The chain of kindness
The rain was coming down so hard that each drop seemed to explode as it hit the roof of the car. Tom looked
out into the coal-black night, struggling desperately to keep his car on the road. The rain beatdown continuously
and the road was deserted except for Tom and his car.
Tom could see his wheelchair in the backseat from the rear-view mirror and quickly looked down at his thin,
broken legs. He could feel a familiar wave of despair start to wash over him. Suddenly, a loud noise shook him out
of his moment of hopelessness as the car began to bump down the road. “Great,” he thought, “a flat tyre.”
With a heavy sigh, Tom brought the car to a stop, resting his head on the steering wheel, defeated! After a few
seconds, he looked up and peered out of the window. In the distance, he could see a light twinkling in the
blackness.
When Tom approached the house, a young girl around ten years old was standing in the doorway. He pulled up
and rolled down the window. “Are your parents at home?” he shouted over the wind and rain. “I have a flat tyre and
I need help.”
“Wait a minute,” the girl replied and went into the house. A few minutes later, she returned with an old man.
The girl held his arm and smiled lovingly up at him.
Tom explained the problem to the old man and added, “I need help because my legs are paralyzed.” The words
came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that he needed help from this weak old man
in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply nodded.
The old man and the little girl concentrated on their work and the rain was soaking them. Once again, Tom
couldn’t help but feel he was useless. Soon the old man stepped to the window. “You’re all set,” he said. Tom
handed some money to the old man, but he made no move to take it. Finally, the young girls aid, “Grandfather is
blind.”

Mark grabbed his keys. He needed to get out of the house quickly. He had been trying to save as much money
as possible from the government assistance he received due to his disability, but it was harder and harder with
prices rising daily.
Unfortunately, he lost half his right arm in a car accident several years ago, and it was hard to find a new job in
his town in Tampa, Florida. He lost his previous job recently when the company went bankrupt (破产). For now, he
only had those government checks keeping him fed, but he was tapping into his savings for everything else, and
they were running out fast.
One of his friends had gotten him an interview and he was on his way. But after closing and locking his door,
Mark turned around and got the shock of his life. A pregnant (怀孕的) woman was lying on his lawn, and/he had no
idea how long she had been there.
He grabbed his phone and called 911 quickly, and suddenly, it started to rain. Finally, it came, and he
explained to the doctors that he had to move her because of the rain.
“Don’t worry, sir. She’s cold, so it was good that you moved her. Do you know this woman?” asked the doctor.
Mark shook his head.
“Can I give you my phone number? If you don’t find her family or anyone, can you call me? My name is
Mark Higgins.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” the doctor said, noting down his number and leaving with the woman.
Mark closed his door and sat down on his couch, hoping his heart would stop beating so fast. Suddenly, he
remembered his interview and looked at the clock. He was late for it. He dashed to his car, praying they would wait

The Greatest Thanksgiving
“Are you going grocery shopping today?” my husband, Roy asked when I picked up the telephone.
“I plan to,” I answered.
Thanksgiving was only a couple days away. Everyone in our family would be coming to our house. My funds
were limited, therefore my box of coupons (优惠券) awaited me in the car. I knew I had to be creative in my
shopping that day. I had to stretch every dollar.
For a few seconds, Roy sat silently on the other end of the line. “Why do you ask?” I uttered, fearing what he
might say.
“Nancy, there’s a family with a half dozen kids that will not have anything to eat for Thanksgiving. The little
one is only five years old. While you’re at the store, could you possibly buy something for them?” Roy’s words
echoed in my heart. My head began to spin (眩晕)thinking about the fifty dollars I had reserved for our family’ s
Thanks giving dinner.
In the back of my mind I counted the hungry guests who would be coming to our house for dinner. I put my
head down on my desk, already feeling defeated.
There’s no way possible, I thought. But the sympathy I heard in my husband’s voice struck a nerve inside me.
“Sure.” I replied.
I finished my work and prayed all the way to the nearest grocery store.
The turkeys were indeed on sale—29 cents a pound, but I discovered one big problem. When I read the sign
posted on the freezer door, my heart sank. “Limit one.”
“But I need two,” I uttered to myself, I decided to find the manager. I explained the problem. He made an
exception. After tossing two turkeys in the cart, I began my shopping. It was amazing how many buy-one-get-one-free
items were being featured that day. In addition, I had all the right coupons to get exactly what both families needed
for a hearty Thanks giving dinner. I held my breath while the cashier rang up my groceries.
To my surprise, I had enough money. I was even able to purchase a package of cookies for the five-year-old
who had stolen my heart, even though I had never met her.

