Melati and Isabel deeply love their home on the island, surrounded by tropical rain forests, green fields, and a
vast ocean. Enjoying a swim at their local beach was once a daily pleasure for them. But when Melati was fifteen,
and Isabel just ten, the sisters started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters near their borne. More
often than not, plastic bags would be around them as they swam and some were scattered on the beach. They got
really upset about that.
Melati didn’t think much about it until one day her teacher gave a lesson on some world heroes. Each of those
people had sparked movements of positive changes in the world. They believed in the impact they could have and
they did inspire more people to do something meaningful. After school, Melati walked home slowly in silence,
concerned about the vast amount of plastic rubbish on the beach. The heroes crossed her mind. If they could do it,
we could do it too, she thought. The idea lit her up. She couldn’t wait to share what she thought with Isabel and
quickened her pace.
“So many plastic bags around! The beach is dirty and messy! It’s so terrible! We have lost the clean and
beautiful beach. Can’t we do something to get it back?” Melati said heartily. Isabel felt a bit puzzled at what to do,
but she also had a strong desire to do something. Picturing a beach as fascinating as before in mind, the pair jumped
with joy.
They talked a lot, anxious to know how Dad and Mom would respond to their ideas. That night when the
family sat by the dinner table, the sisters eagerly got their ideas across. While Mom and Dad listened to the girls
carefully, their eyes shone. “How amazing that would be! We are so proud of you!” Dad exclaimed. Mom came up,
gave them a thumb up and hugged the sisters.

Melati and Isabel decided to make a positive impact straight away. They took advantage of their spare time to
pick up rubbish on the beach. However, it was soon that they realized that they couldn't solve the problem on their
own for there was so much plastic. After discussions and preparations, they started an organization to spread their
idea among youth, involving more youths in the movement, which proved to be a hit. More and more teenagers
took part. In a month, they altogether collected and recycled 2.5 tons of plastic, recovering the beautiful beach.
One month later, Melati received a call from the local newspaper. The two girls were invited to an interview
in which they were asked what inspired them to start the organization, what the biggest challenges are and what
advice they have for young people who want to make changes in this world. They said a team is what keeps them
going on the challenging days and added, “keeping our team engaged and motivated has been a challenge and we
are happy to have a positive influence.” Melati and Isabel are heroes who make a big difference to our world.

It was a lovely spring morning in the mountains of my home. Here was full of natural atmosphere. The sky
was blue, the sun was warm, and the air was fresh. As driving along the winding road, I could see thousands of wild
flowers in bloom. When I turned round, I slowed down as I saw some volunteers picking up garbage along the side
of the road. I just smiled as I saw them doing some cleaning in spring for Mother Earth and my mind suddenly
floated back in time to another spring morning long ago.
When my children were younger, I used to walk along a small route around the lake near my home. It was also
on a spring morning that I noticed much garbage lying along the route. The next day, I brought a big garbage bag
and started to slowly pick up the garbage along my way. All kinds of deserted objects lay all over the floor. There
were pop cans, plastic water bottles, wrappers for candy bars, empty chip bags, pieces of broken fishing line and
even an old shoe. Every time I stopped, I picked up a piece of garbage. And I even fished some garbage out of the
edge of the water. By the time I circled the lake, the garbage bag had been nearly full.
Tired but happy, I put the bag in an empty garbage can. I stopped before I headed home and took one last look
at the lake as the sun set. It looked more beautiful than ever and I felt like the angels were looking down upon it
with me and sharing my smiles.
I always think that at times this world’s problems can seem overwhelming and you may wonder what you can
do to make a difference. But the truth is that every good thing you do matters a lot! I do believe every time I stop to
pick up a single piece of garbage, I can make a difference. As my children are adults now, I decide to spend more
time protecting the environment.

I begin to encourage others to develop the environmental awareness. I know that there is power in numbers,
and I want to get as many people involved as possible. I’ve convinced my children to take action with me like I did
before. We learn to make many cards to hand out to people, with some words about environment protection written
on them. We’ve also set up signs around the lake to remind people to pay attention to the environment. Other
members of my family also go to the lake to pick up garbage on weekends.
Many days have passed, and the surroundings have improved a lot. Thanks to our efforts, the lake has taken on
a new look. The surroundings are clearer and there is no more garbage floating on its water. There is little garbage
on either side of the road along the lake. It is surprising that many people take their garbage away. Few people drop
garbage here. I am pleased to note that more people actively volunteer to pick up the garbage. This gives us more
confidence to protect our nearby environment.

