My mother glanced at me. Something she never did before I had a stepfamily. "You could have
picked it up," she said. "That would have been the kind thing to do."
I realized how poorly I tied the string on my skirt which was over leggings. I should have asked
mom for help.
✅技巧:细节描写(skirt over leggings)具象化场景,should have done结构强化追悔莫及的心理。
Thinking about what I had done to him, regret and guilt overwhelmed me like endless tides.
Watching Shirley's smile fading away, Peter frowned.
I’m so sorry," he said, gently petting Jackson’s head.
His mother silenced him by gently putting her finger on his lips, gave a soft kiss on his forehead
and walked out of the study.
Cheerful singing floating in the room, the two sisters immersed themselves in the beauty of the
music.
It was Henry's kindness that made me feel the warmth from our family. I will treasure it with all
my heart.
From then on, the three chocolates rang the alarm in his heart every time he intended to lie,
reminding him to be honest.
I nodded firmly, knowing a flower of kindness and friendship began to blossom in both of our
hearts.

A MOTHER'S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother's Day.
How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French
toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff
knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They
decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the
French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jema found the bread and put two slices into
the egg mixture. Next, Jef turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going
smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it
cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But
the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jef to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But
Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she
caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

A vacation with my mother
I had an interesting childhood: It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother —
loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about
her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few
weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David,
my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them
again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment,
and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home
to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving
while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout (放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and
play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…
I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about
to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some
time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we
could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom nevercould understand our objections. If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been
delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier and on
Saturdays he would ask me to go with him. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There
were animals to see, people to visit, and chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.
In the spring, Dad delivered boxes full of baby chickens, and when I was a boy it was such fun to stick
your fingers through one of the holes of the boxes and let the baby birds peck (啄) on your fingers.
On Dad’s final day of work, it took him well into the evening to complete his rounds because at least one
member from each fatuity was waiting at their mailbox to appreciate him for his friendship and his years of
service. “Two hundred and nineteen mailboxes on my route,” he used to say, and a story at every one. One
lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail in to her every day because she was nearly blind. He once lectured
me that to bring everyone plain pleasure is his greatest pleasure, which has clung to me so far.
Mailboxes were sometimes used for things other than mail. On cold days Dad might find one of his
customers waiting for him with a cup of hot chocolate. A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so she
left a few buttons on the envelope in the mailbox; Dad paid for the stamps.
With a heavy heart, I traveled back to my hometown on the sad occasion of Dad’s death, and the
mailboxes along the way reminded me of some of his stories. I thought I knew them all, but that wasn’t the
case.
As I drove home, I noticed two lamp poles, one on each side of the street. When my dad was around,
those poles supported wooden boxes about four feet off the ground. One box was painted green, and the other
was red, and each had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: Santa Claus, NORTH POLE. Foryears children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes. I was among the kids whose letters were
always answered in time.
I made a turn at the corner and drove past the post office and across the railroad tracks to our house. Mom
and I were sitting at the kitchen table when I heard footsteps. There, at the door, stood Frank Townsend, Dad’s
postmaster and great friend for many years. Threads of silver ran through his beard and the hair. Obviously,
time and sorrow for the past days ploughed deep wrinkles on his brow. Sitting down at the table, he began to
tell old stories.

School was over, the day was fading and it started to rain. I stood at the school gate, with a loaded
backpack on my shoulders. It was Friday again—a weekend of joy with unlimited sleeping hours and dinner
courses specially made to my taste. I waved goodbye to my friends as they jumped into their fathers’ warm
and comfortable cars. Curiously, this gave rise to a disturbing feeling in me. It was not exactly what theycalled jealousy (嫉妒), but something like depression. I knew all I could expect was an old bike Mom would
ride along on, with the badly-oiled chain creaking against the wheel to announce her arrival.
Every Friday when Mom came to pick me up, it was a moment full of great expectation and great unease.
I always felt my face burning as we rode our way in and out of the cars and saw my friends’ faces sticking out
of the car windows. It was like stepping into a ballroom with beautifully dressed ladies and finding yourself in
a smelly T-shirt.
To tell you the truth, Mom is quite a headache occasionally. She looks like a homely middle-aged
housewife. She knits (编织) most of my sweaters, chiefly in old styles. Whenever caught by some curious
classmates asking what brand my sweaters are, I’d force a smile and reply in a half-joking manner:
homemade. She simply doesn’t seem to understand what’s in fashion; Chanel or Gucci means nothing to her.
I couldn’t remember when I started to find her such an embarrassment. As a little boy, I relied on her so
much. She had been working at home, cooking in the kitchen, knitting by the lamp, or riding across town to
buy me a book I badly needed. It had always been fun riding with her. I had enjoyed watching our shadows
growing longer and shorter in an alternate fashion by the light of the streetlamps along the road. Just now there
seemed to be something standing between us, something that made her so strange to me and me to her.

