                              A
Long ago, near the village of Hedley, there lived a strange and playful trickster (骗子),
known as the Hedley Kow. Sometimes it looked like an ordinary object. Sometimes it
looked like a donkey or a goat.
One evening, as an old woman went along the path, she saw an old iron pot lying in
the ditch. “Fancy that,” she said. “Nobody seems to want this old pot. I will take it
home and plant pretty flowers in it.”
When she tried to lift it, she saw that it was full of gold pieces. “Well, now, if that
doesn't beat all,” she said. “I'm rich! I can buy a fine house and fancy clothes.”
The pot was heavy, so she tied her shawl around it and began to drag it home. After
a while, she stopped to rest. When she looked in the pot, she was amazed to see that it
was full of silver pieces!
“Oh, my God!” she said. “Aren't I the lucky one! If it were gold, thieves would
have been after me. My friends might have been jealous. But I can hide these silver
pieces, take out a few at a time, and live like a queen.”
On she went, pulling the pot after her. She was nearing home now. At her gate, she
looked into the pot. What a surprise! The silver had changed into a lump (块) of iron.
“Iron,” she said. “Well, now! No one will be jealous or want to steal this from me. I
can use this iron to prop my door open and let in fresh air and sunlight. Lucky me!”
As soon as she said that, the pot began to grow and later it became a goat. Then it
jumped up and ran off down the road laughing.
“Fancy that!” said the old woman. “I believe I have seen the Hedley Kow! Not
many folks can say that, and that's a fact. I'll just sit up by my fire tonight thinking
about how lucky I was to see it for myself. I truly must be the luckiest person in the
world!”
56. Which of the following sayings can best describe this story?
   A. All good things come to an end.
   B. The early bird catches the worm.
   C. Content is better than riches.
   D. All bad luck goes away.
57. What does “the Hedley Kow” stand for in the eyes of the old woman?
   A. Glory. B. Honor. C. Misfortune. D. Luck.
58. From this passage we can know the old woman is ______.
   A. optimistic B. pessimistic
   C. strange D. mindless

Grammarphobia is the fear of grammar. This fear attacks almost everybody at one
time or another, and it's most likely to strike during English or language arts classes.
Even people who love reading and writing have been known to get feverish and insecure
when they are aware of the possibility of turning in homework with grammar or spelling
mistakes. Though writing may be enjoyable, being corrected is definitely not!
Grammarphobes, it's time to put your fears behind you.Grammar isn't that dreadful (可

怕的). Here's why.
Let's assume you like hearing and telling stories and that you enjoy joking with friends.
You probably also like emailing and instantmessaging. Well, what do you think makes
all these possible? Grammar!
Grammar is simply the art of putting words together to make sentences. Whenever you
use words to express yourself, you're using grammar. You do this all the time without
even thinking.
So why think about it? Because good grammar helps you convey the ideas you intend.
If your words aren't right, or if they are not in the right order, the person you are talking
to might get the wrong idea. This can have embarrassing results.
Grammar helps us understand each other. It's like a manual (手册) for assembling the
words in your head. You have to put your words together the right way if you want
them to make sense. They can't do what you want if they aren't put together correctly.
What if everybody you know had a different manual? How would you agree on what
others' words mean? People with different grammar manuals might be speaking different
languages.
Communicating is similar to playing cards. To make sense, we have to play the same
game, by the same rules. What are the rules for playing the game of English? You
already know most of them without having to open a book.
59. Grammarphobes refer to people who ________.
   A. consider grammar to be boring
   B. are worried about grammar homework
   C. mind grammar too much in writing
   D. are afraid of making grammar mistakes
60. The underlined word “assembling” in Paragraph 6 may mean ________.
   A. directing B. remembering C. bringing together D. looking for
61. What does playing cards have in common with communicating?
   A. Both need standards.
 B. Both can be interesting games.
   C. Both can be learned easily. D. Both can make sense for our life.
62. What might be the main idea of the passage?
   A. Forgetting grammar when writing.
B. Grammar is not horrible.
   C. Improving grammar through writing. D. What is grammarphobia?

Kataria is the founder of the worldwide laughter movement. The celebration of World
Laughter Day is a positive activity for world peace and is intended to build up a global
sense of brotherhood and friendship through laughter. The first “World Laughter Day”
gathering took place in Mumbai, India, on 11th January, 1998. 12,000 members from
India and international Laughter Clubs attended it. Now there are over 5,000 Laughter
Clubs worldwide on all 5 continents.