On a hot September afternoon, Peter and his friend Isabel were on their way to the library. When they passed
by Tubman park, Isabel suggested cutting through it to get to the library. As they entered the park, the sight of the
swings (秋千) and the merry-go-round brought back a flood of memories of their childhood spent there. But now
everything looked so old, sad, and dirty. Litter lay on the ground next to an overflowing trash bin. There were still
young schoolchildren playing there but they had to avoid the trash that littered the playground. A little boy told
them that the city took the other trash cans away and the remaining one never got emptied often.
As they headed toward the library, the two high school students wrinkled their forehead. In the library, they
encountered Mrs. Evans, their kind-hearted fifth-grade teacher, retired yet still passionate. Mrs. Evans listened as
Isabel and Peter eagerly explained what they’d seen. Finally, she recommended them to go to the City Hall to voice
their concerns.
The next day, Isabel and Peter went into the building of the City Hall but were met with an impatient officer.
They were informed that the city couldn’t help with their problem due to a tight budget. Discouraged, they left and
turned to Mrs. Evans for help.
Under her guidance, they decided to ask Go Green, a non-profit organization whose goal is to protect the
environment, for help. “This group is good at raising money for projects just like yours, ” said Mrs. Evans. She
promised to arrange them to present their ideas to Go Green. Hearing this, their face lit up.
Two main tasks remained ahead: researching ways to clean up the park and preparing a convincing
presentation. As Isabel was good at researching while Peter always had a talent for speaking, they cooperated quite
well. Isabel learned from a science magazine that a new type of trash bin can squeeze the trash down without being
emptied often, which saves time, money, and energy. Based on this, Peter practiced his presentation over and over
again.

Last week, I went back to my hometown, which used to be a beautiful place, with green trees all over the
mountains and a small river winding through the whole countryside in mind. I couldn’t wait to see my hometown,
资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】which I had always been dreaming of. The mountains, the trees, the river and the people there have always been in
my mind these years.
While I was on the way to my hometown, I looked out of the bus window to enjoy the beautiful scenery at the
same time. My hometown came nearer and nearer. However, I couldn’t believe something strange came into my
eyes: all the trees along the road were gone and lots of sand was blowing in the wind! I wondered if I had taken a
wrong bus. In fact, I hadn’t.
The bus finally arrived. I quickly got off, looking around the place I used to live in. Everything had changed!
Trees were gone, leaving the bare mountains and a dry river. Seeing this, I couldn’t help bursting into tears. I rushed
onto a mountain, trying to find a single tree there, but I failed. There was nothing but sand. I stood still, lost in
thought. In the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. I was just wondering why people cut down all the trees and the
river dried up.
It was not until the next day that I had a chance to talk with my grandfather, who had lived there for over
eighty years. I expressed my puzzlement to him directly. “Well,” he said in a sad voice, “nobody here wants to cut
down trees and make the river dry up, if possible. But all of us have no choice!” My grandfather continued,
getting a little excited. “As the population grows larger and larger, people needed more food to feed themselves.
They had to cut down the trees to make room for growing rice to make a living. Besides, people had to channel
water into the fields. Day by day, trees were gone and the river dried up.”

After I came back from my hometown, it took me a long time to calm down. I still couldn’t believe
people in my hometown would do such foolish things! I decided to do something to raise awareness of protecting

methods of improving living environment. I often talked to my classmates, friends and relatives about our earth,
exchanging my opinions with them. In fact, to my great joy, most of them feel the same way and realize the
importance of protection in mind.
Nowadays, science and technology is developing rapidly. People’s living conditions have been improved a
lot, but I do think people’s awareness of protecting environment should be enhanced at the same time. We must be

When I came back home, my mother was having a conversation with my seven-year-old daughter Jane. They
were talking about how to fight against climate change in the holidays. I interrupted, saying we could do it by
eating leftovers (剩菜) this holiday season. Mom and I both smiled.
I said, “You know Americans throw away 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day,
including things like plastic from old tech and gift wrap. Food waste, which accounts for 30 to 40 percent of year-
round waste entering landfills (垃圾填埋场), also rises sharply during the holidays. During Thanksgiving week
alone, Americans throw out roughly 200 million pounds of turkey meat, along with 30 million pounds of gravy (肉
汁) and 14 million pounds of dinner rolls.”
Jane was puzzled at the figures of food waste but she was interested in the consequences. I told her, “When
thrown-away food makes its way to landfills and rots, it produces methane, a kind of greenhouse gas. That’s not
friendly. It can destroy the ecosystem, threatening the survival of animals, plants and humans on the planet.”
Jane was nervous and asked what we could do to help the earth. “One of the most powerful tools we have is
just to directly decrease our own waste in our home,” my mom said. “It’s also really challenging because most of
资料整理【淘宝店铺:向阳百分百】our waste is happening in different ways. But individual action can also play a huge role in dealing with food waste,
particularly in the US.”
I remember that in my family, there are two traditions when it comes to holiday meals: there must be more
food on the table than everyone can eat, and everyone must take home a plate of food at the end of the meal to
make sure all the hard work that went into its preparation wasn’t wasted.

