Pam Bales left her car and stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through
New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. The hike up the lower part of Jewell was pleasant. At 8:30 am,
still below the tree line, she took the first in a series of on-the-trail selfies.
Less than an hour later, she took another photo, after she’d climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She
made her way across the snow-covered ridge toward Mount Washington. Then she noticed something: a single set
of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them much
thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of trainers,
not suitable for hiking on snow.
By 11 am, Bales was getting cold and decided to abandon her plan. The only thing keeping Bales on Gulfside
Trail was the trainer tracks in the sonw. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet (雨夹雪), the tracks made a hard
left-hand turn off the trail.
Now she alarmed. She was sure the hiker could get through in the ow visibility and was heading straight
toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness. Bales stood there, stunned. The temperature and clouds
were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. She turned to the left and called out,
“Hello!” into the frozen fog.
Nothing. She called out again: “Is anybody out there? Do you need help?”
The strong westerly winds carried her voice away. She blew into her rescue whistle. For a fleeting moment she
thought she heard someone reply, but it was just the wind playing games with her mind. She stood listening, then
turned and walked cautiously in the direction of the single set of tracks. Bales followed the tracks cautiously for 20
to 30 meters. She rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless.

Ken Scott kicked of the covers and leapt out of bed at his home in the Rocky Mountain town of
Mullan,Idaho. It was 6 a.m.on January 7, 2020, and he was on a mission: He’d just heard on the radio that the
nearby Silver Mountain Resort had been blessed with nearly a foot and a half of new snow. As a ski addict who’d
worked in the industry for the past 30 years as a ski patroller (滑雪巡逻员)and equipment salesperson, he didn’t
want to miss this perfect skiing chance. These conditions are what skiers live for-even experienced and skilled as
Scott, who, at 55, still skied 100 days a year.
When Scott reached Silver Mountain’s locker room, he ran into his friend Warren, 58, a former ski instructor
who had also been a regular on these slopes for more than two decades.
“Can you believe it?” he said as they changed into their boots. “Sixteen inches! Are you ready?”
For the next hour, the pair skied on various runs under a lightly gloomy sky, making fresh tracks. They were
both in a playful mood. Finally, they reached 16-to-1, an expert-level trail, which was now open. It had been closed
all season over concerns that skiers might cause an avalanche (雪崩). But that morning, patrollers had cleared loose
snow on the peak, reducing the chance of a snowslide.
“What do you think?” asked Warren.
“Let’s go for it!” Scott replied.
When they reached the top of 16-to-1, Warren excitedly looked back at Scott. The huge, toothy grin on his
bearded face was what he needed. He pointed his skis downhill and took off. So thrilled were they that they isolated
everything around them. Flying on the trail, despite the biting wind, their hearts burnt with passion for this great
skiing. Whoomph! A sudden roar from behind nearly deafened them.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local
beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than
not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags
would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by
waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed
down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a
day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with
aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ale silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently,
“You two looked so down. What happened?”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s
those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s
disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix
such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed
through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware
of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our
water supply was dirty. When our pump(水泵)did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump
wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometres to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle
Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place.
Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there
was ... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of
a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle
explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and
started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise(天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. “Jita told me you like animals. Are
you ready to see some?” he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I
turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir
explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed
something just before going off duty at 11 am. I put down the tray(托盘) on the table and suddenly it fell off the
table. At first I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard
patients were screaming.
I realized that an earthquake was happening. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly
frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake
stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland,
where several other people had gathered.
Afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy ,our
ward sister(护士长),I found her patient couldn't walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and
arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check no one was left behind in our
ward(病房).
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other wards with him to help
more people. So we went together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with
rubble(碎石),luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock (余震)struck and the doctor ordered us to leave.

When a tornado(龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completed ruined.
Afterward all the local newspapers carried many human-interest stories featuring some of the families who suffered
the hardest.
One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely
shattered(破碎的) mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at
her side, eyes downward. Clutching(紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with
confusion and fear.
The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I
noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those
less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty
to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them. I brought three large
boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor. Meghan watched seriously, as the
boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods.
While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their
less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.
Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, much-loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box
that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat, painted-on-face, gave her a final kiss, then laid her
gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, Honey,” I said.” You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held-back tears. "Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll
make that other little girl happy, too.”

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to
our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not
having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply
understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions
seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden could
make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting
to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even
if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being
as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire,
so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—
only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still
dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.

