M: And on the day of the show, do you practice everything on the stage first? W: I always go there, but just to get the feel of moving around it, making a mental note of how many steps I can take in any direction. I want songs to sound fresh when I do them, but they won’t be fresh to you if you’ve been singing them all day. M: What do you do after that? W: I often go and take a seat in one of the front rows. I try to imagine myself up there later on, giving a really great performance, fans clapping and cheering, things like that. Whether or not that actually happens, it certainly makes me feel I can do it, and that’s the important thing. Then I go back to my dressing room, which is usually nice and quiet, and get ready. M: And one final question: what do you drink before you perform? W: Well, coffee is not good for your voice because it dries out your mouth and throat. Tea and Cola are also best avoided, but your throat can be cleared by having a glass of freshly squeezed lemon or orange. M: Thank you, Lily, and good luck with your next tour. Hoping to make it into the school basketball team next year? Or maybe get an A in chemistry? Regardless of what your goal is or how big it is, if you’re a young person who wants to accomplish something, you’ve come to the right place. This guide to goal setting for teens is definitely for you! When it comes to goal setting, SMART goals are the top dog. This well-established tool for goal setting is highly influenced by Locke and Latham’s goal setting theory and used by almost every major company out there. If there’s one tool for goal setting for teens to understand, it’s this one. You’ll probably encounter it later on in university or your career as well too! When creating a SMART goal, here’s what you need to consider...A SMARI goal is... Specific→State exactly what you will accomplish Measurable→Progress is trackable and you will know when you achieve it Attainable→It is possible for you to achieve the goal Relevant→It is consistent with your values, interests and other goals Timely→Includes fair, but firm deadlines Where to start? 1. Start by thinking about your whole job and the broad areas (or “buckets”) of responsibility and results over which you have control. 2. Develop a goal statement for each bucket. To get the scale right, remember to focus on end results, rather than tasks. 3. Goals should be high level enough to include the core outcomes for which you are responsible, but specific and clear enough so you will be able to measure success. 4. Goals should be on-going job responsibilities and any new projects and assignments that are specific to this performance cycle. 5. Having too many goals can be an indicator that your goals are defined at too detailed a level and are focused more on tasks than on end results. 6. If it seems that your goals are becoming too many and focus on individual tasks, it may be helpful to consider combining several goal statements into a broader outcome area. 21. The author recommends SMART most probably because ______. A. he is a trainer for a major company B. it is a tool well supported by theory C. the readers need it for their future life D. teens are big dreamers but not doers 22. Xiao Ming, an average high school student, writes the following goal for the new semester: My goal is to raise my scores above 90(out of 100) in all my classes this semester because getting good scores will help me get into a good college. Which two criteria of SMART are seriously missing in Xiao Ming’s goal statement? A. Relevant, Measurable. B. Specific, Attainable. C. Measurable, Attainable. D. Relevance, Timely. 23. According to the guide’s Where to Start, which is the most important factor to consider? A. The sense of responsibility. B. The measurement of success. C. A good knowledge of tasks. D. The right level of goals.【答案】21. B 22. D 23. 根据第二段“This well-established tool for goal setting is highly influenced by Locke and Latham’s goal setting theory and used by almost every major company out there.(这个完善的目标设定工具深受 洛克和莱瑟姆的目标设定理论的影响,几乎被所有大公司所使用。)” 小明的目标是“My goal is to raise my scores above 90 (out of 100) in all my classes this semester because getting good scores will help me get into a good college.(我的目标是本学期所有课程的成绩都要提高到 90分以上(满分100分),因为取得好成绩可以帮助我进入一所好大学)”,根据表格中的“Relevant→It is consistent with your values, interests and other goals(相关→它与您的价值观,兴趣和其他目标一致)”和 “Timely→Includes fair, but firm deadlines(适时→包括公平但严格的截止日期)”可知,小明的目标中缺乏与 他的价值观、兴趣和其他目标一致的相关内容,并且没有目标达成的截止日期。 