Jane asked, “why prepare so much food for a holiday?” My mom smiled saying it was to make sure there
was enough for everyone, not just to enjoy the meal but to enjoy leftovers for as long as they wanted. I explained
that not everyone had realized the importance of food and the bad effect of food waste. Eating leftovers could help
us reduce food waste and that planning would go a long way. I asked my daughter whether she would spend a
holiday without wasting food to fight against climate change.
Jane answered “Sure” and hoped to help Grandmother to prepare for dinners. My mom and I both smiled
again. We worked out how many people would attend the party and how much food would be bought. Jane was
happy to take part in the activities. I hope my mom’s method will help her realize the duty to do something for our

To mark their hard work and contribution to wildlife protection in the reserve, last year, Shi’s 20-member team
was recognized with a special award at an online award ceremony for the IUCN World Commission on Protected
Areas’ International Ranger Awards.
Kathy MacKinnon, head of the commission, speaks highly of their work, saying that they are “critical to our
global conservation efforts, helping to stem biodiversity loss and protect the important ecosystems that serve as
natural solutions to climate change and other global challenges".
Shi realizes that through protecting endangered animals, like giant pandas and snow leopards, the rich
biodiversity of the environment can also be maintained, which is a win-win situation.
After graduation from Sichuan Forestry School(now Sichuan Agricultural University) in 1992, Shi became a
forest guardian at the Wolong National Nature Reserve.
Established in 1963, Wolong is the country’s earliest panda reserve. It experienced serious human-animal
conflict, such as illegal logging and hunting before the 1990s. In 1978, an observation tent, claimed to be the
country’s first field camp to study wild giant pandas, was built on a steep forested slope in the reserve.
In the early 1980s, the government cooperated with the World Wide Fund for Nature to establish the China
Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda to save the endangered animal.
At the very beginning, it was really difficult for rangers. With no proper outdoor equipment, like protective
jackets or sleeping bags, every time, going around the area could be a life-threatening adventure. Plastic woven
bags were commonly used for warmth and as makeshift tents for emergency cases. For Shi, the real challenges are
natural disasters, which cannot be predicted.

He has a vivid memory of a snowslide in June 2017 during a routine inspection. “We were about to climb over
a 400-meter-long mountain pass, about 5, 500 meters in altitude, which was the most dangerous place for us with
snow depth on the ground reaching up to two meters and the wind blowing heavily, ” Shi says. Suddenly Shi heard
thundering sounds and a mass of snow came tumbling down the mountain. Quickly throwing himself at the rock
and grabbing onto it, Shi survived but was injured.
There is a lot of hard work involved in protecting wildlife, but there are also some surprises from the job. Shi
has a soft spot for giant pandas. Although he has patrolled the reserve for three decades, he has only met the pandas
twice. In order to record videos of the wild giant pandas in the reserve, they searched for them for several days in
the forest, but didn’t spot one. When they were about to give up, there was a sound from the bamboo forest behind,
and they turned around and saw a fat panda about six meters away, hiding in the woods. It ran quickly. It was funny
to see a group of people chasing the panda in the wild. The scene is just like hide-and-seek which will never be
forgotten.

“I just want a normal birthday party,” April told Bailey as they walked home from school.
Bailey knew what April meant. April’s parents loved the environment. And because April happened to be born
on Earth Day, all her parties had an Earth Day theme.
“Remember when you turned seven?” said Bailey.
“How could I forget the Throw-Out Blowout?” said April.
“We helped out at your garage sales and donated the money to charity. And when you turned eight...”
“It was a Tree Spree,” finished April. “We planted maples.” “Last year, we all collected newspapers to
recycle,” said Bailey. “The Print Sprint.” April groaned.
Bailey giggled. “I thought it was fun.”
Later that night, as April loaded the dishwasher, she said, “I’d like to plan my own party this year.”
“Sure,” said Mom. “We could have a Composts Carnival.” “Great idea!” said Dad.
April cleared her throat. “I’d like to go to Maze Craze instead.” “Really?” said Dad, surprised.
“I guess we could do that. Dad and I can send you kids there.” said Mom.
April couldn’t wait for her birthday! She and her friends would have so much fun. And they wouldn’t have to
think one bit about the earth.
At school the next day, April told her friends. “I’m having my birthday party at Maze Craze!”
“You are?” said Josie. “But we always do something earthy on your birthday.” “Remember that salamander we
found two years ago?” said Tyler. “Yeah,” said April. “This year, we’re not even going outside.”
“Oh!” said Tyler.
The following weekend, everyone gathered in the parking lot outside of Maze Craze. “Thanks for coming,”
said April. “I’ve been so excited about my party. No shovels.
No collecting recyclables. Nothing earthy about it.” She shifted her feet. “Then I got here this morning and
saw this parking lot.”
April’s friends glanced around. Plastic bottles bounced across the ground. Newspapers and fast-food sacks
blocked the storm drain. Shopping bags rustled in the trees.

