But going home wasn’t an option. My adviser had required me and the rest of my lab mates to stay in the lab until she had time to read all of our reports. She had decided she wanted to meet early with each of us to discuss the single-paragraph descriptions of our work. We waited dutifully as each lab member took their turn. None of us dared to leave or to challenge our boss. I didn’t get home until 1:30 a.m. It was one more reminder that I should have been more careful when selecting a graduate adviser. Unfortunately, I was foolish enough not to give the directing style a second thought. I was simply happy to have received an offer. Part of the problem was that I had limited options. I moved to the United States with my husband, who had a good job in a particular city. It had only one university, with only one department that really interested me. So I started to volunteer in a research lab there. I was a regular attendee at departmental discussion groups, and that was where I met my future adviser. After she presented a meeting, I approached her and we set up a time to chat. We had a productive discussion about her research. Later, I went to dinner with her lab group. I didn’t pick up any signs of trouble, although one person who worked in a lab that shared space with hers did tell me about coming across one of her lab members crying in the break room. I ignored that warning sign. Within a few weeks, the staff member offered me a position in her lab as a master’s student. The opportunity seemed too good to pass up. I hoped it would work out. It wasn’t long before reality set in. Group meetings were terrible. Our adviser was often angry. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 The situation disappointed me. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ A year later, I finally had the opportunity to change my adviser with a different lab. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________ 2.(2023·全国·高三专题练习) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容进行续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Mr Tai, the teacher in charge of athletics at the school of SUKK Temarah, had just celebrated his 58th birthday — an age at which many would think seriously of retiring. However, it was not so with Mr Tai. He had an outstanding record of athletic achievements in leading the school’s sports team. Some of the students he had coached had become national runners or even coaches themselves. The school board agreed he continued to work as they did not want to lose the services of someone who had successfully led the school athletics team to the finals of the National Athletics Championships. In the year before, however, the school team did not get as many medals in the National Athletics Championships as expected. Mr Tai’s hopes were fired this year by two promising star athletics, Farid and Hassan, who happened to be twins. In the school’s sports meet, Farid broke the school’s twenty-year record for the 100 meters event. His brother, Hassan, was second to him. Since Hassan had an ankle injury, Mr Tai decided to submit only Farid’s name to the finals of the National Athletics Championships and told Farid to get ready for the event. On the day he submitted the results of the best runner in the school, he mistakenly wrote Hassan’s name instead. When Mr Tai received the list of the finalists in the 100 meters event in the National Athletics Championships, he realized his mistake. However, it was too late to inform the sports secretariat (秘书处). Besides, pride also did not allow him to tell Farid the mistake. He decided to inform his brother, Hassan, and start training him in the final preparations. When Farid learned that he was not a finalist, he could not believe his ears. Even though he was glad that his brother was qualified for the event, he was quite disappointed. To make matters worse, Mr Tai did not give him any reasons for his not being allowed to take part in the finals. Realizing that his hopes for athletic glory were destroyed, Farid felt extremely sad. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: Seeing Farid’s unhappiness, his best friend, John, pulled him aside to have a talk. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Hassan did not do well in the National Athletics Championships. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 3.(2023·山东潍坊·统考三模) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 James loved his mother very much. There were only three people in his house. A father, a mother and a James himself. As time goes on, one day James’s mother’s health took a turn for the worse. His mother went to the hospital, but she was unable to come home alive. This broke James a lot from inside and he even stopped eating for several days. Seeing such condition of James, his father left him to live with his sister and himself went back to his village. James wanted to know why his mother died. Time goes on. Now James was about 15 years old. Right now he was studying class 10th. Since James was studying from the village, he does not have much knowledge yet. But one day he learned that doctors can help. They can heal any sick person. Now this thing settled in James’s mind. Now he wanted to study and became a doctor. He told this to his sister and his father. James’s father was overjoyed to listen that his son wanted to become a doctor, but at the same time he started thinking that it would take a lot of money to study a doctor. “Where will all this money come from?” James told his father the solution to the problem. He said, “Father! If I have studied 10 and 12 well, then I can study in a good government college for free, but for this I have to leave my village and go to some city and study.” Hearing this, James’ father said, “Son! For this I will mortgage (抵押) all my land”. And it happened. James’ father mortgaged all his land. Then he sent James to the city. James came to town for the first time. Here he saw a variety of things and styles. Seeing this, he deviated (偏离) from his main goal. Now he did not feel like studying. Then he befriended a girl. He considered that girl as his life. This was how time passed. One day James’ father made a call. James’ father asked, “Son, how are you? How is your study going?” On this he said, “It is going very well.” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 However, his class 10 result came, in which he had fallen.____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ James used to study for 15 hours a day. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________ 4.(2023·全国·高三专题练习) 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。 During my sixth-grade year, I was nervous about many things. I was afraid of being a role model on campus. I was afraid of going to a middle school the following year. But nothing compared to my biggest fear of all… puberty (青春期). I was getting to the age where my voice would start changing. At first, I was excited for my voice to get deeper. But then I learned that before your voice gets deeper, it can sometimes crack(嘶哑). The first time it happened to me I was so embarrassed, but to my surprise, my friends didn’t make fun of me. In fact, they didn’t even mention it. That was reality. But in my self- conscious sixth-grade mind I was certain they were going to spend all day making fun of me behind my back. They were not having the same problem controlling their voices. After my first voice crack experience, I was determined to make sure it wouldn’t happen again. At least not in public. So, I began clearing my throat before I spoke. Limiting how much I spoke and clearing my voice before I spoke made my break and lunch experiences much less stressful. This was great but there was a larger problem. I was more scared about having a voice crack during class. There were reasons why having a voice crack in class was scarier. One of these reasons was that our class had a group of popular girls. Having a voice crack in front of them was a fear. Unfortunately, one day my worst frightening dream came true. It was about halfway through the year, when I was happy to have made it so long without a bad voice crack incident. That day, when I walked through the door, the first thing I noticed was that we had a substitute(代课)teacher. I immediately started thinking about how the sub would need to take attendance. My permanent (长期的)teacher never had to. Since he already knew each student and where they sat, he just had everyone sit down in their assigned seat, and marked “absent” the students whose seats were empty. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I started to feel frightened. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________ The whole class turned to look at me. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________ 5.(2023·安徽·安庆市第二中学模拟预测) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Eleven-year-old Kristina shouted on the phone. Vera, her mother, packing lunches for her two children, heard the shouting and dashed to Kristina. Kristina gave her the phone. Kristina was talking to her father at his doctor’s office in Moscow, Russia. “Vlad, why is Kristina shouting?” began Vera in Russian. “Vera, this afternoon I must attend a conference at her school. But I cannot be there. I have an important meeting. Why don’t you attend it?” Vlad replied. "How can I go?” “You are not going to a forest. You’ll be fine!” “I know, but I can’t speak English properly. It’s a rule at her school.” “You can manage. GO!” Vera turned to Kristina, “Kristina, your father is busy. I will come instead of him.” Kristina shouted, “Mother, you can’t speak English. How can you come to the conference? NO!” She plowed through her mother and ran sobbing. But Vera convinced Kristina. As there was no option, she agreed and left for school. Vera was depressed. She felt that if only she knew English, she could avoid such situations. But “how is it possible for me to learn English while balancing so many tasks?” Suddenly, she realized that Andrei was getting late, so she got him ready and walked him to school. In the afternoon, Vera attended the conference at the school. All the teachers and staff gave a warm welcome to Vera. Kristina kept quieting her mother. All she said were phrases like, “You are embarrassing!” “Stop talking!” and “You do not know English!” Ignoring her daughter’s comments, Vera managed to keep her cool and finished the meeting. After delivering a cake to a customer, Vera went home to start dinner. At home, she asked her mother-in-law where Kristina was. She said that Kristina had gone to study with her friends. While they were talking, Kristina walked in. Vera asked, “Why did you go out? You can study at home, you know!” “I have doubts about English Literature. Can YOU clarify them?” Kristina said in an arrogant (傲慢的) tone. 注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。At dinner, Vera complained about Kristina’s behavior to Vlad. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ The next day, she saw an advertisement from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ 6.