根据“Where to start”部分中 “2. Develop a goal statement for each bucket. To get the scale right, remember to focus on end results, rather than tasks.(2. 为每个目标制定一个目标声明。要获得正确 的比例,记住关注最终结果,而不是任务。)”、“3. Goals should be high level enough to include the core outcomes for which you are responsible, but specific and clear enough so you will be able to measure success.(3. 目标应该足够高,包括你负责的核心结果,但也要足够具体和清晰,这样你才能衡量成功。)”、“4. Goals should be on-going job responsibilities and any new projects and assignments that are specific to this performance cycle.(4. 目标应该是正在进行的工作职责以及特定于此绩效周期的任何新项目和任务。)”、 “5. Having too many goals can be an indicator that your goals are defined at too detailed a level and are focused more on tasks than on end results.(5. 目标太多可能表明你的目标定义得太详细,更关注任务而不是最终结 果。)”和“6. If it seems that your goals are becoming too many and focus on individual tasks, it may be helpful to consider combining several goal statements into a broader outcome area.(6. 如果你的目标似乎变得太多,并 且集中在单个任务上,那么考虑将几个目标声明合并到一个更广泛的结果领域可能会有所帮助。)”可知, 这几条内容说明了制定目标要注意平衡,目标既要足够高,又要明确和清晰;应该是正在进行的工作职责 以及特定于此绩效周期的任何新项目和任务;既不能将目标定得过于繁琐、注重具体任务,也不能过于宽 泛,核心在于把握目标的“层次”或“范围”是否合适。故选D。B This year, my two oldest sons asked me to sign them up for piano lessons. For certain reasons, I decided it would also be a good time for me to take up the piano again, after 30 years. As a child, I learned not just the piano, but the cello. I played in two orchestras and sang in the school choir. No one forced me to do any of it, but it wasn’t quite a free choice either. When you are the approval-addicted daughter of an over-invested mother, no one needs to apply force. My mom and I were well matched partners in the dance of unspoken expectation and approval-seeking. I did her forcing for her. For my mother, my musical industriousness wasn’t so much about achievement as identity. She was American by birth, and after marrying my university professor father and moving to London, she spent a decade working to be accepted into the impatient, fraught world of British intellectual society. In this environment, a diligent daughter lugging a giant cello was a tiny amount of cultural capital, a ticket to belonging. As much as anything could, music made me into the person my mother needed me to be, so that she could be the person she needed to be, in order to escape who she actually was. And for my part, although I never truly believed that my mother’s love was conditional, I did have the suspicion that there was a performance-related bonus in there. It was foolish to think that taking up the piano at the same time as my own children would be emotionally uncomplicated. Or perhaps the complication was exactly why I sought it out. Somehow, the piano lessons turn me into both my childhood self, seeking my mother’s approval, and into my mother herself, putting the same high expectations on my own children. My mother was lucky in that I was temperamentally (性情地) suited to the role she assigned me. My sons are not so much so. They are rambunctious and restless, not wired for lengthy sessions of sitting still and reflecting well on me. Unconditional love may be at the defining heart of parenthood, but sometimes it can feel impossible to accommodate unconditional love to the worldly practices of day-to-day parenting. The whole job seems set up for conditionality: It would be dishonest to pretend that we have no stake in wanting our children to reflect our own values and preferences. I’m disappointed when my sons won’t play their role in the script I have written for them, but deep down, I’m also a little thrilled. They are maddeningly, gloriously resistant to the pressure. A secret part of me is delighted by their raging demands for full personhood — beyond my projections and hopes and fears. By the life they claim. 