I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a
bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I toucheddown in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran
like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I
thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I
was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted
for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队
列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big
smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my
Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of
helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash
machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the
message: "Out of order. Sorry."

Twenty-three years ago, in a small town in France, the then 12-year-old girl Zugay and her 17-year-old
elder sister Vanja lost their parents. They had nobody to depend on except their brother, who was a college
student in Minnesota, America. The brother borrowed some money and managed to send his sisters two flight
tickets, which would allow them to fly to America to stay with him. The two poor girls boarded the plane to
America. On the plane, next to the girls sat two ladies, who appeared to be in their late 30s. One wore a black
pigtail. The other had mid-length fair hair. Both women carried tennis rackets (球拍). They talked about
playing tennis in Paris.
When it was time for lunch, the stewardess (空姐) handed out food to the passengers. But the two girls
got none, because their flight tickets didn’t include lunch. Despite the fact that they were hungry, they couldn’t
afford any food. The two ladies noticed it and started conversation with them. Zugay couldn’t speak English at
the time, but Vanja was able to carry on more of a conversation. The two ladies learnt about the girls’ situation
and offered to buy lunch for them. Zugay and Vanja were moved to tears. Although Zugay couldn’t speak
English, she had a good time with the ladies. She even helped the women with knitting (编织).
Time passed quickly. The flight landed at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Before leaving,
one of the ladies handed them an envelope and made them promise not to open it until they got off the plane.
The girls were later shocked to discover a $100 bill inside. A note on the outside of the envelope read: A

Little Tom lived with his poor grandmother Donna in a village. Every day, Tom sold potatoes grown by
Donna in a market.
One day, an old foreigner aroused Tom’s curiosity. He frequently visited Tom’s stall (摊位) but didn’t
buy. The next day, the man passed from one vendor (小贩) to the next, waving a bag around. But he didn’t
visit Tom’s stall that day. Out of curiosity, Tom asked a vendor nearby to temporarily look after his stall. Then,
he followed the foreigner.
The man went back to his broken-down house near the market and took several old medals from his bag.
“Wow!” Tom said. “I won them in my own country,” the man said proudly, then asking why Tom came here.
Tom explained, “I’m wondering why you didn’t visit my stall today.” “Oh, I don’t need potatoes. I need
firewood, so I walked around the market looking for someone who would buy these medals and give me
money in exchange,” he lied.
Tom left and brought back many potatoes from his stall, saying, “If you don’t have money, you can’t buyfood. Keep my grandma’s potatoes.” But the man insisted he had enough food. Tom went back, upset; he
could see the man was hungry and weak.
The third day, the man reached the market, selling medals again. He valued them, which were his honors.
But after a disaster, now he had to sell them to survive. He looked weaker. Tom packed some potatoes,
walking towards him again. From his conversations with vendors, Tom found him trying to sell medals for
food! But no one believed his medals were true.
Disappointed, the man sat alone by the roadside. Tom approached him, saying, “I saw it! Why didn’t you
let me help you?” Almost crying, he said, “I’m sorry, but I was too embarrassed to ask for your help. Now

Smith almost messed up a “big time”. He was driving his car and coming back from the dentist with his
5-year-old Justus when they saw a homeless man in the street. Smith said on Facebook that he wanted to give
the man some money, but didn’t have any cash. His son Justus noticed the man as well. And then it happened.
Unexpectedly, Justus insisted that his father give the man the 30 cents he had in his pocket. Smith said,
“It’s almost as if he heard my thoughts and responded out loud.”
“I was more than happy he wanted to do this with joy, but honestly I was hesitant. I didn’t want to give
this man who clearly needed all the help he could get, just 30 cents. My own pride and thoughts of the
homeless individual’s unknown reaction to receiving just 30 cents was standing in the way,” said Smith. “I
quickly realized that I was the only problem in this situation and that the traffic light would turn green at any
second.”
Smith recalled that he almost told his son to wait to give until they at least had one dollar. He almost toldhis son that what he had wasn’t enough. He almost showed him that what he saw as a good thing wasn’t good
enough to make a difference in someone’s life. He almost taught Justus that pride was more important than
helping another human.
However, the father told himself to get over the strange thought. He remembered that was what he has
been teaching Justus. And now that Justus wanted to give everything he had to offer at that moment, he
shouldn’t let his selfishness ruin a great memory and a good teaching moment. Smith said, “Leading by
example is what I have been teaching him, so now let him give what he can to this man.”