Mary’s husband died a few years ago from an accident. To make ends meet, she had to take on several jobs
and bring up her five children alone. Fortunately, her oldest children understood her and helped to look after the
younger kids. Mary always felt terrible about that, but there was nothing she could do. She dreamed of having a van
to transport goods for others so that she could have another source of income.
In the mornings, Mary cleaned the houses for some families, and worked as a cashier at a supermarket the rest
of the afternoon. At night, she worked at a gas station’s convenience store. Every night, she came home tired, and
most of the kids had been asleep by then.
One afternoon, Mary was walking to the supermarket to start her duty when she saw an old man staring at the
window of the bakery next door. The smell of fresh-baked bread permeated (弥漫) the air. However, the man
merely sighed and started walking away.
Mary felt awful for some unknown reason and stopped the man. “Hey, sir. I think I’ve seen you before at the
store, ”she said. “Yes. I’m Hector. Nice to see you,” the old man nodded at her and started to walk away.
“Wait, do you need anything?” Mary said, smiling kindly.
“Honestly, there was a leak in my roof this month, and I had to spend my entire month’s pension (退休金) on

That year I was ten years old and my father was away, leaving my mother and me behind. My mother was a
surgeon and worked at the local clinic a few blocks from where we lived. It was a noisy and cold winter, when 1
learned a valuable 1esson.
The bell rang and thoughts of Christmas were the only thing on my mind. I raced home from school. The
apartment was empty when I arrived and a note was attached to the refrigerator. My mother was working a double
shin and left me instructions for the day. I became angry and tore the note in several pieces. We had planned on
making Christmas biscuits together, but my mother spoiled it by working.
I suddenly realized my mother must have hidden the Christmas presents somewhere in her bedroom. I hunted
through mother’s closet, finding the gifts for Christmas wrapped but one, a model plane. At the thought of my
loneliness on such a night I couldn’t help but throw it onto the floor, its wings broken. I stood frozen with my eyes
and mouth wide open, staring down at the plane...
Then my mother came through the door and saw the plane.
“Danny?”
“Yeah, Mom?”
“I came home to take the toy plane to one of my patients, but...” she said, her eyes moving from the floor to
me. I stood sill, unable to come up with a good explanation for the toy’s ruin. The silence was terrible. I did not
hear my mother scold me. She just leaned against the wall with her tired body. A feeling of guilt floating into my
mind, I gathered my courage to tell her the horrible truth. She hugged me and asked me to put my coat on and
follow her.

Another term had started and I had to attend the first lecture of the new course. The lecturer told us to make
groups of two students for a project. I looked to the right and there was my classmate Jack sitting there. And I
decided myself that he would be my group member. On the left side, there was an older woman who was from an
open university. We talked about the project and decided to make a group of three. During the break, she told me
that, last year, she didn’t manage to pass the course, so she would try again.
Later we got an email from our lecturer saying it was not allowed to make groups of three students. The old
lady then tried to find some groups, but failed. I knew she wouldn’t find other groups, so I told her that we could do
the project together. I had to say good bye to Jack.
After many meetings, we finished the project. In the last meeting, I told her I had difficulty in finding a
summer job. I was living in a small town and there weren’t many jobs available and neither had I any previous
experience. She advised me to keep doing it, as one would finally answer someday. She then thanked me for
helping her and before leaving she said “see you”.
Two weeks later, I got an email from a company saying they had received my job application and decided to
call me for a job interview. I appeared for the interview and answered the questions interviewers raised. In the end,
they asked me where I had learned about the open job position. In fact, I had no idea so I told them I didn’t
remember well. They called me three days later and told me I could start in May. That would be the first time I
would be working as a software engineer and I couldn’t describe what I felt like.

Zero-waste is the latest trend among eco-friendly and sustainable-living circles. Concerned individuals are
taking a hard look at our wasteful habits, and finding creative and innovative ways to deal with the issue. Among
them is a restaurant owner in India.
Minu Pauline owns a restaurant in Kochi, southern India. The 28-year-old restaurant owner was upset that her
restaurant was throwing away a lot of food each day while many within the community were going hungry. Then
she came up with an idea after watching a woman digging through the restaurant’s rubbish bags for food late one
night.
“Just imagine being in the situation where you should be asleep but you feel too hungry and have to go out to
find food,” she said. “It was very sad.” The experience was an eye-opener for Pauline. She realized just how much
food we waste in society——including her own business, while so many people are going hungry. In response, she
decided to place a refrigerator in front of her restaurant.
Once the refrigerator was in place, she encouraged customers to put whatever food they didn’t finish within.
Pauline herself also put food in it. In addition, she wrote the date when the food was left in the refrigerator, so those
who took it knew how long it had been there. The refrigerator was left unlocked 24 hour a day, and the food was
available to anyone for free. Now the refrigerator feeds dozens of homeless people each day.