24. The underlined sentence in paragraph two means ______. A. the author demanded to learn musical instruments out of pure love B. the author forced her mum to sign her up for piano lessons against her willC. the author’s mom pushed her to learn musical instruments for her own sake D. the author offered to learn musical instruments to obtain her mom’s approval 25. The author’s mother think of the author’s musical industriousness as ______. A. a symbol more of family achievement than of social identity B. a way for her to fit into the British intellectual society at that time C. proof of her ability to be a qualified mother in front of her husband D. a result of her selfless cultivation more than the author’s own diligence 26. Which of the following is TRUE from the author’s perspective? A. She doesn’t care about her sons’ levels of playing musical instruments. B. She has a mixed feeling towards her sons’ reluctance to practise musical instruments. C. She feels sorrowful because her sons are unlikely skilled at playing musical instruments. D. She is still convinced that her sons could be as talented on musical instruments as she was. 27. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. Can Musical Talents Really be Inherited? B. Can We Really Force Our Children to Love Music? C. Can We Really Love Our Children Unconditionally? D. Can Playing Instruments Help Us Fit into Intellectual Society? D 25. B 26. B 27. 根据文章第二段划线处上句“When you are the approval-addicted daughter of an over-invested mother, no one needs to apply force. My mom and I were well matched partners in the dance of unspoken expectation and approval-seeking. (如果你是过度投入的母亲的女儿,那么没有人需要使用武力。在无言的期待和寻求认 同的舞蹈中,我和妈妈是非常般配的一对。)”可知,作者主动提出学习乐器以获得母亲的认可。故选D。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段“For my mother, my musical industriousness wasn’t so much about achievement as identity. She was American by birth, and after marrying my university professor father and moving to London, she spent a decade working to be accepted into the impatient, fraught world of British intellectual society. (对我母亲来 说,我在音乐上的勤奋与其说是成就,不如说是身份。她出生在美国,在嫁给我的大学教授父亲并搬到伦 敦后,她花了10年的时间努力工作,以便被英国知识分子社会这个不耐烦、充满忧虑的世界所接受。)” 可知,作者的母亲认为作者在音乐上的勤奋是她融入当时英国知识界的一种方式。故选B。 【26题详解】细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“I’m disappointed when my sons won’t play their role in the script I have written for them, but deep down, I’m also a little thrilled. (当我的儿子们不能在我为他们写的剧本中扮演他们的角色时, 我很失望,但在内心深处,我也有点激动。)”可知,作者对于儿子们不愿练习乐器,一方面是失望,另一 方面是激动,作者的心里感受是复杂的。故选B。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第五段“And for my part, although I never truly believed that my mother’s love was conditional, I did have the suspicion that there was a performance- related bonus in there. (对我来说,虽然我从来 没有真正相信我母亲的爱是有条件的,但我确实怀疑其中有与表现相关的好处。)”可知,作者从自己的学 习乐器的经历讲述了对于父母无条件的爱的看法。C项:Can We Really Love Our Children Unconditionally? C。 C From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — can avoid the stop-and-go traffic. On a driveway with 15 vehicles per mile, one driver tapping their brakes can cause a persistent traffic jam. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up. Previous research had shown that ants can maintain their flow even at high densities (密度). So what’s their secret? In a recent study published in Transportation Research, researchers recorded ants on trails and used traffic- engineering models to analyze their movement. They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another and they don’t speed up to pass others. Human drivers at rush hour hardly tend to follow such rules. “We’re maximizing the interests of individuals. That is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno, who studies solid mechanics at the University of Trento. In his vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would avoid traffic jams by prioritizing constant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road. Like ants on a trail, which use scent (气味) to control behavior while interacting with one another, the autonomous vehicle network would help cars keep constant speeds while collecting and sharing information. “There is no leader,” but this organization emerges anyway, says Noa Pinter-Wollman, a behavioral scientist at the University of California. And in both ant and vehicle traffic, this type of distributed system can be very strong and changeable. Still, ants can do a lot of things that cars — even self-driving ones — can’t, the researcher points out. Ants can make trails as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. Plus, unlike cars, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another. Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam: by leavingroom between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise give rise to a traffic jam with no obvious cause. 28. Which is the contributing factor to ants’ stable traffic at high densities? A. Slow speed. B. Varied trails. C. Sufficient space. D. Strict rules. 