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he
earned, he couldn’t support his family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at
the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but
to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.
To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid-19 swept the world
when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making
money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was
his car, and his car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking
for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of
belonging.
At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn’t
supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of
self-respect and didn’t want to turn to charity.
When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used
to be in his class many years ago. She could still remember how Jose encouraged her to finish her education
when she was struggling with her learning. She noticed Jose spent a considerable amount of time in his car,

I was a volunteer for an organization at the beginning of this year. The organization is aimed at helping
children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme
funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organization, I went to the event with her. There were
many people at the event. After seeing our poster, some people came to us and talked with us. But few people
donated money. It was a bit hot that day. Both Lisa and I got really upset.
Half an hour later, Lisa started complaining, “I don’t think we can raise much money today.”
“Don’t worry. The event lasts for three hours. There is still a lot of time left,” I said, though I also thought
poorly of our plan to raise much money that day.
While Lisa and I were talking, a little boy of about eight years old came to us. He stood in front of our
poster and started reading.
After a while, he asked, “What is cancer?”
I explained what cancer is. Then I said, “Many people around the world are suffering from cancer. It can
be really dangerous. More research is needed to learn about it so that people with it can suffer less. That’s why
we’re collecting money for it.”
“Do children suffer from cancer, too?” asked the boy.
“Yes. Many children suffer from cancer. Some of them may die. They need help,” Lisa said and I nodded.
Hearing that, the boy became sad. Then the boy asked, “How much money have you collected?”
Both Lisa and I were embarrassed to tell him that we didn’t raise much money. At last, we said, “Not
much.”
The boy looked into our donation container and only saw a few one-dollar and five-dollar bills. The boy
said nothing after seeing that and left. Then some girls came to us and we started talking with them. Neither
Lisa nor I thought the boy would return. However, about twenty minutes later, the boy did return.

everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to
separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the
building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn’t until a couple of hours later that we opened the
doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I’d come face to face with the homeless: How
should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of
the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous, I didn’t have too much time to worry
about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I
needed help, she’d be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them
wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed
to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all
needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who
didn’t have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.

I was sitting at my desk surrounded by New Year gifts, feeling happy that I had managed to buy some
hard — to — find items. These were for Kids Need More, a charitable organization offering services to
socially disadvantaged children. One of its most popular events is the Holiday Cheer Bus. The organization
always fills the buses with donated gifts for the families on the Cheer Bus routes. Each bus is manned by a
team of volunteers. My family had been volunteers for years. I had a list of the families on our route.
Just as I was packing up the items with my husband and my son, I received a call from the director of the
organization. She asked if I could add a family to my route— here was a young mother, Leanne, and her son.
I called Leanne and told her that a Holiday Cheer Bus would be visiting her family. Leanne seemed really
excited and began to cry. I comforted her, “The Holiday Cheer Bus is really going to come. Is there something
special that your child would like?”
“My son is three. All he wants is a pair of Spider-Man snow boots so that he can play outside in the snow.
”
I asked about her son's shoe size. She told me the size and I promised I would have Spider-Man snow
boots in size 9 for her son.
After I said goodbye and ended the call, panic set in. It was two days before the Holiday Cheer Bus was
going on its run, less than a week before New Year. I was going to need a holiday miracle to find Spider-Man
snow boots in size 9.
“We have to go shopping!" I called out to my husband and son. They were surprised but still we set off.
We went to a few department stores and the shoe departments, without success. We were tired and hungry. We
were becoming disheartened. My son suggested giving Leanne a gift card so she could get the boots herself.
But I didn't want to give up. I promised we would bring boots.