Todd was lying on the family room floor doing math homework, when he heard his mother, back from
her shift at the Crafts Cottage. She was later than usual, so she must have stopped on the way home to get
groceries after her work. Todd hoped so. Groceries were one of life’s good things. It was getting late, and Todd
felt a bit hungry. As a matter of fact, he could hear his stomach growling. He only had some cereal for
breakfast this morning. If only he could have a bite at his favorite food—the apple pie made by his mother!
But it had been a while since she made desserts for them, for she had been much occupied recently.
His mother came into the family room and clicked off the TV. Todd looked at Amy, who was so lost in
her book that she didn’t seem to notice their mother’s presence in the room. But their father, dozing (打瞌睡)
on the couch with the remote in his hand, came awake with a guilty startle (惊吓).
“David, Todd, Amy.” Quiet voices could sound so much more threatening than shouting ones. “I need
you to come into the kitchen. Now!”
Amy put her book down then, and the three of them dragged their feet into the kitchen. If they had tails,
they would have been tucked (藏住) between their legs.
“Look at this place.” Todd’s mother said.
It was bad: newspapers in an untidy heap on the table, dirty dishes everywhere, an empty milk carton
standing on the counter next to spilled cereal left over from breakfast, and two bags of groceries his mom had
just carried in from the car.
“I want this cleaned up. I want these groceries put away. I want a decent meal represented on the table in
sixty minutes. Call me when it’s ready. I’m going to be upstairs soaking in a hot tub.” Then she was gone.

Larry had butterflies in his stomach. Today was the day for him to meet his girlfriend Kate’s parents. He
was planning to leave them a good impression, so he was in his finest suit. On the way, he secretly recited a
few jokes he picked up online the previous night. His weird behavior caught Kate’s attention.
“What are you doing, honey?” she asked. Blushing, Larry told her what he was doing. She, on the other
hand, actually found his eagerness to please her family quite cute. “Well, let’s hear your jokes.” she said
teasingly.
They were so immersed in their chatter and laughter that before they knew it, they had arrived at the
house of Kate’s parents, who gave them a warm welcome. As an orphan, that night, Larry felt the love and
warmth he had always longed for since childhood.
The next day, they drove downtown to pick their engagement ring. Everything was working out just
perfectly. However, on their way home, a truck driven by a drunk driver smashed into their car, sending it
flying off the roadside down a steep hill before it got stuck between several trees.
Larry struggled out of his seat to save the then unconscious Kate. As he made every effort to wake her up,
the car began to slip down again. With only seconds to act, he hastily removed her seat belt and pushed her out
of the car before it fell downhill again with him trapped inside.
A rescue team finally arrived and drove them to a nearby hospital. Under the doctors’ treatment, Kate
woke up the next day. She was only slightly injured, but Larry remained unconscious due to severe damage

At nine years old, I went through more than the usual amount of change for a girl of my age. In the past
few months, my stable and predictable life had been turned upside down when my parents lost their jobs
because of the economic crisis. This set into motion a series of events, including my parents losing our
beautiful Victorian home and forcing our family into a fifteen - foot pull trailer we’d previously only used for
weekend camping trips.
Life in the trailer was tough. We were incredibly crowded. When Mom, Dad, my brother and I all sat on
the sofa at the end of the trailer, the entire front end began to tip in our direction, forcing one of us to jump up
and rush to the front. Worse still, our food was not enough.
One day, my mother sat at the small table and casually wrote a wishing list on a paper towel — all about
food, while keeping an eye on the last of our food, fried chicken, on the stovetop. “We need to pray,” she said
aloud. “We don’t have enough food to last the week.” Then we joined hands and asked God to offer us some
food.
Then Mom left the wishing list on the table, got up and started putting the chicken on a plate for dinner. I
opened the tiny door and let the smell of dinner follow me as I wandered outside to find my dad. He wasworking on our broken-down truck. As Dad leaned over the engine, I noticed a disheveled man walking up to
our trailer.
“Can I help you, sir?” my dad asked in his friendly way.
“I’m hoping you can,” he said, “I’m hungry and was wondering if you had any food to spare.”
I looked up at Dad, knowing we didn’t have much.
“Sure!” Dad said without hesitation. He brushed off his hands and went inside, quickly returning with a
fresh piece of fried chicken wrapped in a paper towel. The man’s face lit up.

