 41.Stress can motivate people to prepare or perform better,
such as when preparing for a test or a job interview. It can also be life-saving in dangerous situations by triggering a
fight-or-flight response. 42.If people suffer from chronic stress, they might experience digestive issues,
headaches, sleeplessness, sadness, or anger. 43.Jim, try to get regular exercise, even just a 30-minute walk
daily. Physical activity can boost your mood and reduce stress, helping you feel more relaxed and focused before
the exam.
Stress is how the brain and body respond to any demand. Every type of demand
or stressor — such as exercise, work, school, or major life changes—can be stressful.(压力是大脑和身体对任何
According to
the passage, stress can be caused by various demands or stressors, including exercise, work, school, and major life
changes.
Stress can motivate people to prepare or perform, like when they need to take a
test or interview for a new job. Stress can even be life-saving in some situations. In response to danger, your pulse
quickens, you breathe faster, your muscles tense, your brain uses more oxygen and increases activity — all
Stress
can motivate people to prepare or perform better, such as when preparing for a test or a job interview. It can also be
life-saving in dangerous situations by triggering a fight-or-flight response.
With chronic stress, those same life-saving responses in your body can suppress
(抑制) immune, digestive, sleep, and reproductive systems, which may cause them to stop working normally. Some
people may experience digestive symptoms (症状), while others may have headaches, sleeplessness, sadness or
If people suffer from chronic
stress, they might experience digestive issues, headaches, sleeplessness, sadness, or anger.
Jim, try to get regular exercise, even just a 30-minute walk daily. Physical activity can boost your mood and
reduce stress, helping you feel more relaxed and focused before the exam.