The young boy saw me, or rather, he saw the car and quickly ran up to me, eager to sell his bunches of
bananas and bags of peanuts. Though he appeared to be about twelve, he seemed to have already known the
bitterness of life.“Banana 300 naira. Peanuts 200 naira.”He said in a low voice. I bargained (与……讨价还价)
him down to 200 total for the fruit and nuts. When he agreed, I handed him a 500 naira bill. He didn't have
change. So I told him not to worry. He said thanks and smiled a row of perfect teeth.
When, two weeks later, I saw the boy again, I was more aware of my position in a society where it's not
that uncommon to see a little boy who should be in school standing on the corner selling fruit in the burning
sun. My parents had raised me to be aware of the advantage we had been afforded and the responsibility it
brought to us.
I pulled over and rolled down my window. He had a bunch of bananas and a bag of peanuts ready. I
waved them away.“ What's up?”I asked him.“I ... I don't have money to buy books for school.”1 reached into
my pocket and handed him two fresh 500 naira bills.“Will this help?”I asked. He looked around nervously
before taking the money. One thousand naira was a lot of money to someone whose family probably made
about 5 ,000 naira or less each year. “Thank you, sir. ”he said.“Thank you very much!”
When driving home, I wondered if my little friend actually used the money for schoolbooks. What if he's
a cheat? And then I wondered why I did it. Did I do it to make myself feel better? Was I using him? Later, I
realized that I didn't know his name or the least bit about him, nor did I think to ask.

I am a proud mother of three children. My last little baby was born in the middle of August and her name
is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s
mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had a loom (织布机) and showed me how to knit (编织) a
scarf. After I learned some skills, she gave me a small loom with her half done project.
I was looking after my sweet little baby at home, so I had some extra time to do something with my
hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I bought a full loom set and tons of thread (线) and
started to make woolen hats since it was winter.
I realized the homeless population in my town. really needed some more warm clothes. I started to give
away my hats to the people asking for food outside the food shop down the street I live in.
My oldest son Siddhartha got involved in the project and made a hat as well. I found that there was a non-
profit organization on the way home, which made masks for farm workers and was asking for winter warm
clothing donations. I made a lot of woolen hats and gave them to the organization which would hand them out
to farm workers.
Then I, together with my son, made woolen hats for everyone in my family as Christmas gifts, and gave
woolen hats to all my neighbors I was close to. There was a new family that moved in down the street. I did
not know them very well but why not break the ice with some handmade gifts? So I made hats for the mom
and one-year-old baby. I knocked on the door and handed the gifts over and my neighbor was so happy to
receive them. We talked happily and I learned she worked in a hospital.

I have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology. The teacher was
absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with.
Her last project of the term was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people
and document their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway,
so I thought this would be a piece of cake literally.
Soon after we were assigned the project, my classmates and I went out to a popular restaurant on a
freezing March morning. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone
around us began to back away, and then even my classmates did. I did not move an inch. An overwhelming
feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around, I smelled a
horrible “dirty body” smell, and standing there behind me were two poor homeless men.
As I looked down at the shorter gentleman, close to me, he was smiling. His beautiful sky-blue eyes were
full of light as he searched for acceptance. He said “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been
catching.
The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend. I realized the second man was
mentally deficient. I held my tears as I stood there with them.
The young lady behind the counter asked the shorter gentleman what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all,
Miss.” That was all they could afford to be able to sit in the restaurant and warm up. They had to buy
something. They just wanted to be warm. Then I really felt it, a compulsion so great that I almost reached out
and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That was when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on
me, judging my reaction. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast
meals.

Claudia’s mom first saw the advertisement in a newspaper. The advertisement told of an AmeriCorps-
sponsored workshop to train 100 teenagers in leadership skills and community service. Claudia sent in her
application and was one of the teenagers chosen to go to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, in the summer when she
was 16.
During the leadership training, Claudia worked with a team of 10 kids. Together they surveyed, planned,
and set up a meeting for minority business owners to find out how crime and safety affected them. After
surveying more than 150 people, Claudia and her friends provided information to businesses about alarm
systems and other safety measures.
At the end of her AmeriCorps training, Claudia was one of only two teens chosen to attend a Sumner of
Safety National Forum. She received more training there and returned home with enthusiasm.
That’s when her mom told her about a problem at the day-care center where she worked. All day long,
kids from a nearby housing project would press their noses against the windows of the center, knocking and
begging to use the playground. But the playground was always locked, and only children whose parents paid
for day care were allowed to use it.
“That’s when it hit me,” Claudia remembers. “I had really developed my leadership skills and a desire to
serve by helping those small businesses. So I went to a teacher at Framingham High School and made a
proposal for an after-school program for those children living in the low-income housing project.” Claudia
received lots of support from about 20 other teens in a service club at the high school.
The project wasn’t easy. First, Claudia struggled to find a place to house the program. The Framingham
Housing Authority finally agreed to donate a facility next door to the day-care center. Claudia immediately
organized her friends to collect donations of crayons, paper, scissors, and supplies from teachers and day-care
centers. Then she made a flyer (传单) and distributed it around the housing project.