“HAPPYDEMIC” was the first World Laughter Day gathering outside India. It took
place on 9th January, two years after the Mumbai gathering. In Copenhagen, Denmark,
more than 10,000 people gathered at Town Hall Square. The event went into Guinness
Book of World Records.“World Laughter Day” is now organized on the first Sunday of
May every year. Hundreds of people gather worldwide on that day to laugh together.
Today, many people fear widespread international terrorism. The world has never faced
so much unrest before. People are at war within themselves. Laughter is a universal
language, which has the ability to unite humanity without religion. Laughter can build a
common connection between various religions and create a new world order. The idea
may sound overambitious(野心太大的), and maybe it is. But maybe it is not. It is our
deep belief that laughter and only laughter can unite the world, building up a global sense
of brotherhood and friendship.
Studies also say that laughter helps your body do the following: lower blood
pressure; lighten depression; reduce stress; work out the heart, especially for those who
are unable to perform physical exercise. So in life, when you can laugh, you should laugh
loudly and with your entire body—because it's good for you.
67. The purpose of celebrating World Laughter Day is ________.
   A. to build up a global sense of brotherhood and friendship through laughter
   B. to build a common connection between various religions
   C. to reduce stress and lighten depression
   D. to lower blood pressure
68. The first World Laughter Day gathering outside India took place________.
   A. on 11th January, 1998 B. on the first Sunday of May
   C. on 9th January, 1996 D. on 9th January, 2000
69. The author's attitude towards laughter movement is ________.
   A. positive B. negative
 C. uninterested D. objective
70. The passage is mainly about ________.
   A. World Laughter Day and its significance

People generally use spices (香料) every day when preparing meals. Most of these
spices are readily available in local supermarkets. However, in the 15th and 16th
centuries, spices were as valuable as gold or diamonds. Spices are small plants or parts of
plants, such as ginger, pepper, vanilla, and cinnamon, which are used to add flavor to our
food.__71__ Such a use for spices actually goes all the way back to Roman times. The
Romans used spices such as cumin and coriander to help preserve food.
The spices came to Europe from countries to the east, such as the islands in the East
Indies, Sri Lanka, and India. __72__ Because of the long journeys involved, they were
very expensive.
European sailors began to look for routes to these countries themselves in order to
bring back the spices by sea. In 1498, a Portuguese explorer named Vasco Da Gama
reached an East Indies island called Calicut. __73__ In 1519, another Spanish explorer,
Ferdinand Magellan, found a new trade route by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean,
around the southern tips of both South America and Africa, and back to Europe.

__74__ Portugal was the leader until the end of the 16th century. Spain was in
control during much of the next 100 years. Then, Holland took over. The Dutch
controlled the East Indies, but, in 1780, England defeated them in a famous war.__75__
They treated the people there badly and made them submit to the British government.
India finally became independent from Britain in the 1940s.Today, it is still called
“the land of spices”.In fact, at present India produces 2.5 million tons of spices each
year and produced more types of spices than any other country.
A.For centuries, Arab traders had carried the spices over land and sold them to European
countries.
B.For the next four centuries, Western countries raced each other for control of the spice
trade in these new countries, which they called the “New World”.
C.Though they might not be as valuable today as gold or diamonds, spices are still big
business around the globe.
D.Six years earlier, Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus had been looking for spices
when he discovered America.
E.The English then moved from the islands into India.
F.The history of spice is almost as old as human civilization.
G.In those times, spices also helped keep meat from spoiling.

作文One possible version:
Attention, please! I'm going to give you a summary of today's discussion about
whether we should go online in our spare time.
Most students think we can go online as much as possible in our spare time because
we are free then. Through the Internet, we can gain plenty of the newest knowledge and
the latest news at home and abroad. What's more, network offers us a convenient way to
communicate with each other. The Internet makes our lives outside class colorful and
various.
On the other hand, a few students partly agree to this idea. Going online is part of
our daily life but they suggest a time limit. They've found that more students are playing
computer games instead of studying their lessons. There're also a few students who are
often absent from school for days to go online.
I think we should make proper use of the Internet.
That's all. Thank you!

【参考范文】One possible version:
That's all. Thank you!