I was in about 40 feet of water all by myself. I knew I should not have gone alone, but I was rather competent
and just took a chance. There was not much current, and the water was so warm, clear and attractive. When I got a
cramp (抽筋), I realized at once how foolish I was. I was not too alarmed, but was completely doubled up with
stomach cramps. I tried to remove my weight belt, but I was so doubled up I could not get to the catch. I was
sinking and began to feel more frightened, unable to move. I could see my watch and knew there was only a little
more time on the tank before I would be out of air. I tried to massage (按摩) my stomach. I wasn’t wearing a wet
suit, but couldn’t straighten out and couldn’t get to the cramped muscles with my hands. I thought, “I can’t go like
this! I have things to do!” I just couldn’t die this way with no one to even know what happened to me. I called out
in my mind, “Somebody, something, help me!”
I was not prepared for what happened. Suddenly I felt a push from behind me under the arm. I thought, “Oh
no, sharks!” I felt real fear and desperate. But my arm was being lifted forcefully. Around into my field of vision
came an eye — the most extraordinary eye I could ever imagine. It was smiling. It was the eye of a big dolphin.
Looking into that eye, I knew I was safe. I was flooded with relief. I felt that the animal was comforting me as well
as lifting me toward the surface. My stomach cramps went away and I relaxed with security.
At the surface it drew me all the way into shore. It took me into water so shallow that I began to be concerned
that it might be beached, and I pushed it back a little deeper, where it waited, watching me, I guess to see if I was
all right.

It was a fantastic and cheery early summer day. The sun was shining brilliantly, with clouds dancing in theblue sky. The birds were singing merrily and the colourful flowers were in full bloom. There was a warm gentle
breeze. Bright green leaves swung in the wind, occasionally falling to the ground, cast off from the trees they
trusted.
It was a lovely morning to be outdoors, to enjoy oneself in the splendid beauty of nature. There’s nothing quite
as curative as being out in nature. Little Bear hated being locked at home. He wanted to go out to relieve his
boredom. While his mother was busy with the daily domestic tasks, Little Bear slipped out through the backdoor.
He was so eager for independence that he ignored his parents’ words and raced off into the woods near his home on
his own.
As he jogged along the winding path from his home, Little Bear felt like an adventurer. Soon, the stone path
ended and he found himself in the forest. He had never been so far from home all by himself. As Little Bear
explored the plants of different colors in the abundant green forest, the fear of being alone in the great outdoors
began to wear off. He immediately began to regret his careless decision to escape from his parents.
By afternoon, the sun was burning hot. Little Bear was weak from hunger and thirst. He felt tired and hungry.
He longed for his mother’s cooking. He longed for his nice cosy bed. He longed to go home. Little Bear scanned
the surroundings. Everything looked unfamiliar to him. He was lost! There was not a soul in sight from whom he
could ask for directions. Little Bear sat on a rock, alone and depressed. Looking down, all he could see were his
little paw prints imprinted in the mud.

A Narrow Escape
A feeling of terror came over ten-year-old Chet Roscow. He had been swimming in the A Narrow EscapeMatawan River by himself. But he had the idea that someone or something was watching him.
And then he saw a large gray fin(鳍)slicing through the water like a knife. What was that? Could it be a shark?
That was impossible! Elm Hills was miles and miles from the ocean. How could a shark find its way into this little
river?
But now Chet could see it coming toward him.The shark was bigger than Chet himself. The black eyes staring
up through the water-killer eyes.
Chet dived toward the shore, pounding through the water and kicking with all his might. His feet touched the
bottom. He was running now, looking over his shoulder. The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open
and its white teeth shining in its blooded mouth. Those killer eyes stared at Chet. And then, with a flick of its tail,
the shark pushed itself backward into the water, and disappeared down the river.
Chet rose to his knees and threw up. When he could stand, he suddenly noticed his fiends,Sid,Monty and
Dewey, standing on the dock(码头).Before he could stop them, they had dived into the water.
"Get out of the water!"he screamed."Get out! Get out now!"
He thundered down the path and onto the dock."You have to get out! There's a shark!"
"You hear that,Monty?" Sid said."There's a shark in the river! We'd better get out."
Sid lifted himself up on the dock and took a running leap off the edge of the dock.He jumped into the river
with such an enormous splash that Chet got thoroughly wet. Monty and Dewey dived in after him.