When he was 18, Omar Brooks left home in Canonsburg to join the army. His training took him to Fort
Stewart in Georgia, where every morning after getting up at 6:30, the soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division
sang “Dogface Soldier”—a World War II song. “I’m just a dogface soldier, with a rifle (步枪) on my shoulder,
and I eat raw meat for breakfast every day…”
The 3rd Division was among the first wave of ground forces to attack Iraq from Kuwait, and Brooks was
the first from his army to drive across the border in a vehicle armed with eight missiles and a 50-caliber
machine gun. He survived, but he lost friends and struggled with post-traumatic (创伤后的) stress disorder
after leaving the service in 2003.
He struggled for 15 years to fill the hole in his soul left by his military service. Then, two years ago, this
dogface soldier started working with Bridge to Home Animal Rescue in Eighty Four, Washington County.
Fostering (代养) dogs and finding them homes have helped Brooks, now 40 and a state corrections officer, to
remove the suffering of daily life.
“Without sounding like a man with a soft heart, there is something to be said about puppy kisses and
seeing unconditional love in a time where people need to see more unconditional love,” he said.
Brooks, his wife, Nicole Malesic, and daughters Zaida, 5, and Waverly, 2, have fostered 16 dogs over the
past two years. They play with dogs together. They walk and bath them. They frequently make videos and do
photo shoots of the animals to encourage adopters (收养者) on social media. “People are looking to enrichtheir homes,” he said. “People are getting dogs or cats or different companions (陪伴) for their homes because
we are dealing with a difficult time.”

It was four weeks before New Year, and our youth group wanted to do something together as a New Year
project for our community. The concept was great, but none of us seventeen-year-olds had any idea what to
do.
“Maybe we could have a food drive to help the homeless,” John suggested at our Sunday night meeting.
“But we have done that many times, answered Brian with a frown.
Ten minutes passed without any proposal good enough to win our hearts. Finally I decided to speak.
“Why don’t we think about our project for a few days and then come back with three or four suggestions we
can vote on?” Everyone agreed to wait a week before deciding.
I knew time was running out to get something going before New Year, but I had no clue what we should
do. During the following week, one idea after another ran through my mind, but I was still indecisive.
Thursday after school, I wandered into the kitchen as my dad prepared for dinner. Sensing my uneasiness,
he asked what troubled me without even looking up. “Well... it...” I let out a long breath. “Our youth group
wants to do something for New Year, but we don’t know what to do...”
“Hmm.” My dad thought out loud. “There’s a seniors’ home I’ve worked with close to St. Joseph’s
Hospital. The residents don’t get out much around New Year with the snow and ice. It might be an idea to take
them out to see the New Year lights around here.”
I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular(绚丽的)New Year light displays in our

Kelsey Golden works in media marketing for a school and usually takes her 5-year-old son, Barrett,
around the neighborhood. All too often, they offer help to people in need and the boy becomes increasingly
caring and sympathetic, especially to the homeless.
On a rainy Monday morning, Golden was working on the school’s annual yearbook on her computer at
home. She was transferring photos from her phone to her computer when Barrett started browsing(浏览)her
phone.
The boy loves the camera feature on her phone. He likes to look at his reflection, instead of playing
games or engaging in other activities on her phone. But this time, Barrett didn’t just stare at his reflection. He
started pressing the screen, swinging it around like his arm is a roller coaster.
He even mentioned seeing his favorite chain restaurant’s mascots (吉祥物)online, which was really
unexpected.
Then, Golden received a message that her take-away food order was taking longer than usual-which was
unusual, because although she sometimes ordered the food for her two older children’s lunches at school, that
morning she had packed their lunches. The teacher furthered the confusion when she told Golden that her
children were indeed eating their packed lunches at school-no take-away food in sight.
Golden’s confusion was deepened when she was playing with Barrett at the gate. But in that moment, a
car pulled in. Golden felt more confused-the delivery driver got out a huge chain restaurant’s bag which had
31 cheeseburgers!
At first, Golden thought the delivery driver was at the wrong house. Then it occurred to her that Barrett
had played her phone that morning, leaving her phone unlocked, so she went back and looked at the phone,
only to find an order was placed at that time that he was playing with it. “That’s crazy! He really did this. ”注意:

