Text 1
M: How old is your daughter? I haven’t seen her since her third birthday.
W: She had her seventh birthday last month. How time flies!
Text 2
W: I joined a reading club last month. Would you like to join me?
M: That sounds interesting. When do you read each week?
W: Well, we read together every Monday, Thursday and Sunday.
Text 3
W: I am having big problems getting along with my son these days. He never listens to me,
and always thinks he knows more than me.
M: Iris, take it easy! That’s normal for a teenage boy. Don’t worry too much. Time cures all
things.
Text 4
W: Have you been here before?
M: Yes. The last time I came here was when your father was a little boy. I remember he fell
into the swimming pool. I’ll never forget his shout of fear, "Dad, help me!"
Text 5
M: Doctor, I have had an earache since yesterday evening.
W: Let me check your ears. Well, it seems that nothing is wrong. What were you doing when
you didn’t feel well?
M: I was watching a movie online with earphones when I felt a sharp pain in my ears.
W: Well, you’d better not do that again.
Text 6
W: Sir, where are you going?
M: The train station, please! Shall I keep the bags behind?
W: Yes, you can.
M: Thank you. Wow, I like the music playing in your car. It’s nice.
W: Yeah, I always listen to music when driving. By the way, do you know the hot program
Happy Chinese?
M: Of course I do. The program is perfect for me. I started to learn Chinese last month
because of my work demands.
Text 7
M: Hi, Julia! Where have you been?
W: Hi, Kevin. I just went to the library to borrow some books. You know, I like reading to kill
time.
M: Oh, that’s cool. Besides reading, what else do you like? For example, do you like playing
basketball?
W: Basketball? Yeah, I like it best. What about you?
M: Table tennis is my favorite sport. I also like playing football with friends.
W: What about playing football together now? Maybe you can teach me. It will be fun.
M: Great. Let’s go!Text 8
W: Hi, Harry. How is business at your clothing store?
M: Not good. I think I’ve picked the wrong location.
W: Why do you think that?
M: When I chose this site, I thought I would have no competitor since there were only some
flower shops and grocery stores. But now I realize having no clothing store also means not
having enough regular customers.
W: How about lowering the price?
M: I don’t think it’ll work. And if I charge an even lower price, I’ll have no money to pay my
staff. I’m afraid I have to close it.
W: I’m sorry to hear that. What’s your future plan?
M: I won’t give up. I’ll try something else.
W: Why not talk with Linda about your problem? She is a successful businesswoman, and she
is nice.
M: Good idea!
Text 9
W: I have to move out of my apartment building at the end of November. Do you know any
other ones available nearby?
M: I can check with my landlord. Why are you moving?
W: The owner is going to do construction work on the building, so he requires everyone to
leave in two weeks. I’m really upset about it. Actually, I have lived there for three years.
M: That’s too bad. Well, you can stay in my apartment for a few days, if you want. I am
actually planning on moving out.
W: Why?
M: I’ve got a job in London. I’m going to stay there. But before that, I may go on a trip with
my family.
W: That sounds incredible.
M: I’m leaving in December. You could rent my apartment, or just stay there as a temporary
solution before finding a new one.
W: It’s very kind of you. By the way, how much is the rent of your apartment?
M: $1,000 a month. If you pay the rent ahead of schedule, you’ll get a 5% discount.
W: Really? That would be fantastic!
M: I will talk to my landlord about it. He is really nice. As long as you keep paying the rent on
time, I don’t think he will mind.
Text 10
W:Let’s look at five ways that will make homeschooling more fun both for you and your kids.
First, leave the classroom. The best part of homeschooling is that you can take it everywhere.
You can visit museums and take field trips, but you don’t have to spend class time with the
teachers. Second, go on a tour. Speaking of leaving the desk, you can also go on tours
online. Now, some websites offer such kind of service. Third, play more games. Naturally, the
best way to make something more fun is to play some games. In homeschooling, these
games should be educational ones, and they should not be too easy or beyond your
children’s level. Fourth, get some professional knowledge. Another way to think outside the
box is to have others teach your kids. This doesn’t mean you have to get someone to do
maths with them. Ask friends and family members to speak to your kids about subjects theyare good at and that may have nothing to do with school. Finally, don’t be so strict. Try not
to be strict with your kids when they get a bit bored. Only be strict when they are careless
about studying.