29. Which of the following is in line with Nicola Pugno’s opinion? A. Prioritizing interests can lead to inefficient traffic flow. . B Human drivers usually break the traffic rules at rush hour. C. Human drivers will drive more slowly than autonomous vehicles. D. Autonomous vehicles may be programmed to improve traffic situation. 30. What can we learn about autonomous vehicle network? A. It can keep vehicle speed under control. B. It can provide drivers with changeable routes. C. It can form a solid and flexible traffic system. D. It can use scent to communicate with vehicles. 31. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. What ants will do when they face traffic jams. B. How ants may save you from future traffic jams. C. What we can benefit from autonomous vehicles. D. Why we should keep good distances while driving. C 29. D 30. C 31. 根据第二段“They found that the ants don’t jam because they travel in groups of 3 to 20 that move at nearly constant rates while keeping good distances between one another and they don’t speed up to pass others.(他们 发现蚂蚁不会堵塞,因为它们以3到20只为一组,以几乎恒定的速度移动,同时彼此之间保持适当的距离, 而且它们不会加速超过其他蚂蚁)”可知,蚂蚁在高密度下交通稳定的原因是它们之间保持了足够的空间, 而不是慢速、多样的路径或严格的规则。 根据第三段“In his vision of this future, autonomous vehicles would avoid traffic jams by prioritizingconstant speeds and headways or by not passing others on the road.(在他对未来的设想中,自动驾驶汽车将通过 优先考虑恒定速度和车距,或者不在路上超车来避免交通堵塞)”可知,Nicola Pugno认为自动驾驶汽车可 以通过编程来改善交通状况,即自动驾驶汽车可能被编程以改善交通状况。 根据第四段“Like ants on a trail, which use scent (气味) to control behavior while interacting with one another, the autonomous vehicle network would help cars keep constant speeds while collecting and sharing information. “There is no leader,” but this organization emerges anyway, says Noa Pinter-Wollman, a behavioral scientist at the University of California. And in both ant and vehicle traffic, this type of distributed system can be very strong and changeable.(就像小路上的蚂蚁,它们在相互交流时使用气味来控制行为,自动驾驶汽车网络 将帮助汽车保持恒定速度,同时收集和共享信息。加州大学的行为科学家Noa Pinter-Wollman说:“没有 领导者,”但这种组织无论如何都会出现。在蚂蚁和车辆交通中,这种分布式系统都非常强大且可变)”可 知,自动驾驶汽车网络将帮助汽车保持恒定速度,同时收集和共享信息,这种分布式系统都非常强大且可 变,可推理出自动驾驶汽车网络可以形成一个坚固而灵活的交通系统。故选C项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — can avoid the stop-and-go traffic. On a driveway with 15 vehicles per mile, one driver tapping their brakes can cause a persistent traffic jam. Researchers are now studying these insects’ cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up(从飞机上看,在高速公路上爬行的汽车看 起来像蚂蚁。但实际的蚂蚁——与汽车不同——可以避免走走停停的交通。在一条每英里有15辆车的车道 上,一个司机踩刹车就能造成持续的交通堵塞。研究人员正在研究这些昆虫的合作策略,以学习如何编程 自动驾驶汽车,使其不会堵塞)”和最后一段“Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants to avoid causing a traffic jam: by leaving room between their car and the one ahead of them, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise give rise to a traffic jam with no obvious cause(如今的司 机至少可以从蚂蚁身上学到一样东西来避免造成交通堵塞:通过在自己车和前车之间留出空间,司机可以 在密集的交通状况下吸收一波刹车潮,否则这股刹车潮会在没有明显原因的情况下引发交通堵塞)”可知, 文章围绕蚂蚁的交通策略展开,说明其对解决人类交通拥堵的启发,尤其是对自动驾驶汽车的借鉴意义, 因此,蚂蚁如何帮你摆脱未来交通拥堵可以概括本文的主题。故选B项。 D Some famous novels show that being the side character can give us access to deeper truths and a richer appreciation of the human condition than those too busy propelling the story forward. Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle“He possesses two out of the three qualities necessary for the ideal detective. He has the power of observation and that of deduction. He is only wanting in knowledge.” There is little doubt that Sherlock Holmes is the most famous detective in literature. Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories now exist in over 70 languages, and Holmes is the most portrayed literary character in film and television history. As a detective, Holmes often takes the lead in solving mysteries, but the story is told from the perspective of Dr. John H. Watson, Holmes’s loyal friend and companion. There are many advantages to this. First, Holmes is odd and tends to focus on minor details. Telling a short story from his perspective would make it anything but short. Dr. Watson translates Holmes’s oddity into something less tiring for the reader. On a literary level, having the story told by the companion helps keep the reader in suspense. If we had access to everything Holmes knew, the game would be over before it was happening. By seeing the Victorian world through Watson’s eyes, not only are we provided a picture that non-detectives can comprehend, but we get to enjoy Sherlock’s