Anna Morrison was a single mother raising three little children, Joseph, Catherine, and Tom alone after
her husband passed away. And Anna didn’t have much money as a cleaner.
Before Tom’s 6th birthday, Anna saved some money. She knew it wasn’t much, but she could at least
treat her children to one proper meal on the special day. So on Tom’s birthday, Anna took her children to a
local café. After reading the menu, she realized she could only afford one dish. The waitress had already
brought them water and was waiting for their order, and Anna was too shy to leave. So she decided to buy
something within her budget.
Finally, she settled on a plate of noodles and meatballs. When the dinner arrived, Tom cried, “Mom, one
dish isn’t enough for the four of us. And I want a drink with my food,”“Yes, Mommy!” Catherine and
Joseph cried together.
“I’m sorry,” Anna apologized. “For the time being, let’s have this. I promise to do better on your next
birthday.” She then divided the foods among her children. As the kids finished their food, Catherine said,
“Mommy, I’m still hungry. Can we get something else?” Tom added, “How about a cake? We can’t celebrate a
birthday without a cake! Please, Mom! I’ll wash my hands and be right back! Then we can order it!” With
that, Tom rushed to the washroom; Catherine and Joseph followed.
As the children left, Anna murmured in tears, “How do I tell them I don’t have any money on me?”

I was born in a small village in the mountainous province of Lao Cai in Vietnam. In my poverty-stricken
small village, girls hardly had the chance to complete their education. But I was lucky. I was born into a
family where my parents supported our education. As one of the very few families that could afford all
children to continue to study till high school, my parents faced a lot of negative opinions from our neighbors.
I was not always there for the criticism, however, as I lived in boarding schools for ethnic minority (少数
民族) children. There were a lot of girls and boys from different ethnic groups in our schools. In these second
homes, I learned from teachers and friends and most importantly, I was trained to live independently and with
confidence. And this gave me the motivation to try harder every day.
In 2017, I came to Hanoi, the capital city, as a first-year student at the University of Languages and
International Studies. It was a life-changing experience for me. I was thrilled at the fact that the students here
were so bright and brilliant. The world became much bigger for me — far different from my small town.
“Where are you from? Are you an ethnic minority?” Those were the frequent questions I had from my
classmates at the beginning. At first, I was afraid of those questions and then I realized that when I began to
talk openly about my culture, I was warmly received.
It goes without saying that confidence grows in a nurturing (滋养的) environment. Again, I found myself
lucky. Slowly I started to engage in school activities and after some time, I volunteered for community
activities.

When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily
took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright
orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What’s that old lady doing?” I asked Emily, pointing out of
the window to the street in front of the house.
Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She’s picking up rubbish around here for fun.” “Oh,” I answered.
“Interesting... Why would someone think picking up rubbish is fun?” For a long time, I often saw that old lady
—rain or shine—on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However,
I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.
Later, when I moved to college, I’d see rubbish in the grass and feel really angry about it. I’d think, “Why
isn’t anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do
I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty?” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚
的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better
shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help me out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful.
Seeing that, I began to think, “If I can pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may
make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be
embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first few miles of a 10-mile race through
some hills. Birds were singing on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested and springy.
Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was running easily, too, moving along
efficiently. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother concentrating on pace
when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for me? I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles, wandered west for a mile, and then
turned south again. The race was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be real hard
work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy, for they exchanged a few words.
Their brief communication worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really good, and
Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed
was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t give up hope completely. We were
approaching a hill, a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost certainly
determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Blake was moving
away, first five yards, then ten, then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

I need to do something in my community (社区) in order to complete the community service hours
required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I
did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing our dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing
everything from preparing to serving the dinner.

I was a volunteer for an organisation at the beginning of this year. The organisation is aimed at helping
children who suffer from cancer. One day, we were asked to raise money for cancer research and programme
funding at an event.
Since my friend Lisa was also a volunteer for the organisation, I went to the event with her. There were
many people at the event.

I stood still for a few moments thinking of all the spectacular(绚丽的)New Year light displays in our
neighborhood. To be honest, I never thought about that, but it might just work.

“People are looking to enrich
their homes,” he said. “People are getting dogs or cats or different companions (陪伴) for their homes because
we are dealing with a difficult time.”

Brooks recalled, “No job could fill the void (空虚) from leaving the service, but I could al-ways circle
back to charity. ”