to turn a blind eye to such a mess. She turned around to her friends, “How about picking the trash first?” Her
proposal was quickly approved by others and soon they were in business. April’s mum grabbed some gloves from
the trunk while her dad managed to remove those shopping bags in the trees. With the bags, April and Bailey
collected scattered bottles. By the drain, Josie and Tyler made great efforts to clear the blockage. Many hands make
light work. In a short while, three bags were filled with cans and newspapers to recycle.
April looked at the collected rubbish and smiled. Then she looked up at her friends. Their neat clothes for
the birthday party were soaked with sweat, but their faces glowed with satisfaction. It felt so good to do something
for the earth. “Happy Earth Day, everyone,” said April. “Now we are ready for Maze Craze.” “Happy Birthday,

In the little village of Meadowbrook, surrounded with rolling hills, lived two curious and adventurous twins,
Sarah and Sam. At the age of twelve, the inseparable twins were always seeking new adventures.
One morning, Miss Harper, their favorite community service teacher, was introducing community volunteer
work. Sam suddenly caught sight of the hill behind the schoolyard and was instantly inspired with the idea of
climbing to the top.
“Sarah, ”whispered Sam, “Wouldn’t it be splendid if we climbed to the top of that hill today? It’s said to hold
breathtaking views of our beloved village. ”
Hearing that, Sarah’s face lit up with excitement, her heart filled with eagemess. “Oh, Sam, that sounds great!
But we promise Papa and Mama we will save our pocket money and not spend a single penny unnecessarily. ”With
determination in their hearts, the twins worked out a plan. They decided to bring homemade snacks and refreshing
drinks from their own kitchen, ensuring they wouldn’t spend a penny.
The twins set off on their journey, their backpacks filled with sandwiches, cookies, and bottles filled with cool,
clear water from the village well. As they walked along the path, they noticed colorful trash scattered (散落) about,
which ruined the natural beauty surrounding them.
A brilliant idea flashed into Sarah’s mind. “Why don’t we pick up the litter along the way?We could clean up
our beloved countryside and maybe even earn a few coins by recycling the materials. ”
Excited by the idea, the twins eagerly collected the scattered items. As they reached the foot of the hill, their
bags heavy with the collected waste, they came across a recycling center. With excitement, they exchanged their
findings for shiny coins. With newfound treasures in their pockets, they climbed up the hill.
When they reached the top, they were greeted by a breathtaking view of their village. “It’s so beautiful!”Sam
burst out,” We must share our adventure with Miss Harper and our classmates!”

It was such a nice day and it’s Sunday. I left for the park with my skateboard. There were so many kids in the
central square. The parents chatted merrily in small groups, occasionally taking a glance at their kids. I skated for
about half an hour and took a break on the nearby bench. Early summer morning was always the best time, the bird
chirping in the trees and cool winds blowing in my face. How could I miss it? Dad said he was going to mow the
lawn in the yard on the weekend and asked whether I could help. I made an excuse and just ran away.
I took a look around the park before I stood up and spotted an old man on the far side of the park. He kept
bending forward and threw something into a plastic bag with him I watched for a while and realized what he was
doing. He was picking up the litter. At first, I thought he might be a cleaner working in the park but I had never
seen him before. “Who is he? It’s Sunday and he is not here for fun?” I talked to myself. I went on skating and
forgot about him.
Time went fast and the sun was already high up in the sky. It was getting hot and I was tired. I was ready to go
when I saw the old man again. The park was hall empty. He was still there, collecting the rubbish left on the
benches with much elfort. Time and time again, he stopped to straighten his body but he showed no sign of leaving
soon. Clearly, it was hard work for people of his a age.
“Not to leave? What if he has no water left in such hot weather?” I wondered.
With some hesitation, I walked toward him.
