阅读下面材料，根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段，使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An abandoned dog stopped at the front door of the Laceys’ small house, wagging its tail, trembling with
shyness and cold. Doris Lacey, whose school had been called off because of the snow, spotted the creature and
immediately went up to meet it.
“Where did that come from?” Mrs. Lacey asked as soon as Doris put the dog down in the kitchen. Mr. Lacey
was at the table, cleaning his fingernails. “I don’t know where it came from, ” he said mildly, “but I know for sure
where it’s going.”
Doris hugged the dog hard against her. She said nothing.
Because of the snow, the roads would be too bad for travel for many days. Mr. Lacey couldn’t get out to take
the dog to the animal shelter in the city right away. He agreed to let it sleep in the basement while Mrs. Lacey
unwillingly let Doris feed it leftover food.
Four days passed and the dog did not complain. It never cried in the night or barked at the wind. It didn’t tear
up everything in the basement. It wouldn’t even follow Doris up the basement steps unless it was invited. It was a
good dog.
Several times Doris had opened the door in the kitchen that led to the basement and the puppy had been there,
all stretched out, on the top step. Doris knew it had wanted some company and that it had lain against the door,
listening to the talk in the kitchen, smelling the food, being a part of things. It always wagged its tail, eyes all
sleepy, when she found it there.
Even after a week had gone by, Doris didn’t name the dog. She knew her parents wouldn’t let her keep it, that
her father made so little money and any pets were out of the question, and that the dog would definitely go to the
shelter when the weather cleared. Still, she tried talking to them about the dog at dinner one night. “She’s a good
dog and not much trouble, right?” Doris said, hoping one of them would agree with her. But Mr. Lacey shook his
head, “You know we can’t afford a dog, Doris. You try to act more grown-up about this.” Doris fell silent, praying
the weather would never clear.

from the woods. Why could Torgy come home remarkably clean as a dog on the move?
“Where have you been, Torgy?” I turned his head toward me and looked him in the eyes. He licked my nose.
A week later, Mom took us on a walk downtown. It is only four blocks from our house to the middle of the
town, which is how small it is. We walked down Division Street, which brought us right by the Webb Fur Salon, the
newest store in town and the only one with air conditioning.
In the middle of summer, it wasn’t easy to sell furs. It was said Mr. Webb, the store owner, was offering some
discounts in order to attract customers. The air conditioning also provided a comfortable environment for this
purpose.
“Let’s see which fur I’m going to pick out today,” Mom said as she approached the display window where the
expensive, fur-hanging mannequins (人体模特) were on show. She looked in the window and stopped dead in

to force the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they
wouldn’t come close enough to claim him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. By then, the young goose had
clearly decided we were his new family, so we had to give him a name. My eight-year-old sister, Joanna, called the
little guy Peeper because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. We also decided
that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, until almost a year passed.

Out in the hall, I opened the attic door—very slowly. The noise stopped. I climbed a few steps. My eyes were
at floor level. I saw nothing but boxes and trunks and an old dollhouse. I climbed to the top of the stairs with Rob
after me.
Silence.
“Let’s look around, ”I said.
I found the animal behind a box near the chimney. You guessed it. Black with a white stripe down its back.
Was he scared? You bet. At least that’s how I remember it.
I backed away. Would he spray me? Do skunks bite?
“Hey, Rob. I found him. Let’s go to figure out a plan to get him out of here. ”We climbed down the steps
quietly.
“It’s a skunk, ”I said. “It might even be Marmalade. ”“Marmalade?”
I explained. But was this really the same skunk? Would he remember?

Elephants are fantastic mothers — ET would never leave her baby unattended. Apparently, the baby elephant
had somehow slipped under the fence.
Amanda and I had to get her inside the house to keep her safe until we could get her back to her mother. Her
frightened eyes stared at us through the leaves. I walked slowly toward the Ellie. She watched me but as soon as I
was within touching distance, she ran behind the house. Amanda and I ran after her. Finally, we managed to corner