On a beautiful Thursday this April, Amy and Alan Green took their daughter Abbey out for a walk in the
neighborhood. On their way back, Amy picked up a kite for Abbey from the Dollar Tree, blue with rainbows—there
are a lot of rainbows decorating homes around the region these days, which helps make life less dull during the
coronavirus pandemic.
In the afternoon, Abbey took the kite out for its first flight. At first, the wind was perfect. It took the kite high
in the sky. However, suddenly, the wind became much stronger and pulled the kite out of Abbey’s hands in a
moment. It flew farther and farther and finally got stuck on the power lines next to a big tree, wrapping itself over
and over again around the wires. Since the kite was too high for them to reach, the Greens could do nothing about
it. Worried less about the kite than the danger it might present to the lines, Amy called National Grid (国家电网) to
report the incident.
About one hour later, Mike, a worker from the power company arrived. He carefully removed the kite line
from the wires. After about 10 minutes’ effort, he successfully freed it. But unfortunately, as the kite was wrapped
so tightly, there was some unpreventable damage. Still, he gave it back to Alan Green. As he was leaving, he
noticed Abbey taking the kite to the backyard. Out of curiosity, he stood there for a while to see how the girl would
deal with it. Surprisingly, she dug a hole and buried the kite in a shoebox. Even though he could not see the girl’s
face clearly, he knew exactly how sad Abbey was. He really felt bad for her. And it was at that moment that he
decided to do something.

The weather was extremely hot as the midday sun shone with all its might. 23-year-old Richard had just gotten
down from a truck he hitchhiked(搭便车)and could barely stand on the hot road. His feet were getting baked in his
smelly sneakers. He panted heavily, looking around for a drink. But as far as his sunken eyes could see, there was
not a drop of water.
Since Richard’s band in Los Angeles broke up several weeks ago, he had to come to reunite with his parents.
Just as he finished a two-mile hike on the deserted highway, he stopped on the roadside. Suddenly, he noticed a
little bike lying there.
When he approached near, he saw a water bottle and a small helmet lying nearby. He leaned closer and noticed
fresh little muddy footsteps disappearing into the woods. Richard’s brows shot up in terror as he hurried toward the
entrance of the dense forest. It seemed very unusual for a little kid to be all alone there.
Imagine a little kid out there alone! Richard’s instincts(直觉)told him something was wrong, so he cupped his
hands around his mouth and called out to the child. Suddenly, he heard a faint cry from the heart of the woods. It
was a little girl’s cry for help.
“Don’t give up! I’m coming!” Richard ran quickly after noticing a little girl and her dog holding onto a log(原
木)and floating on the river.
The current was washing away almost everything on its course, and the girl was lucky that the log was stuck
onto something under the surface. But that would not hold on for long as the current grew faster and stronger.
Richard wanted to pull the two out to the shore before they were washed toward the edge of the waterfall,
which was just meters away. However, he couldn’t think of anything immediately. Just then, his mind acted fast,
and he ran back to get something.
“Hold on…I’ll be right back,” he assured her.

I’m not going to say storms are good, because I know what they’ve stolen from people. But my story is of a
storm that gave me more than I’d thought to ask for.
The tornado(龙卷风)blew through on a Sunday. We were visiting grandparents in Raleigh then, unaware that
seventy miles away the big tree in our front yard was tearing through our roof and destroying the kitchen.
When we returned, we saw Rosica’s father and brothers in our yard, gathering debris(碎片)and using a chain
saw to cut the thickest branches of the fallen tree, though we barely knew them then. They were covered in sweat
and dirt.
My mom didn’t seem to notice how happy they were to help us because the first thing she said was “Oh, you
don’t need to be doing all that work!” Mr. Flores laughed.“Claro! Of course, we don’t. But more importantly, you
cannot sleep in that house tonight. Come and speak to my wife. She’ll help you figure out what to do.” My mom
doesn’t usually let people tell her what to do, but she sighed(叹气)deeply as she took in the sight of our home in the
failing light, reached for my hand, and followed our neighbor to their house.
The Flores family lived across the street. Their home was the same size as ours but housed three generations.
Rosica was my age. I knew her name and face, but since she was new to our school, and had a different teacher
than I did, we had never spoken. It was she who answered the door.“Mama is changing the sheets on the bed for
you, and there’s some lemon cheesecake on the table.”
“Please don’t trouble yourself. I think I’d call a hotel and see about a room,” my mom said, more uneasy than
usual. Mrs. Flores came down the stairs and smiled at us warmly, “Y our room is ready. I know it’s more
encouraged to give than receive, but allow yourself to receive a place to stay, and allow us the chance to give you
something you need!”