exciting adventures, free of spoiler (剧透). The Great Gatsby by E. Scot Fitzgerald “Yet high over the city, our line of yellow windows must have contributed their share of human secrecy to the casual watcher in the darkening streets, and I was him too, looking up and wondering. I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.” F. Scott Fitzgerald’s best-known work is a meditation on class in the supposedly egalitarian (平等主义) United States, the excesses of the 1920s, and how horrible it can be when the American Dream comes true. The story is told from the perspective of Nick Carraway, a young man who has moved to Long Island in hopes of becoming a stockbroker and cashing in on the 1920s boom. As the title suggests, the real hero of the story is his mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby. The difficulty of the story centers on Gatsby’s attempts to pursue Nick’s married cousin Daisy, his dreams of reliving the past, and his efforts to climb into the upper-class of American society. Nick, who is an unreliable narrator, is present for many of the main events in the story. However, as hinted at in the above quote, he considers himself an observer rather than a driver of those events. This allows us to get an outside view of the situation from somebody who admits he doesn’t entirely fit into the world he’s participating in while still being an intimate companion of those who do. The resulting commentary on the life of the American upper crust (症结) has been debated for a century. 32. If written from the perspective of Sherlock Holmes instead of Dr. John Watson, the book Sherlock Holmes would be ________.A. short and to the point B. incomprehensible and long C. full of spoiler and suspense D. interesting but too professional 33. What can be inferred from The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald? A. Nick Carraway is not just as observer but a driver of the story events. B. The real mysterious hero behind the title of the novel is Nick Garraway. C. Readers will know more about the American upper class from Jay Gatsby’s perspective. D. The unreliable narrator prevents readers grasping the harms of pursuing the American Dream. 34. Quotes from Sherlock Holmes and The Great Gatsby given below the title respectively in order to ________. A. stick to the traditional pattern of a famous novel B. indicate the side character’s role as the narrator C. remind readers of the theme and plot of the novels . D explain the main character’s neglect of deep truths 35. What message does the author want to convey through the two books mentioned? A. Side characters in novels are usually dismissed as unimportant. B. Classical novels must have quotes that have enduring power among readers. C. Stories told from the most important character’s perspective are still the mainstream. D. Individual, or historical eras can be deeply explored from a unique sideline perspective. 32. B 33. A 34. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job fell on Monday of each week. On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely. However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, Iquite believed he wouldn’t be home again. My parents told me “A miracle (奇迹) may happen as long as you don’t give up.” However, I quite doubted it. On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job! And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse. Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later, suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye. My eyes widened, and I was surprised to find it was just our cat. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ Encouraged, I rushed to the bus stop and decided not to give up the part-time job. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: My eyes widened, and I was surprised to find it was just our cat. Excited, I walked right up to him. While I carried him in my arms, he pushed his dirty face into mine. I wept with joy because I had found my cat. I turned around and took him to rush home. Seeing me carrying our cat, my mother was surprised. When I showed him to her, she said, “Just as I told you, a miracle may happen as long as you don’t give up.” This time, I nodded and smiled. Encouraged, I rushed to the bus stop and decided not to give up the part-time job. “Maybe it’ll indeed change me if I stick to it.” I told myself while heading towards the restaurant.