(2023·全国·模拟预测) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study. His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do. “Shall we go to the park?” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.” Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football?” “Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.” “That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!” “You won’t beat me,” said Marc. “Oh yes, I will.” “Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!” For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式作答。 “You don’t look happy, Marc. I usually never do community service before, but when I heard the opportunity to join my school’s service club, Interact, I put up my hand without hesitation. The opportunity to help people in need excited me and as I signed up to attend Saint Mary’s Food Bank, the urge of helping people made my body tremble. As I walked after school to Mrs. Green, I could feel the palms(手掌)of my hands becoming wet by the minute. The water of my nerves ran down the side of my head and I could feel the tip of my shirt soaking(湿透)with fresh sweat. The clock ticked and I could feel the time of going to Saint Mary’s Food Bank getting closer. Ten minutes later the bus arrived-and we were on our way to the bank. On the way many things came through my mind. What was it going to look like? Will there be homeless people there, and will I enjoy my experience? As I continued to explore my mind, the bus came to a stop.“We’re here,”said loudly the bus driver. I could feel the palms of my hands beginning to moisturize(变潮湿)once again. As I got off the bus, I fell into a deep doubt. This was the food bank? I had never seen anything like it. To my amazement, it reminded me of a place I would go in Mexico to feed the poor. It was brown, wide and had an old look to it. As we entered the bank as a group, the essence of it was very comfortable. I felt like I was home. Finally my nerves were gone, and I was ready to work. Before we started working, we were given instructions. But as soon as we finished our tour of instructions, the duty of service began. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 We were all divided into groups and given a specific job, ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ Community service can bring out the best of everyone. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ 8.(2023·广东·广州市第三中学二模) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 Hector stood in the front of his fifth-grade classroom as one of the last two competitors in the Room Five Geography Bee. His opponent having missed the last question, it was Hector’s turn. If he answered his question correctly, he would be the Room Five champion. “Where did I put that second sheet of questions?” Mr. Adler whispered while searching through a thick pile of papers on his messy desk. Mr. Adler, though a great teacher, had a reputation of being disorganized with a long history of misplacing things. “Oh well, I apologize for the delay.” said Mr. Adler after what seemed like a long time. “Hector, please tell us the capital city of Brazil.” Hearing the question, Hector smiled. Then, there was the answer. Later that day in the courtyard, many classmates congratulated Hector. Wearing a proud smile, he greeted and thanked them all. Oh, the sweet taste of victory. As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn’t want to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the envelope were the words “Fifth Grade Geography Bee Questions and Answers”. Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the consequences, he opened it and read the questions. As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He’d cheated and whatever he did now, he couldn’t change the fact. “What if Mr. Adler thought I stole this morning’s questions too?” Hector thought. “He’d take away my Room Five victory for sure.” Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a loss what to do. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler’s room. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography Bee. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 9.(2023·浙江·校联考模拟预测) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 April Fools’ Day Nat woke early and jumped out of bed. Today was the best day of the year for him. Nat loved to play tricks, and today was April Fools’ Day. Some of Nat’s tricks were big hits. Last year, he short-sheeted his sister’s bed. She couldn’t understand what was going on and started to think that her legs must have grown much longer during the day. When she realized what had happened, she laughed her head off. Some of Nat’s tricks were not so successful. Mom didn’t think finding a furry toy mouse in the fridge was humorous at all. After she calmed down a bit, she said, “That’s it! There’s a ban on Nat tricks for two weeks.” Nat was also the class clown. He was always making jokes in class. He liked it when he made the other kids laugh. Since it was April Fools’ Day, he felt like he had to come up with something really good to provide his classmates with some really good entertainment. For that, Nat thought long and hard before he came up with his brilliant idea. He bought two toy frogs which were made out of green plastic and looked very realistic. Nat knew just the trick he would play on his classmates. Nat arrived at school early. To succeed in his plan, he needed to get into the classroom before anyone else. Nat’s class had a rainforest terrarium (饲养皿). It had plants, insects, and three frogs in it. Nat’s idea was to pretend that the frogs had escaped. He knew that Ms. Lopez, his teacher, wasn’t afraid of frogs but several of his classmates, including himself, were. Nat slipped into the classroom. Good! There was nobody here. He put one of the toy frogs on the floor, near the terrarium and the other on his friend Stacey’s desk. Nat knew that Stacey really didn’t not like frogs. Also, she played a great trick on him last April Fools’ Day. To make his trick more convincing, Nat pushed the lid of the terrarium open. Then he rushed off to morning gathering. 