A Day Above the Earth
Chen Wei had dreamed of becoming an astronaut ever since she was a girl. Nothing, however, could have prepared her for her first morning aboard the space station, when gravity seemed to disappear and the absence of weight turned every small movement into something new. She would float out of her sleeping cupboard, catch the handrail, and watch the blue curve of the Earth turn slowly below.
Space had always been her calling, so the endless chores never seemed to bother her. Small tasks occupy most of her hours: checking the mission plan, recording data, and helping to evaluate how the human body changes far above the Earth.
Once she placed a tiny creature— a mosquito carried up for study — under a microscope, hoping the results might cast new light on how living things adapt to space.
Maintenance was a constant duty, for in circumstances like these even a loose screw could grow into a serious problem. In view of the team's exposure to radiation above the atmosphere, everyone wore a small badge that made an invisible danger visible.
Comfort was a rare luxury; water had to travel through a narrow tube, and furthermore every meal arrived in a sealed pack. Even sleep sometimes needed a pill, because rest was vital if the team were to stay sharp.
Yet nothing was ever left to chance. Strict rules and self-discipline governed each hour, and in the circumstances, that order was exactly what kept them all safe.

The Long Road to the Stars
For Lin Hao, the school trip to the space museum was altogether a day he would never forget. He was not the kind of boy who put leisure above everything else; what he really wanted was to understand where the stars had come from.
In the main hall, a guide — a retired mechanic who had once worked at a famous space centre — welcomed the group. He explained that the crew, drawn from different countries, comprise some of the finest talents of a generation, and that each shuttle used to fly between Earth and space with incrediblyconstant precision.
On a huge screen, live coverage of a launch was playing, and the guide asked the students to scan the numbers on the wall: the total frequency of launches, the cost of each investment, and the hydrogen that would lift a rocket far above the clouds.
"Given the money involved," he said, "support is never permanent; every agency must fight for its purse. That is also the motive behind so many private companies today." A tale of failure and success, he added, hides behind every flight, and it is plain to see that no single mind could ever calculate the whole journey alone.
Near the window stood a telescope. "Point it up," the guide smiled, "and you will see the universe for yourself. An astronomer may study the origin of a star, but its orbit is what keeps it steady.
Our own administration and a small assistant team spend years on such work, for the foundation of every flight is careful study — it was science that first began to lay the foundation for modern spacecraft."
Then he opened an old kit of tools. "It is merely a grain of dust," he said, holding up a crucial little part, "yet in the right hands even this may find shelter, and today nuclear power can carry a craft beyond the planets."
That night, Lin Hao looked up and knew his future had begun.