It’s hard to talk to dads sometimes. The roles we often expect our fathers to play—protector, provider—
can make them seem impenetrable(不可理解的). That’s how it was with my dad. He came to Canada at the
age of ten and settled in an immigrant community. He was never much of a talker. He rarely drank, so we
didn’t get to see him loosen up after a few beers. He didn’t tell stories about himself at the dinner table orwhen we went for walks in the park. He was a private person and seemed to want to stay that way.
Bringing up the many questions I had about life before I was born-his early hopes and dreams, loves and
heartbreaks—let alone sharing my own feelings, felt like too much for us to handle. I didn’t want to threaten
the integrity(完整)of his hard shell. I had gotten used to it, and it made me feel secure.
But when my relationship and career took a hit a year ago at the same time, things had to change. I was
facing serious questions about my own nature, and I wanted to know that he had faced them, too. I needed to
know how he had found his way, because I felt like I had lost mine.
In a severe moment of desperation, it occurred to me that sending an email might be the key. An email
can be crafted(精心制作)slowly and carefully. I could speak at a comfortable distance and give him room to
adjust. He’d be up in his office—a comfortable place filled with bookshelves, dusty CD-ROMs and piles of
old newspapers. I’d be at my desk in an apartment 20 minutes away.
So I wrote to him. I told him about my regrets and fears, and I asked him to answer, if he felt like it, and
to share something about himself, something that would give me much-needed perspective on my life,
especially on relationship and career.

“Surya, you should not take it so lightly. I have an idea. My brother, Ajay, works in a Detective Agency. I
will tell him. I am sure he will agree to follow her. Since Priya does not know him, she will not get
suspicious.”
Surya kept silent for a while, finally agreed.
On Wednesday, Surya got a call in the office.
“Hello! Surya? This is Ajay?”
“Yes, Ajay. Any news?”
“Plenty. Can you come to Arts College at 4.30 in the evening?”
“Why?”
“I will explain when we meet.”
Sharp at 4.30, Surya parked his scooter in front of the Arts College Building. Ajay was waiting for him.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of
visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On
the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying
their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting
for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly
“Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair
but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly
and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!”
Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time.
They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees
stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like
soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by
their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs...How many merry moments they spent with
Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn't get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack
said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being
caged!” Jack shook his head.
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!”

arrival, doctors pointed out that her head was measuring quite large. Within days, she was diagnosed with
sagittal craniosynostosis. Doctors explained that she’d need surgery. They also noticed that her limbs and
fingers were measuring quite short, so Bridie went through genetic testing to find out why. When the results
came back, my wife and I met with the specialist. “Bridie has Mainzer-Saldino syndrome,” he said. He also
revealed the rare condition would cause reinal (视网膜的) degeneration, meaning she could go blind and
develop kidney (肾) disease.
So, when Bridie fell ill in 2019 with common flu, it caused a loss to her little body. Sadly, the
medications she needed to help her recover weakened her kidneys even further. By December that year, her
specialist revealed they were only functioning at 30 percent. “If it gets any worse, she will need to start
dialysis (透析),” he admitted, adding that a transplant might be required sooner than we first thought.
It broke my heart, and I knew I had to step up to help save my girl. So I volunteered to give her one of
my kidneys right away. After undergoing multiple tests, I was declared a match. But there were still several
barriers I had to overcome before I had the all-clear to donate.
“You’ll have to lose 15 kilos before we consider you fit to transplant,” the specialist told me in June. He
gave me two months to get into shape. At 96.5 kilos, I wasn’t overweight, but I needed to lower my BMI to be
fit for the surgery.

It was six o’clock when Breanna heard her mother’s phone receive a text message as it’s at on the kitchen
bench. “Mum, I bet it’s Dad!” Breanna said and jumped up from the sofa, books spilling out in front of her.
She had been deciding which story her dad would read in one of his funny voices for the night. Breanna’s
mum rubbed her temples (太阳穴) and sighed softly. “Honey, would you mind seeing if that’s Daddy? I’ve got
a bad headache but I want to start cooking a lovely meal for us to enjoy tonight.”
“Sure, mum,” Breanna skipped into the kitchen to check the phone. Her dad had been away for two
whole nights working on a malfunction (故障) at his company’s warehouse that was at risk of theft. Breanna
felt sure he’d been able to act like a superhero and save the day — but did it have to take so long? She picked
up the phone and read the message, “Just leaving now — can’t wait to see you both.” Breanna confirmed
excitedly, “It’s from Daddy! He’s on his way home!”
Her mother managed a weak smile as her daughter clapped her hands with joy. It had been four months
since she’d lost her job and with only one income to support the family. Her husband had taken on as many
shifts and extra duties as he could to make ends meet. Times were tough and he was working long hours, but it
made the time Breanna spent with her daddy even more special. “Oh, that’s wonderful news. Now let’s see
what I can find to eat,” her mother rose painfully from the sofa and added.