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右: 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 When the students got back to class, no one noticed the toy frogs at first. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Nat realized that he had opened the lid of the terrarium. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 10.(2023·辽宁·高三统考期末) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 When I was in seventh grade, my parents paid forty dollars a week for a tutor to come to my house and help me with math, which ended up raising my mark from fifty to fifty-five. OK, maybe it was partly my fault. Maybe I should have spent less time worrying about that important geography assignment and more time on math. But math is a tricky thing. And sitting down in a chair to work on confusing algebraic equations(代数方程) for two hours is a slow and painful process. Besides, people around tend to ask. “How’s your math this time?” So I became afraid of anything to do with numbers. The thought of a teacher picking on me in class was terrifying. The red marking was like a component in a horror movie. It only got worse in ninth grade. Every report card I ever received was delivered with the comment: “Victoria needs to ask for assistance in class.” But I couldn’t tell my teachers the real reason why I didn’t ask for help: I didn’t want to be a fool. Every question I had was, in my opinion at the time, something that the entire class could understand but I couldn’t. So instead, I adopted the mindset of not caring about anything and concluding that everything would work out in the end. It didn’t. After spending a semester not caring about homework and not trying on tests, still afraid of math and convinced that I would never succeed, my math teacher called one summer morning to tell me I would spend the next three weeks at school redoing the entire course so I could pass. This news was met with sudden tears, and a loud “this can’t be happening to me!” That’s when it hit me. Why was I scared of a bunch of numbers, anyway? Why did I barely study for tests because I had convinced myself I would never do well? Who was this unconfident student and what happened to that determined and confident teenager I had once been? 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I finally realized that I had let math take over my life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ So I was off to three weeks of summer school, three hours of math each day. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ 11.(2023·全国·高三专题练习) 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。 Ms. Johnson will never forget Chelsea, a wounded soul. Over the years Chelsea had always struggled, both academically and with self-confidence. Additionally, her mother had died after a heroic battle with a terminal illness when Chelsea was a fifth grader. As she began her sixth grade, Chelsea was still hurting. Ms. Johnson worried about her with good reason. Each fall, Ms. Johnson takes the students for a five-day adventure at Wolf Ridge, an environmental learning center in the woods of Northern Minnesota overlooking Lake Superior. The week is filled with learning, team building, and overcoming seemingly impossible challenges. They go in October, and the turning leaves of trees come to symbolize the changes happening to the students over the week. The steps and growth students make at Wolf Ridge become a metaphor Ms. Johnson uses throughout the year as her students face challenges in the classroom. The most difficult activity is the High Adventure Ropes Course, which stretches from tower to tower high amongest the treetops forty feet above the ground. Ms. Johnson knew this experience would be particularly difficult for Chelsea. When it was time for her to fasten the harness (安全带), Chelsea was already trembling. The harness offers physical protection, but not much mental comfort when nothing but a slippery board or an unsteady wire is between your feet and the ground far below. Chelsea stepped hesitantly onto the Swinging Wood Bridge, and only after the instructor’s encouragement, slowly made her way across its shaky boards up to the first tower. With the support of a chaperone (监护人) stationed there, she began her way across the Burma Bridge, made of merely three wires and straps. Her trembling body added to its shaking. From down below, her ground partners shouted up supportively, “Come on, Chelsea, you’re doing great!” Chelsea finally reached the second tower and eventually stepped out onto the next challenge and slowly inched her way across. 注意: 1.续写词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: Now she faced what for many is the most difficult activity: the Single Wire. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2: The final challenge is a zip line (滑索), which requires leaping off the last tower and sliding to the ground. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________
